  • After taking the Cobb 'Stage 3' Ecoboost Mustang on the track, we thought it would be a good idea to find an empty canyon road and see how it does in the real world. COBB's Ian Armstrong rides along to give some insight on how they tune the Ecoboost Mustang.

    Considering the almost 20k price difference between the Ecoboost Mustang and the Mustang GT I would say the Ecoboost is a pretty decent choice.
    For less than 20k you can have as much power as the GT but have less weight....not a bad end result in my opinion.

    The access port is amazing. It totally transformed my turbo mustang. Five different power maps that you can scroll through while driving down the street. You can have one for 93 octane another for race gas another for ethanol and economy mode etc. Flatfoot shifting for manual transmissions, launch control, burnout mode, Datalogging capabilities, real-time gauge monitoring. It really is the best all-around tuning device out there.

    • @anthonygonzalez9422

      +1compaqedr8 Depends on the fuel and mods. On 93 octane 12s is very doable. On a race blend like E30, E85 or Meth there are close to a dozen Ecoboosts in the 11s on the stock turbo.

    I can't wait for someone to fully build a stage 5 ecoboost. Stage 5 internals, big turbo, bolt ons, ECU, suspension, full weight reduction, carbon fiber hood, ect.. I'd love to see the full potential of the turbo Four Mustang and the Camaro also.

    Great video again! You guys both hit on all the great points of the ecoboost mustang. Awesome low-end and mid-range power for fun daily driving, while still getting better fuel economy than the GT, paying less for insurance and saving ~6k on msrp. Like you said Matt, a great "starter" Mustang. The only drawback for me is the sound. The turbo sounds are cool but the V8 will always sound better in my opinion. Regardless, I still love mine.

    I had a rental ecoboost mustang for a week in southern california. I took it on some canyon and mountain roads and I'm really impressed. It felt so much lighter and well made compared to the 09 GT I've driven before. I'm sure with these mods its a blast to drive.

    Lime Creek is a hell of a road. I'm glad you got to experience it. I live about 10 minutes from there, so I take my Focus ST on it several times a year. You should take the long drive out to the 3 sisters in the hill country. Those roads are as good as any. Out there you can drive on twisty canyon roads for 2-3 hours straight, with only minor breaks.

  • @JoshuaC0rbit
    @JoshuaC0rbit 8 лет назад +5

    I'm glad this new motor is bringing in buyers that probably would have not considered it but I really don't get the appeal over the 3.7 v6. mine was making 290 + to the wheel with just basic bolt ons and tune and now is well over 400 with a ProCharger. That's all on 8 pounds of boost and there's still room to go. I don't think you'll be getting those kind of numbers out of bed four cylinder without a turbo upgrade so it would probably end up costing just as much. Also not to brag but I still get 32mpg at 80 miles per hour on the highway.

    • @ccoghill23
      @ccoghill23 8 лет назад +5

      +Joshua C because the ecoboost is forged from factory, turbo will make more tq than your procharger, priced the same but money spent equally on both the ecoboost will be quicker and a more well balanced car... there are plenty of good reasons

    • @serenityinsilence
      @serenityinsilence 5 лет назад

      There is a turbocharged 3.7 in Houston putting down 550whp. It's an s197 mustang and not the new s550 though. I didn't see why Ford cut the v6 mustang since they still make v6 trucks. It used the same motor as the basic v6 in the f150. Seems like a waste to not offer that in the more budget market.

    I was thinking a few weeks ago why the hell I have never seen a launch control system that's always active and you just need to floor it in 1st gear while standing. Why it needs to be so weirdly complicated? But these guys did it! The first logical way of integrating a launch control system. Thumbs up for Cobb!

    Just a heads up alot of stage 3 cobb tuned ecoboosts are getting blown motors. If you're lucky and have a cool dealership like one near me who just covered 2 cobb 3 tuned blown engines. They just require you to bring it back to factory stock to pass fords initial inspection. Disclaimer! Note that this isn't the case everywhere and dealerships will tell you anything for a sale and services, so you have to go by their word, which usually isn't worth much so you better know them before relying on their word.

    • @jo23bulls
      @jo23bulls 5 лет назад +1

      Good to know. Is there a reason why they're blowing up? I have an ecoboost and was considering cobb.

