Interesting fact The filmmakers were afraid that the little girl would be afraid of Boriss in makeup. Turns out she was quite taken with him and, in fact requested to ride to the shooting location with him.
Both animals & children adored Boris. A friend of his invited him to a houseparty, warning her staff not to tell her little girl who he was, as she was afraid the child would be frightened. She got busy with her preparations, & Boris arrived unannounced. When she finally went looking for her daughter, she found her settled on Boris's lap, while he read to her. Later, she cautiously asked the child, "Did you like Mr. Karloff?" The little girl explained, "Oh, yes! And it's not just because he's so beautiful!" 📚 Other friends had a huge German shepherd, which was so savage that it would scarcely let anyone outside of the family into the house. When Boris visited, it spent the whole time with its head in his lap, while he skritched behind its ears. After Boris had died, the dog's mom heard him raising an awful commotion in the living room one day. When she walked in to see what was wrong, she found that the television had been left on, & an old movie of Boris's was playing. The dog was going frantic trying to break into the cabinet to get to his old friend. 📺 Check out his (grown-up) friend Cynthia Lindsay's book, Dear Boris, for many other such anecdotes! ☕
The scene with the little girl is my favorite horror movie scene of all time. It’s so tragic because he doesn’t even truly understand what he’s capable of, doesn’t truly understand death, and kills the first and only friend he has. It wasn’t a murder. It was an accident. And a tragedy for both characters and the father. To me this movie isn’t a horror film, but a tragedy in which the monster is a victim
@@modernsisyphus OOH I need to read the book! That's such an interesting choice for the screenwriter to make. I'm not sure which I like more! It think the movie scene because he's already faced people hurting them, so adds another layer to his character! But that also shows his humanity and that he cares for others due to the fact that he saves her, and then gets harmed for doing the right thing. Thanks for the info! That's one of the beauties of the horror genre. It helps us dive into the human condition and learn more about ourselves through "monsters"
The monster is the most misunderstood horror movie “villain.” Mary Shelley does a good job in having on examine their ideas and it’s a great philosophical book. One of the biggest questions of the book is “Who is the real monster?” The monster could have been a normal (though he’s actually quite smart and philosophical) person but the disgust and fear others have towards the Monster infuriate him. The story comes out to you realizing that the true monster of the story was Frankenstein himself and humanity as a whole. ALSO FUN FACT: Mary Shelley’s Frankenstein is actually considered one of the first science fiction books. (Don’t come for me though because I haven’t fully read Frankenstein but I have done a presentation on it and did some research)
His appearance being ugly is also debatable, as we only get described what he looks like by people who are afraid and repulsed by him. Victor Frankenstein even says he build the creature out of the most beautiful parts he could find. Fascinatingly, people have different views on what he must’ve looked like based on their views on the book. I heavily emphasise with his feelings of loneliness and frustration, and therefore view him as just a really tall guy with weirdly coloured skin and scars all over. To me, he’s just another person who got dealt a shitty hand. But I also know people who do imagine him looking like a monster, because they view him AS a monster because of his actions later in the book. Idk I’ve always thought the interpretation of his appearance has been interesting.
You’re right about the whole thing since I read the book and studied it for a project. I’m glad this is movie got Elizabeth’s hair color right! Every other movie make her brunette

I love how this movie defined Frankenstein's monster as a subhuman with little to none intellectual properties, while the original monster was actually quite intelligent and had philosophical discussions of what it means to be alive to his creator
Yeah I didn't really like that about this film. The director of this film made him sound inarticulate and dim-witted, but the look is definitely iconic to say the least.
I think the sequel redeems it though. It’s a unique take. In the book he’s intelligent but sadistic, in the movie he’s dumb but innocent. He’s less a monster and more a baby in the body of a gorilla.

I argue that calling the Monster Frankenstein is accurate. In a way, since Victor created him, Adam (the Monster's name) is his son, thus a Frankenstein.
Yeah, that is true. Especially since it's about as accurate as calling Victor by his last name. In the books especially the monster is basically born a baby in a hulking, adult body who can't speak and doesn't know much about the world around it. It's basically Victor's child, like you said and calling it Frankenstein would be like using it's last name, like how we do with Victor
I think the problem with referring to the monster as “Frankenstein” is that it ruins the distinction and similarities between Victor himself and the monster, which is something I’d assume the book elaborates upon extensively.
*Puts on nerdy glasses and sniffs* Actually, Frankenstein did have a friend character in the original book. His name was Clerval and most adaptations tend to cut him out. In this case, they just changed his name.

