Review: 2024 Ford Mustang EcoBoost High Performance Package - There's 1 Big Flaw...
HTML-код
- Опубликовано: 4 июл 2024
- I spend a week with the 2024 Ford Mustang EcoBoost with the High Performance Package to see what the S650 EcoBoost is like to drive and live with. With a revised engine to go along with the new looks inside and out, the 2024 EcoBoost Mustang is arguably the one that gets the biggest changes for 2024. And if you can stay away from option packages, it can still be a pretty good value too. Unfortunately, the car has one big flaw in my opinion...What do you think about the 2024 Mustang EcoBoost? Thanks to Ford for providing this vehicle to review!

I really appreciate your perspective on car reviews, it's actually quite unique in the car reviewer space. True honesty in long-form which is actually relatable to the average buyer and not just talking about 'steering feel' for 10 minutes straight. Keep doing what you do - these videos are becoming the best way to understand what a car is actually like to drive / listen to / sit in without pretentiousness or the classic 'reading off of the marketing sheet' review.
Thank you David, I really appreciate that. What you described about the reviews has always been my goal, to paint an accurate picture of what a car is like, so it's great to hear that that's being noticed.
This car should be $30k max. Prices are ridiculous.
You don't want to pay $40k for an anemic 4 cylinder?
Not in today's money. Now that's what you pay for a Toyota 86.
I paid $32k for a non performance Mustang Ecoboost in 2016 after discounts so that’s not really realistic 8 years later.
There are a few 2024's near me for 31-33K but most are hovering around 38-40K.
I paid 33,900 for my 24 EcoBoost with 101a package and active exhaust @@Jacobk66
Don't like the screens. I guess that's why it's against the law to use cellphones while driving, so automakers can place tablets in for dashboards with layers of menus to distract while driving. 😖
Exactly - more distracting then a cell phone
Agreed. If they just did a layout that doesn't look like my office desktop it would help. I am completely turned off this gen because they double brow dash layout is gone.
Agreed. It... Just doesn't feel like a mustang interior.
They look terrible on every car.
Not sure why this is a trend. This is a dealbreaker for me
The fact that the Recaros aren't power or heated is really sad considering my 2014 Camaro has heated and power adjustable recaros.
Yea that's honestly dumb af. Only worth it if you're upgrading from the base cloth seats.
I would imagine the idea being that they weigh less than the powered + heated + ventilate versions. But, the price is very steep.
see idk i kind of like that, i had similar recaros in my 2018 GT pp2, and i loved them. if im paying extra for light bucket seats i want them to be LIGHT, because clearly if im using the car for track use or backroad fun i want less weight. i bought a bmw and their bucket seats are even more hard core and for $4,500 but have motors and all that heated and cooling stuff in them, if im guna be not as comfortable at least commit and make them as light as possible
Love your car reviews, always fun and insightful. Thanks Matt!
I appreciate the simplicity of the Ecobost front end. It’s probably the best looking S650 model. The GT and especially the Dark Horse are over designed to me.
Yeah I agree.
I agree with this also.
Agree!
That's usually the case with modern muscle cars in that they display their "aggressively muscular" character.
I do not agree , the eco looks too much base model , get a gt or dark house if u want class lol
Love the videos Matt keep it up
Thanks!
Amazing video Matt.
Thanks so much for this review! I really appreciate the Mustang EcoBoost for what it is. Great to hear your perspective and first-hand experience! Already looking forward to the next review! 😁
Thanks, I'm glad you enjoyed it!
Would love some exterior revs clips, can’t wait for the next review 🔥
Excellent review! IMO, what you want to do is get the base EB with pkg 101A ($2,600). That gets you an upgraded 9 speaker stereo with XM, dual climate control, 6 way power driver seat with lumbar. Then, add the 2.3L HiPo pkg ($3,475). That gets you the 3.55 limited slip, 19"x9" wheels, strut tower brace, Brembo brakes and paddle shifters, among many other goodies. I ordered mine in Atlas Blue ($295). MSRP $38,530. Dollar for dollar this is the most fun S650.