    • @Dante_S550_Turbo
      @Dante_S550_Turbo 5 лет назад +1

      it has to do with the exhaust port shared by cylinders 2&3. It's restrictive and under high boost it can cause exhaust reversion where the pressure builds up too much forcing the exhaust gasses back into the combustion chamber causing detonation. The weakest link fails, sometimes a rod. Best case scenario it just lifts the head off the block and you'll need a new head gasket & head bolts, preferably studs. Sadly the exhaust manifold is integrated into the head of the 2.3L so a simple aftermarket header is not an option. The next best thing if you don't want to take the head off to port & polish the 2&3 exhaust port is to got with a turbo upgrade with a custom exhaust flange that is more open, The stock one & the turbo both share the same shape & size of the exhaust port for 2&3 further increasing the restriction. That won't make exhaust inversion impossible, at least it hasn't been thoroughly tested to prove it can prevent it. These cars also let some exhaust gases back in through the exhaust valve eliminating the use of an egr valve, that may also be the introductory point for the exhaust reversion.

    it is my understanding that direct injection engines in general are best at the mid-range of the rpm, and are not good at the top end due to the high pressure fuel pumps not being able to provide enough fuel at the top end. It is hard to make a direct injection engine perform well (with respect to the mid range) over 5500 rpm...

      +xxFallenKnight Unless it's a Ferrari, a Bugatti or a Manual Porsche, a car is not an investment..
      I have an EBM and I only got it because I could not find a good rate on insurance for a GT.. The prices I was quoted was more than the car note so F that.. otherwise I would get a GT in a heart beat. I also thought the GT would swallow too much gas but with the way I drive this EB I'm getting about 13mpg in the city which is almost half of what I expected. On the highway tho it gets 36mpg easy all day cruising at 80mph.. unfortunately I barely drive on the highway as I live in a big city.

    • @Dolby109

      +chris pinks Why not just the GT? V6 turbo's don't usually sound all that great as the GTR, and ATS-V serve to prove. A TwinTurbo V6 would likely cost as much to produce as the V8 does, and not offer much if any benefit over the V8 (aside from gas mileage possibly), so I just don't see it happening on the Mustang.

    Not all EcoBoost Mustangs put sound into the speakers. You have to have a premium, the base does not do the imposed sound. Reason being is the difference in stereo.
    My Ecoboost Mustang is not a premium, so no piped in sound.

    My dilemma is that I don't know whether to get a Premium Ecoboost or a GT, First off Im 18 so the insurance will vary, as of now it is 250, which isn't a problem for me to pay now, but both cars are nearly the same amount for the options I want on both

    • @huntertobias2166

    Some idiots said that Ford was "risking controversy" by ditching the V6 for the 2.3L Ecoboost 4 cylinder. The writers of this video are car gals and guys. Ditching the unloved and with no aftermarket support 300 HP/270 TQ V6 for the 310 HP/320 TQ turbo 4 cylinder Ecoboost . Wasn't controversial at all. It was a no brainer that both the bean counters and the car guys at Ford could agree on. Now ALL Mustangs are NOW in fact "performance cars" whatever the trim level or engine option. Being that the Ecoboot has an MSRP of $26,400 within the budget of young carbuyer/enthusiasts and can be easily tuned up to 500 HP with a change of the turbocharger.

    • @Dolby109
      @Dolby109 8 лет назад

      +lrnlrn Given the weight of the Ecoboost I'm more think the FRS/BRZ is more of a spiritual successor to the S-chassis, esp in America where e never got a turbo.
      It would still be great if Nissan made an S16...but they have been too cautious as of late.

    • @lrnlrn
      @lrnlrn 8 лет назад +2

      +Adam S (Dolby109) I see what your saying but the gt86 is the trueno's successor. The Matt said this is the only rwd 4 cylinder turbo you can buy new now.

    • @ccoghill23
      @ccoghill23 8 лет назад +1

      +Adam S (Dolby109) incorrect.... 240 was a true 2+2 car. with all the safety things it would need I would bet the weight would increase. including all the new tech and dash components. the weight is only a difference of 500 pounds I believe? 2800 for curb weight of 240?

    • @kanaric
      @kanaric 8 лет назад +2

      +lrnlrn G86 is that cars successor in name only. Anyone who has driven the car and the 240sx knows they are far more similar. Size is even similar.
      Nobody makes a AE86 successor. Closest thing in weight is the Miata maybe.
      This Mustang is more like a Supra. Almost the same power to weight and size of vehicle.

    I don't understand why ford put the factory redlines on the ecoboost engines so high. All the power falls off and if you let an automatic shift itself it just stays in that high rpm fall off power. They should have just tuned it to shift earlier in the torque range

    What I want to know is how these upgrades affect the Warranty. Obviously the cat-back, intake and intercooler shouldn't have much of an effect.
    Does Ford care about a car having a downpipe? Do they care about Cobb tunes?

    • @TheSmokingTire
      @TheSmokingTire  8 лет назад +11

      +Adam S (Dolby109) Ford cares about modifications to they extent that they affect the part being claimed under warranty. If you blow the engine and it has a tune on it, they are going to take that into consideration with your claim. But if your warranty claim has nothing to do with the part that's been modified, it doesn't matter at all. Cobb does offer warranties on their products (details on their web site)
