The new Land Cruiser has an actual windowsill armrest, just not the GX. Weird decision.
I would love to see you guys tow the toy hauler with the GX up the IKE. With the new tow capacity this new platform allows people to look at travel trailers in a whole new way
Payload capacity is always going to be the limitation on towing with a truck like this. Yeah it may be rated for 9000 lbs or whatever but if it only has 1200 lbs of payload then you can only tow that if its just you a maybe one passenger. Forget packing up the whole family and all of your belongings. Plus, travel trailers generally have a 12-13% tongue weight which means a 7000 lb trailer will have 900 lbs of tongue and blow through most of the payload.

Now we have to pay above 100.000 USD, but when the new LC 250 arrive in 2025 I have heard increased taxes where you have to buy up to aprox 150.000 USD for the "cheap" 2 seater work truck. You can forche people to buy so called emission free when you have equivalent models in a price range their work are able to pay, but in my head it's frightening that people with ten years with ability to drive in the busline cannot understand that we untill now don't have any emission free 4x4 working horses to cover much needed jobs to make the cociety running, and it's very sad that such behaviour has a much negative effect on creating understanding of the need for lower emissions. Even myself who are working with lowering emissions also notice that I'm growing put off by such misbehaviour. Best Regards Arne G from Norway.
I'm surprised the luxury trim doesn't have at least air suspension in the rear. Our mid-grade GX460 has rear air suspension. As far as sway goes, I think in this case it's more about the short wheelbase on a relatively narrow and tall vehicle. This GX weighs more than my '15 Sierra 1500 crew cab with 6.5' bed. I'll bet I'd get less sway towing that trailer with my truck than with this GX.
Overtrail tows 9k pounds, so no problem. But the width of the trailers is considerably wider than the width of the mirrors. You can’t see! And the mirrors are a funky shape, and there are no extenders made for the model yet. I’m concerned that he would need an extender that’s wider than anything on the market today
Thanks guys, for this video. I'm looking at purchasing either the Land Cruiser or Lexus GX 550 with towing a caravan in mind. It will be a 19ft caravan so I'm glad this video shows the GX towing a 21ft caravan with relative ease. Hopefully with the slightly smaller caravan it will be more level and lessen the sway.
Dunno why Toyota decided to sell the Prado (which this GX is based on) as the "Land Cruiser" whereas the world get the actual LC300 which the LX is based on.
Likely because the 200 series LC only sold a little over 3000 units per year in the USA. The 100 & 200 series grew in size and price (85k in 2001). The new LC 250 series returns to the size of the 60 or 80 series, I hope at some point it will come with an NA version of the V6 in the new Lexus GX.
So, when might these actually arrive at our dealerships? I thought I was hearing January/February, but that obviously didn't happen. It looks like you're right in our neck of the woods... I recognize the Hwy 58 route toward Golden during your towing test.
The Dunlop Grandtrek have been standard tires on the LX for quite a few years now. I haven't been impressed with them, and finally Michelin makes a tire for the LX 21" rim size.
Thanks so much for the towing video. My name is next on a GX550 Overtrail allocation list so it looks like I'm in the hunt. Although the torque and HP blow away my 4Runner I really wanted see some actual trailer towing. Currently I get run over on interstates when towing. How much tongue weight was on the hitch for this drive?
11:31 Mr. Truck makes me laugh 😂 He’s my kind of guy. I feel like this video should be on your car channel, not your truck channel. Keep this just for TRUCKS.
I think I measured 50 mm of rake, so dropping 2 1/4 inches with 1000 lbs tongue weight is pretty good considering the nature of the vehicle. That puts you only slightly off level in a worst case
I think the biggest factor holding this back is the short 112.2 inch wheelbase. That's 6 inches shorter than my Audi Q7's despite the GX550 being rated to tow more. I would expect a lot of sway with longer trailers and while a WDH will help a lot I'd stick to a longer wheelbase, even for my 21 foot long Geo Pro.
Longer wheelbase is good for towing but it's not so great for off-roading. Geo Pros are pretty light, you could easily tow one with a new GX but use a weight distributing anti-sway hitch.
I tow a 24’ 5500 lb trailer. Just bought an LX570 with the same wheelbase as this and took it through 35+ mph winds doing 65-70 mph without even the slightest amount of sway. The crazy part was the self leveling suspension unloaded the wdh bars so they were barely engaged the whole time. Had to go readjust the hitch head angle once I got there. Before that I put probably 2000 miles on my GX460 with the same trailer and that was only a 109” wheelbase.
Very true. I do think this GX550 could handle the Geo Pro fine, just would prefer to keep my Audi. Granted I didn't buy it new, I bought a like-new 2018 Prestige with air suspension and 17.5k miles for $38k. Engineering background not so fast my friend. The old Lexus GX 460 that my neighbor has with a V-8 engine can tow 11,000 pounds my F150 Eco diesel can tow 12,000 pounds unfortunately the Lexus going to the twin turbo V6 lost about 2000 pounds of towing abilities so you can still tow 9000 pounds more than the Chevy Tahoe however fuel efficiency has only gotten up slightly 16 to 17 mpg combined. I get 25 mpg combined 375 HP not 350 on my Larriat f150 and can town12000. You could get the V8 engine and tow 16,000 for the F150 but then you lose on gas too my duty truck gets better gas and I only have to put regular not premium Unfortunately Lexus is getting greedy like the European auto makers they’re charging a premium for the over trail plus and the luxury plus and they charge a premium for upgrades like bark Livingston audio to the two of $2000 if you want to go from an over trail to an over trail plus there’s a $10,000 markup for $70,000 I’d rather get a new lariat for 65,000 you can even get a platinum for 80000 the same priced as anniversary + if you really want the luxury fee l but there is a $150,000 markup. The luxury plus tips at 84000. That is only 6000 less than the base LX. Might as well get the base Lx 600 at least you get 400 hp

