    • @jakeo1209

This movie was actually Gene Wilder's idea. He was a brilliant guy.
He came up with the idea, and Mel Brooks loved it and they both wrote the script.
Most of their movies were a collaboration.
It was the same with Seinfeld's show. Everyone thinks it was all Jerry, but it was a 50/50 collaboration with Larry David.
Just to add one more collaboration. Elton John only wrote music to his songs. All the lyrics were written by Bernie Taupin. It was the best collaboration ever.

      Wilder:
When I was writing the first draft, I said, "I wonder if anybody would get it when someone said "Frau Blücher" and the horses neigh. Mel [Brooks] said, "Keep it in." Well, the audience loved it in the previews.
Actually, I chose the name because I wanted an authentic German name. I took out some of the books I had of the letters to and from Sigmund Freud. I saw someone named Blücher had written to him, and I said well that's the name. Later on, I heard from about two or three sources, who said Blücher refers to a horse going to a factory and being turned to glue. I just thought it was a funny name.

My now late grandmother and I had an argument when I was a 15year old and thought I knew better. The indignant look the Frau gives the Dr F. when he tells her he is a little tired will always remind me because it is esactly the look I got. Gran was a saintly old lady and I was an a-hole kid, we made up a little later but I will never forget the look of insult she had. That was over 50 years ago now.
