Thereby the minutious buildup of the character, it’s circumstances and developement.A master genius of comedian act in the planning, while Sellers was the improvising momentum, the improvising genius. No matter what success this series had, it’s hugely underrated. This should be pensum in acting classes, this is absolute gold. And totally, absolutely hilarious so tears run down your cheeks. I bumped into Herbert Lom in London in 2011, about a year before he passed on. We were in a queue waiting for a taxi. I thanked him for his work and how much joy these films gave me and my family. He thanked me in turn and said he had lots of fun making them.

Actually mistakes like that have actually happened, a toy gun that resembles the real gun and they get mixed up and somebody gets shot.
Just like many Police Officers pull a Tazer and end up shooting someone with an actual gun.

    • @tr4480

@@carminemurray6624 I presume are referring to the incident involving an overly excited poorly trained yet ridiculously zealous female police officer who shot a man when she was supposed to be tazing him?
It's one thing to have a near perfect replica of a side arm as a lighter, its another thing to confuse the position and shape of a tazer with that of your side arm, especially when they are often kept apart from one another.
I have to wonder what Dreyfus's wife had in mind though. i don't think we ever see her ever.

A masterclass in comedy. Not a single second or line in this scene is wasted, it's all balanced to perfection. I'm even laughing at the blind man moaning about how he found a random monkey in his living room and now he lives with him. It's all genius

Well, may I say that I wish they had shown the bank robbery more prominently - it is so much in the background that it escapes attention almost (escaped mine the first time, I have to admit. Knew something was going on there behind but wasn't clear until Dreyfuss confronts him). Wouldn't have hurt to have the camera on the happenings in the bank more. But then I'm not a very sharp viewer...

While we're passing along deserved praise to Sellers and Herbert Lom, let's not forget the man behind the camera, the brilliant, late Blake Edwards. Edwards could be modest about his talents as a comedy director, but sometimes the lack of intrusion and letting talent express itself as he did with Sellers is all that is needed. Edwards once told me he thought his great talent was pointing the camera toward Sellers in a wide shot and saying "Action." Then calling cut when either Sellers was through or everyone was laughing too loud and spoiling the shot.

Blake Edwards hired a fake fortune teller to tell Sellers that someone with the initials "B.E." would have a prominent place in his life. Sellers laid eyes on Brit Ekland and married her soon after because of the initials. I guess that backfired on Edwards !

I watched this last night and have seen this movie 20 plus times so I knew what was going to happen when Dreyfuss got the second cigarette and the camera panned to the hallway. You hear the shot the guy opens the door and there he sits with gun residue on his face. I totally lost it and laughed hysterically for 2 minutes. I can't remember the last time this happened been many years and I felt so much better. Sellers and Herbert Lom made people laugh. The best medicine. God bless.
