    Absolutely a great video! Thank you for the kind words sir. I'm really blessed to have DV as a friend and mentor. Your Dyno results on hot lapping the Ecoboost is a direct comparison of what we witnessed at the Dragstrip. Big power loss!

    Greg, - my totally unbiased comment here is - really great stuff!!
    Now aside from that I feel you handled the intercooler/heat soak/inadequacy situation very well.
    Next Ecoboost I am going to show a clip and heavily reference that subject as you have dealt with it.
    Great working with you.

    As an old (age 79) armchair racer in both road and drag strip environments (strictly amateur), I was especially pleased to see you make the distinction(s) between the V8 and 4-cylinder Mustangs in terms of drag strip performance versus track performance. While I did reasonably well at the drag strip half a century ago, I always enjoyed a road race more, and if I were a customer (I'm not), I'd be more interested in mods that would improve road and track performance over mods directed more heavily toward the drag strip. Just personal opinion.

      The ecoboost’s when set up right are very fast at the drag strip, I’d say I have $3,000 in mine and my personal best so far has been a 12.02 @109mph. Overall less than $20,000!

      Nobody else has asked about it. There is a whole long story there, but yes, it's a supercharged Alfa Romeo Spider packing a Lysholm design positive displacement blower with about 10 pounds of boost and no intercooler. It has more power than a same year Porsche 911, so by 1985 standards it's quite fast. One of the guys who works for me (Alexander) has talked me into resurrecting the car and is now trying to talk me into developing several versions of the supercharger kit as well as the engine management system its using.

    One of my favorite rentals. Knowing you guys do products for this car may sway me towards getting one of these instead of a CLA45. Stainless will "reject" heat very well even compared to silicone, however it's going to "reject" heat from the material both out and into the the intake air.

    • @GregsAirplanesandAutomobiles

      Thanks, in regards to stainless, it's not only the materiel's coefficient of thermal conductivity, it's how thick it is. You can't have a stainless intake that's made from very thick metal or it would be too heavy. Eurocompulsion silicone intakes are pretty thick.

Probably because mine is a 2017 EB PP, stick shift, Cobb stage 2 (tune, CAI, exhaust, & intercooler). I chose it for all the reasons you mentioned, $10k less, mileage, insurance, plus lighter handling on the twisties. I've done quite a few bolt on mods myself, and find it easy to work on. Accessport Pro PDTune, cai(mostly for the sound not that it adds hp), high-flow cat downpipe to x-pipe to outlaw flowmaster exhaust, CVF race intercooler with new charge pipes. I don't have access to a Dyno but I think it's in the low-mid 300hp range. Thinking about adding a HPFP and running e85 to get into the 400hp range. If it blows up the factory turbo I'll go with NX2 and that would put me around 500hp which I feel like is too much for the factory block which I'm no touching lol.

    as someone who has had a 2018 ecoboost 10speed i completely agree these cars are very neutered stock especially the 5lb pos intercooler, the mods I’ve done are a mbrp race exhaust,k&n intake tube, cv fab street core, Jlt oil separator, and ford performance tune. I make about 320 whp and 400 wheel lb/t on 24lbs of boost that doesn’t taper off like it did stock I still can get 32 mpg, I also did a fair bit of subframe stiffening to make the car corner better. It’s a very underrated car that doesn’t get a lot of attention cause it doesn’t have a v8. Great video.

    Sounds like an intercooler, free flow exhaust, and a tune would make massive improvements. The Heat soak in the intercooler affect performance a lot. Again Ford building a product that is inferior right out of the gate. They had to have known the intercooler was not big enough to even keep the core temp stable. I would even go as far as to say they just care about cost and not the emissions because the extra fuel ya need to throw at it when the cylinder temps creep show they are not targeting emissions, just cost to build and how much money they make off the customer in the end.

      It's mainly the sound. Furthermore, while I like the sound of the Ragazzon system, my kids who drive the car did not. It's relatively quiet but still sounds sporty which I like. However my kids wanted it a lot louder so they changed it out to the Borla system, which we also sell.

    Say Greg, why do engines make more power with lower engine coolant temperature? Is it because the ECU can apply more boost if the cylinders are shedding more heat? My car significantly lowers the coolant temperature when I put it in track mode.

    • @GregsAirplanesandAutomobiles
      @GregsAirplanesandAutomobiles  8 месяцев назад

      Within certain limits lower coolant temps move the engine farther away from knock due to lower cylinder head temperatures. In this video I was specifically talking about air temp in the intake manifold, not coolant temps.

      @@GregsAirplanesandAutomobiles I learned about water injection in the 70s. I am an advocate for it. In today's engines I would only use distilled water. The impurities in tap water can possibly corrode aluminum. I remember a guy around Winchester Va took 78 Ford Fiesta added water injection and raised compression by 1 atmosphere. Boosted power, improved economy and lowered emissions. Just a basic engine with carburetor. Always wanted to try it.

    When did Ford start making 4 cylinder Mustang? We would never buy a Mustang with such a small capacity engine here in Australia

    • @GregsAirplanesandAutomobiles
      @GregsAirplanesandAutomobiles  8 месяцев назад +1

      Ford has been putting 2.3 turbos into Mustangs since 1979, so this isn't new. Furthermore, ever since the car's introduction in 1964 they have had small engine options, in that year it was a 170 cubic inch 6 cylinder, which was small at the time and only 100 gross horsepower (about 75 in todays terms). The current and previous generations with the turbo 2.3 are very competitive with the V8s around the track and have many advantages as a daily driver.

      I disagree about open deck blocks, all my Alfa Romeos have open deck blocks, in fact they are much more open than the Ford and yet they hold up fine with quite a bit of power. Now what you're talking about is a situation specific to the Ford ecoboost, not open decks in general. cont:
      In the case of the Ford, I'll talk about how to avoid these problems as I increase the power. At the current level, which isn't crazy high, it's not an issue.

    • @GregsAirplanesandAutomobiles

      The entire reason for the intercooler is to take away heat created by supercharging/turbocharging. A good cold air intake on a normally aspirated car is usually the answer for those vehicles.

It's actually here on RUclips. The Ford won one test out of six. See 5.7 l lost the one during the heat of the day and one at sunset where air was cooling off it won. So I'm always wondered if you could intercool a regular engine. An intercooler is more effective than a cool air intake. That is of course my opinion

      @dukecraig2402 8 месяцев назад

      @@JohnRodriguesPhotographer
      You're apparently misinterpreting something somewhere if you believe that, an innercooler can't cool down your intake air any more that what the ambient air temperature is, and a cool air intake just draws in ambient temp air from outside the engine compartment, the air passing over the innercooler and the air going through it are literally the same temperature, therefore the innercooler won't cool the intake air anymore than what it already is.
      Innercooler's work on boosted engine's because the process of compressing the air via a turbo or a blower heats up the air, just the same as an air compressor heats up the air it compresses, all an innercooler does is cool the heated up air down after it comes out of the turbo or blower (whichever is being used), the most you could hope to cool it down to is the ambient air temperature which is what the temperature of the air going into a non boosted engine is anyway, so no, an innercooler on a non boosted engine won't do anything, it can't cool down the air passing through it any more than the air flowing across it, which once again is the same temperature as the air being drawn into a non boosted engine through a cool air intake.
