Our 2001 Isuzu Trooper also has great 4WD mechanics and visibility, a split rear door with full size spare, and 6-cyl with terrible fuel economy. Solid as a tank and terrific reliability over 20 years. Maybe this is what you should compare to the Ineos 🤠

Before seeing more information about the two vehicles, I would have said the Grenadier was my pick. Now that I have more information, I'm leaning heavily towards the GX550 in the Overtrail trim.
It's easy to forget the importance of on-road refinement shopping overland type vehicles, but the reality is, most routes are 80% or more on-road in North America. The GX550 is heads and tales better on-road while retaining 90%+ of the Grenadier's offroad chops. It's a better balance of the core considerations. Tack on Toyota's history in this market space, and the decision becomes clear.

I own a Grenadier and a 2017 LR Discovery. The Grenadier simply drives different. I wouldn't hesitate to own it because of road manners. I love how it drives. Extremely planted feeling and less body roll.

I pre-ordered and took delivery; I traded in my Everglades, which I only had for 3 months, and my GX460 owner prior. It was a tough choice because I know it's a crap shoot with Ineos. But driving it felt different, and I know I would regret it if I didn't get one if I saw one on the road.

Even though they are priced the same, the Grenadier comes from the factory ready for offroading. You don't have to spend extra $$ after buying the vehicle to get it ready for overlanding like you would on the GX (rock sliders, steel bumper, etc). I think both vehicles will be a hit in their own target markets. Lastly i would say that if I drove more than 15,000 miles a year then I would get the GX, if I drove less than 15k the Ineos for me.

    • @nothingtoseaheardammit

You can get sliders for the GX installed as a dealer option - just like the Ineos. The only offroad options really that the Ineos offers that the GX doesn't is a front locker and a winch - the latter of which I only really consider required equipment.

I'm with Tommy. GX overtrail is clearly a better value, it's going to be way more comfortable, probably way more reliable. But the Grenadier is just cooler, I imagine getting behind wheel feels like going on Safari every single time, even if you're just heading to pick up a pizza.

I am really rooting for the Grenadier to be a success in the US. There are so many more positives than negatives for this 4x4, and I'm hopeful that the engineers will make some of the recommended enhancements. Most are minor, but a major one is the steering radius. I just can't envision the Grenadier to be suited for trail switchbacks or tighter trails that a Wrangler, FJ Cruiser/GX, or Bronco would explore.

I have a deposit down for a GX 550 Overtrail and nothing I saw here has changed my mind. These two vehicles weigh about the same and I think the Ineos is going to feel underpowered. Especially once you put 35 or 37 inch tires on. While I do like the old school look of the Ineos, the Lexus style and elegance really speaks to me. You didn't compare the right GX (I know its not your fault). The new GX blows the Ineos out of the water when it comes to overall capabilities and value. The interior of the GX is light years ahead of the Grenadier. It drives much better on road. Offroad, the overtrail will do just as well if not better than the Ineos AND the best part is that the Overtrail can be had for $10k less than what the Ineos is. The only thing missing from the GX is the front locker which, lets admit it, most people don't need. The GX can tow more too. Unless you like the looks of the grenadier, there's just no reason to go with it versus the GX.

The base IG and the GX Overtrail are priced virtually identically at about $72k. But that price doesn’t get you either front or rear locker on the IG. You do get the rear locker in the GX Overtrail. Getting the IG Trialmaster takes you to $80K, which includes the front and rear lockers. Of course additional luxury accessories can get you to the same price in the GX. The IG can be spec’d from the factory with greater capabilities. So if off roading is super important then the IG is the choice. If some off roading is what you need, the GX is probably the prudent choice. Remember the GX is essentially a Landcruiser and that ain’t bad after all.

For turning around in a hung up place you really need a good approach or departure at least so you can at least get the front end or the rear end up on something so that you can turn around. With a long wheelbase like that you really need one of those to be pretty good.

@@stevegreen101 Got proof of that? Or just more conjecture?
LOL. Really.. "Spare Wheel" . Oh except the IG comes with 5 full size wheels (4 + matching spare). The bolt pattern is the same as any recent 4x4 Benz Van. They are literally nearly giving them away in the "Lifestyle" circles.
Spare key is expensive if you go through ANY dealer. The actual FOB $ is pittance,. it's being able to clone and program the new FOB that is of issue.
The lights, are not proprietary, so no reason to be paying much over retail.

I've had my Grenadier for a few months now and I cannot imagine driving any other vehicle. Long distance road tripping in it has never been more exciting. While the Lexus is nice, nothing comes close to the feeling you get driving a Grenadier. To the folks that say the Grenadier isn't luxury, tell that to every single person that comes up to me and asks if I paid $140,000k.

Very capable and reliable (although Ineos is still an unknown) 4x4 vehicles suit a niche market in terms of the consumers who will actually make use of the 4x4 capabilities. In my opinion, when the lack of luxuries are considered a negative for such a vehicles, the niche market becomes a niche within a niche. Thanks for sharing. Cheers

The Ford Ranger has a longer wheelbase yet three feet less turning circle. That’s a consequence of the Grenadier having an antiquated tractor beam axle with outboard double universal joints, which limits it to around sixty degrees of lock both ways. Their choice of live axle is also responsible for it having a recirculating ball power assisted steering box which just doesn’t compare with the latest electric power rack and pinion steering which does away with steering hydraulics including a reservoir and pump.

Not that it will be cheap, however I would choose the Land Cruiser or 6th gen 4Runner over either of these. The money you save could be used for upgrades (if needed). For something to rival the Ineos off-road the Bronco or Wrangler come to mind. For cost, off-roadiness and reliability our old lifted 4Runner still rocks.

The Grenadier is built like it should be this rockcrawling, trailbashing brute, but it needs a number of mods to be that. As they are currently coming from the factory, they really are not that much more capable than the GX Overtrail. And they are more expensive with less luxury. While the GX will actually be more comfortable and actually better at the lighter duty offroading. So for a lighter duty offroading and overlanding kinda rig, I think I’d go GX Overtrail. I love the look of the Grenadier and man does it appeal to me more on the surface, but when you take a deep dive is where it comes up short for being able to do what its design suggests. If the aftermarket gets going and gives us the mod kits to make that Grenadier as capable as a body on frame, front and rear solid axle, selectable Locking center and front and rear differential vehicle should be, then the Grenadier would be my pick to build up for harder stuff.

The Toyota 76 Series GLX Wagon in 2.8l auto is A$ 83,900 or US $ 55,400 roughly 2/3 the price of a Grenadier. To my mind the 76 is more of a comparable replacement to a Land Rover Defender. Had the Defender been made today it would probably be in a similar price range.
The Grenadier in RHD also has a massive intrusion where the driver would rest their left foot and this makes it a non starter for me.
