The writers of this movie deliberately sprinkled the script with various quotes from other original sources. They aren't in the book (bear in mind the movie does use a different title), but they are one of the things that I think makes the movie better. I agreed with Gene Wilder, when asked about the "re-make", compared it to trying to re-make the Wizard of Oz. I can no more imagine any other Willy Wonka than Gene Wilder, than I can imagine another Dorothy than Judy Garland. Don't misunderstand, Wilder was not claiming "Willy Wonka" to be the equal of "The Wizard of Oz" -- he was saying that some classics just cannot be re-made. And I agree.
Such an artistic genius of Gene that he delivers the line flawlessly and almost without acting begging the reality of himself and the story that is told. Moreso, such a subtle climax to an endearing adventure. Rest In Peace, Mr. Wilder! You sir are a Gentleman among men.

I appreciate the ambiguity. There's no scene of them all exiting the factory like in the book or Tim Burton version, nor are their grisly demises confirmed and outright portrayed like in the (kind of disturbing) musical. It suits Wonka's whole M.O. in this movie to keep the viewer uncertain to the end. He does promise Charlie that the other kids are alright, but that's still down to how much you trust the man.

Why is it that when we get “hep” with jazz we just go “Boody-boody-boop-de-boo” and so on, and enjoy ourselves swinging with it? It is this participation in the essential glorious nonsense that is at the heart of the world, not necessarily going anywhere. It seems that only in moments of unusual insight and illumination that we get the point of this, and find that the true meaning of life is no meaning, that its purpose is no purpose, and that its sense is non-sense. Still, we want to use the word “significant.” Is this significant nonsense? Is this a kind of nonsense that is not just chaos, that is not just blathering balderdash, but rather has in it rhythm, fascinating complexity, and a kind of artistry?
