    Some other notes here: Robert Kubica at the Hungaroring in 2006 was the last driver who had been disqualified via an underweight chassis, so this was quite a serious blunder.
    As to why an underweight car matters, not only does the weight difference mean that he would gain time over his opposition, it would've also meant the amount of wear on the tyres would be reduced, which might've contributed to Russell's one-stopper working out so well to finish 1st on the road.

    • @1zanglang
      @1zanglang Месяц назад +3

      Can you calculate, in SPA laps, how many laps did the 1.5 kilos lighter car gained, in terms of tires wear? In other words, do you really think that 1.5 kilos less made the difference between one stop and two stops, for tires change? In reality, it didn't made much difference, George did win by himself. That 1.5 kilos came from a wrong fuel quantity calculations, or from a slightly high consumption. As many said, some engineers made a mistake. But rules are rules, and he was disqualified.

    • @rvfharrier
      @rvfharrier Месяц назад +24

      @@1zanglang The fuel isn't a factor, the cars are supposed to be fully drained of fuel before being weighed. The car itself was 1.5kg too light, and yes it will have made a difference. 1kg is often cited to equate to roughly a tenth of a second per lap, so George will have been unfairly gaining time since the very start of the race and the lighter car will definitely have reduced his tyre wear and contributed to his ability to manage the tyres as long as he did. If his car was legal, his tyre wear would have been higher and he'd have lost about 4 seconds (more once you factor in his higher tyre wear) over the course of the race, meaning Lewis and probably Oscar as well would have most likely passed him.

    • @mascot4950
      @mascot4950 Месяц назад +3

      @@1zanglang The car weight limit is without fuel. I checked the regulation and the FIA document. A minimum of 1 liter must remain in the tank for testing, the document states this regulation was fulfilled as 2.8 liters were drained. The car was then weighed again, fuel fully drained. That's the weight that matters, and it means the car was underweight for the whole race as it had lost no parts due to damage.
      As for how much of a difference it would have made, I don't think anyone can claim to genuinely know. Personally, I'm in the "seems really unlikely to have mattered" camp. It would have made miniscule difference to lap time and tire wear. The margins were not that thin from what I remember. The tires were still holding on fine, plenty of traction and the car did not look slippery, so it seems unlikely that carrying that extra weight would have pushed them off the cliff. But there's no getting away from the fact it would have had _some_ effect, and rules are rules.

    It seems like people don’t realise how being 1.5 KG less than everybody significantly affects the overall performance of the car. Seeing comments here and there saying that the FIA makes a big deal out of this and it is unfair.. Just to clarify, this amount of weight removed makes the car about 0,15 to 0,20 seconds quicker than everyone else’s pace per lap. That translates roughly being 6-7 seconds faster due to less weight in 44 laps. If you add those seconds on Russell’s race, he would be in 4th or 5th place at the end, which would make a lot more sense with that bold strategy move. Tsunoda and Magnussen also followed a one stop strategy but their outcome was nowhere near as successful as Russell’s race. So yeah the DNF is absolutely justified. F1 has very small margins, and not being disqualified would be borderline unfair for the rest of the grid.

    Finding it odd that so many are proclaiming Russell's race as some kind of 'mega drive' - he was absolutely nowhere for 2/3's of it and had nothing to lose by gambling on a 1 stop and throwing a double 6. And every driver on the grid has remarked that the tyres didn't degrade anywhere near what everyone expected them to which makes a mockery of suddenly anointing him as the 'tyre whisperer'. Not to mention he was driving a car a couple of kg's underweight which is a huge advantage around a circuit like Spa where you're on full throttle for 70% of the lap. It turned out track position was key and he was handed it in strategy to the detriment of his team mate who had earned it on merit.

    I mean, again, by the time Lewis was called in for a second stop, they knew the one stop would work, and could have had Lewis stay out too. My guy even said the tires were fine literally one lap before he was called into the pits to respond to LeClerc, who hasn't been a real threat since Monaco, so yeah, it feels like Mercedes got in his way to give George a shot.
    You've also got so many people working on these cars, so it's hard to see how they didn't know it'd be underweight. This all just kinda reeks of dirty business at Mercedes.

      No, merc did not believe that 1stop was better.. even w 10laps remaining, they asked george if he is sure about the 1 stop,, and george did this strategy only because he had nothing to lose, he was anyways expecting to finish around p5..
      this was not some
      Stroke of genius that everyone is thinking.. basically the track fooled everyone and those who put bet on clean air rather than undercutting their opponents, were the beneficiaries..

    One of the things this GP showed us is that having a large group of cars close in racepace doesn't always mean exciting racing. The like the lack of overspeed left all drivers stuck in position, I even doubt if Piastri would have been able to pass Lewis if he'd had two more laps.

    Here's my question, because something similar came up last year with disqualification (McLaren fan here, I'll take the extra points this weekend) - do they inspect every car after every race to the same specs? You shouldn't only weigh the podiums because each point matters, and if an inspection is going to result in a disqualification they need to inspect every car in the same way after every race so it's consistent.

    Suspicious on lap 44 when Hamilton, who is on tires 16 laps newer than Russell, asks on the radio: "How fast should I be? Can I attack Russell or not?" And the team responds: "Come closer, just come closer"... Phew, they can't find a way to put Russell ahead of Hamilton. Lewis visibly upset. He was clearly able to overtake Russell but never attacked him, he just stayed behind in the DRS zone, losing time and Piastri almost took the position away from him.
