"It might be time to upgrade," said the 1st Gen, 1st year GX Guy. 2003, 4.7L V8, 256k miles still beautiful and reliable. My 90 year old, Anti Toyota Dad loves it.
David, this is one of the best comparisons I have seen. I really appreciate your direct style allowing us to make a choice but also offering your opinion from time to time on the items you had experience with. Thanks again.
Hi David. Just found your channel and love it! No music, drone shots just straight to the point reviews. I owned a Toyota in "79" great car one of if not the best i've ever had. Thanks, new subscriber here.
That stupid battery hump in the trunk.🤦 It's 2024 and yet the designers and engineers at Toyota's R&D department still put the damn spare tire underneath.🙄 Not only the tires get exposed to heat, dirt and grime. It is also difficult to drop and replace them when off-roading. Why can't they do what Jeep did with the new Grand Cherokee 4xe and place the spare inside while the batteries and regen gizmos are retro fitted around it. Also, that cover and bump for the towing hitch looks half baked and rushed.
This is the first video in a long time where I finish it from start to finish. And it was a long one. Loved it man. Keep up this great research and detail
Thank you David for this in-depth review. Great analysis and very helpful points of consideration for buyers. Can’t wait for you have all three (GX 460, GX 550, LC) for side by side comparison reviews. 👏 👏 👏
As others have said, thanks for such a comprehensive, intelligent and straightforward comparison of these two vehicles. Thoroughly enjoyed watching and learning from your videos.
David, I know that current 4runners made in Japan have VIN #'s that start with "J" here in US. If the new Land cruisers are made in two plants in Japan, will we be able to tell by the VIN # which plant they were built in? thx Jerry
To be clear, the new LC doesn’t offer 3rd row only in the US market due to the placement of the battery pack for the hybrid motor where the 3rd row would be. The rest of the world LC comes with 3rd row where diesel and other engine variants (non-hybrid) are available. I suspect when hybrid is offered on the GX, you’ll lose the 3rd row on Lux and Premium trim. Also, the LC for the US market doesn’t offer panoramic roof (only moonroof) whereas a panoramic is available for the rest of the world (no idea why as I type this). The GX pano roof is cool but doesn’t open.
After this comparison showing the limitations of the Land Cruiser I’m encouraged to think that the new 4Runner will lean more towards serious off-roading. Much appreciated.
David, I would say the Land Cruiser with traditional 2 tone paint holds the most appeal. I would not lose any sleep if mine was made in a Hino plant. After all, Hino made the legendary Toyota T100 pickup truck which was probably the last pickup sent to the USA with the Chicken Tax added to the price. In the case of the T100, the Chicken Tax just made it 'finger lickin' good'. BTW David, you aren't fooling any of us, we all know you will be buying the GX and the Land Cruiser. 😁😉😂🤣
Great video, thanks. While I like the LC's MPG, I like less complexity of a non-hybrid power train, and I like not having a big battery bump taking up my trunk space. I also like the second row captain's seating options w/ third row seats in the Lexus. The prices are remarkably close. I will probably wait a couple of years then trade in my 2010 4Runner for a new Lexus GX.
Thanks David. Great review! I’ve always preferred the look of a Land Cruiser over Lexus LX in the past. I agree with every point you mentioned and for the 1st time I’m leaning more towards the Lexus GX Overtrail as well. Something else that I don’t care about the new LC is the step into the cargo area where they are housing the hybrid battery.
I am top of the list with my local Toyota dealer, and I am getting a First Edition in the Heritage Blue. I prefer the Toyota over the Lexus because of the hybrid system (I heard that the GX will get terrible mileage), the retro look and color, and I do not need a third row. I have had a Lexus LX in the past and it was wonderful, but you feel a little ridiculous off-roading in my opinion. My wife has a new Sienna hybrid and we absolutely love that car! (Never thought I would love a minivan.) I just thought I would offer an alternate opinion. The GX should be fantastic but I choose the First Edition.

