Tommy, By the time you go to test drive the new Land Cruiser, we expect you to be fluent in Japanese thus eliminating the need for a translator. 😉 I am a bit surprised you did not ask about the choice of tailgate. Like most serious off road SUVs, the old Prado/GX design had the option of a tailgate mounted spare. When chosen this allowed increased fuel capacity of nearly FORTY gallons! I imagine the engineers really struggled with the decision to drop this feature. 🤔
Great interview, wonderfully engaged translator. Interesting and informative. I am still a bit concerned about fuel economy. Did you get a sense of when the hybrid is coming and what that will "cost " in terms of towing performance.
Outstanding interview Tommy, very thoughtful questions which help those us of us (who are patiently awaiting this vehicle's arrival in dealerships) to gain a better understanding of what kind of thought, intent, and attention to detail went into the development of this GX. Have a great day, God Bless.
Tommy great interview man you held your own! Great looking rig... I don't speak Japanese but I can tell he was proud of the design after Tommy asked ! 👍👌
“i’m sorry could you state your name again?" lol when the gentleman was speaking Japanese, it cracked me up to see the interviewer, nodding his head as if he could understand him.
This was a fantastic interview from the questions to the answers from the Chief Engineer and translator. I've never been big on Lexus or Toyota products but this GX has peaked my interest. Well done TFL Team!
People assuming Tommy nodding his head as if he’s understands Japanese are clueless-this is called Active Listening, interview techniques employed in the psych community. He did very well.
Nice and interesting interview. I did have to chuckle at you Tommy nodding your head when the engineer was speaking, like you had a clue what he was saying.😁
Great interview! Answered a lot of my questions and then some! The Chief Engineer seemed very confident answering the questions about the design so you know the GX550 is going to be a really good.
First of all, great interview....very detailed. You covered all the bases. And that interpreter is pretty high level. He is probably a permanent Toyota corporate fixture. With all of the tech speak that he has to process from the Chief Engineer, he could probably answer most of your questions by himself.
Great vid. Lots of take aways for sure. Glad to hear him say the GX550 and the LC250 is fundamentally the same except for front and rear overhangs and some cross members.
While I like the MDX Type-S, I’m glad I waited on my next purchase cuz I love this new design. I know after I see it in person, I’m gonna get this GX for sure. Thanks for the interview.
Very well put questions for the interview. It’s not every day someone gets to interview Koji Tsukasaki, his insight clears a lot of fog on the “why’s” and “how’s” of these trucks designs/functions.
This is why american auto companies can't compete with Japan they think of everything before they put it into production, not saying they don't break but they do stand behind what they build.
Great interview! I love how he mentions every other off-road Toyota product is a reference, while the GX (Prado) is the real thing, the pure off-roader.
Tommy I.have watched you grow fro. Your dad's original TFL. Way to go 👍🏼. Been to Japan a couple times myself & not understand the dialect myself, it's impressive to see yoy.had forethought in your questions despite the engineers answers. Overall, spot on the questions that we as American consumers might have on what we might want to know between "Land Cruiser" & Lexus "GX 550". Appreciate the video 👍🏼
Tommy! big time interview my man, cool as a cucumber. Also I don't think I've been this excited about a new car since the Grenadier was announced. I feel like Ineos sparked something in the industry - Toyota / Lexus in particular is coming out with some really pure vehicles that go back to their roots. Making the new land cruiser the way it is (more rugged and affordable) is downright refreshing to me. I came dangerously close to buying a grenadier, and I still might have one in my future. But this new GX has me drooling. Thanks for the content!
Great interview. I do wish however you would have asked him the reasons why they chose not to offer a 3 row option in the Overtrail trims, and if they might offer that option in the future.
Excellent interview Tommy! I was very interested to hear everything about the new GX for the chief engineer. You asked the best questions too. Lots of them are what I would’ve asked him too. Especially about the big change in powertrain. He did amazing on the design. I love how this new GX looks. I personally think the interior is a little too bland for me but the exterior design makes up for some of it. Great interview!
Thanks for having a translator Tommy you can hear his pride and conviction when he speaks even though I don’t understand a word his body language says drive it I know you are going to love it lol
Hey Tommy, love your work, if the GX has the same engine than the LX, weigh less and has a better drag coefficient, what’s driving the higher mileage ?? Final drive ratio ?
Tommy, this is a thoughtful interview. Great job. (Rheboy thing that made me raise my eyebrows a bit was when you said “this is the most capable Lexus ever!” Come now, do you not remember the Lexus version of the 80 Series LC???
Really nice interview. I would have loved to hear the reasoning behind only keeping ONE true off roader GX 550 in the Overtrail. Certainly the Premium and luxury trims do NOT seem to be true off roaders. Another question would be why the only one with KDSS is the Overtrail trim, additionally why did they just cut and paste the center stacks, I guess to save even more money? The engineer stated that fuel economy was part of the redesign, really 1 mile difference between GX 460 and GX 550? The exterior is an absolute killer design, I don't know how you can possibly improve on that!!! I also would have loved to hear why no 3rd row in the Overtrail, that makes it an absolute no go for many people.
The hype for this vehicle has been high. The delivery times are going to be even higher - according to my local dealer (9-12 months for the Overtrail).
I’ve been driving Toyota vehicles starting back to the day I received my drivers license. Today I owe 3 toyota vehicles. So now I’m struggling between the new 2024 toyota Land Cruiser and the Lexus GX 550 . Both are dream vehicles!
That interpreter was outstanding! Judging by his excellent contextual awareness and command of technical terminology, he is in-house interpreter from Toyota corporate HQ.
The only thing I ain't diggin' with the new GX are the colors. WIsh Lexus would give us some more bright and vibrant ones instead of these earth tones. I guess I'll have to suffice with a black or silver one.
Good stuff Tommy. Would of like a bit more driveline questions as far as T-Case and Diff specs. Strengths etc.. Never been a huge Toyota/Lexus fan. Being a long time Mechanic, I always respected the reliability. Just not the curb appeal. This has changed significantly. The wife and I will have a Overtrail Plus in Incognito 🎉
I wish you would have asked about after market front and read bumpers - specifically, how will you add a winch and tire carrier without remove sensors or voiding warranty. Also, along the same lines, he mentioned that the suspension/air bags were removed to allow customers to customize their suspension more, but does this void warranty? Does doing any modifications void warranty?? Haha..
Why is the front overhang so large on Toyota hilux and this. Looks almost like front wheel drive. Only complaint I have is dash to axle ratio on these trucks
Awesome interview Tommy. Good job!
Glad you enjoyed it!
Great interview. Solid questions. Always interesting to hear from chief engineer
Just a damn good interview Tommy. Informative, concise, and comprehensive!