I think Frankenstein's Monster didn't have any bad intentions. Like with Maria he just wanted to be friends there was no way he knew that she would drown, he killed Fritz because he was bullying him, I don't know if why he killed that other dude but still. He's one of the nicer horror movie villains that didn't have any bad intentions.
Scombs#1MJFan :3 As much as we would like to think that, keep in mind that Frankenstein’s brain is one of a criminal, possibly a killer. Though, I would agree that kill with Fritz was simply self-defense as he was getting harassed, the kill with the others were unnecessary, especially with the little girl(honestly, how can you not distinguish a flower from a little girl ;-;)
Orlando Martinez I didn't know the movie had him with a criminal brain but it feels kind of disgusting when you think about the book, the monster and its rage was a product of the disgust people had at him, not because he was violent inherently.
Frankenstein's Monster is definitely one of the most tragic characters in all of horror. From the screams of fear in the windmill, to the limited vocabulary, and the genuinely terrified reaction of little Maria's death, it's hard not to feel for this truly iconic character.
Classic Universal Monster movies are absolutely Halloween movies! This time of year probably has the most showings by far of classic horror, so this is perfect timing. Plus they're SPOOKAY. *air horn*

I love that the practical/makeup effects artists almost always get a shout out or props of some kind. I love practical effects (that's my dream job) and it seems that they can be underappreciated sometimes, but not on this channel! :)
Lots of people don't get nearly as much recognition as they deserve when they're the people who help make movies as good as they are - I also think stunt performers fall under this category. I try to shout them out and give credit whenever I can!
Same here! I think I've read too much Beastars fanfiction and listened to too much James McMurtry that I've started having visions of Richard Watterson as a wad of dough singing "I'm a Bun". help
So fun fact! The man named Victor in this is probably meant to be a stand in for the book's childhood best friend, one Henry Clerval.... so they just swapped their names for some reason
Frankenstein was actually described as a beautiful in the book--it was just his eyes that were unsettling. He wanted to learn what it was like to be human, so he eventually wanted a wife, but never got one due to his creator rejecting the demand.
welllll fun fact imma junior and we are reading frankenstein right now in english. Im talking the original by Mary Shelley and Victor was fucking terrified
WHAT DID YOU SAY! FRANKENSTEIN ISN'T THE MONSTER I personally call him Adam because of what he said in the book about wanting to be called Adam or something
You should make a new show, kinda like you started Cut Comparison, about the history of the monster. It would be really fun watching you talk about any horror villain, and you could even start with Frankenstein.
@@legendsnest1261 Relax kid it's a content suggestion. James loves making videos, that's why it's his job. Just because he's busy now doesn't mean he wants to make the same show forever without adding some variety to his brand.
He wasn’t beautiful, he was intended to be but once animated his yellowed skin, black lips etc are horrifying to victor. He is, however, crazy smart and kind and driven to insane rage by his ostracism at every turn.
Any parent is going to think their creation is "beautiful" at first. Later on he's described as an ogre, creature, fiend, ugly, monster, ugly wretch and a hideous creation.
I find it odd how this little girl character isn’t terrified of the monster. Kind of like how kids can see Casper as just a ghost who wants to make friends. Or maybe like how nobody questions walking talking bears in the _Care Bears_ movies.
This episode should also be called "Fact Count" cause I'm learning more stuff than I did in high school and I'm only 6 minutes in, great job Prof. James A. Janisse!!

Many people have often confused the name "Frankenstein" as the name of the Monster when it has actually always been the Doctor's name. Those who are aware that Frankenstein is NOT the name of the monster also like to claim that the Monster never had a name. However, the Monster actually DID have a name. His name was Oogie-Loogie!
I know the Kill Count content will slow down after Halloween, but I wanted to thank you for putting in all this work! I love watching these because I get to learn more about the movies in the genre, so this is a real treat for me! Thank you!

The bit with the little girl and Frankenstein's monster is actually very similar to a scene in the Escape from Bizarro World story arch in Action Comics (Issues #855-857) when a black-and-white flashback shows Bizarro meeting a young girl throwing flowers off a balcony. He then throws the girl off the balcony similarly to how the monster in this movie throws the girl into the water.
Frankenstein is and always will be one of my favourite movies, It portrays How horror movies should REALLY be, not some cheap jumpscares here and there, but actually working hard to make it as detailed as possible, even if this movie was created more than 90 years ago, it holds a special place in my heart. Thank you for covering this one James

Me "I can't believe he's going to count the monster's death." James "Don't you want to see the cute little monster icon?" Me "I Do! That Monster's dead as hell!"
Thank you for uploading. I love your channel and how you summarize movies and count every single kill with comedy on the mix. I’ve been watching since Jason part 4 and I’ve loved it all
It was likely just a way for the moviemakers to tip their hat at book readers, because they would be the only ones who would care or notice the change.
I love these smaller, older horror movies being on the kill count because even though they rarely have many kills, they are still important and classic horror movies and still deserve the kill count treatment
I like this one because its actually kinda scary. The other classic horror movies in my opinion are only watched nowadays to pay homage to them. Dracula 1931, and this movie are actually kinda freaky in some aspects.
I think Nosferatu has the highest kill count out of any classic horror film. He kills a boat's worth of people and half a villages worth of people. I love the power of suggestion in that movie because even when Count Orlok's not on screen you can steel feel his presence and the death he brings. He's like a plague. It would also be weird and hard to count.
They are very interesting in that they seemingly were more thought provoking horror than the slasher type stuff and gore stuff we have now. The focus is not on the kills, it's on the abominable ideas.