David - great look at the tow vehicles. However one overlooked item is the decrease in rear space due to raised rear deck for hybrid battery in the LC. You did mention lack of third row seat availability, but I am really curious what the specifications are for interior space LX vs LC and comparison to the 100 series (I don’t need rear seats. One of my 100’s has the second row removed - I need maximum space!). As for MPG - the 27 mpg (I think that spec was pulled) is ‘not realistic’ - am I wrong?

Hi David, What is the “OTD” price do you think we should pay for 1) Land cruiser mid trim with and without 5 K package. 2) Lexus GX 550 Premium plus? Thanks a lot
Excellent video David. Can’t see a GX 550 going out the door for less than $70k seeing as how a stripped LC will start in the mid $50s. Don’t forget the ADMs. Amazing I paid just under $58k (pretax) for my nicely equipped 22 GX. I thought it was expensive and in retrospect it’s a bargain.
So I have a LC first edition due in June but local Lexus dealer has a base OverTrail with a few options which makes them almost the exact same price. I’m leaning toward the Lexus because of v6 but no hybrid power/2400w inverter. How will the base Lexus sound system compare to a JBL in Toyota LC?
looking forward to updates on both the LC and the GX. We're in the 'quiet before the storm' phase now, as none are on the road quite yet. I really prefer the esthetics (and heritage) of the LandCruiser. I would love the LC with a v6, just for the flat load floor, and potential for 3 rows. The main problem with the hybrid right now, is the space the batteries are taking up in the back. I bet they come out with a 3 row LC later, but can't see how with the battery hump. Looking forward to future updates, shouldn't be too much longer.
Excellent job explaining the differences between the GX and LC! And I fully agree with you regarding the exact same model and color GX you mentioned you want. Just wandering, why is it necessary to use premium fuel with the new GX? We owned a 1999 LC for 12 years and it too was supposed to run on premium gasoline, but it ran just fine on regular/lower octane gasoline. And our LC never had any fuel injector system issues. Plus, yesterday I heard Jerry Reynolds, The Car Pro Guy on AM radio say that he did a comprehensive study a few years and his research determined that all vehicles will run just fine without causing any fuel injector issues using regular low octane gasoline. So, I am a little conflicted as to what to believe. I would appreciate if you can clear that up for me. Thank you as always for producing and sharing your excellent videos.
It has to do with compression ratios. Lexus engines are tuned to 91 octane for higher performance. To be clear, higher performance is achieved not by what fuel is used but by how the fuel is used. 91 octane has a high compression ratio which allows the engine to use more fuel to achieve more power (i.e. pack more fuel into the piston to make a bigger boom = higher power/performance). Sure you can run a lower octane every now and then but you'll eventually damage the engine. Lower octane fuel ignites at a lower pressure meaning ignition happens faster and with less power. In an engine tuned for 91 you'll get engine knock. So when you put premium into an engine that requires 87 you just waste gas. But most modern cars should be smart enough to adapt the timing and many can use 91 for better performance.
The older a vehicle is, like a 20 year old LX470 that recommends premium fuel would benefit much more than an owner of a 4 year new lease. As in, the older it gets, the more it makes sense so those items are well kept. I have 325,000km and 2 timing belt changes and use premium fuel (Costco) all the time! I like it, it’s also better for the environment so take that climate activists.
Thank you for nice technical breakdown. Can you tow either model 4 wheels down? Also if Lexus is reading this, requiring premium gas is super annoying and not needed. Please retune your engines.
My 2 concerns are the powertrain reliability and fuel efficiency if there’re big differences between the two. Until then I can make decisions for my needs. Hope to have some kind of answers soon by watching your channel and others. Thanks for the video as always.
New turbo i4 hybrid max is a reliable engine. since its based on a very reliable Turbo i4 engine plus combined with proven hybrid technology and turbos . It should be more than fine .this new land cruiser should do 27mpg
What are your thoughts on fuel efficiency vs fuel capacity? In Australia we're only getting the 6cyl petrol with 13.5? L /100km which is pretty bad - especially when coupled with an 80L taml.
