AMD What a breath of fresh air you provide the DIYers. Your candor and honesty in reviewing Toyota/Lexus vehicles along with your pragmatic maintenance instruction is the very best. After much thought and research I purchase two new GX460s in 2023 and I could not be happier with my decision. I never plan to off road these vehicles and knowing I purchased the final iteration of the 460 with all the updates incorporated into the last model was the key factor in my purchase decision. Over the years I have owned four Landcruisers (three 80 series and a 100 series) actually still own a 96' 80 series with 85K in showroom condition. I have always done all my own basic maintenance including fluid changes and brake/rotor replacements. Sadly, it appears the complexity of all newer generation auto design will make that more problematic going forward. Again, well done my friend and blessings to your and your family from Atlanta Georgia Cheers
Yes, I made the same decision as well. The Lexus sales staff informed me that the 23 was the last year of the V8 and that the new GX 550 was going to have a very long wait list time and that could be up to a year or more! One test drive in the GX 460 sold me!! I loved the ride, the comfort and the plush interior. I was coming off an FJ Cruiser, so this GX was a big step up for me, I loved all the old school features and if I wanted power and acceleration I would have purchased a Lexus LC, an SUV is not a sports vehicle and the way traffic congestion is proceeding, going faster from on e stop light to another is stupid and inefficient.
I'm sure that like the outgoing V8 the V6 in this is severly underpowered. On purpose of course. I have 0 doubt that in 5 years time this V6 will be considered extremly reliable.
Thanks AMD! Your reviews are providing us with information and a perspective found nowhere else. I am enthusiastic about this new GX, and as an off-roader, find the Overtrail+ very attractive. I’ve also heard that the engine in the GX550 has smaller turbo chargers to help spool up quicker for more off-road usable torque. So that’s another reason that it dropped its HP number compared to the LX.
@@samuelgatton That’s cool, but while it may be the same “model” of turbocharger, the internals and whole unit is probably built to Lexus specific specs. Similar to how a lot of brands now use ZF8 transmissions, but they are built to spec for the manufacturer and vehicle type and use case.
Considering all of the mechanical improvements to the GX550, particularly the Overtrail, over the previous model I can forgive the interior being less “sophisticated”. @yamafanboy5514 Huh??? The 1UR is well known to be a reliable and trouble-free engine. I have only ever had a single GX460 come into the shop for something besides normal wear and tear: a coolant valley plate leak. I service LOTS of them and the people who own them are very happy. I am not sure where you're getting your info from...
The coolant valley leak, air suspension, and intake pump(if not cared for from previous owners), are all expensive repairs. Just because it’s a Toyota Prado with more features doesn’t mean it’s doesn’t cost more to repair, it definitely does.
@yamafanboy Nope- the more complex the vehicle, the higher the cost to maintain and repair, that is a reason why auto insurance is climbing so much in. order to make even simple repairs requires a lot of expense. My FJ Cruiser was the essence of simplicity and a true off-road vehicle compared to these new expensive %70-80K monsters. Try rock climbing in the GX vice a Jeep Wrangler or old FJ.
I agree this was the most comprehensive review I’ve seen. You’re so knowledgeable I wish I could bring my cars to you if you were closer to me. Thanks for your honesty and not fluff like other reviews.
I completely agree with the loss of sophistication compared to the GX 460. When I saw it at the car show earlier this year and sat in inside I thought it lacked soul. From the outside it does look muscular and rugged and ready for trails.
One design feature not mentioned here is the approach angle of the GX550 which is now 26°. That is an improvement over the GX460 which is a pathetic 21° (2014-2023 models). The 2010-2013 GX is 28° and the GX470 is 30°.
well it's not pathetic when you consider that the greatest approach object most GX owners will face is a obtrusive curb! As so mentioned in the video 90% of SUVs in general never leave the road or pavement.
I’ve had an LX 600 for about 6 months and really like the power train. Hopefully, it’ll hold up over the long term because my LX is a keeper! I suspect these GXs will sell as fast as dealers can get them…
@LBSeeinYa How If ya never test drove the latest Infiniti? Modern Toyotas are a diw grade from 2010 Toyota which is a downgrade from 90s Toyota, etc. Today's Lexus are a Toyota without the Lexus touch. Unlike Infinitis made in Japan, Lexus moved their production to Canada in mid 2000s and now with the latest ones such as the TX are made in Indiana. That's going to be a hard pass for me. If it's American made, might as well get a Chevy Tahoe/Suburban Z71 diesel.