We don't care
I have to commend Tommy for asking awesome questions without missing a beat. Great video! 👍

This interview is so cool. Lexus hit it out of the park with this SUV
What perfection this thing is.
“i’m sorry could you state your name again?" lol when the gentleman was speaking Japanese, it cracked me up to see the interviewer, nodding his head as if he could understand him.

Excellent interview Tommy, makes me want this vehicle even more !!! Overtrail +❤
Great interview! Love the fact that we can listen to the engineer’s native language!
@TFLnow: that was great! Wish we had an hour of that guy giving us an in depth look into the new GX. Very insightful. Thanks Tommy.
As a non Japanese speaking, that was a heck of a translation. Thank you so much. I’m putting my GX550 order now.
Nice and interesting interview. I did have to chuckle at you Tommy nodding your head when the engineer was speaking, like you had a clue what he was saying.😁
I am in love with this GX 550 Overtrail. I can’t wait to get one.
Best gx550 video so far
Great interview! Answered a lot of my questions and then some! The Chief Engineer seemed very confident answering the questions about the design so you know the GX550 is going to be a really good.
Fantastic interview and great insights.
Thanks for listening
Asked just about every question I was curious about. Fantastic interview, thank you!
Spot on questions Tommy, congrats my friend, and thanks to the team Lexus they are very nice people too.

