Whoever is designing the recent Toyota trucks, tundra, Tacoma, gx, and landcruiser 250 needs a raise…. This gx is like peak suv….. from design to drivetrain to interior and features is practically perfect
Exactly this!
Let’s hope that Toyota recall on the 3.4 V6 doesn’t slide into the GX’s life. I’m concerned as it’s the same engine .. Time will tell, for now I took my name off of the waiting list. Maybe wait for the 2025 to be introduced.
I can’t believe how much better the overtrail looks compared to the luxury.
That Nori Green looks amazing.
I've watched I believe six different reviews on the GX550, and this one by far was the best in my opinion. Nicely done!
Wow, thanks!
Gx 460 will forever be the best and iconic. Especially the black line edition.
Thanks David, I have been waiting for this review.
Thanks! Been waiting for your impressions of the GX550 for a long time.
This GX just incredible 😊 thanks a lot very informative video😊
David, really enjoying the content. Keep up the great reviews. The information you provide is second to none and helps us less knowledgeable car enthusiasts.
Best GX 550 review to date. Great analysis and takes
Great job; loved the review.
Great, very detailed review, David. Your objective, highly informed reviews are gold. I'd love to have a Nori Green Overtrail+. Hopefully one day.
David, absolutely love your Toyota/ Lexus reviews. I was a previous 5th gen 4Runner and GX460 owner. Looking forward to getting back into a 550 soon.
😊😊, but .😊
I didn’t think you could get the over trail with Captain seats in the second row? Also, it looks like it had a third row which in other videos mentioned you don’t get a third row in the over trail?
Beautiful vehicle! Thank you David for all you do for us. Greatly appreciated……-Angela
Thank you for a great review!
Great review as always 👍
David, Thanks for the highly detailed report. We are looking forward to the 2024 GX being added to your fleet alongside the new Land Cruiser. 😁😉
I always follow your reviews on lexus vehicles thank you
Thank you David for the detailed review of the GX. For sure, Toyota did an amazing job on brinking the GX to market. I am waiting on your future review of the Land Cruiser 250 which is the one my Toyota dealer will be getting for me.
Hello David, I've been following you for some time now and I find your channel informative, very well done and your presentation is brilliant. I see you are also friends with AMD at The Car Care Nut, I think you two are incredible and I love watching your great videos. Thank you David.
That looks so good! Love the new design!
Love your insight on the Gx550! Having own multiple 80 series, old school solid Front axle, Im looking forward to test out the Gx550.
@blackdiamondoffthegrid. Bro ! At 26:38 he is driving right past my house in this video. I wish I had known they were going to be here. How frustrating🤣 🤣 I wanna see this thing so bad.
Great review. I just wish I could find the Overtrail without a huge mark up. I called my dealer, and they ask $35k above the MSRP price… nuts. I need to look outside of CA.
great to hear 18 and 20 rides better you are making it easier for my decision make more GX videos please
22:05
This not pre production ,
This production one
Nice vehicle .. love that green color .. need more greens and browns ..
Wow. An amazing review. Would you say the overtrail model has a quiet cabin on the highway? Quietness is a key criterion for me. Many thanks.
I've always admired Lexus interior designs. In my view, they showcase the art of Japanese craftsmanship in tactile and sensory. The materials and palette are spot on, and they pay attention to all the details!
the new landcruiser and this are such good looking vehicles
Thanks for the review - do you think this would make a good replacement for a Land Rover Discovery 4? I love my Disco 4 and enjoy the similarly chunky, utilitarian looks of the GX - particularly the Overtrail.
Sounds like David WILL like it once he gets used to it, the engine and steering.... Pretty sure I wil stick to my old "GX!
Great review David. What are your thoughts on the Overtrail vs Overtrail+? Does the Heads Up Display add value or just a gimmick?
Overtrail+ just has more tech features so it really depends on whether those items matter to you...
Hi David,
This is one of my favorite videos because you have the designers opinion, and yours combined with the engineering which makes it almost perfect… And what I mean by that is I personally feel I wouldn’t even have to go out and test drive it because you’re doing all the work for me and for everybody that’s watching That’s just my personal opinion but I think that’s fantastic because you’re getting the knowledge from the highest level… this was an outstanding video, and this is why David, you are the best of the best of the best. Thank you so much for bringing this cutting edge technology to the world.🇯🇵🤍❤️🌎
Thank you so much Jimmy! You always so kind!
tbh that 3rd row view is misleading, since you have the 2nd row not only down, but also pulled up all the way. showing a picture with the 2nd row down and someone of average height in the 3rd row would be more accurate. Love your videos overall though. Can't wait to see your overview of the hybrid once it's available!!