Well, your concern is why I went ahead and put a deposit on a 550 Overtrail+ that is arriving mid August. Off-road capabilities were number one. I was also considering the new Land Cruiser but the GX in my view is better. Now, I am coming from a 4Runner TRD-Pro that is totally tricked out for off-roading (lift, big tires, rock sliders, rack, lights, winch etc.). So, off-roading capability is a big deal. The interior luxury, the seats, 14" display, Mark Levinson stereo etc., etc. also makes this special. I tried the adjustments on the seats at the dealer and was amazed with the lumbar support adjustments as well.
23:02 @thecarcarenut - The spare tire chain is part of the pulley system to lower the spare down. I wondered myself until I removed the spare for rust proofing and watched it work. Thanks for the review, enjoying my 2012 GX and interesting to see where the new one has gone.
I watched your video and bought a 2023 Black Edition. Like you said, the interior and handling gave me a “zen/timeless feeling. I will never off-road. I don’t like the new one.
After watching many hours of videos, I finally found one that addressed the Mode Select Button and rotary dial. Thanks so much. Very informative video.
First thing I would do is throw out the stupid tow hit hitch cover! Again what’s the recommended pin length given the small gap to insert it on either side?
An excellent review. Although, I wouldn't take it off roading, I still love the rugged off roady look of 550. It's beautiful and different from the usual sophisticated (kinda mild) looks of other luxury brands.
You are right about the sophistication part for the new Lexus Gx550 I think they were so focused on beating the new defender that they forgot about what made the old Gx so good
I think it looks much better than the previous. Hate the grill design language of recent Toyota/Lexus lineup. I wish they had 18 inch wheel option for the base model and it cost in the range of the old one
Have owned a GX 460 and GX 470. Just purchased the 550 Overland and it's a huge improvement in every way. Yes, I was concerned about the loss of the V8 but this new engine is so smooth and more responsive. I was considering purchasing the LX 600 when this became available. After driving this, I can't imagine the LX 600 (at $120K) providing a better experience. Don't overanalyze this 550...just enjoy it as I do.
That comment left me asking myself “why am I buying a GX550 if the sophistication is gone? I may as well just sacrifice the double laminate glass and buy the new Toyota Land Cruiser and save 10’s of thousands of dollars!”.
@@beri232is it confirmed that the laminate glass is not in the LC250? I’m assuming it actually is still there as the Grand Highlander even has it surprisingly. It used to be a luxury car thing only tho.
@@beri232you will not save anything. This Lexus is already much more ready for offroad than the new LCs. E-KDSS gives it the most wheel travel than any other Toyotas. The tire wells are larger, making it easier to install bigger tires. It can pull 9000 lbs instead of 6000 lbs. it’s a V6 -2Turbos not a L4 Turbo The shields are more beefy. The front bumper here is made in 3 parts so easier to replace and install winch. Not so in LCs and on and on the differences go on. You get an upgraded LC with the techs in the GX, it’s not just luxury.
Welcome to a company that has like 200 billion in debt. And EV companies are eating into their customer base / competition coming for Toyota sales crown.
Don't worry about having a '23 and not going off road, you are in good company my friend. I bought one too and even installed a full $1200 1/4" thick set of aluminum skid plates from the front tow hooks out past the center diff. I will never go on more than a fire road at 30mph at most. But at least I am not afraid of having a shovel lodged into my frame (again) after it falls off of a dump truck on the highway 👍
I heard the GX has smaller turbos, which would make sense as I recall seeing specs that show it producing peak power at a lower rpm (4800 vs 5200) and peak torque starting from a lower rpm as well (2000 vs 2400).
@@jamesemanner9671 it's not detuned, just differently tuned (produces the same torque). I dont mind the premium fuel requirement, i think it can actually help keep egts down when throttle position and load are high.
Great video I have 2015 GX I got Brand New. My wife wants to upgrade to this model thanks for helping me make a decision great information. I told her we should get a two year old LX.
I have a 2023 GX460 with the V8 engine, I think I will be keeping it for a while since I’m nervous about the V6 twin turbo and all the complications 😱. Thanks for your excellent review 👍
I’m not convinced yet either. The other major concern that is already apparent is the cost of ownership will be significantly increased. Unless you can learn to work on these yourself, the amount of labor to work on this vs the 4.6 will make even “simple” jobs more expensive.
About tonneau cover. Actually, for the previous generation, it was a smart design. You can pack it like a sandwich and store it behind 3rd row seats. There's even a strap on both sides.
1 in 20 off roading a GX seems pretty conservative I would have pegged it at 1 in 100 or more. That said, a Mercedes G-wagon is a very capable off-roader and almost no one uses it that way either.
