Gene Pitnney has so much emotion. And that powerful ending just rips my heart out. Your comments show that you feel his music as much as I do. Good description. Was very popular.
This was always my favorite Gene Pitney song. We would sing along and try to hold that last note with him. Another good song is Half Heaven Half Heartache.
I was fortunate to see Gene Pitney in Perth Western Australia a few years before he died. His voice sounded just like it did in the 1960s, and he could still hold that 10 second note at the end of this song with no effort at all. One of the most memorable shows I have seen.
@@mrb4749 MINE TOO... I LOVE GENE PITNEY, no one else has that voice (just like NO ONE sings like Roy Orbison). When you hear his voice you KNOW it is Gene Pitney.
Thanks for listening to Gene Pitney. This is my favorite song of his though he had many hits. Listen to more of his, 24 hours to Tulsa, Town Without Pity, Liberty Valence.
OMG, the best of music was the late 50's and early 60's! Thank you for playing Gene's songs 50 years plus later! I will tell you that Gene sang this song in 1969 at the Sea World and Geogia Lake Park, in Ohio!
Gene. was one of the most emotional singers of his day. He not only wrote songs for himself but also for many other singers but his voice was always the best for the songs. RIP, Gene. You are missed.
Loved your reaction to this wonderful song ! .. Gene Pitney had a brilliant voice and many memorable hits, and this would be just about my favourite .. Other suggestions for more Gene reactions would include "It Hurts To Be In Love", "Yesterdays Hero" and "Half Heaven Half Heartache", but I could go on .. and on .. and on .. Thanks, Wayne
My father raised my brothers and I on this music. As a child, I loved the music and when I reached adulthood I understood the nuance and lyrical passion conveyed. It's refreshing to see a young mind touched by its melancholy and know exactly what his performance and lyrical content is conveying. Well done young lady!!!
I know Gene Pitney through my mother who had records of him. My three favorite songs by him are 'Town Without Pity', 24 Hours From Tulsa and 'It Hurts To Be In Love', oops 'I forgot one big hit from him: 'Something's Gotten Hold Of My Heart'! Gene Pitney was only 65 when he died, in 2006, too young of course.
I am like you Angela, I TOO like singers that have a unique voice and don't sound like anyone else. Gene Pitney is one of my favorites from the early '60s when I was teenager
Great singer unfortunately forgotten tho. My favorites Only Love can Break a Heart and Half Heaven Half Heartache. Thanks for shining light on his great music.
Do listen to "Something's gotten hold of my heart", there is also a great version from 1989 with Soft Cell's Marc Almond, he intended it as an hommage to Gene.
Have always enjoyed Pitney's work. But for my money, his best was "Every Breath I Take", recorded in 1961. It was one of Phil Spector's very first "Wall of Sound" productions, and featured one of the best studio background vocal groups ever -- the Halos -- behind Pitney. Definitely worth a listen.
There are of course the great rock voice legends of Zeppelin's Robert Plant, The Who's Roger Daltry, Deep Purples Ian Gillan and of course the late great Roy Orbison all of whom have mastered that special ability to grab your soul and shake it to your very core when it matters. When those vocalists sing, you wait in anticipation knowing what is coming... Genes voice is also one of those. The sense of unrestrained power coming out of those lungs at the end is unmatched to this day..Others get close, very close, but Gene just tips it...
One of his good songs... Town Without Pity another great song from him...It's another song that could've made you movie theme list as it from a fantastic movie by the same name ....
I. England in rhe 70s there was a tv program called top of the pops ,all the artists were on singing there hits but you had to sing it live ,there was no miming , I thought can gene hit that last note live ,yes he could ,all the best .
Hey, DayOne, I hope you will play a number of these songs by The Carpenters: Ticket to Ride; Help; And When He Smiles; Masquerade; A Song For You; A Rainbow Connection; Breaking Up is Hard to do; I can't Smile Without You; I just Keep Falling In Love Again; Make Believe It's Your First Time; For All We Know; Only Yesterday; I'll Never Fall In Love Again; A Place to Hideaway; Mr. Postman; All You Get from Love is a Love Song; I Need Some Time; Sing a Song; All of My Life; Bless the Beasts and Children; Calling Your Name Again; Goodbye to Love; I Believe You; I Have You; I Need to Be in Love; Jambalaya (On the Bayou); Sweet, Sweet Smile; There's a Kind of Hush; Those Good Old Dreams; Where Do I Go from Here; You. These are all good songs; plus, there are more :)
Angela, if you like Gene Pitney and since you like songs that tell stories, I recommend "The Man Who Shot Liberty Valance." It's from a western movie by the same name. It starred John Wayne and Lee Marvin (who played Valance, a cruel and ruthless murderer). The song, which tells the story of the movie, emphasizes the unique qualities of Pitney's voice which you mentioned.
Hello dear Angela, your channel is amazing. Gene Pitney was a great singer. Well, I have a suggestion with a Cliff Richard theme: "The Next Time (1962)". I would like to hear your opinion.
I hope you won't be offended by this grandfather (I'm 78) telling you that you are maybe the prettiest lady on RUclips...any man who would break up with you has to be terminally stupid...Gene Pitney was very big in the 1960s, and yes, his voice is indeed unique. Sadly, you don't hear much of him today even on oldies radio for some reason...thank you for the review, and I like the fact that you appreciate him as much as I do.
My favorite Pitney song is "The Man Who Shot Liberty Valance" which was the theme for a movie of the same name (good movie -- definitely a love story) among other things. Not so sure it would appeal to you but if you're interested, here's the link: ruclips.net/video/PhsZkPlMQk8/видео.html
As others have mentioned, you should do yourself a favour and check out the excellent cover of this song by Cyndi Lauper when she was with her band Blue Angel ( which coincidentally is also the name of one of Gen Pitney's hits ) .. It needs a great voice to do this demanding song justice, and Cyndi has exactly that .. a wonderful voice !
Gene Pitnney has so much emotion. And that powerful ending just rips my heart out.
Your comments show that you feel his music as much as I do. Good description. Was very popular.
Gene Pitney was a musical genius, singer, song writer, and producer. Please get at least one album.
How you let this song reach your raw emotion is beautiful.
This song has given me chills right from the 60s. And that huge operatic final crescendo. Wonderful.
My Grandfather loves Gene Pitney and Gary Puckett and got us into their music. Love both artists, nothing like them anymore.
This was always my favorite Gene Pitney song. We would sing along and try to hold that last note with him. Another good song is Half Heaven Half Heartache.
Great singer. Many hits that can hit you on the heart
Gene is one of my favorite singers. Surprisingly he was more popular in Europe than the US and passed away there while touring.

