New GX looks better for sure but it's really hard for me to justify the massive price difference for my uses. The GX460 can be found for $20-30k cheaper right now and it's still damn good.
i agree but the gx just changed all of the things i hated about my current gx power lift gate more thirs row space so dated inftainent and design so i have to change my current one

Although the new Gx looks gorgeous in photos, up close next to the last generation it actually looks very disappointing. The refinement and class has left Lexus with this newer generation
Hopefully the new TT V6 proves reliable. Overall I don't see much reason to upgrade from my 460. Even the space behind the 3rd is still poor. I'm sure if doing alot of towing the extra tq will come in handy, as it is I barely go past 2k RPM in most daily driving. I do like seeing they kept the ceiling vents, thats been a great feature in the GX.
Agreed, I have 33's on my 460. Lots of off roading. A-trac and crawl control have gotten me through everything from mud rock and sand. Lockers are overrated.
@@noeflores5794Lockers are not overrated. Which is why Toyota includes them on their best off-road models. You're just not doing obstacles that need them. Which is fine, the GX is a great light off-roader. But don't spin BS about lockers.
I really hate that they are leaving the spindle grill behind. I think its awesome, especially on the sports cars. Hopefully, they'll keep them on those
Unpopular opinion - I sat in the new Overtrail trim at the DC Auto Show and was not impressed. Too much hard plastic for a premium product. I’d rather save some money and scoop up a 2024 4Runner Limited before EOY. Felt just as nice, if not nicer, than the GX550 Overtrail.
Theres some quirks that arent up to the gx460 standard. No more physical climate controls like the 460, rear seats dont fold down flat, rear is boxy and ugly as hell, center console cool box option was an afterthought, rear seats dont have the climate controls either. Digital cluster scale is meh.
Gx460 has it's problems. I should know since I own one. Coolant leaks are common like the valley plate. Costs thousands to fix. Not to mention the weak plastic radiator tends to crack every 60k miles. The transmission is fragile when you hit higher mileage. Solenoids commonly fail and people end up chasing the problem down a rabbit hole and end up replacing the whole transmission. The cheap plastics in the interior eventually creak and the adhesives used to hold them together fall apart causing more creaking. Also common is the KDSS lean that drives owners nuts.
Out going model still my fav , love the curves and sharp design . Interior really feel luxurious With new model out there I am expecting old one to drop prices , even though I already have 2006-2007 model , I might upgrade to 2020-2022 model
Before you do, watch the GX 550 video from the Car Nut Guy, he details all the issues with the GX550. If my present GX 460 gets stolen or titled I would not buy the new 550, instead I would buy the LX!
As I own the 2023 GX equipped exactly as reviewed in this video, I can say that I don't see that many upgrades in the 2024 GX to justify a 11K increase in price. The 2023 shown here is a luxury trim with the offroad package and it does have a 360 camera as well, along with Captains Chairs, leather, etc. Sure, on the 2024 the towing capacity is higher and you get more power, and you have a heads up display option and a rear locker, but the overall packaging of the 2023 is better, in my opinion - the second row folds flat in the 2023, where in the 2024 they have the "tumble forward" design which eats up usable space, the rear wiper folds away when not in use in the 2023 while it stays on the rear glass on the 2024, the swing out rear door is exactly the same as other serious offroaders like the Wrangler, Bronco, Defender, so not sure why the 2024 flip up design is more "off road worthy", the 2023 is narrower for better maneuverability on narrow offroad trails (like the current 4Runner), embedding climate controls in the digital display, including seat heat and vent controls, is harder to use off road. And, finally, we don't even get much better, if not exactly the same, fuel economy than the old, extremely reliable V8 in the 2023 - this, with a new 10 speed transmission. I know you mentioned that a hybrid is coming, but how much more money will that cost? Seems like Toyota did a reskin, added a few features, and then priced it much higher - that's it.