David your video influenced me and I watched other videos about the GX. Some videos have said that the new Land Cruiser (the 250 coming to North America) is smaller than the 200 series Land Cruiser and is finally a “mid size.” So, like you, I had pretty much decided to buy a Lexus GX Crosstrail. But now that more specifications are available, there is very little difference in size between the new Land Cruiser and GX and my 2017 200 series LC. The length is about the same, the width is hard to figure because of measurements either with or without mirrors, but the track is an inch wider on the new. The weight is within 200 bounds and that could just be the weight of the back seats. Can you help explain? Have I missed something? The specs show all three, the 200 series, the new LC, and the new GX are all within inches of each other. Thanks.
Great comparison video! The only thing I'll zonk you on is the heights. The GX is showing a 2.5 inch taller height in the Overland trim than the new Land Cruiser and also has more ground clearance. I don't know if this is because of the Overland having larger tires or what.
David, do you have any concerns about the 3.4L TT V6 in the GX550 considering the problems we have been hearing about? I am on a waiting list for a GX Overtrail+ edition and it is in the back of my mind. I enjoyed your review and found it helpful.
Thanks for the assist... Awesome points to make a decision... like you i will go with the Lexus OverTrail, 6Cyl, 10 Speed Trans and fit/finish. simply want a solid engine and transmission... keeping both ride and noise levels smooth and quiet.😎
From what you said. I take you will be happy ether way just depends on budget and taste. I do I find out more about which factories make what models. That was the most interesting thing I learned.

Really appreciate your down-to-earth approach to reviews. You and Car Care Nut!!! This is stuff men really appreciate. Non of this over the top bs spewing from the desperation content class. I appreciate your nuts and bolts review. It was very thorough personally, I think they’re both great I’m gonna go with the GC 550 over trail plus because it’s more luxurious. I also have an engineering background if you have a choice between going with a 20 turbo V6 or a TwinTurbo before hybrid go with the TwinTurbo V6 you’re gonna get 349 hp and it’s the same engine that’s in the Toyota tundra and in the Lexus LX 600 The fact that the Lexus is the only one with the TwinTurbo V6, which mimics the VA makes me go with the Lexus GX 550. You might get slightly better gas with the hybrid Land-cruiser. I don’t want a turbo 4. We haven’t driven it but i prefer the twin turbo v6 Dara GX 550. Also has a 10 speed. Where is the land cruiser has a speedy won’t feel it every day but you’ll feel it when you’re shifting anyone and dry faster on the highway. Keep in mind that the GX5:50 years is premium gas and you can use regular gas with the land cruiser
Excellent review👍…..Just curious if the Land Cruiser comes with electric foldable mirrors??….I would assume so but I wanted to know ….handy in a garage with tighter space…thanks for your assistance…
Does anyone know if the a/c & heat will be able to run off the hybrid battery? (Believe the prius does this and would seem ideal for sleeping with the seats folded.)
Good review David! I was aware of the redesign of the GX for 2023 with the V6 turbo and decided to buy the 2023 GX640 due to the V8 last year. I’m nervous about turbo’s and prefer naturally aspirated engines. I’d be interested in a review by you comparing the GX 2023 vs 2024 models
How did Toyota not put a battery bump on the current RAV4 hybrid with spare in the trunk and the LC with a massive bump? Definitely didn’t think it through
Hi from Alberta! Always look forward to watching when i get your notifications and especially the way you incorporate other videos into your content eg demonstrating E-KDSS, comparing interior, factory workings etc! I really dislike what they did with the look of the side angle/profile view below the tail lights on the GX. Overall I prefer GX exterior and LC interior but really looking forward to see real world images of each model in every colour before I decide. Basically for me it's about looks, lol.
David, great job as always! Do you have a video that speaks to what the 2024 Landcruiser shares with2023 GX460 and what are new features that are different!
It actually does. The LC 1958 does not have the sway bar disconnect as far as I remember. So all US LC are not created with equal offroad capabilities.
Thank you for you opinion! I also like new LC probably with a circle headlight. But I adore GX more! BTW what kind of a seat cover do you use? That looks so nice. Can you give more info about them or link where to buy pls?