Gene Pitney is a legend.
Gene had many hits in the 1960s. “Town Without Pity” and “Only Love Can Break a Heart” are two favorites.
Definitely two of my favorite songs ever!! Great suggestion

It's so nice to see someone young and beautiful reacting to this. Unappreciated and easily forgotten, but subtly beautiful

Everyone is moved to tears when they hear this song. It has done it to me for 60 years.
Gene Pitney did such beautiful ballads. But my favorite is "If I Didn't Have A Dime"
Great reaction! I agree with those requesting Town Without Pity by him.

It does break a tear doesn’t it .
Gene Pitney was great. If you really liked this song a very good cover of it was done by Bill Medley of Righteous Brothers. I think you would like
Take. Your. Time❤😊

Just a note...that harmony you hear is Gene singing both parts...he made it famous ............................

Cyndi Lauper was another one with a quirky voice that did a very respectful cover of this song.
Town Without Pity, 24 Hours from Tulsa, The Man Who Shot Liberty Valance ...
A MUST DO.....Town Without Pity!
people dont understand gene was the king of the hill back then
Hi DayOne please do a reaction of Take Me Tonight by Gene Pitney
try "Somethings got a hold of my heart"
Guy can sing, not like today's crap.
Think of he would have worked with Roy Orbison together.
It hurts to be in love