Just more trims now so hard to compare. The 460's luxury is basically the 550s premium+ / base luxury with the top trim, luxury+, not having an equivalent. one is also getting more vehicle (bigger vehicle) and much more power (+50hp and 150lb-ft of torque) on top of the 1-2 mpg gains. that's quite substantial
@@chibbyylol I guess everyone has their own definition of "substantial". Also, the 2023 luxury does have additional options which are on the vehicle here - the offroad package and the sport design package - so I think that this 2023 does match up with the luxury+, for 10k less.
My only issue is losing the v8 for that v6 with less gas mileage. My current 460 is a amazing truck and i was hoping in exchange the gas milage would improve drastically.
This is the very first lexus ive ever found visually appealing and the specs match the sauce. Well done Toyota. Id strongly consider a plug in hybrid version
I like the old one's interior, but I like the new one's Exterior, lol. The front end has always been polarizing to me, looks like a vacuum cleaner on the previous gen, new gen looks much better.
strangely it's only a few grand more than the 460 (albeit this is MSRP and who knows how much dealerships are going to mark up). folks were expecting it to be quite a bit more expensive
Beauty is in the eye of the beholder, and this beholder believes the older has smoother more aerodynamic lines than the newer Transformer look. And, the Overtrail Plus is the only trim option I would consider and that trim would be close to 82k before dealer adjustment/markup, accessories, and then fees plus taxes. can you say 90k after DMV fees and insurance, and that is with no dealer adjustment. Of course I will pay no dealer adjustment but would wait another two years until they realize not everyone will acquiesce to that. New interior is more sparse and utilitarian. And the only other negative of the newer one is parking and maneuverability in parking lots since it is larger. The towing increase is appealing for a smaller travel trailer. Anything more than like 21 feet and 5500 lbs a pickup would be preferable.
Love the new model. Hate the pricing. So expensive! The outgoing GX460 was always a great package and you were still getting great quality at a fairer price. Been a GX470 & GX460 owner.
I am partial to the interior on the ‘23, but exterior of the ‘24 with the exception of the wheels. Good thing I can’t afford so I won’t have to worry about which one to choose…lol.
I love old school GX 460. Just bought new 2023 model on sale for 55K. I had 2015 model before, but it started leaking oil after 7 years and 40-50 thousand miles. The Lexus dealership said it would cost 5-6K to repair, so I sold it. I bought used Lexus RX 350 after that, but never liked it. BTW, I like rear gate on GX 460. It takes 1-2 seconds to open or close. Electric gate on RX 350 took like 10 seconds to open and close and sometimes it would not open or close. Also that pad on GX 460 is very good for zooming the map. Especially when you're driving. Way easier and safer to zoom than on the touch screen. I'm surprized there is no zoom button on the stearing wheel.
@@alexwalten7 I bought brand new 2023 gx460 premium for 55K in December in Los Angeles. MSRP is 64K. They are in stock right now. At the end of January there was a New Year sale. Sale price was about 59K. I managed to bring price down to 55K. Actually I don’t see many GXs in LA. The gas mileage I’m getting in LA traffic is about 10-11 mpg. Many people are buying electric these days not only to save on gas, but to be able to drive in a car pool lane on a freeway. Maybe that’s why the price in LA is lower than in other cities / states. Not sure. I work from home and don’t drive much, so I don’t care about 10 mpg when I go to a grocery store or visit friends on weekends. I used to have 2015 model which started leaking oil after 7 years and required expensive repair. I was getting about 20 mpg on freeway. I don’t know where that reliability myth is coming from. I don’t think GX 460 is more reliable than other Lexus or Toyota models. I get used to 2015 GX and tried driving RX350 for a year, but then bought brand new 2023 GX model again.
Saw the new one in person yesterday and I must say I prefer the old one. The most annoying thing about the new one is the hood bulge, not good for off-roading unless you are heavily relying on cameras.