I owned for many years a 2018 Lexus GX 460 luxury and I traded it in for 2021 Lexus LX 570 and as much as I love the 2021 Lexus LX 570. I miss my GX 460 so when I get a chance in the future, I am definitely going to purchase, a 2023 Lexus GX for 60 hopefully a luxury build and after watching this very helpful and informative video I will tell you I am not going to purchase Lexus GX 550… I think from an objective and subjective standpoint you hit a bull’s-eye on this video and I feel that it’s definitely not worth the money and not built the way I thought maybe five or six years they will get all these engineering mishaps fixed… With the GX I remember as early as 2004 they really didn’t come out with a good GX 2022 and 2023 so they do a little at a time so I’ll watch it over the next five or six years… Thank you for making a fantastic video. This really gave me a lot of insight without having to do it myself. God bless.🇺🇸🙏
The tone you said "it will scratch your entire interior" with caused me to immediately cackle 😂 . 21'GX owner here and I'm pretty sure the first week I owned it I lost a part of my soul when I saw the scratches from putting that tonneau cover in and out the first time.

I completely agree with the loss of sophistication compared to the GX 460. When I saw it at the car show earlier this year and sat in inside I thought it lacked soul. From the outside it does look muscular and rugged and ready for trails.
For when you want to drive a F-150 but your country club has standards 🤣 That is one large vehicle
It’s way smaller in person than in pics or the way it looks on video btw
Its a midsized suv. Its smaller than a Chevy Tahoe
I suspect these GXs will sell as fast as dealers can get them…
I love my 23 GX.. now I'm eying the LX next
Trade it for luxurious nissan gtr suv called the new Japanese 25 infiniti qx80 (LX600 is their main target)
@@sportsinvestor101 hard pass
@LBSeeinYa How If ya never test drove the latest Infiniti? Modern Toyotas are a diw grade from 2010 Toyota which is a downgrade from 90s Toyota, etc. Today's Lexus are a Toyota without the Lexus touch. Unlike Infinitis made in Japan, Lexus moved their production to Canada in mid 2000s and now with the latest ones such as the TX are made in Indiana. That's going to be a hard pass for me. If it's American made, might as well get a Chevy Tahoe/Suburban Z71 diesel.
@@sportsinvestor101 the LX 600 and 300 Series LC are made entirely in Japan. Which is different from Canada
Thank you for such a good technical review.
23:02 @thecarcarenut - The spare tire chain is part of the pulley system to lower the spare down. I wondered myself until I removed the spare for rust proofing and watched it work. Thanks for the review, enjoying my 2012 GX and interesting to see where the new one has gone.
Glad to see the butter smooth V6 is still here and all of these will be made in Japan! Sign me up!!
it's not the same reliable 3.5 V6 though.
May not be the same but it’s Toyota…
The GX never came with a V6 before.
That V-6 is pretty new.
This V6 has been around since ‘18 in the LS 500 - great pwr plant!! Have a ‘20 LS 500 F Sport - no issues!
Dear Sir, thank you for all you share with all of us. Your content is veary accurate and professional without any fuss. We love you so much.
I watched your video and bought a 2023 Black Edition. Like you said, the interior and handling gave me a “zen/timeless feeling. I will never off-road. I don’t like the new one.
I bought a 22'. Slow, heavy, guzzles gas. I love it.
we bought a 2023, wife really doesnt like the new style.
Same here . I'm new in this Lexus community but 2021 GX i love it so far ... Strong , Slow Samurai Tank 😊
You made a very wise decision too! This new GX 550 is overly complex, expensive to buy and repair, and not as luxurious as the 460!
The gx550 isn’t made in 2023…
i was waiting for this video!!!! only review i can truly trust
😊 thank you AMD. I was waiting for this one
After watching many hours of videos, I finally found one that addressed the Mode Select Button and rotary dial. Thanks so much. Very informative video.
I love your car reviews. Because unlike a lot of other car reviewers you can get technical. I was thinking FJ the moment i seen that windshield.
Loved my old FJ Cruiser- the true off-road vehicle that was super-simple, rugged and very reliable.
First thing I would do is throw out the stupid tow hit hitch cover! Again what’s the recommended pin length given the small gap to insert it on either side?
Thanks!
I want one but also can’t wait for you to review the Toyota LC and 2025 new 4Runner :)
Lincoln needs to start watching these videos.
Modern Ford is just pumping out garbage at this point. Everything except their 3/4 ton or bigger trucks.