Nice review Matt this was very comprehensive
Was WAITING for this one
Nice review Matt! Can't wait for your review of Honda Civic hybrid!
Another great review Matt. Quality video quality and driving impressions. Now the market has taken an interesting turn, there is nothing else in the pony car market. Hopefully the mustang continues the legacy of being a good pony car.
Just dropped just watched. Great video Matt.
Thank you!
I drove the old gen 2.3 and i literally thought the transmission was not connected to the same engine in the car. When it down shifted, it felt like it was exploding while doing the shifting. Great 2.3 engine thought
Yeah, the 2015-17 GTs have fallen in price a lot lately. you can get a PP or Track Pack one of those in the 15-20k range depending on miles.
I can never find S550 PP2s for sale
@@j.a.g.8689PP2 were just so good for the price and owners know that and aren’t letting them go, lol. Especially with the prices these days.
In December I was able to purchase a 2020 Mustang GT 301 a black accent package with 30k miles for $30k out the door. Since the s650 Mustangs came out I was able to find good deals on s550s. Purchased a Whipple for 10k installing it this weekend. So for about $40k I have a low mileage s550 with over 700whp.
Thanks Matt for reviewing the S650 EcoBoost, I hope they REFINE the Transmission "again" to give us more crisp shifts and hopefully (since they removed the manual option) give us a more responsive Paddle shifting option. Glad you liked the power and more bass tone of the "new" EcoBoost I think its the New valve train (Roller finger followers instead of the Direct acting Mechanical Buckets)
Thanks for reviewing this. Not enough people do, and when they do its always “the GT is better” when yeah, obviously, but there are buyers who want a new fun sporty car for mid 30k range, and comparing this to the brz, gti, elentra n is worthwhile
I’ve never been this early
Same
That's what she said
Seems like a good entry level sports car. Glad ford still offers a more affordable mustang. I’ll prolly upgrade to an s650 from my 550 gt in a few years.
Those screens are absolutely horrible, don't fit completely. It's lazy design as with most other automakers - just stick slab of LCDs behind the steering wheel and call it a day. I will wait for refresh and see if they learn how to integrate LCDs into the dashboard like in the previous generation or like Audi does it.
Agree, they look rubbish.
I like it 🤷♂️
I prefer the older styling tbh. The screens are cool but they could have implemented the switches.
I remember watching the premiere of this bodystyle Stang. I was excited about the Ecoboost until they days it's only coming out as an automatic.
I like the front but hate the back
You're saying what I am thinking. I had a 22 GT that I bought new and sold out of necessity. I'd like to eventually get another brand new Mustang, but I just haven't warmed up to the tech and lack of heritage in the interior. Maybe I'll find a low mileage 18-23 model in a few years.
Great job, Matt. Some strong criticism here coming from a mustang owner but at least Ford is still committed to making the car
I actually drove it Boston. I loved how the 2024 drove. I wasn’t impressed with screens and because they felt like two tablets, and you feel like it could have been better integrated into the dash. For me it was how some of controls were on the entertainment screen at the bottom of the screen. I wish they would had left the toggle switches. It was such a real touch of class.
Let's say it: 15-17 Mustangs is the best generation. Hopefully Ford plans on making a HPO version of these ecoboost with 350hp and manual transmission. That would be seller! ^=^
The 1 big flaw for me is no manual transmission.
That’s another one for me too.
@@MattMaranMotoringkinda wish they would bring out an even cheaper base model, take the old unboosted 3.3 V6 from the F150 that just went away, offer it manual only and basically strip out anything not mandated by law 😂
Me too.
My 2019 is a manual and it’s my favorite thing about the car🤷♂️
@@fortheloveofnoise9298that would be a great idea. The 3.3 kinda rips in the top end.
I had a '24 EcoBurst convert for a rental for a week a few months ago. Pretty much agree with most of what Matt presented, especially that the it takes a gear salad 10R80 to make the MT-82 desirable. Found that the fuel economy was at best par with my '19 Mustang GT 6-speed - was usually worse. I also found the Stop/Start even more problematic than Matt did. It would only restart if I put it in PARK - WTF?! - so pushing the defeat button right after the START button became routine real fast. Overall, there's no danger of replacing my S550 with an S650. In fact, I'd much rather have a Maverick than any S650 with a 10R80.
Yeah I can't wrap my head around why people like the 10R80. Thanks for sharing your experience!
good video! i will watch it later
After listening to your review I'm very happy with my 2017 EcoBoost premium. I like the smaller screen and the real controls as well as the old fashioned Guage look. I am happy with the auto 6 speed transmission and feel that my car is more responsive than what you're describing. Fuel economy is 18 to 22 mpg mixed usage and 32 to 35 mpg highway. I would like the magnaride. I even prefer the outside look of the 2017 versus the 2024. I really enjoyed your review. Thanks 🎉
Thanks for sharing your thoughts from an EcoBoost owner's perspective Lynda! I agree with you, I think you got the sweet spot of the last year of the old but good 6 speed and the more analog experience. I hope you continue to enjoy yours for a long time!
@@MattMaranMotoring ❤️ thanks
@MattMaranMotoring I agree. And important to me ---- I also have a CD player. I'm old school and have CDs. Plus because my car was a former rental I have the small spare tire rather than a patch kit.
Great review! You pointed out a lot of things I didn't know about this new mustang. I wasn't planning on getting one and now I'm much further away from wanting one. The auto start-stop, the lane keep assist, and all the standard safety features are a huge turn off on top of the ugly screens. All those things do is balloon the price up. The base model of this thing should be stripped to a great engine and a comfortable interior with basic safety features. I don't need any of those fancy sensors or anything that takes control away from the driver. Keep the price down and sell more cars.
23:04 Lexus LC 500 drives by. My dream car!!
Mine too!
The loud exhaust exaggerates the lugging noise even though the motor's happy at 1500 rpm.
I had a similar problem with the VA WRX's CVT where it would cruise at the EXACT rpm where it would drone the most lol
Great Video Matt! I think Ford focused on “innovating” the wrong things from the S550->S650. Aside from better brake feel and a punchier engine, I don’t think S550 owners are missing out on much IMO.
I love my 24 ecoboost premium got 4.48 0-60 not bad I'd say
Cap
That startup chime sound sounds like an R56 mini cooper.
Great job & I'm planned on buy this someday.
I’ll happily keep my manual S550 EcoBoost 😬
I think adaptive cruise is an additional charge? co-pilot with some things is included last I checked, but acc was extra
Those Recaros are heavenly. I really don't think those screens will age well, which is unfortunate. Definitely more of an iteration than an evolution, but still a solid platform.
Excellent review Matt, fully agree with your opinion on upspeccing an EB like this making zero sense. I could never live with those horrible split iPads of the base model though. Ditching the real Mustang dash in favor of those screens was a terrible idea to begin with, but the base model split screens really look like shit.
let's goooooo matttttttt
I like it a lot.
"when the transmission knows what it's doing" lol so many feels there. I need to unhook my battery this weekend to see if i can improve mine. Sport mode is almost unbearable to use it's so lurchy. This is my 2nd mustang... I don't think I'll buy a third.
Sorry to hear that it's not great for you either, but thank you for sharing your ownership experience.
S550 GT w/ a manual is peak
I disagree on the styling. I think the s550 is a sexier looking machine. Not by a lot on the exterior. But even more so in the interior.
Oh I 100% agree, I prefer S550 in all the ways.
Sheesh over 3800lbs? Normally I'm not one of those people who always say "the old one was better" but i definitely think the S550 generation was better than the S650.
I feel like they did not listen to Mustang owners when designing the S650. They even said that they polled gen z and Millennials yet they charge rich boomer pricing for these. The car gained weight. Quality is still meh. The front end on the GT looks goofy. The Dark Horse was the weirdest choice for a special edition mustang and didn't even come swinging out of the gate with like an NA 5.2 or something. Instead it's just a rebadged mach 1. Idk. S650 feels like kinda a miss. Farley was more focused on the GT3 cars.
It's in the price range where some us can definitely afford a Ecoboost or a low option GT. As millennial think the last gen looked better, they could have just saved themselves money and just updated the S550 a bit.
Sales even for the Stang are way down. It probably didn't make sense to invest in another heavily modified variant like the GT 350.
All the tech is probably the reason I'm NOT chomping at the bit to get a new car. I recently had a Toyota Corolla rental and it wanted to drive for me by default. I HATED it. Auto braking, auto lane assist.....maybe it's just me but actually piloting the car is half the fun. It's wild because this Mustang you're showcasing was loaded with tech, but the target buyer probably can't even afford it. Weird times.
I just picked up a manual '21 GT with 30,000 miles almost fully loaded (non-PP) for $36,000 out the door. I COULD NOT imagine paying $15,000 more for a 4-cylinder with a slightly nicer interior 😂
Recaros on a ecoboost stang is nuts
Not a fan of this new generation. I still think 2013 had the best design styling wise. Those screens would be a deal breaker too if I was a mustang guy. They look tacky and have no flow with the dash. Guess I've lived too long, I'm not a fan of most new cars these days. Wonder what happens when these screens die after 100k miles? Bricked car?
As a 2019 GT owner with 401A option. My opinion hasn’t changed of the s650 is that the they mailed it in with the instrument panel.
Nailed it? Or something else?
@@ksorsomeplace mailed it in. Basically spent no effort designing a panel. They might have been granted no budget to design a more complex one or they just didn’t care and submitted their work at the 11th hour.
@@appleiphone69 I agree that it was uninspired. The rest of the interior they didn't even touch. Of course, they touched the price.... I've heard that the reason for the screens was to appeal to the generation raised with screens that don't relate to a mechanical items like a set of gauges and design elements to house them.
@@ksorsomeplace that’s marketing fluff. The generation raised on screens can’t afford this current generation unless they are making at least 150k.
@@appleiphone69 Depends which one/trim level. The $30,000 or so ones an income of less than $150,000 should be sufficient. The Dark Horse, yeah, you need to make more than household median income for sure.
I am surprised the mileage is so much less than the 2011 V6 I had. Seems so expensive is the down side. The GT does have the resale advantage but to most they never even use the max of what the Ecoboost provides.
The weight of the car play it's a huge Factor as well when you're talking about the engine and the transmission not communicating
The 2024 Mustang Ecoboost HPP actually comes with 350hp/420 lb.-ft of torque, proven by Engineered Motorsport Solutions, #1 tuner of Ecoboost engines.
bumping for that algo, but i really do not like the rear end on these mustangs. hope they fix that up a bit for later model years.
I wish they would give it a manual, and cut some size and weight.
Ford engine bays are in need of some high refinery lol. The late 90s early 2000s SHO V6 engine was so gorgeous to look at. I used some AI tools to render an EcoBoost with a Golf GTI (stang front, shortened, GTI rear 4 door). Such a cool render. I'd love to see Ford just make a Mustang hot hatch lol. They made a Mustang EV so why not?
Keep up with s550 gts? There’s like 12-15 mph trap speed difference between them.
I'm talking just 0-60 here.
When are the test times for the new 2024-2025 Hyundai Ioniq 5 N (Performance) model?.
I will be reviewing the Ioniq 5 N soon! The review will be posted next month!
@@MattMaranMotoring
-Ok.
Good.👍🏻👌🏼😉
Huh, my C7 (manual) gets about 19 combined and I can get close to 30 in 7th
Anyone else notice the panel gap between the hood?
How do BMWs get in the 30s with the B58 in AWD form and 400 hp when this has a hard time breaking 20? I would get that in the M440i and my wife gets over that in the M240i.
I just hope they upgraded the 10R80. I had one in a 2022 EB - it crapped out at 4k miles. Was fixed under warranty with the same parts. There are design flaws and quality issues. I traded it in that day for another WRX. Happy now. turns out there are numerous class action suits over the transmission. Until Ford admits they are selling flawed transmissions and do a recall, they have a problem. Destroyed my trust in the brand.
Matt - excellent assessment of the transmission - the issues you raised existed in the previous “gen,” or should we say a slight tweak. The 10R80 is just not great, and it is in so many Ford vehicles!
Thanks for sharing your experience. I called the transmission the big flaw because of the way it reacted but if it’s literally mechanically flawed as well that’s even worse. Yikes.
@@MattMaranMotoringagree with you. So, I kept my 2019 Bullitt - just like yours, and got a 23 WRX. It is a great combination of fun cars. Very different and excellent in their own way.
They put the wrong EcoBoost in the mustang!!! They should've used the 2.7!!! Much better motor for such a car!!
Since I would be locked into only an auto option either way I think I would rather track down an Infiniti Q60.
The pano screen is cute in a EV hatch, or a big suv, but here it just makes no sense. Every shot it's in just look bizarre!
They gotta cut corners somewhere to deliver the performance per dollar value.
Also you would think the modern screen would get better. Seems a lot of them are so slow and clunky now.
Agreed
Those screens look out of place, like they didn't care if they fit or not.
I cannot comprehend paying more than $30,000-$35,000 for one of these. I am sure it's great, and I am not one of these people that'll bash it for being a 4 cylinder...but cmon, it shouldn't be that much
Gotta pay if you want it fully loaded.
It's the same price bracket as most of the high performance economy based cars. As well as the entry BMWs and the 4cyl Supra.
It's not the same kind of 4 banger that's in your grandma's ecobox.
Maybe Ford should get the automatic to play well with the Ecoboost engine BEFORE ditching the manual! I also think the Mustang needs to go on a massive diet, 3800+ pounds is ridiculous for the Ecoboost.
Its a refresh
#NotificationSquad
My old 2014 V6 got that same fuel economy basically...I could get over 30 on the highway if I tried.
There's alot of knit picking and its justified, I'll go with the exposed area infront of that brake pedal, unexcuseable IMO🤷♂️
It’s sad how much Ford missed the mark on the s650. I will say the GT performance pack is MUCH better than our 2016 but still no where near as good as a Camaro 1LE.
The camaro chassis is waaay more advanced for sure.
@@drunkpolack7612completely agree. Im looking at a V8 in 2027ish and as good as the s650 GT PP is still not good enough. Almost needs a PP2.
Hopefully I’ll be able to get a good condition 2020+ SS 1LE in a few years.
@@ChrisFromFloriduhI'm not surprised tbh.
Ford pretty much has no direct competition now.
It already smoked the Z in every way, and the Supra is on it's way out. At least Ford tried to keep price in line, and didn't bump up a whole 10k like some others did.
I have mixed feelings about the 2024 mustang. For one the screen just too much for me. I had a 2017 EcoBoost which I love dearly. I own a 2023 EcoBoost now and it's okay but I missed the extra headroom that I had in my 2017😅😅.
quickly brushed over the brakes.. apparently it brakes better than a GT2RS lol...
All 4cly vibrate we all know that .. But damn, that baby be shakin' lol
hard press not to consider a 4 banger mustang with recaro seats, 315 hp and 350 torque.
Not really a fan of the 650's, and great point about those seats. Definately not worth it in my opinion.
I’ve owned nothing but Mustangs since 1988 and I’m definitely not impressed with this new version, I have a 2019 GT performance pack 1 now and would never sell it..
Matt you wouldn’t happen to sold the bullitt to someone in Florida?
No mine went to Utah.
@@MattMaranMotoring gotcha. I saw one and I told my wife I think that is Matt’s car and she looked at me crazy and said who is Matt lol.
Great review! I've never gotten more than 20mpg on any of these ecoboost Mustangs, stick or auto. Biggest disappointment for me is not having the manual in the ecoboost any more. Base model stick shift ecoboost was the most fun one could have at that price and would totally buy one again. Today, it's a solid buy in the low 30s but I feel like I've outgrown the classic Ford flaws and wonky decision making. No manual ecoboosts, and the automatic behaves strange. NO MANUAL MODE OR PADDLES in the base ecoboost is just silly in a car like this. Pricing is strange. They have Ford 360 copilot and iPad screens as standard, but paddles and manual shift isn't standard? Lol they just seem a bit out of touch
I didn't even know they deleted the paddles and manual mode on the base car, that's bizarre.
I'm probably in the minority, but I really hate the new styling. I hate the "wedge" rear end, the new front looks blocky and not sexy, and the new front lights don't do anything for me. Give me the 2015-2017 or the 2018 styling any day, but I absolutely love my 2015 Ecoboost so I'm bias. But I recognize everyone has their own preference and at least they still make a manual trans sports car.
Such an ugly car.
Agree with you except, front end is OK, even maybe nice. The rear is totally ugly and that digital tablet stuff belongs I a Lincoln>>> NOT A MUSTANG-----
So the 2024 Mustang is a NO!!!!
The fact that an EcoBoost can get to $50k is absolutely insane.
Imagine paying $50k for a Mustang and still having people make fun of you for driving a 4 cylinder Mustang 😂
Yikes.
You need to make better life decisions if you’re spending $50k for a Mustang and are hanging out with toxic people that make fun of you.
@@matttakahashi8283 Paying $50k for a 4cyl Mustang is definitely a bad life decision.
It’s not necessarily people you hang out with that will make fun of you, it’s coworkers or random people that come up to you in public to talk about your car. You see stories all the time online about V6 Pony car, or EcoBoost, owners complaining about people giving them a hard time about not buying the V8.
They try to defend their purchase, but you can tell they have V8 envy.
I personally don’t have anything against the non V8 Ponies, and I wouldn’t make fun of someone for buying one (unless you spent $50k on it 😭)
Having had a 21' Ecoboost A10, it's too bad the transmission continues to be the biggest flaw of this car. Feels like the car has an arrhythmia, irregular jerks, inconsistent shift points, and all around disappointment. Most people renting these from Hertz won't notice though; the target audience for the new Ecoboost in my opinion having dropped the manual completely.
Sorry to hear that the A10 experience wasn't a good one for you either, but thank you for sharing your ownership thoughts!
Did you feel nostalgic from your bullitt driving this?
I mean, he used to own an ecoboost back in the day
Yeah this reminded me more of my old EcoBoost.
Rather get a low mileage 15-17 5.0 for 25-27k.
Just guessing but could the fatal flaw be that it’s a 4 cylinder
Mustangs need a V8. Otherwise there is zero compelling argument to get this over something like a Golf R which is both quicker and has vastly more livability.
I wonder if this one is a 'dud' - based on what other's in the moto journalists have said doesn't sound like this ends well for 2024 EB - probably one to AVOID....
I have nearly the same feeling about the GT etc.. Instead of capitalizing on what makes it a Mustang - they tried to 'modernize' without really thinking about what works, and as a result the only thing keeping it Mustang is the engine. The car might as well be ANY bloated sports car otherwise. Disappointing as for what seems to be one of the last ones I was hoping for more. Quality hasn't changed much either.y
Is it available with a Manuel?
No manual option
ummm look how bad that cutout looks for the steering rack at 12:08, how is ford having such bad quality issues with the new mustang
I think Ford is already getting lazy with no Camaro or Charger/Challenger to compete with. Ive seen an S650 in person and personally, it doesnt change enough from the S550 to warrant the price
Too many gears. They gotta chill with these 10 speeds.