Wish they would make an “L” version of this. Lexus and Toyota seem to really be getting away from big FUNCTIONAL SUV’s. I want a usable third row…WITH more trunk space and legit off road chops
As a current version owner…. I have to say the new one looks way better. One thing I’m not sure is the twin turbo engine. We bought our gx because it is supposed to be reliable so time will have to tell if this new generation is as good as the old one. Regarding the review; I really like your dynamic with your son! Tommy always does a really nice job reviewing things! Good job mom and dad!
The new Gx looks nice and more modern but I love the V8 In my gx460 it’s so buttery smooth , but I like horsepower and torque numbers on the V6 349 and 429 but it only gets a couple more MPG’s than Gx 460 , I like the modern updated interior but for now I will wait a few more years and see what the verdict is on the GX 550
@@ALMX5DPill wait years to see if that v6 will be as reliable as the old v8. My boy thats a mechanic is not looking to switch his yet and recommends me to wait aswell.
@@marcelrodriguez2067 good call, always a good thing to wait a couple of years especially after a major redesign just to stay away from some of the teething issues they inevitably have. The new engine likely won’t be as long lasting as the old, but for a vast majority of people it will be a non-issue. Only those keeping their vehicles 15-20+ years will potentially see a difference, or those 2nd or 3rd owners but in those cases used prices should reflect such a difference of expectation.
Impressed with the new one. Hadn’t considered the gx460, but the gx550 is on the short list. I miss tactile buttons. They distract you from the road less and work better (more reliable from a practical human interface perspective). You commented on the poor belt line on the 460 and the overall improved sight lines on the 550, but you didn’t mention whether the belt line was lower (=better) on the 550? I’d LOVE to see the 550 Overtrail get the third row. That would be the package I’d want. Or buy the overtrail and retrofit the seat….
Considering that dealers have been asking over MSRP for new models I can expect 5k markup on the new GX. The current one can be purchased new 4-5k below MSRP easy so price difference may be bigger than expected.
Another great video! I don’t understand why people say that the swing gate is a negative on the GX460. I never hear people make this same argument about the Jeep Wrangler and Ford Bronco, which both have a swing gate that opens on the traffic side.
I think the problem is that unlike the others, the swing gate on the old GX felt pretty heavy for most people, and it probably looked awkward. I personally don't mind the swing gate cuz it's neat and quirky. I can see why most people would prefer Auto lift gates instead cuz they often take these to grocery stores like Walmart and such. And most people don't off road these because of ground clearance.
The front end on the 2024 is much better then the old one , but the rims are better on the old one. The rims on the 2024 look to gawdy and out of place on this truck. I prefer the old school gauges and buttons of the older GX , not a fan of screens and radio and heating controls intergrated into the screen.
I am not a Lexus fan, but the the new Lexus GX is much better than the old one, its a great offroad tool, its more simple and more sophisticated, well done Lexus. amazing review by Tommy and Roman.
I'm with Tommy on the interior... +1 on the buttons and dials (Roman wth?)... also the screen on the old one is fine, what do you need it bigger for? This one's looks like a highway patrol car. The old one much more bucks looking, with the analog gauges etcetera. I'll also take the old school small sunroof over the gargantuan Pano roof that looks like it won't even open? Someone correct me on that. So, in summary I'll take the new model's form factor, its size and better rear cargo utility/seat configuration and conventional hatch (finally!!), combined with the old dash, roof and CD player!
You can order the new one with a solid roof. I have sunroofs in all my cars and I pretty much never open them. It's nice in theory, in practice it never gets used.