Thanks for the details. Looks like another Lexus I’ll be getting. 2025 model year.
@automotivePress david ,,,, will we see a plug hybrid of gx 550 soon?
Nice one
Can you get a cool 🆒 box as an option for any trim level? Does the gx in your video have the cool box?
Can you add a third row back if I buy the overtrail ? The mounting points are all there
Did they get rid of the rear hvac ceiling vents? Looks like the 2nd row seats no longer fold flat.
Would be interested in braking dynamics of over trail with KDSS. I had a 2010 4Runner with the KDSS and the nose dive on heavy braking was kinda scary and comical.
Looks like a great set up long road trips.
Why nobody talks about why they give you the de-tunned version of the V6?
Nori Green Pearl is THE color for the 2024 GX
I'd get the premium for $64k, and swap out the base wheels for nicer 20s
Save you over $15k from the Luxury+
I expect the hybrid to be the TC Hybrid Plug-in, with 404 HP, based on the 3.4 TT V6
David, why doesn't the 2nd row on all TGNA PLATFORMS slide for and aft? Also, wasn't there any way to package the battery better? I believe 2nd row room on LX, gx, and LC is the same
Hi David, Thanks for such a detailed and thoughtful report. I was leaning towards the luxury+ but the 22” tires give me pause due to the road noise/vibration and lack of two-tone paint options. I guess I could always replace the L+ with 20” tires.
Does the L+ panoramic sunshade come with an interior blackout cover? Ugh. My ideal (future) trim would be Overtrail+ in Incognito with a third row and the panoramic sunshade. Maybe Lexus will offer this in 2025. Perhaps I just hold on to my 2020 Land Cruiser for another year. Excited to see trim levels at the Chicago Auto Show next week.
Had the same thought. Luxury + in two tones and smaller tires would have been ideal
I've watched alot of videos on the new GX550 but no one has mentioned whether or not it has an in built trailer brake controller like the Land cruiser 250, did you see one during your test drives?
So David correct me if I’m wrong. I thought the luxury plus has some added feature to make it smooth and quiet on the road?
This looks good, I think I’ll give up my 100 series for this.
Does the moonroof have a cover that closes off the glass completely?
Does the overtrail and overtail plus have same ride quality?
Sir, should I purchase this body or the 2023 GX 460
Hi David, I’m also an engineer so I enjoy your videos. I have a 2023 GX460 V8 model myself and like it, these vehicles cost a lot of money so if you want to buy one the new V6 turbo is concerning to me since it’s quite complex and very new. I’ve heard of problems with this engine in other Toyota models over the past year so it’s going to take Toyota time to resolve these issues. Personally I would put off this new model till Toyota demonstrates that the engine is reliable otherwise it’s going to be a pain in the behind. It’s always best to give a new design a few years to work out the problems. Personally I’m very interested in how Toyota is going to address these engine problems since several of these engines had to be rebuilt after only 10,000 KM’s.
PS: Thank you for your careful, well-informed reviews.
My goodness I'm getting one of these!😵
David, many thanks as always for your detailed, informative and technical engineering based reviews. I currently own a 2022 LX600S, as soon as they release the new GX in Australia. I have my name down for the Overlander, trade or sell it privately.
Do you have any information are they planning to release them with V6 and hybrid version combined? Best regards Clive.
I think the hybrid version of the GX will use the 2.4L turbo hybrid (same as Land Cruiser)
I will wait for hybrid, guess would be above 80k@@AutomotivePress
Should I wait for the hybrid for resale value down the road?
What is the lug pattern size? Will 24 wheels fit the 23 and older GX?
Which one should I get the gx or the LX
David, would love to buy your Nori Green GX460 BL 2023
David, could I trouble you to convince people the premium or premium plus will be more than adequate for all of their needs? I don’t want to have to fight people for my overtrail! 😅
Thinking trading my 2023 Gx460 Blackline for this new Gx . I love the body design of the new Gx
David I’m in N Florida and have a deposit down on GX 550 , when do you think they will hit E Coast ?
Probably in a few months...
Much better design than the LX - I might pick one of theee up in a few years time.
The issue is the limitations of the overtrail packages; no third row, no full panoramic sunroof, no option for heads up display, massaging seats etc etc.. You mention how you love the interior of the luxury and the exterior of the overtrail without specifying each package. I’ll end up with one but as of rt now it’s difficult to decide which with the lack of options in the overtrail packages.
Dang it, now you have me dropping plans on the 23 😂
Starting to get scared that I want the + version of the OT now... Just for the sound system :/
I really like the premium feel of the gx550. As a current 4ruuner owner, what worries me is the ekdss. Ive seen a lot of those leaks prematurely and people who have this deleted the whole system. I doubt you can do the same with the 550 as its electronic and throw some codes if you dedided to do so along the way, but its still early to tell so we will see. But damn it looks so good.