Look at that Lexus bounce up and down in the rear with trailer hooked up. That’s not too confidence inspiring, this is why I went with a GMC Sierra 2500HD
😂😂 the 98 percent of buyers won't be towing a camper with these. It is near the max towing to close for comfort, I agree! But this will by far outlive your gm product and as a former HD 2500 owner myself it had soo many Lil bugs quality or lack their of really showed after a few years.

My 2018 GMC Sierra 2500HD has the Duramax/Allison combo. So far has been 100% reliable with no issues whatsoever.
My last two Toyota Tundra’s have not been nearly as reliable. Too many issues with transmission and brakes.
Now my 2020 4R has been bulletproof
The mirrors alone make it a hard pass
7800lbs towing will work for me, 9k would be better. I like this and want one. I do not want that glass roof. Maybe at some point I will find one that fits my spec
did a build and price, 70k for what I want.
Some GX models can tow up to 9096lbs
@@romairoblackstock5100where did you see that? Lexus’ website just shows a max of 8k lbs.
That gx is squatting like its about to fail
Andre just give the damm vehicle to Mr Truck....I want to see him drive the Normal as well as the ike...
Привет из Сызрани от Евгения из Сызрань Лоджистик. 😂
Буду язык учить по вашим роликам.
This does not tow 7800. It tows 6800. Check the website.
Was at my Lexus dealer couple days ago, they said they had 30 new GX 550’s coming in and 600 people on wait list
I'm sure they'll enjoy those markups.
Who is that old guy? It felt like you forgot you were watching pappi today so you had no choice but to take him along with you...
Nice Trailer. 😉
Good locking again!
So this is basically a Landcruiser 300 series which has been out in Australia for nearly 2 years.
No
@@madclone84Yes.
Same motor, same transmission, same TNGA-F chassis, E-KDSS on the Overtrail, etc.
@@Jay-me7gw motor is different. EU includes a 3.3 diesel when NA has a 3.4 v6 turbo
@@madclone84they have both engines in the 300 series over seas. The 300 has a higher HP rating but that is purely due to tuning differences in the engine computer. I think Lexus wanted to differentiate it from the LX600.
@@Jay-me7gw completely different vehicle and upgraded versions off the previous generations, E-KDSS is “new”, the turbo 3.5 v6 is exclusive to Lexus, the chassis is the same as the tundra. The 300 series doesn’t have good reviews so let’s not compare apples to oranges
lexus motor, quite different than the tundra's motor. Much more similar to the LX's "3.5 Liter" with smaller turbos.
15:02 well I think all vehicle have laminated windshield with two layers of glass and plastic in between...........be professional or your creditability may suffer, I now consider all words you say are garbage....
Looking forward to the Ike Gauntlet.
is this made 100% japan?
Engineering background not so fast my friend. The old Lexus GX 460 that my neighbor has with a V-8 engine can tow 11,000 pounds my F150 Eco diesel can tow 12,000 pounds unfortunately the Lexus going to the twin turbo V6 lost about 2000 pounds of towing abilities so you can still tow 9000 pounds more than the Chevy Tahoe however fuel efficiency has only gotten up slightly 16 to 17 mpg combined. I get 25 mpg combined 375 HP not 350 on my Larriat f150 and can town12000.
You could get the V8 engine and tow 16,000 for the F150 but then you lose on gas too my duty truck gets better gas and I only have to put regular not premium
Unfortunately Lexus is getting greedy like the European auto makers they’re charging a premium for the over trail plus and the luxury plus and they charge a premium for upgrades like bark Livingston audio to the two of $2000 if you want to go from an over trail to an over trail plus there’s a $10,000 markup for $70,000 I’d rather get a new lariat for 65,000 you can even get a platinum for 80000 the same priced as anniversary + if you really want the luxury fee l but there is a $150,000 markup. The luxury plus tips at 84000. That is only 6000 less than the base LX. Might as well get the base Lx 600 at least you get 400 hp
Don't forget the tow mirrors
