A nice choice for an upscale off roader. As an owner of a built GX460, I am a bit dismayed that the front fascia isn't more modular and accommodating of a winch bumper, as mentioned in the video. I had to deal with this on the 460, and it is a PITA, making for a loooong day to install a bumper. I am also a bit dismayed that the new powertrain is only 2 mpg better than the old one, albeit with more power. I'll stick with my NA V8 for that tradeoff.
I'm looking at that front bumper imagining all the plastic I'm going to have to cut to put a winch on it. It's a shame they didn't do something more modular like on the Land Cruiser.
@@jimmy-buffett I was intimidated by the idea of cutting the fascia on my 460. The reality was, it was not really difficult at all, but very fiddly and time consuming to get right without going too far too soon.
@@stevecarlson2346 it's all about the template that the bumper folks give you. I have an Expedition One bumper on my 4Runner and had to cut a bit of plastic. It looks like Lexus made the bottom center insert on the bumper the spot where they expect you to put a winch, which means no full winch bumper. The parking sensors seem too low to put a bumper over them, looks like they would need to be relocated.
Can you please ask the engineer why the overtrail has this plastic on the transmission hump in front of the rear seat and the premium has the transmission hump covered in what looks to be the same material as the floor which is how it should be for the overtrail? That plastic on the transmission hump in the overtrail is going to get scuffed/damaged in no time.
What a beautiful rig! It's crazy that the average price for a vehicle is around 50k . . . . . . . . . but that makes this lovely, very capable Lexus almost look like a bargain at less than 80k.
So I just sat in the Overtrail (err whatever Over label they attach) GX at Barrett-Jackson in Scottsdale. Meh. Felt like a RAV4 inside. My '97 LX450 is a damn bit nicer feeling. Granted, you're not expecting a real fancy interior for this use case, but it just felt overly plastic-y inside. Missed having real analog cluster too. Exterior proportions were nice. The new Prado 250 was over in the Toyota booth. Front end with the round lights looks nice in person. No Ineos at the show which would have been nice to compare to.
I’ll just stick with my 200 Series. However, this is a nice SUV. I would choose it over a Defender for sure. I just wish they would bring the 300 over here. I swear sometimes I think Toyota just hates money.
I've seen videos of these things offroad - was that taken at this event? I've spec'd out a basic Overtrail edition for just over $70k and am thinking of sending the order to the dealer.... Not quite ready to have a car payment again though. Grr. Also not thrilled about the hatch rear. The side swinging door is amazing for opening it in the garage and not having to expose myself to the northeast weather .
The "From The Ground Up" videos that Lexus has been putting out about this truck were shot in Colorado on Imogene Pass last fall. This GX drive event was this week and the driving impressions are embargoed until February 1st. So the videos you're seeing most likely weren't at this event.
"delicate"? Frankly when people can't afford something they tend to be afraid of it. LC200 cost 30k more than a GX460 and is meant to go straight offroad. The son is correct here... low plastic on the bumper yes, "delicate"? as delicate as a tank can be 😃
3:39 how can it be 4 inches longer than the upcoming Land Cruiser? Aren’t they basically the same vehicle? I know the panels aren’t exactly the same but how do you get 4 inches difference?
The bodies are different enough to add 2" to each end. A little extra plastic or sheet metal bent differently would do it. Confusing as other reviewers said it's only 3".
GX is 197.04 and LC is 193.07. LC is 3.97 shorter. Specs from Lexus/Toyota newsroom. I saw both in person and I believe it's all from the front end design.
Love the father & son duo. Great job, fellas. Thank you for all the great content. Roman, please stop bashing conservatives all the time. Most of your channel's fans are truck loving patriots.
I think I like the Land Cruiser more, but I like the V6 in the GX550. This pricing for the GX is in the heart of the market and it goes without saying this thing is going to sell faster than they can make them. The question still remains though, where will the next 4Runner fit in with the LC and GX?
