For our family with little kids and dogs, the GX over trail does not offer roof vents. That was a deal breaker. Comparing apples to apples - the LC offers better air ventilation than the OT. If you choose a GX that is not an OT, you lose off road features. For this reason we opted for the LC and very happy with it. One more item - the “larger” screen on the GX contains the digital buttons that are physical/analog in the LC. The GX does not offer larger net space with this in mind.
Just took delivery of my Overtrail. Love it so far. Silver exterior. Decided after I test drove the LC at the Toyota dealership same day. The power train difference is meaningful in real world driving.
Having seen both of these in person, I feel like they just look better in person. Somehow the angles and dimensions seem distorted in photos and videos. Sounds crazy I know!
I have the new first edition and it’s by far the best suv I have had in last 20 years. Great comfort, great power and great look. I have had many Toyotas and Lexus over the last years and this is the best thus far. Mpg is averaging around 22.5 but has had trios as high as 25. Overall both great rides.
I’m taking a Toyota break. My ‘22 Tacomas transmission shifted so bad, I sold it back to the dealership at 5k miles. Keeping my ‘20 4Runner, and ‘23 GX. Not getting any of their new stuff, nothing but crazy bad stories. Would get the new Frontier if I go back for another mid size truck. Great reviews. Because honestly my current Toyotas are not perfect.
I picked up my GX 3 days ago and I love everything about it. I prefer driving the GX 550 over the 2024 Mercedes GLE 450. I had 2 Mercedes within 1 year that were lemons and Mercedes agreed to take both cars back. A lot of people are knocking Toyota / Lexus but they’re still better in reliability than all the other car companies.
The most important difference was not even mentioned in this video. It is that the Land Cruiser has considerable less cargo space due to the hybrid battery location, and a pitiful weight limit for the cargo area. As much as I’ve dreamed of owning a Land Cruiser, that is a deal breaker for me. I’m going with Lexus 550 Overtrail.
Thanks David, very informative video comparison of both models!! Looking forward to hearing more, maybe adding in additional differences between the Overtrail+ model and both vehicles.
I can appreciate the comparison, where I have been curious about the Land Cruiser's power delivery. I have driven my GX from Utah to Vancouver, and will do the return trip at the end of the month! So far, everything is great! I took it through a favorite trail in Oregon, where I noticed I need a slightly bigger tire and a small lift to address the approach angle, but everything else is great, so far! I really enjoyed your livestream and hope you do another, soon!😊 I always appreciate your insight. Thanks!
Thanks so much! Hey I'm still waiting to have a comparison of your Overtrail vs my Land Cruiser! We should do this while you are still in Vancouver! Let me know..
@@AutomotivePress You were serious about that? Lol I would gladly do that, if we had more time. I start the return trip this morning. Maybe bring your LC to Utah to Moab test it and we can compare there, and us 4x4 owners LOVE videos on new 4x4s taking on Moab, so you will get a lot of views! I can start my own channel. First video "Luna in the GX 550 vs AutomotivePress in the LC" lol I start the return drive this morn (Thursday, August 29th) after meeting family for breakfast at 9am, and want to be in Utah by the 1st of September, so have enough time to see something along the way. Next time my GX will have slightly bigger, much better tires and maybe a very small lift, so it will be no comparing lol However, not sure I would endure that drive again lol Hope to see a livestream soon! I enjoyed that!
@@lunamaria1048 Yes I was serious about that! It would be an epic video and you can definitely start your own Luna channel (is that your name?). I was offered to buy the GX 550 Overtrail but I may wait until next year as I already have so many new models this year... I will definitely do a livestream soon. Keep an eye on the community tab for announcements! Do let me know when you are back in Vancouver though (still don't know how to contact you though, maybe send me a note via email automotivepress@outlook.com please!)
Informative video! The gray GX at timestamp 5:57 shows small mud guards as you described. However, the white GX at timestamp 11:37 to 11:47, and the GX at timestamp 24:25, show no mud guards, the same as the online Lexus literature. The GX needs available mud guards, especially those fitted with rock rails rather than running boards. Perhaps GXs beyond a certain serial number have, or will have mud guards.
I would rather have an FJ Cruiser. Toyota should have never stopped selling it in the US back in 2014 and never stopped making it. I love my 2007 FJ and as much as I hate to say this but if I were buying an off-road vehicle today it would be the INIOS Grenadier. The Grenadier is more modable and just as capable if not more.
While my current daily driver is my '13 RX350, my first Toyota I bought new was my '87 Xtra-Cab Deluxe 4x4 Pickup with the 22R 4-cyl 2/5-speed and is the core to my off-roading roots. That said, between these 2 models, I would select the Land Cruiser. I'll have to wait for one to show up as C.P.O.s in a few years for me to buy one... as my the last time I actually bought a new Toyota was in 2007 and I only buy C.P.O. Toyotas since then...
Not a fair driving comparison because of the huge tire and wheel differences. For owners looking for the smoothest on- pavement ride the Land Cruiser with its standard 18" all season highway tires beats the Lexus because 18" wheels with all season highway tires are not even available on the GX. The Lexus also subjects the owner to more electronic complication and fustration via it's more extensive electronically, instead of manually, actuated controls. I will not purchase either one until I am able to evaluate the upcoming 2025 4Runner. My hunch is I will want a lower trim 4Runner with the non-hybrid turbo 4 cyl and 8 speed automatic because that vehicle will not only cost $12,000 less than the cheapest Land Cruiser, but will also be less complicated and expensive to maintain and troubleshoot.
We decided to screw over anyone not buying a Lexus, what you want normal things like engine covers and hydraulic hood prop that cost us nothing? I’m debating on the GX, Tundra, or since BMW is now reliable going for a $60-70k vehicle that has quality real leather instead of pleather… I was in a 2024 1794 today and was stunned how thin that “leather” was
Real world test I've seen put LC around 23 highway vs. gx 20-21 @75mph. LC does a lot better closer to 60mph. GX is considerably worse for city ofc... take it with a grain of salt though, way too many variables
For fuel cost reduction, Toyota should have engeneer the Land Cruiser and GX optimal compatibility with regular fuel !!! I dislike to pay for a Premium fuel for a truck !!
With both vehicles having the same shaped exterior mirrors, are they exactly the same in terms of features, like folding, heated, blind spot monitoring etc? Also which has better headlights in terms of effectiveness at lighting up the road ahead?
like the GX 550 overtrail base model one can delete the moon roof and no 3rd row , but price is lower than ,until the FE land cruiser are sold out bet none will be built under $70k U.S.
I am not sure why anyone would spend the $$ for either of these to off road and scratch up. Why not get a used 4 runner and keep the GX or LC for fun driving.
Back is ugly on both of them. I really love round headlights on Land Cruiser. 18 inch should be standard on Lexus instead of 20 or at least available as an option. Turbo 4 sucks, in Europe you can buy Land Cruiser with carryover 2.8 Turbo Diesel, which is the optimal set-up for it. I wish they carried over 1GR-FE 4.0 V6. Prices on both of them are insanely high. I will wait for the facelift. Never buy any vehicle in its first year.
The driving aspect of the comparison is absolutely useless. Those are not comparable at all, look at the wheels! I would have preferred an engineer look at those, as the title suggested. This was very very superficial.
Agreed, their new gen vehicles add tremendous complication for fuel mileage that’s only marginally better. The last generation will hold their resale value better than the new ones IMHO
2014 = crybabies say Toyota behind everyone with tech 2024 = crybabies say Toyota too complicated Folks no matter what, they will never satisfy everyone🖕 I for one welcome the changes and am excited about Toyota trying new things, they will get it right in the end.
@@TxRumbler One cannot research the unknown. If you want to be the test mule, go for it. If they could release an engine with one major defect, there are more. Meanwhile most of us with common sense will wait.
@@TxRumblerPlus the engine for the GX550 is built in a different line of production especially for the GX550, nothing to do with the engines production for tundra or Lexus LX600.

