Small Diesel-Powered Log Splitter fixing it with 168F Diesel Small Engine Re-Power

- This small diesel engine is not ready for real world use out of the box. It needs a full teardown, inspection, and proper re-assembly as well as a couple of easy mods to make it work worthy. Without prepping I would be surprised to get 100hrs out of one because of poor assembly throughout.

-168F Diesel Engine. Actual Used
It may arrive differently than the image on the add, this is what I purchased amzn.to/426LQSw
T-Rex Tape amzn.to/3ls69p7
10mm Isolator Engine Mounts amzn.to/3plC0sO
Hardline Vibration Tach amzn.to/3u3WQmO
I am putting this series together in a simple detailed fashion hopefully even an inexperienced mechanic can prep one of these simple engines for daily use.
Follow my instructions and recommendations at your own risk.
Thanks for watching. Авто/Мото
3M VHB tape is the original version of that trex tape, I would use 3M adhesion promoter (primer) for something like this too.
Came here to hear the engine and not disco music.
I did same thing a year ago but the bigger single cylinder diesel man I tell you I go through a lot less fuel now
I haven't put a lot of hours on this thing yet but so far it is obvious this thing really sips fuel!
My dad bought a Chinese tiller with very similar engine (the same model number but a different manufacturer) in 2016~ish. It's still running great and still on its first oil fill!. Ours is rated at 9 hp.
Better change the oil soon or you won't have it much longer.
That's correct on he had better change the oil - I generally run air-cooled engines an hour with out a load then change the oil -
The first change is full of metal - I run it a second time for an hour and change the oil again -
On the third time I put a light load on it then change the oil -
I use synthetic oil and I take a large funnel and put toilet paper in the hole and let the oil filter through the toilet paper and reuse the oil -
In many over the road trucks they no longer change oil they just filter it. -
They use grade 4 synthetic oil - worked in the offshore oilfields for yrs - there were many companies that did not change oil - as the engine uses oil the make up oil is the new oil needed - a locomotive can have run 30 yrs and the oil has never been change - I've worked on engines that had been running gas compressors for 80 yrs or more that have no recorded oil changes - just the filters are changed -
What thread size/length were the mounting bolts for the pump? Metric I'm assuming.
I am rebuilding mine just like you showed me. How is yours running?
I tightened the connecting rod bolts to 15 ft lbs, like you suggested. A stock predator rod is 9 ft lbs. I hope that I didn't over torque anything.
I cranked the screw down. 2800 seems a little fast.
I have 3 of those 168F engines I'm empresses on there performance -
What are you using for the output shaft drive pully/ sprocket/ clutch?? Its 20mm right? 👍
@@dennymcelhaney8652 mine have pulleys on the shafts the shaft size is 20 mm I ordered the pulleys from Allied Beating - the pulleys they had were the bushing type pulleys - hope that helps -
Also you will loose about a half horse power via belt or sprocket transmitting - another is the max RPMs is 3100 RPMs - but compared to the 3600 rpm engines the will burn very low grade fuel -
The factory recommends 2600 RPMs
@@dennymcelhaney8652 mine have A belt pulleys on them the shaft is 20 mm - I ordered my pulleys from Allied bearing - they only had bushing pulleys for 20;mm shafts -
You can bring the engine to machine shop and have a 3/4:inch bore. To 20 mm
You did the same thing I'm thinking about doing. So glad I found your video. Is it still working good for you?
So far works great, make sure you have some starting fluid on hand for Temps below freezing in ambient air temp. Only have 3 hrs or so on it so far.
You can heat the head with a torch if needed for cold starts - as far as that goes if it's a manual start it can be hard to pull start when it's real cold so I heat the block up with a torch -
Most compression start Diesel's are hard to start at below 32° f ether or a torch helps a lot in cold weather
I plan to put a 4.5 hp Lombardini diesel on the same splitter that you have. What size pump did you install? Would you recommend using the same pump if you were to do it again?
really hard to know. This is actually a 30-40 plus year old 3 point log splitter I welded up a tank and trailer axle on to it about 20 years ago. Bought a log splitter pump I cant remember gpm. The little diesel performs well so far. Use starting fluid under 32 degrees unless you want to cuss.
I have the same engine, mine’s a Lombardini 6LD260, those engines will run longer than any other cheaper diesel, even a Yanmar. My Lombardini has a full-size remote mount automotive oil filter. It was from a roadside arrow board junked by penndot (PA dept of transportation) bought the engine for only $45 😂
@@_..-.._..-.._ My engine is also a 6LD260 from a arrow board. Its rather noisy and rough as compared to my 3 cylinder Kubota. It only has 600 hours on it so it should last a lifetime. I haven't had an opportunity yet to install it on a wood splitter. Please let me know what pump you will use and how well it works for you. Thanks.
Is the diesel still doing its job ?

Fuel filter is ass-about-face!
What's with the crappy music?