If you put all terrain tires on the Premium version, you now have a very good vehicle for getting around town if bad weather and light off roading. The lockers might be absent but this thing will be a beast without having to step up in trim level/cost. But won't look as cool ;)
Thank you Roman and Tommy for the informative review. IMHO, always take the previous model - reliability, even if it is a Toyota. I'm getting old, while I can give up a V6, for a 4cyl, not giving up my V8 for V6
That towing number is really impressive to me. A defender maxes out at about 8k. 9,000 lbs, is way more than anyone would need to tow realistically but it’s still awesome to have regardless. Im definitely a huge fan of the new one. The old one was never my favorite Lexus SUV, interior was super dated, the exterior looked very frumpy, the V8 sounded good and was smooth but it made as much power as a Camry V6 and was just kinda slow. I’m sure the new one won’t be a speed demon but 479lb-ft of torque paired with that 10-speed would make a world of change
Picked up a 2023 Gx Premium in May. I personally favor a little of still having some buttons to control things. I’ll wait a few years for them to get the bugs out before I’ll consider a new one. Word has it already that there are some occasional issues with the engine dynamics, which is already in the tundra. Wait & See😊.
Should I cancel my Ineos Grenadier order and get the GX550 instead? If so, why?….hint the IG is about $16K more expensive than the Overland [not + version]
I still like my ‘23 GX 460 Luxury with sport design package and red interior. The steering wheel is hard wood. It looks more luxurious than the GX 550 plastic looking. Give it 4-5 years and I might consider buying one for my wife.
You guys should do an off-road comparison between the 2024 Landcruiser and the 2024 4runner TRD Pro! They are super close in size and shape, but the price difference is substantial. I'm really curious if the 4runner would be a competitve budget choice.
Great review, guys. It’s definitely on my radar when we buy our next SUV. Like Tommy, I probably prefer a few convenience buttons rather than having to access the screen, and for the Premium + model, I’d like to see Lexus add the Mark Levinson sound system as an option. The Luxury and Luxury + models could probably stand a more premium looking interior given they’re pushing, or more than, 80 grand. And I just don’t understand the green suede on the Overtrail models for some of the interior and exterior colors. But overall, I think it will sell well and be a success for Lexus.
Do an offroad, slip test with all three generations please. The 470 is still a highly sought after overland and off road rig. It would be fun just to see all three and not just the 460

We love our GX as well, and I feel the same as you, I will wait a couple of years and then pick up the hybrid GX or Land Cruiser
The old one looks much better anyway..
@@Armmani2000 Wow. I've actually never heard anyone preferring the old design over the new one! Not a fan of the square body? Or is it more than that?
@@Woah_Look I actually do like the square cars like G wagon and Range Rover, but in this case I think the old one looks classier, I wouldn't mind if they called this a new line, like a luxury Land Cruiser but not a GX replacement if that makes sense.
Want performance? New one better. Want value? Old one much better, since can get them on sale while everyone is getting ready to buy the new ones and be the first subjects to contribute to reliability of new one.
@@alexduque3105you want to not that you need to. Also that downgrade to a v6 is super disappointing to me.
I've always digged a boxy rugged design but personally this new GX just doesn't do it for me, I would really like to like it but I can't, it just looks off and the interior also just doesn't match the exterior very well, its really luxurious on the inside while the outside has a very rugged look, imagine a jeep wrangler with an S-class interior for reference
@@marcelrodriguez2067actually need to because my lease is up lol

And without a significant increase in mpg. The old v8 is one of the most underpowered power units. That thing could seriously last you 500000 miles. Although the new Gx looks gorgeous in photos, up close next to the last generation it actually looks very disappointing. The refinement and class has left Lexus with this newer generation
Looking forward in 15 years to buying the last version of the GX550. Will probably take my 2023 460 to the grave though 🎉!
Love the the new GX. I will say that old track pad works great once you figure it out.
Most people would rather have a functional system. Our 2022 Volvo xc60 infotainment fails all the time. Buttons generally won’t fail
Well it has a factory locker and you can get 33s on it
Uhm... I have a 2021 GX with 33s. The rear locker is nice, but I've never had the need for it in mine with thousands of off road miles.
Agreed, I have 33's on my 460. Lots of off roading. A-trac and crawl control have gotten me through everything from mud rock and sand. Lockers are overrated.