Hi David, great review 👍 I love the gx better, but I will drive either one..

@AutomotivePress.. can the acoustic glass of the GX be installed in the Land Cruiser?
I heard the turbo v6 are having issues.(?)

Hey @david I have been told my new LC250 first edition has been built at Aichi prefecture...does that mean it's built at Tahara plant? Thank you
That was great; Thank you.

That's why I chose the LC.
Good comparison.👍
Seeing this makes me start dreaming of the next-gen FJ. Please Toyota, do it for the US market!
I’m assuming the hybrid allows you to run the air conditioning even when the engine is not running. I like that feature on my Prius.
Yes.. you are correct.
David, We will have to wait for the GX Hybrid to see if the ranking changes.
Yes true..
Team LC here 🎉
For fuel cost reduction, Toyota should have engeneer the Land Cruiser and GX optimal compatibility with regular fuel !!! I dislike to pay for a Premium fuel for a truck !!
We need video Comparison overtrail and lc250 off roading
I would go clearly for the Lex.

Best Cars new magazine has the FJ and the mr2 on the front. Could you do a video saying what the new scoops are. Thanks David
Neither has passenger lumbar support. Seems like a big miss to me. Drove the GX last week and realized this issue. FYI
We test-drove a GX - it was bumpy and the interior needs to be fancier.
So what would you choose between the GX550, the Land Cruiser, or your LC500?
In the Jurassic park books the t rex attacked a land cruiser
Waiting for 25 qx80 review
How did the fuel economy compare in the real world?
Hi David, I think u will trade ur land cruiser to GX overtrail + later. 😊
Feel lucky ours was built in Tahara.
Certainly a great difference. 31:24

Toyota has replaced the main bearing cap in all new V6 engines since February 2024.
Why didn't you mention the fuel economy? The Lexus is much worse that the Land Cruiser.
I am not sure why anyone would spend the $$ for either of these to off road and scratch up. Why not get a used 4 runner and keep the GX or LC for fun driving.
I want the 2.5L hybrid in the Lexus. Call me crazy.
The tiny turbo 4 is a big mistake. Also I read the 6 is having same horrible issues as in the Tundra.
having the hybrid motor compensates dramatically. it functions very well.
David love your reviews, but comparing 18s to 22s doesn't tell you much.
The glass windows isn't the same ?
That's the one thing I don't like about the LC.
Got myself a GX460 instead like you & AMD 🎉