21:00 best part lol
David do you think the GX will canabalize the few consumers looking at the LX ?
Does it still need premium gas?
I loved you in the movie rush hour.
Really love the features on the Luxury+ but your analysis of the stability of the overtrail 33in tires is really starting to sway me....
Needs some leather on the dash and it will be my perfect car. Still going to get the Overtrail though
David, my salesperson told me the vehicle was going to start being built February 1, 2024. Now this has changed and cannot provide a date nor a reason for the delay. I put a deposit down in June. Do you know why there is a delay. Also - is the Overtrail the only two row vehicle? What is happening with toyota parts in Japan - is that causing delay? Thanks.
They have a month off due to the Lunar New Year
Engine soud through the speakers? Why? I assume you can shut that off?
What's the chance of having Lunar rock color, Lexus?
Given it uses turbo, will this last as long as a gx460?
Highly doubtful. It will be reliable but not as reliable as the v8 over the long haul.
I hope they make a F-sport with the red interior.
I'm very interested in the 550 GX Overtrail, but I'm concerned that it needs premium fuel. On my ranch we have regular gas and we're a long way from town. Will the engine be damaged by using regular gas?
No you can use regular fuel. The vehicle will produce less power and will be a bit less efficient, but there is no damage to the engine using regular fuel.
Thank you for your response, David. I recall in the past with cars that required premium where we were using regular that we'd hear "pinging" or pre-ignition from the engine. I'd always assumed that this would have caused damage to the engine. Is this assumption incorrect?@@AutomotivePress
@@Pilotsf Modern engines have sensors that allow for automatic adjustments and therefore there will be no pings or damages to the engine
David: Thanks so much for this educated response! I'm a strong Toyota fan and now drive my 4th 4Runner and my wife drives her 2nd LS 430. Their reliability is unbeatable! My wife's LS 430 is 23 years old with 180K miles and purrs like a kitten, and my 4Runner is 10 years old and going strong. I don't need a new ride to replace the 4Runner, but darn, this 550 GX is really nice!!@@AutomotivePress
Can you get over trail without 3rd row seat?
overtrails don’t have a 3rd row. Just the premiums and luxery versions.
Do you think that the build quality of the upcoming 4Runner will be the same or will the 2024 GX/Landcruiser be more durable?
Usually Lexus are built in a more precise tolerance than a Toyota and they usually use more sound deadening and in some instances thicker sheet metal. Also better and usually a bit thicker paint. I was working at quality control in Lexus manufacturing
What about Land Cruiser?
any wood trim interior?
There are some black wood trims but only tiny bit...
The overlander needs a third row. Otherwise, it would be the one to get.
only car i would ever want
I've been thinking of making the electric jump with the next purchase, but this truck may be the last ICE for me. I could buy and keep it for life. Give the EV's another year or two to mature.
The tundra hybrid system would have been fun. 😂
That’s a hit
I’m always behind the trends when it comes to what’s new. I am sure it is more improved than the current model but I don’t think I like the styling as much as the current model.
Pretty sure this one will grow on you... the vehicle is far more purposeful, less tied to Lexus traditional Lexus styling cues. I have a GX460, and I would think.of.them differently...but still full of precision build quality.
@@eg4449 I think planned obsolescence is partially true due to business economics. Once the reputation of reliable product has been established the business has to cash in. The build quality for these Lexus will still be Japanese but the increased number of parts(turbo) and reduced quality if materials (polyurethane) will reduce reliability.
would you guys choose this over an ecoboost raptor?
How can you tell Toyota/Lexus is giving some freebies - all the RUclipsrs are there !!!
Let's let this video be ANOTHER reminder that we all need to calm down then a company changes a vehicle.
Anyone else remember the outrage of going to a V6?😂😂😂
Overtrail drives better bc Lexus omitted the KDSS out of the non overtrail trims which are standard on all trims of the outgoing model.
Overtrail is actually better than the 600 because this 550 Overtrail has EKDSS, and LX600 does not.
Yes it's more modern and up to date but from the videos and pictures so far it seems like the older gx 460 may feel from premium from inside. That wood trim steering wheel, premium knobs and plush seats with better color options inside.
Hows compare to lx600?
It's surprisingly similar in feel.
35k to 40k less than LX
I think, they need to refresh the LX ASAP.
This GX is too close or even better than the current version of the LX and much better value.
I would prefer 18 or 19 inch tires
David, don't you think its ground clearance a little bit disappointing for an off road car?
It's very good for a luxury SUV, and there are many things they did to make it easier to off-road this vehicle
❤