Thanks for the comprehensive review. Very informative in all aspects. I personally would want to go for the bigger engine and the 7-seater option. YMMV.
I can’t help but think the winner here is the 5th Gen 4Runner TRD Pro or TRD Off Road…. Naturally Aspirated 6cyl and a tried & tested package. How long will the turbo 4-cyl hybrid last? 300 to 400 thousand miles?? Can’t imagine without major maintenance.
Compare to a 4Runner OR, the GX550 aside from the engine has much longer wheel travel with the e-KDSS than previous GX and 4Runner and the Overtrail comes with 33” tires from factory and most likely will accept 34” and possibly 35” with some mods. How much mods to get 33”-34” tires on a 4Runner?
I have owned LX600 for 18 months. Love it. Placed an order on the new GX overtrail just to have the option of getting one early. It will have to be amazing to convince me to replace the LX.
Awesome analysis, David! Personally we way prefer NA V-8s over small engines w multi turbochargers that are so common these days. We have in-service a wonderful 2004 LC in beautiful shape w 270k miles and no major failures; just normal & expected MX. We plan to do at least 400k; maybe more.
Where do we expect pricing to be on both vehicles? I contemplating buying my wife a used 2022 GX and putting more aggressive wheels/tires until I finish my residency, then trade up for the GX550 Overtrail. But I love that retro Land Cruiser!
The three questions I have about the Land Cruiser are that no reviews that I have seen have addressed are: 1. With the location of the battery in the rear of the vehicle, without much under body shielding, will water fording create a vulnerability? 2. Why doesnt the LC come with a TRD off road option? 3. What is the projected mpg of the LC?
To answer #2, probably because Land Cruiser has never used the TRD tiering system. To answer #3 27mpg which I think instantly makes the LC the better vehicle especially since the GX gets 17 with required premium fuel. The GX is going to start off much more expensive and cost much more to drive throughout its lifetime.

I would be happy with either one. Hope to see and drive both in early 2024.
Do you know the fuel capacity yet for each?
27 vs 17
I’m actually here to make the same comment. Thank you. I’m curious as well. Why premium fuel ?
The older a vehicle is, like a 20 year old LX470 that recommends premium fuel would benefit much more than an owner of a 4 year new lease. As in, the older it gets, the more it makes sense so those items are well kept.
I have 325,000km and 2 timing belt changes and use premium fuel (Costco) all the time! I like it, it’s also better for the environment so take that climate activists.
@@c.k.5480”take that climate activists”… Laughs in V8.
@@MYLIFEISLEGENDARY936. I believe that disclosure on mpg was an accident or inaccurate. I'm thinking it will be in the 23-24mpg range.
@@ALMX5DP no buddy it will do 27 mpg.
@@MYLIFEISLEGENDARY936. based on a now redacted advertisement? Seems a bit tenuous to say that’s a guarantee.
@@ALMX5DP land cruiser will do 27 mpg and lets see
What are your thoughts on fuel efficiency vs fuel capacity?
That was the most interesting thing I learned.
please keep posting about new and upcoming Lexus SUVs thanks for the great Video.
David, what are the ground clearances of the two vehicles?
What car seat cover are you using?
Just look for neoprene universal seat cover on amazon
How about NVH? In the GX, Is there more insulation, acoustic glass, suspension treatments to reduce noise?
Yes. In general.
I get bombarded in my feed non stop with car people and overlander people. Most people try so hard, and it's starting to come off as pretentious and annoying. Really appreciate your down-to-earth approach to reviews. You and Car Care Nut!!!
This is stuff men really appreciate. Non of this over the top bs spewing from the desperation content class. (overlanding scene is also bombarded with this, everyone trying to be "Casey Neistat".
Where did you get the seat cover for your gx?
I appreciate your nuts and bolts review. It was very thorough personally, I think they’re both great I’m gonna go with the GC 550 over trail plus because it’s more luxurious.