Tommy you’re doing such a great job they’re going to have to give you your own channel. 👍🏻

Awesome awesome video, thanks Tommy & team!
When it will be available?
Great Questions Tommy. You nailed it.
Awesome, rare insight from Lexus

Tommy, you’ve become a great automotive journalist. You’re excellent at interviewing.
This was an excellent interview, very precise and poignant questions. Great job.
Nailed it !!! Asked all the right questions! Well done!!!
A reliable Defender finally
In my opinion this probably to the best looking vehicle lexus ever made. Excellent interview.
What a great interview.
Great interview and very unique video that can’t be found anywhere else

The new GX is awesome, I can’t wait to get mine as soon as possible

Awesome interview 👍👍Japanese engineering reliable durable 👍👍😊
Great questions! You're good Tommy!
Real Japanese engineer and a truly Japanese built vehicle.
What an amazing interview. Tommy, you knocked it out of the park.
Solid interview Tom. Great work. Thank you.
Thanks Tommy for this serious engineering questions.
This is such a great vehicle. I can't wait to get one
Well done Tommy! Impressive questions and video. Good to see you for a minute at the event.
Thanks dude! Great seeing you too!

Great job Tommy! What an awesome opportunity to speak to their chief engineer! Very nice!
Excellent interview and interesting questions
Thank you
Great interview Tommy. Can't wait to see one lifted w/35s.
Great interview Tommy! 👍🏻
Tommy asking the tough questions! Excellent video
Great interview. I do wish however you would have asked him the reasons why they chose not to offer a 3 row option in the Overtrail trims, and if they might offer that option in the future.
Seeing the Japanese engineering chief on the video is a great interview. It is great to understand both languages!

Most informative/interesting video about the new GX so far!

Great interview! 10:13 👍🏼👍🏼👍🏼👍🏼
Fantastic, great interview!
I am a little jealous, would love an opportunity to meet the chief engineer of the GX.
Tommy, this is a thoughtful interview. Great job.
(Rheboy thing that made me raise my eyebrows a bit was when you said “this is the most capable Lexus ever!” Come now, do you not remember the Lexus version of the 80 Series LC???
My next vehicle. Another example of excellent Japanese engineering.
Good looking vehicle
Aside from car, this is professional level interviewer, interpretation, and interesting topic! 🎉
Excellent interview, especially being through an interpreter. Now- embargo lifted yesterday. Where's the TFL driving review?
Great questions. Is the the over trail?
Great interview and very informative. Which part of Texas the interview took place?
Very awesome these Japanese, the new LEXUS GX is very nice simple and reliable
Tommy, yes it’s the same engine as my former 2018 LS500 F-Sport 6 cylinder turbo. The engineer responded with LX info.
Really nice interview. I would have loved to hear the reasoning behind only keeping ONE true off roader GX 550 in the Overtrail. Certainly the Premium and luxury trims do NOT seem to be true off roaders. The no 3rd row option makes me scratch my head too?? Why not offer it for people who want it?
Why is this thing more beautiful than the LX600? Someone explain!
Different styles
Good job Tommy
TAAMI is killing it lately!
any update on all the toyota/lexus 3.4 that are dying on crank bearing?
The hype for this vehicle has been high. The delivery times are going to be even higher - according to my local dealer (9-12 months for the Overtrail).
I’ve been driving Toyota vehicles starting back to the day I received my drivers license. Today I owe 3 toyota vehicles. So now I’m struggling between the new 2024 toyota Land Cruiser and the Lexus GX 550 . Both are dream vehicles!
Wow!
Absolutely!! We should have at least a dozen paint options. Even 12 is a low figure compared to historical standards.
These should sell.
They better have a good supply of windscreens, steep angled windscreens are more prone to cracks from stones etc.
Like n subscribe.
Great interview...... getting my GX 👍💪💰
Good video

wish you asked why the overtrail+ doesn't come with a panoramic roof?
I’m glad that the Japanese are behind the engineering of this absolute beast! I don’t trust anyone else to make a more reliable vehicle.
Why is the front overhang so large on Toyota hilux and this. Looks almost like front wheel drive. Only complaint I have is dash to axle ratio on these trucks
Tommy shaking his head as if he understands what the Cheif engineer is saying! 😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂
