Apparently Gene Wilder improvised much of the movie. The intro of Wonka where he puts on a walk with a limp using the cane and then magically forward rolls implying he is fine was improvised. When asked the reason why Gene wanted to do that. He replied, because then it will add to the already established fact that we the viewers and characters never know when Wonka is being serious or not
@@salag13 I've read some time before, that this scene wasn't known to the actors except Wilder, who was told to chant this poem from the original book. The tunnel and all the tripping is a one shot and the reactions are genuine, from what I've read. That’s probably my favorite line in the movie. Partially because most of the comments that come out of his mouth are pure imagination (but mostly sarcasm and derision) but that line sounds like a genuine question without any malice to it

One of the ALL TIME BEST MOVIES MADE. I never tire of the 70’s cinematography. He was one heck of an actor/ entertainer. This movie will entertain any age children- adults, forever!
I agree that Wilder's Wonka has a more sinister edge to him. You get the feeling that despite his joviality, there's a terrible fate in store for you if you displease him. Hell, when Mike signs the contract and brings up the movie where the husband kills his wife for the insurance money, Wonka says "Clever" like he appreciates the scheme. He's clearly a dude with some underlying rage and I would not want to be on his bad side.
I must have watched this movie at least 50 times as a kid. I had it recorded from TV on an old VHS Tape. Perspective is everything, Now seeing this as an adult, the entitlement and wicked attitudes of the parents in particular are astounding. There are several interesting undertones within this film. Movie Charlie definitely represents envy. The opening scene in the movie where he's looking at the other kids in the candy shop and right before his mothers song he's clearly envious of other people getting the ticket. Also, lust is not always sexual. You can lust for other things, hence terms like bloodlust.
R.I.P Gene Wilder ♥ I love this movie mainly cause I've seen it multiple times. Gene has made willy wonka as a colorful man with a bit of unexpected twist.
@@morgancampbell2888 probably coz it has kids in it and they get eliminated one at a time. I agree, it's a dumb comparison to make. Like a child would make. Lol, idiot (the OP)
Everyone tries to compare the different versions but they just aren't meant to be, they're completely different, and they send completely different messages. I don't see why you can't enjoy both.
Thank you. These are supposed to be two completely different Willy Wonkas with two completely different approaches to adapting the character. Depp will always be my Wonka, personally, as I grew up with him, and he simply just resonates with me more. (I also find it a bonus to know that he's more accurate to the book.) However, I still gotta give Wilder the credit he's due. His Wonka is still a good character in his own right divorced from other iterations, and Wilder's phenomenal acting did wonders to breathe life into this Willy Wonka
Theyre both well adapted from the original Wonka in the book and both bring life to character and succeeded at making an entertaining movie, they just took different creative paths, gene wilders wonka focus on the og Wonka's more manic and passionate traits and Johnny Depp's took on more of the og's social awkward and sassy tendencies amongst other things. They're both loyal to original material and portrayed a valid perspective of the story. Johnny's Wonka movie wasn't a remake of Gene Wilders, it was it's own adaptation of the book so it's redundant to even compare them in all honestly, the books title is Charlie and the chocolate factory but when making genes movie they changed it bc Willy Wonka is a more attention grabbing while promoting the movie, Johnny's movie chose the original book title because it wouldn't make sense not to since they wanted to be as clear as possible this wasn't a remake it was it's own adaptation. I really don't think someone who wanted to remake the gene wilder version would call up Tim Burton to direct. It could be argued Depp's version is more dedicated to the source material only because they had the means to portray things in the book that are more complex than they did in '71. So Genes movie had more tweaks to the plot and created a few full scenes that weren't canon to the book at all but were needed to keep the story moving and they did it fantastically.
The best part is how the other guy is like “yeah! I’m on board and here to say it with you!” But then as Wilder keeps going, he starts to literally frighten the guy to the point where he doesn’t know what to do 🤣
“We are the music makers and we are the dreamers of the dreams !” Don’t get the impression that he is counting her among the “we”! I do love this little exchange ! Combined with the face grab I’d always found it threatening ! Wilder really did a great job with a very strange character !
3:03 If it was Johnny Depp's Willy Wonka recreating this scene, something tells me he'd make it just as unhinged and petrifying but instead of screaming at the kids and parents after his speech, he'd be maniacally laughing.
Wilder’s Wonka: Likeable, Wise, generally friendly, tries to teach the 4 kids a lesson for their own good Depp’s Wonka: Irritable, sarcastic, a bit Childish and immature, intends to punish the 4 kids out of spite and annoyance

That explains why Mr. Salt awkwardly says “rowing” when he’s tripping in the boat.