I also have an engineering background if you have a choice between going with a 20 turbo V6 or a TwinTurbo before hybrid go with the TwinTurbo V6 you’re gonna get 349 hp and it’s the same engine that’s in the Toyota tundra and in the Lexus LX 600
The fact that the Lexus is the only one with the TwinTurbo V6, which mimics the VA makes me go with the Lexus GX 550. You might get slightly better gas with the hybrid Land-cruiser. I don’t want a turbo 4. We haven’t driven it but i prefer the twin turbo v6
Dara GX 550. Also has a 10 speed. Where is the land cruiser has a speedy won’t feel it every day but you’ll feel it when you’re shifting anyone and dry faster on the highway.
Keep in mind that the GX5:50 years is premium gas and you can use regular gas with the land cruiser
David ~ Tell us about the possible hybrid engine for the GX. What’s it used in now and would you wait for it in the GX?
They are both so sharp! I have never owed either brand and decided on of these is my next vehicle.
No I don't believe that's possible
Good review David! I was aware of the redesign of the GX for 2023 with the V6 turbo and decided to buy the 2023 GX640 due to the V8 last year. I’m nervous about turbo’s and prefer naturally aspirated engines. I’d be interested in a review by you comparing the GX 2023 vs 2024 models
Thinking of a Land Cruiser and modding it with my own Focal sound system and Dynamat for a lot less than Mark Levinson.
Do you know if the Overtrail, or any of the 550’s, will have a larger fuel tank than 21 gallons?
How did Toyota not put a battery bump on the current RAV4 hybrid with spare in the trunk and the LC with a massive bump? Definitely didn’t think it through
That is a very good question. We can ask a similar question about the Hybrid battery location in the Sequoia vs Tundra.
Hello david . Do yo think both of them will have the different sound insulation .?
Yes it's possible that GX will have a bit more...
That was a great 20 point overview Thank you.. 👏👏😁
The Lexus GX Overtrail is the one for me, Hards down.. 👍🙂
Any insights on the current QC hold at the ports for the 2024 LC 250. I ordered a FE back in early March and now it’s stuck in New Jersey.
Any insights on the current QC hold at the ports for the 2024 LC 250?
David, great job as always! Do you have a video that speaks to what the 2024 Landcruiser shares with2023 GX460 and what are new features that are different!
Thank you, fantastic video!! We're going with the overland GX.
I suspect the Landcruiser doesn’t need various off road packages because it’s a Landcruiser. The name speaks for itself. 😊
🤔
🤔
Very nice, professional review. I wish Toyota offered the Prado 250 in more trims like they do in other markets.
Incredible comparison! Easy to understand, straight to the point! New subscriber here! Well done 😃
Will the Lexus GX come with the option of a trailer brake controller from factory?
Is their any differences in seat comfort especially thigh support?
This was very helpful. Now leaning towards a GX Overtrail. The extra towing payload is important to me. Luxury is nice.
Should I cancel my Ineos grenadier order and get one of these?? 🤔
Yes. Unless you feel that they can implement that i6 better than BMW
Toyota track record v/s some unknown.... Easy decision for me
Great review as always! Thanks David.
Any insight on the GX550 fuel tank capacity? The range is my only concern
Thank you so much for these videos. I need your advise : Defender 110 or Lexus GX 2024
I have owned LX600 for 18 months. Love it. Placed an order on the new GX overtrail just to have the option of getting one early. It will have to be amazing to convince me to replace the LX.
A lot different in size. I'm an LX570 guy, and I'd love a GX, but it would be car #2 rather than replace my LX.
Awesome video! Very insightful and well put together. Thanks for sharing all the information regarding these two very exciting machines 😊
I love the spartan look of the new LC 1958. I think I will wait for the new 4runner, and then decide which on I trade my current 4 runner for.
Thanks for the thorough comparison. I did not consider the Lexus until watching your review. (I already have a 2006 Land Cruiser but plan to keep it.)
Where do we expect pricing to be on both vehicles? I contemplating buying my wife a used 2022 GX and putting more aggressive wheels/tires until I finish my residency, then trade up for the GX550 Overtrail. But I love that retro Land Cruiser!
The three questions I have about the Land Cruiser are that no reviews that I have seen have addressed are:
Do you know if the powertrain in the GX is the same as in the LC300 series avail in other countries?