An excellent review. Although, I wouldn't take it off roading, I still love the rugged off roady look of 550. It's beautiful and different from the usual sophisticated (kinda mild) looks of other luxury brands.
Thank you for your review. I trust your thoughts. I was looking for info on the hitch and you’re the only one I know of who spent some time on it.
The one I have been waiting for. Thank you!
Your perspective is thought-provoking. All the best!
Toyota has another winner on their hands with this
You are right about the sophistication part for the new Lexus Gx550 I think they were so focused on beating the new defender that they forgot about what made the old Gx so good
I think I would go the 2023 GX route
You will be glad that you did
Good , nobody cares.
I’m happy with the purchase of my 23 GX460 ❤the V8!!!
the 2023's will have higher resale value than the newer ones
@@jima7756tf?
AMD notices everything. The cutout in the body for the rear shocks was the winner for me. Awesome review AMD. That’s what we come here for…
It looks so much better
I think it looks much better than the previous. Hate the grill design language of recent Toyota/Lexus lineup. I wish they had 18 inch wheel option for the base model and it cost in the range of the old one
This, Savage Geese, and Driving Sports TV are where it’s AT
Have owned a GX 460 and GX 470.
Always look forward to your technical review and this overall review l was looking forward to , thank you so much.
Every GX 550 potential buyer should watch this video!
Yep, itnonly reinforce my decision to buy it
Sophistication gone = This feels like a really put together/upgraded Toyota and not the historical luxurious Lexus.
That comment left me asking myself “why am I buying a GX550 if the sophistication is gone? I may as well just sacrifice the double laminate glass and buy the new Toyota Land Cruiser and save 10’s of thousands of dollars!”.
@@beri232more like $10 lol. You won’t save very much.
Bulls on Parade. Love it!
Excellent review. Really enjoyed this. Thanks
My goodness it looks so good
@@ark-transport9626 Lol relax, you can not like it if you don’t. I can like it if i did. Carry on
Waiting for this review, thank you!
I heard the GX has smaller turbos, which would make sense as I recall seeing specs that show it producing peak power at a lower rpm (4800 vs 5200) and peak torque starting from a lower rpm as well (2000 vs 2400).
Great point, my gut instincts tell me it will probably last a lot longer because less forced turbo compression.
Unfortunately, requires premium fuel. Doesn't make sense, being detuned from the Tundra.
I told her we should get a two year old LX.
love your content, you well cover the car espicaly underneath
keep going you are the best
I have a 2023 GX460 with the V8 engine, I think I will be keeping it for a while since I’m nervous about the V6 twin turbo and all the complications 😱. Thanks for your excellent review 👍
If Toyota can get these little bitty turbo charged engines to last as long as the previous models,it’ll be a miracle.
It’s possible but just as with any engine the user plays big part in making it last long as well.
@theholt2ic219 yeah ? Tell that to Ford owners 😂
@@TypicalGuy84Exactly. Ford.
3.4 litres is hardly small
I’m not convinced yet either. The other major concern that is already apparent is the cost of ownership will be significantly increased. Unless you can learn to work on these yourself, the amount of labor to work on this vs the 4.6 will make even “simple” jobs more expensive.
About tonneau cover. Actually, for the previous generation, it was a smart design. You can pack it like a sandwich and store it behind 3rd row seats. There's even a strap on both sides.
Toyoda is changing everything. They are doing what Mercedes did 15 or 20 years ago. Killing the one thing they are most noted for, reliability.
Toyota has already been changing and are still topping charts of JDP / CR reliability reports, that's the big differences there
Love the new additions: the actual numbers for hp and torque and the little illustrative figures when you talk about the engine!
CCN’s silence on the twin turbo V6 recall is deafening. I am keen to get his take on it.
Sounds like Toyota addressed and corrected the issue. Machining debris is no longer a concern.
He has a whole video on it
While the others reviewing cup holders, I call this one is the real one!!!!
Looking for more videos!
1 in 20 off roading a GX seems pretty conservative I would have pegged it at 1 in 100 or more. That said, a Mercedes G-wagon is a very capable off-roader and almost no one uses it that way either.
@@chibbyylol and a $75K plus Lexus isn't? LOL
The g wagon weighs over 6k pounds which is why a lot of rich people buy it, for tax incentives. You can claim the entire vehicle for your business

On that hitch, is there even enough room to get a pin in to hold the receiver in place?
The tone you said "it will scratch your entire interior" with caused me to immediately cackle 😂 . 21'GX owner here and I'm pretty sure the first week I owned it I lost a part of my soul when I saw the scratches from putting that tonneau cover in and out the first time.