If I have the current 460 I wouldn’t bother to upgrade, but if I’m shopping for a new suv I would wait for the new 550.
@@noeflores5794Lockers are not overrated. Which is why Toyota includes them on their best off-road models. You're just not doing obstacles that need them. Which is fine, the GX is a great light off-roader. But don't spin BS about lockers.
I love the new GX, but I'll gladly keep my 2021 GX460. Then I'll get the GX550 when it's 10 years old :)
I doubt you will want to buy a 10 year old ttv6 with a 100k miles
Old school for me, hopefully buy a low mileage one soon.
The old GX will last for 30 years if you take care of it. The new one?maybe 10, 20 if you are lucky. I like the manual buttons of the old one.
Its all toyota afterall its gonna last good
Gx460 has it's problems.
Interior really feel luxurious
With new model out there I am expecting old one to drop prices , even though I already have 2006-2007 model , I might upgrade to 2020-2022 model
I plan on purchasing my wife a GX550 6 seater Premium Plus. This is a very beautiful and capable SUV for a family of 6.
I have a luxury 460 model with the off road package as well. Love the vehicle and will never sell.
My only issue is losing the v8 for that v6 with less gas mileage. My current 460 is a amazing truck and i was hoping in exchange the gas milage would improve drastically.
We have a 2017 Lexus GX and love it. It certainly is not modern but so comfortable and reliable. Yes we still use our CD player😂
Funny how if this was another brand, there would be a comment about the sea of black in the interior. For the new Lexus costing $85k....not a peep.
The new GX550 is a dream car! wow Looks stunning in white
This is the very first lexus ive ever found visually appealing and the specs match the sauce. Well done Toyota. Id strongly consider a plug in hybrid version
The new Land Cruiser is the same vehicle and will come as a hybrid from the start. I don't think it's a PHEV, however.
Love the 2023. Sooo classy so expensive looking. New does not even have a wood stearing. What a shame at that price point.
I have a 2023 premium+ & too me it looks better inside & out than this 550. Interior on this trim of the 550 looks cheaper than the '23 model.
I like the old one's interior, but I like the new one's Exterior, lol. The front end has always been polarizing to me, looks like a vacuum cleaner on the previous gen, new gen looks much better.
Immeasurably better looking, but damn is the new GX pricey.
strangely it's only a few grand more than the 460 (albeit this is MSRP and who knows how much dealerships are going to mark up). folks were expecting it to be quite a bit more expensive
Compare it against the new Defender and it competes quite well.
Rover's are always too expensive too.@@nothingtoseaheardammit
The old GX was pricey too, cheapest way to get one is buy them lightly used off-lease.
I do prefer the exterior look of the older as opposed to the newer maybe over time I might change my mind
NEW LEXUS GX 😍👍 NEW LUXURY OFFROAD KING 👑
They made a transition from luxury to utility and they’ll probably lose lots of traditional buyers who are not like the new design
Compared to a Tahoe they're really not that much more expensive for legendary reliability
The old one is obviously way better still.

The new GX looks amazing only issue is the plastic dash. They should have leather on the dashboard. For a luxury SUV thats a letdown
No, it will just shrink & fail in hot climates like every other leather dash. A good quality plastic is much more durable and Toyota knows that.
@@ckm-mkc the land cruiser has a leather dash!! Lived most of my youth in Africa and leather holds up well no issues
Lexus uses midrange leather. Better than Honda. Way worse than Rover... but price reflects that.
Great video. I really wish I could get this car loaded with smaller wheels that would ride better and where I could actually find snow tires.
You bought a new 2023 gx460 for how much? What trim model? We’ve been looking for a while and they re not wanting to discount much smh. CONGRATS!!
For some reason the edit doesn’t work. The sale was at the end of December. I bought the car at the end of December, around Christmas.
I bought a 23 GX cuz I personally don’t like the look of the 550 , it’s too off road looking
Cannot wait for a towing test!