No 3rd row option on the OverTrail, and no crawl control on other models was a deal breaker for my family. We loved our 2010 GX460 and I still daily a 2004 GX470. Will just have to buy a used 200 Series or an LX570 instead. Major Bummer. They should at least make it an option.
@@LexusGX460-OFF-ROAD I thought it has crawl control with turn assist, no? And yeah it doesn’t have a locker though it does have a rear limited slip with the electronic wizardry that goes along with it. I’m sure it’s pretty darn capable for a family adventure. There’s always the Land Cruiser too which has the third row if the emblems on the front and back aren’t too much of a deal breaker.
@@ALMX5DP The New Land Cruiser DOES NOT have a 3rd row either on any trim levels. 2 row only. The LX600 has Crawl Control and Turn Assist as well as Multi-terrain Select but Im not spending the extra $20k-$55k on that. We are also buying an MDC XT17 Family off grid travel trailer at the same time so that would be pushing it with the overall budget. If I can equip a used 2014+ LX570 with a Harrop 2650 that makes around 400whp, an LRA 40 gallon aux tank, and toss on portals for $80k Ill have a very capable vehicle for around the same price of the Overtrail+ and have plenty of room for the family.
I think not that not having a 3rd on the Overtrain is a miss because as far I can tell, you can have the floor fold flat. Whereas in the Premium and Premium+ you can, at least from the videos I have seen. Unless you really want ALL the off-road goodies, it seems the Premium/Premium+ trims may be better. An additional point, mostly a styling issue, it seems to me the Overtrail have a lot of gloss black on the exterior, which would not handle scuffs and scratches well.
The only thing about that rear gate opening upward like that is that if you lift it, you might hit the top of your garage as I know very well with my Jeep Cherokee Trailhawk .
I have a strong preference for Toyota and Lexus vehicles, but it's essential not to overlook the fact that Land Rover's Terrain Response System boasts an exceptional off-road program, even without a differential lock. Despite Land Rover being perceived as less durable compared to others, its off-road capabilities are truly impressive.
Why does the engine make less power in this thing than it does in the tundra? Especially since Lexus probably states premium fuel only, whereas the tundra can use 87?
Detuned from the tundra / LX600 likely for reliability and to not step on their toes in the lineup If this got the same tune and power as the LX600 while also having eKDSS and a rear locker (that the LX600 doesn't get) while having 90% of the interior...who would want to get the LX lol
I assume he’s referring more to the American market where LX’s here are used for mall crawling, interstate highway travel, and soccer practice. GX’s are treated the same here, too. Hopefully more Americans will take the 550 off the beaten path more frequently.
Consider including the payload value for the vehicle you are showing. The tow rating is less important than the payload which is usually the first to be violated.
Can we get a video demonstrating how easy it is to hot swap the lower chin piece? It would be nice to have a beat up heavy duty chin to take on the trails, then swap it with a pristine chin for daily commuting to the office.
Roman, you forgot to mention the towing......you should have just said it when you first brought it up. Also, visually, the tires appear to stick out much farther than those humps in the hood. I don't think I would use that to tell where my tires are.
Even though this is trail ready, and I know this is not a wild guess, these will stay on pavement for the most part. Second or third owner will take them out off road
@@kylewilliams5219no I think he's right. Look at the current GX/Prado. Most 1st owners use em as a daily. Then the 2nd Or 3rd owners are the ones who build em up and hit the trails
Same thing with the new Bronco's. They sell thousands and hardly see any of them on the trails. Since the majority of the owners of the GX are women, who think the outdoors is walking in the park, I doubt many will see anything more challenging than a gravel parking lot.
I'm going to have an interesting choice between the GX 550, land cruiser, and the next gen 4Runner. I'll probably wait a few years and pickup a used lease return, avoid that depreciation hit.

Question about the off-road trim vs luxury - does anyone know if the NVH and sound dampening would be the same between the two versions? I have not seen any reviewer comment on that.