Like with Maria he just wanted to be friends there was no way he knew that she would drown, he killed Fritz because he was bullying him, I don't know if why he killed that other dude but still. He's one of the nicer horror movie villains that didn't have any bad intentions.
He was just unedgucated :(
I agree, he was misunderstood.
He killed the one guy because he was trying to kill him.
Frankenstein's Monster is definitely one of the most tragic characters in all of horror. From the screams of fear in the windmill, to the limited vocabulary, and the genuinely terrified reaction of little Maria's death, it's hard not to feel for this truly iconic character.
Regular people: When they run out of flowers they look for more
Frankenstein’s monster: When it runs out of flowers, *chucks little girl into pond*

I love that the practical/makeup effects artists almost always get a shout out or props of some kind. I love practical effects (that's my dream job) and it seems that they can be underappreciated sometimes, but not on this channel! :)

So fun fact! The man named Victor in this is probably meant to be a stand in for the book's childhood best friend, one Henry Clerval.... so they just swapped their names for some reason
Henry sounded more friendly to the audience, they couldn’t have their main character sound too cold or sharp
Frankenstein was actually described as a beautiful in the book--it was just his eyes that were unsettling. He wanted to learn what it was like to be human, so he eventually wanted a wife, but never got one due to his creator rejecting the demand.
I'm pretty sure he also had black lips, yellowish skin, and the skin was a little transparent so you could see veins underneath. Wasn't just his eyes.
He was also 8 or 9 feet tall
Frankenstein isn't the monster
welllll fun fact imma junior and we are reading frankenstein right now in english. Im talking the original by Mary Shelley and Victor was fucking terrified
WHAT DID YOU SAY!
FRANKENSTEIN ISN'T THE MONSTER
I personally call him Adam because of what he said in the book about wanting to be called Adam or something
You should make a new show, kinda like you started Cut Comparison, about the history of the monster. It would be really fun watching you talk about any horror villain, and you could even start with Frankenstein.
He's already under so much pressure.
@@legendsnest1261 i know, and im fine if he doesnt do it. Merely a suggestion.
@@WarhammerSanji I love that idea
@@legendsnest1261 Relax kid it's a content suggestion. James loves making videos, that's why it's his job. Just because he's busy now doesn't mean he wants to make the same show forever without adding some variety to his brand.
@@Jack-rk7jc I didn't want to sound negative. Sorry
In the book the monster is beautiful ( slightly viscerally disturbing ) with f-ed up eyes. Later on he was also extremely smart.
Overly sarcastic
Rage The Divine Draconic Demon lord then he burned himself at the end right
He wasn’t beautiful, he was intended to be but once animated his yellowed skin, black lips etc are horrifying to victor. He is, however, crazy smart and kind and driven to insane rage by his ostracism at every turn.
Any parent is going to think their creation is "beautiful" at first.
Later on he's described as an ogre, creature, fiend, ugly, monster, ugly wretch and a hideous creation.
the monster in these movies learns to speak later in the sequel. Its a slow process
I find it odd how this little girl character isn’t terrified of the monster. Kind of like how kids can see Casper as just a ghost who wants to make friends. Or maybe like how nobody questions walking talking bears in the _Care Bears_ movies.
James A. Janisse sounds so much like a horror movie name
Lol it sounds like a Stan Lee character
J. Jonah Jameson

Still, "Adam Frankenstein" is generally the consensus of what to name him in versions where the character needs to end up with a name.
I know the Kill Count content will slow down after Halloween, but I wanted to thank you for putting in all this work! I love watching these because I get to learn more about the movies in the genre, so this is a real treat for me! Thank you!

A burgermaster is another word for a mayor. It’s still used in some European countries like the Dutch word “burgemeester”

I know he was just joking about the hamburgers but I was genuinely curious what it meant, thank you
Burgermeester Master Burger from the Santa Claus film. And now I'm craving a burger.

Or Bob Dylan since he wrote and preformed it before Jimi. He also won the Nobel Prize for it.
I am not sure I would call "Frankenstein" a "small movie," though I understand the sentiment.
James: MOVIE SO OLD IT CAN BE MONETISED WITH NO TAKEDOWNS. GOOD!