The new GX is stunning. They did a fantastic job on the redesign. I just wish the MPG was better. 25mpg minimum in 2024.
I like how the new GX looks, but I wish they kept the V8!
Old one looks more luxurious more premium material we’re as the new one looks cheaper plastic
I love this new GX550. One issue at least for me and my family is that there is no 3rd row in the Overtrail model…
I prefer the old one exterior design.
So does every dentist

@@marcelrodriguez2067 good call, always a good thing to wait a couple of years especially after a major redesign just to stay away from some of the teething issues they inevitably have. The new engine likely won’t be as long lasting as the old, but for a vast majority of people it will be a non-issue. Only those keeping their vehicles 15-20+ years will potentially see a difference, or those 2nd or 3rd owners but in those cases used prices should reflect such a difference of expectation.
Exterior of the new with the drivetrain and interior of the old.
I like the look of the new one but I like the interior of the old. Too much tech is meh
I am looking forward to the off road review. Hopefully it does better than the Land Rover Pretender one they did a year or so ago.
I’ll take the 23. Not a fan off all the tech… I prefer the old and trusty philosophy.
Welcome. I love this Lexus model. I own 2001 Land Cruiser 100 4.2 diesel 50th anniversary . Super video as always👌👍. Greetings from Poland😁😁
Were there any examples of the lower price versions of the GX at this event? It often seems that these 60K versions are only theoretical.
@@ckm-mkcI have a full pano in my Cadillac and they only open half way. Also causes a weird wind tunnel effect unless you open your other windows.
If you put all terrain tires on the Premium version, you now have a very good vehicle for getting around town if bad weather and light off roading. The lockers might be absent but this thing will be a beast without having to step up in trim level/cost. But won't look as cool ;)
I liked the older GX470 better than the newer GX460...
Tommy! I love that you're rocking several of Swatch's collaborative watches.
Thank you Roman and Tommy for the informative review. IMHO, always take the previous model - reliability, even if it is a Toyota. I'm getting old, while I can give up a V6, for a 4cyl, not giving up my V8 for V6
Thanks for sharing!
Next to each other the newer looks like a ford or something from the front
Whenever you are comparing those fuel economy numbers, you really need to be explaining that you also have to use premium over regular unleaded
As far as the CD player, I believe the Subaru outback still has a CD player in its 2023 model
The 2024 Lexus IS and RC models still come with CD players as well.
that cd music quality 🤌
I use it to watch DVDs in the car still 😂
That towing number is really impressive to me.
Delivery dates, delivery dates, allocations, delivery dates, when are dealers getting them, #1 question on our minds.
That looks good in white
Picked up a 2023 Gx Premium in May. I personally favor a little of still having some buttons to control things. I’ll wait a few years for them to get the bugs out before I’ll consider a new one. Word has it already that there are some occasional issues with the engine dynamics, which is already in the tundra. Wait & See😊.
Should I cancel my Ineos Grenadier order and get the GX550 instead? If so, why?….hint the IG is about $16K more expensive than the Overland [not + version]
Thanks for saying it...old school gauges feels more upscale. Screens instead of gauges, makes a vehicle feel cheaper.
I'm really curious if the 4runner would be a competitve budget choice.
not just a CD player, its a DVD player!
I'm in camp Tommy...love the new GX, but damn, Toyota has done a good job with buttons until now (LC has em still).
The main competitors/market is for those that can’t/don’t wanna stretch for x5/gle/q8. X7 is a league above, no one’s cross shopping them
I love the new off road version!! ❤
Do an offroad, slip test with all three generations please. The 470 is still a highly sought after overland and off road rig. It would be fun just to see all three and not just the 460
I like the old school GX 460 and the Overtrail since it’ll be a while and I’m done buying used with my last purchase of my headache 2005 Outback XT.
Lol done buying used...you don't buy a used Subaru