I contacted my local dealer, they said they'd let me know their allotment when they know, that was a month ago. I mentioned I'm not interested if they put a $10k markup on em, it's been crickets since. Think they like folks who contact them saying I'm willing to pay over MSRP. I hope they don't mark em up too bad.
Is there a full sized spare under the floor? I would have thought that for a serious off-roader, that's going to be essential, and you surely can't mount one on that tailgate.
I blame RUclips. Influencers always talk about how "off-road" capable a GX is. They are missing the reason people buy them. Sure a twenty year old used Lexus GX might be taken off-road. Show me one person, that knows anything about going off-road, that would spend around $70k + on a GX just to beat it up. You can get just about anywhere on a paved road in America. If you require an off-road capable vehicle for the area you live in, your probable just going to get a pickup truck. Americans aren't doing the school run through fields like people in England or traveling on undeveloped roads in sub-sarhan Africa. How did it take a pothole? How comfy is the ride on I-95? These are the real questions. You should make a poll asking people if they would buy this truck and take it off a paved surface.
"Show me one person, that knows anything about going off-road, that would spend around $70k + on a GX just to beat it up." /raises hand I help run a large offroading club here in Denver, I plan on buying one of these and offroading it. Maybe in a few years when the aftermarket has figured out how to put a winch on it.
What do you people think happens off road? Do you believe people are running into rocks and just smashing up bumpers and quarter panels? It is possible to wheel without wrecking the shit out of a truck. Plenty of people do it. If you've ever been off road you'd realize there are plenty of tracks that are just tracks that still require 4wd and 4lo to crawl through so you aren't damaging the crap out of a trail. That puts no effort on any vehicle and no damage. Not every owner puts their truck into a rock. No one is dropping their truck in a mud pit either. There's plenty of offroading in between that is still mellow and yet gets you out into the country.
@@d1sturb3d119 exactly. I’ve been plenty of places in Moab, backcountry Utah, Mexico, Colorado, and I believe with oversized tires (32-35” and up) and skill you can actually get through most things without damaging your vehicle

That’s a really good review. I liked how you compared it to the new LC and the 4Runner specs.
When will the new 4 runner be announced?
HAHAHAHA that intro!!!
Gosh, that thing is beautiful!!!!! F! I want one so bad!
What kind of watch are you wearing ??
Love it, sign me up, I'll take one...WAIT, HOW MUCH...never mind
🤣 + 1, imagine putting a some battle scars on it 🤑
What a beautiful rig! It's crazy that the average price for a vehicle is around 50k . . . . . . . . . but that makes this lovely, very capable Lexus almost look like a bargain at less than 80k.
Tommy great job great review 👍👍dad must be proud, great job too roman😊
Great review. When the hybrid comes do you think it’ll be the 2.4L hybrid or the V6 hybrid from the Tundra?
How much can this tow? Does it change with the different trim levels?
Up to 9k based on trim level. Way more than anyone should need with a vehicle this size.
@@Dusdaddy ya that's pretty amazing. Leaves my Highlander in the dust with 5k.
A Land Cruiser would be a dream for me ❤
Is the extra 4" of length compared to the incoming lc250 in the front end ahead of the tires?
Exactly. Identical inside size.
"delicate"? Frankly when people can't afford something they tend to be afraid of it. LC200 cost 30k more than a GX460 and is meant to go straight offroad. The son is correct here... low plastic on the bumper yes, "delicate"? as delicate as a tank can be 😃
Any "offroad" model that incorporates a hybrid system is ABSOLUTLY a no-go for me! I really liked the new Sequoia as well.😔
Very exciting Lexus off-road
3:39 how can it be 4 inches longer than the upcoming Land Cruiser? Aren’t they basically the same vehicle? I know the panels aren’t exactly the same but how do you get 4 inches difference?
All the plastic BS hanging off the front and back of it
The bodies are different enough to add 2" to each end. A little extra plastic or sheet metal bent differently would do it. Confusing as other reviewers said it's only 3".
