This comic masterpiece has probably the finest cast ever put together. Immortal lines like "stop Doctor you'll kill him!" when the monster didn't come to life. The fact that Brooks shot it in B&W makes it a timeless piece of cinematic genius.
When this came out, I was a little kid and saved up $1.00 to see it at the local theatre. I brought a sandwich and went to the first matinee in the morning. I hid under the seats between showings and watched it all five showings that day/evening. Epic.
As a kid I legit did not know this movie was actually a parody of Frankenstein but the real deal. With Gene wilder’s performance I was intimidated and rooting for his creation to come to life.

Absolutely the best spoof of an old horror movie ever made! The comedy genius of Mel Brooks! Perfect casting! 50 years later and it still makes me laugh till my sides hurt!
Ok I know this is a Mel Brooks comedy, but what makes this special is that he treats the source with the respect it deserves. I wish that most filmmakers today would do the same thing.
As a result of this anazing film, I remembered the actual Frankenstein (1931) wrong. In the original version, Dr F didnt go up to the top on the platform WITH the creature when the electricity hit, he stayed down below. He didnt scream "Give my creation life!". And in the original there were others present besides his assistants.
Actually the concept and original screenplay came from Gene Wilder although he collaborated with Mel. I read in an interview with Gene that Mel wanted to cut "Puttin' On The Ritz" so Gene ranted and raved at him about how it needed to be kept. And Mel finally said, "OK. No problem. I just wanted to see how hard you'd fight for it" -- something like that LOL
Yeah, I hear Eyegor on the 'quiet dignity and grace'. Can't say I blame the Dr for his reaction. I feel the same after working my butt off on something and it doesn't work.
I was 13 when we saw this in the theater. It was so strange to watch a new movie in black and white. Madeline cracked my mom up so bad that she went into one of her laughing fits. I still can't watch "Everybody Loves Raymond" without picturing Peter in this role. What a great comedy team!
From that fateful day when stinking bits of slime first crawled from the sea and shouted to the cold stars, "I am man.", our greatest dread has always been the knowledge of our mortality. But tonight, we shall hurl the gauntlet of science into the frightful face of death itself. Tonight, we shall ascend into the heavens. We shall mock the earthquake. We shall command the thunders, and penetrate into the very womb of impervious nature herself.

You were intimidated? And being intimidated made you root for his success?

Marty cracks me up, every time….😂😂😂
I read the electrical set that gave him life was the same one used in the 1931 Frankenstein movie
Only the facile wit of Mel Brooks could come up with this film. Just fantastic!