GX is 197.04 and LC is 193.07. LC is 3.97 shorter. Specs from Lexus/Toyota newsroom. I saw both in person and I believe it's all from the front end design.
same wheelbase but the actual body is longer
Wow that is a good looking SUV. Out of reach price wise but gorgeous.
Agreed. Really like the look
I think the LandCruiser version looks better though
Love the father & son duo. Great job, fellas. Thank you for all the great content. Roman, please stop bashing conservatives all the time. Most of your channel's fans are truck loving patriots.
I think I like the Land Cruiser more, but I like the V6 in the GX550. This pricing for the GX is in the heart of the market and it goes without saying this thing is going to sell faster than they can make them. The question still remains though, where will the next 4Runner fit in with the LC and GX?
I wish they were putting the 3.4L V6 in the Tacoma and LC. Even if it was detuned. Im not super interesting in the hybrid
What’s the thing on the top of the steering wheel?
Probably watches your eyes and beeps if you look away too long.
I don’t know if I would want to go beat up this beauty on the trails honestly
Does it require premium fuel?
Wait a minute. Are those "CORNERING LAMPS"?
I am SUPER excited to see LEXUS/TOYOTA kept them.
I wish they would put them on more vehicles.
Why not get an LX600?
yes, deal breaker fornus too.. OT+ needs 3rd row.. people got kids 😅
@@ALMX5DPLX600 has no ekdss, locker, turn assist etc
How much can it tow?
Now does it park itself like the tx
All Toyota/Lexus SUV trucks are best in segment so you cant go wrong with any of them starting at 45k with the 4Runner not bad
Is the tailgate height adjustable?
most toyta gates are adjustable... the Sienna one is
Binnacle is a built-in housing for a ship’s compass.
Did I hear correctly that this vehicle is 4 inches longer than it’s new Land Cruiser counterpart?? 3:35
Luxury off-road is a bit weird of a use-case but looks cool.
My local (Westchester NY) Lexus dealership is already on deep back order on the 550. More than 100 People have already reserved
Nice truck.
Tommy- Gx550 overtrail + or Sequoia TRD Pro both costs almost same? Why?
I think not that not having a 3rd on the Overtrain is a miss because as far I can tell, you can have the floor fold flat. Whereas in the Premium and Premium+ you can, at least from the videos I have seen. Unless you really want ALL the off-road goodies, it seems the Premium/Premium+ trims may be better. An additional point, mostly a styling issue, it seems to me the Overtrail have a lot of gloss black on the exterior, which would not handle scuffs and scratches well.
Love it!
The only thing about that rear gate opening upward like that is that if you lift it, you might hit the top of your garage as I know very well with my Jeep Cherokee Trailhawk .
You can adjust where the tailgate stops.
Yeah, even the wife's 2015 Nissan Rogue hatch is adjustable. She hasn't hit anything in our garage since she got it.
Ain’t no one taking their brand new Lexus luxury off road 😂😂😂😂
Why does the engine make less power in this thing than it does in the tundra? Especially since Lexus probably states premium fuel only, whereas the tundra can use 87?
Detuned from the tundra / LX600 likely for reliability and to not step on their toes in the lineup
If this got the same tune and power as the LX600 while also having eKDSS and a rear locker (that the LX600 doesn't get) while having 90% of the interior...who would want to get the LX lol
Finally? Lexus has been smashing it with their Land Cruiser.
I assume he’s referring more to the American market where LX’s here are used for mall crawling, interstate highway travel, and soccer practice. GX’s are treated the same here, too. Hopefully more Americans will take the 550 off the beaten path more frequently.
@@misterllemosLX and GX are plentiful on the trails in America ❤
@@misterllemos I see more Lexus SUV’s off road than F150’s. Do you wheel?
Consider including the payload value for the vehicle you are showing. The tow rating is less important than the payload which is usually the first to be violated.
Lame dad comment warning. Boy its so heartwarming to see you guys doing a review together.
Which one do you think will be better for overland
good one
Can we get a video demonstrating how easy it is to hot swap the lower chin piece? It would be nice to have a beat up heavy duty chin to take on the trails, then swap it with a pristine chin for daily commuting to the office.
Roman, you forgot to mention the towing......you should have just said it when you first brought it up. Also, visually, the tires appear to stick out much farther than those humps in the hood. I don't think I would use that to tell where my tires are.
8,000lbs towing. Was waiting for that too but had to go off and look it up.
(per Car and Driver)
Per the TFL comparison video yesterday, Lexus just updated the towing to 9063lbs except the Luxury +.
@@GeronimoJenkins That's funny, Pickup Truck Plus SUV said 9000. Maybe not the trail model.
Even though this is trail ready, and I know this is not a wild guess, these will stay on pavement for the most part. Second or third owner will take them out off road
And the award for the most pointless comment goes to…
@@kylewilliams5219no I think he's right.
Can’t wait to take it to my cabin in Telluride or my beach house in Malibu.Rock climbing to sand mode.
This statement pretty much applies to 90% of any vehicle with 4wd. Jeeps, Broncos, trucks, etc.
I can wait to see one of these in my local mall parking lot! Do you think this will make the little g wagon boys jealous?
we take our GX to the mall.
Please show us the Base one
I'm going to have an interesting choice between the GX 550, land cruiser, and the next gen 4Runner. I'll probably wait a few years and pickup a used lease return, avoid that depreciation hit.
Def excited for that next gen 4runner
+1 for off-lease, I find a lot of off-lease GX460's for people and they drop really fast after 3 years and ~40K miles.
This. I have a built 2012 460 that I bought off-lease, was among the first handful of people to build a 460. Definitely looking forward to picking up one of these as the second owner.
@@jimmy-buffett they depreciate an identical amount over the following 3 years and 40-50k miles after that, except you're on the hook for brakes/tires/suspension etc at that point... 6 one, half dozen the other (even arguably cheaper the first 3 years given where you will be at with wear and tear+service by 40k+ miles)
@@jimmy-buffett actually I checked, and the GX depreciates ~14% in the first 3 years, then it's down to an ADDITIONAL 26% depreciation between years 4-6. You're at 54% the original value at year 6 vs 86% original value at year 3.
looking forward to seeing them with off road bumpers
I like this thing
If I had the cheddar:
1. Lexus GX 550
2.LC200
3. 4Runner TRD PRO
Would be my list to shop for to upgrade from my current 5th gen T4R.
Would have loved to be able to drive before purchasing my Land Rover last year. Love my LR, but this is maybe the only thing I would trade for in the future.
Question about the off-road trim vs luxury - does anyone know if the NVH and sound dampening would be the same between the two versions? I have not seen any reviewer comment on that.
The base GX is fine. (If you can afford that) Vast majority of people don't need lockers.
My brother works for a Lexus dealer and told me they are expecting to sell alot of these GX's. I would agree.
@@Cocky.Rooster Let's hope the Overtrail isn't limited like the TRD Pro's are. I just saw a 12k markup on a 4 runner TRD Pro.
I am planning on roughing up an Overtrail+ with a Campteq pop up on top off road
"Show me one person, that knows anything about going off-road, that would spend around $70k + on a GX just to beat it up."

I help run a large offroading club here in Denver, I plan on buying one of these and offroading it.
@@d1sturb3d119 if you only knew what I've done off-road. LOLOL
This is the best trim! It is a man’s truck and honestly the price of trucks if I have to spend my money on anything it will be this cause it will hold its value
At first I was thinking the 1958 Land Cruiser at 55k was the way to go, but after pricing one of these out without a sunroof at 69k on the Lexus site, this might be worth the extra coin. I'm super curious about that hybrid powertrain though, so the jury is still out.
Are vehicle-specific tires ever a good idea?

Looks so much better than the Land Cruiser.
I'd buy one, especially after a review like this....
It’s the Land Cruiser Prado with a Lexus badge. Like how the lx is a Land Cruiser 300 with a Lexus badge
