I love Leatherface’s first appearance. There’s no buildup to a “monster,” no tension, no suspenseful music. It just happens. Which in its own beautiful way, makes frightening.
And it ends just as quickly
@@jaelie8398 the slide door shutting seals the deal! No pun intended.
@@jaelie8398 that's another great way the scene works. By the time you're done processing the chaos it's already over.

I really love that. The first kill is so sudden and shocking: easily worth the long wait. They took a similar approach to Franklin's death, which may well be the greatest jump-scare of all time.

Dead by daylight reference
This movie has one of my favorite first kills. It's mid day and the sun is shining, Kirk makes an all too real small stumble and runs directly into the killer. It doesn't just cut away after one blow, we see him get brutally beaten down and then that metal door slides shut. It's so removed from modern jump scare kills and it still strikes a nerve to this day.
Daylight scenes are very disturbing. For instance the scene in "Zodiac" with the couple on the lake mid-day.
This scene is the one and only good thing about this movie.
I am the 1,000th like
Ikr and he got eaten!
The terrifying thing about that scene was the way he starts convulsing before being dragged off and that door closing. Horrific! One of the scariest death scenes of all time

something i just realized watching this (again) is that Leatherface steals Pam's bracelet.

I’m a psychosis patient. Someone who deals with hallucinations and delusions on a daily basis. Though some are as simple as hearing a knock on the door, some can cause me to spiral out of control, with manic mood swings, paranoia and sleep deprivation. This however never causes me to cause harm to someone else, and I used to implode instead of explode.
I’m glad you spoke about the idea that mental health suffering humans are more likely to implode and be a victim, rather than explode as a perpetrator. It’s something pretty rare in films. If someone saw my symptoms on paper, they’d probably be at least a little afraid to be left alone with me due to the media representation, even though I’m not a danger to others and have never been deemed as such.
I didn't think Franklin was annoying though and had a justified reaction. If the other characters were whinier they would've left. I would whine too if I got my arm sliced when I said don't let that guy in the van, my friends abandoned me, no one listened to me or trust my advice, etc. He probably would've survived more than Sally if he wasn't in a wheelchair since he knew something was off.

As someone in the mental health field, I appreciate that it was pointed out that most people with mental health concerns are more likely to be the victims of violence than the perpetrators. This is one of the most difficult parts of horror movie tropes.
That’s why we all sympathize with Jason👍
@@Notawarriorsfan Jason is honestly the single least infantalized developmentally disabled character in all of cinema. As amazing as these films are, I really do find them heartbreaking to watch. I’m usually not disturbed by horror movies, but seeing someone with a severe mental disability taken advantage of and abused really gets to me. It’s evident he doesn’t even know right from wrong; I don’t see him as the villain, but rather his family. Not a huge fan of Texas Chainsaw 3D, but the ending was pretty satisfying.
yeah i feel like they should explore that idea of leatherface being taken advantage of more in the sequels
I know this comment is old now but if you see this you may enjoy this: me and my dad happened to watch this right after watching the satirical Tucker and Dale VS Evil, which portrays that the stereotypical hillbilly serial killers are actually just innocent dudes getting into accidents and are very nice dudes.
So when we watched this we were LAUGHING our asses off cuz with that frame of mind, we were like “this movie is about a mentally challenged man with an artistic hobby removing home invaders!”
@@AbnAngelo7677 LOL I’ve never seen that before, I’ve got to watch it
@@lateforthesky151 it’s very good! And the timing of watching it just before watching a movie where every victim is breaking and entering this dudes house could not have been more fitting!
Leatherface is a pure villian. An absolute monster..a no mercy killing machine who clearly takes pleasure in torture and murder. He treats his human victims like cattle. With all that being said. His brothers are despicable. Nubbins loves dead things, carcasses and he loves slicing his victims so they slowly die. Cook is a paranoid schizophrenic psychopath. Mental illness runs RAMPANT within the Sawyer clan. But not just mentall illness. Psychopathy, necrophilia, cannibalism, murder etc.
Imo the only Horror family that rivals the Sawyers and may be even worse are the Firefly's. Both despicable but to me Firefly's are even more evil. Cause there's not much sign of mental illness within the firefly's. Just pure evil.
The first kill was so good imo. The way Kirk squirms around is as realistic as horror could get. The first swing most likely caved his skull and caused brain damage, which caused every nerve and muscle to twitch uncontrollably
That is disturbing
This movie upon it’s released it was banned in Australia until the mid 80s
And the fact it directly links to how cows are killed mentioned in the beginning
100%. The way he spins around, pauses, and then starts spasming is horrifying. And then of course the door slam. Most realistic looking kill I've ever seen. It looks like a documentary.
The only way it could be more realistic is if his body went stiff and his hands bent down while his body is twitching
Fun fact: Gunnar Hansen didn't want the actors to see him dressed as Leatherface until each actors scenes were shot so they would give genuine reactions to seeing him for the first time
They did that in IT with pennywise and the kids

The pig squealing is actually Leatherface's breathing sound in Dead By Daylight now, where he's voiced by the game's creator like the other villains usually are. Honestly, he did a REALLY good impression of the Leatherface pig squeal!
Fun fact: did you know that the creators of the movie actually hid leather face from the cast to get a real reaction out of them, which means it was the first time any of the cast seen him.
Edit: If you watch their faces they are genuinely terrified.

As someone who advocates strongly (and has done full scale projects in my community) against the stigma of mental illnesses I sincerely appreciate the reminder you gave about people with illnesses or disorders. More often than not stigma harms those with illnesses and it leads to assumptions that anyone with a disorder or illness is violent.
Just as James said, they are more often victims than perpetrator.
Thank you for saying that! I know you won't see this but I love to see people reminding others not to stigmatize.
"they are more often victims than the perpetrator." Yet schizophrenics are still more likely to be violent. I hate these sort of phrases that try to change contexts.
@@dtoadq not true
While there have been recorded cases of schizophrenics being violent, I personally know some schizophrenics and have done extensive research on this subject. I know that doesn't mean much on the Internet, however the fact remains that schizophrenics are heavily stigmatized of being violent.
Perhaps unmedicated and untreated, they *can* be violent, but in normal circumstances they often are not.
I get what you're saying, but feeding into the stigma that they are prone to violence is just as bad.
@@commanderweebsterz ; We are talking about unmedicated schizophrenics (or other psychosis), specifically when they are in a manic or psychotic state. They can be unpredictable and aggressive when they are unmedicated, but return to normalcy when they get meds. There are obviously many cases of this happening, I even know of/are related to several who were extremely violent for years when they were off meds. These obviously don't make the significant portion of those with psychosis, but the portion that do can be *terrifying*, so it makes sense to use them as a model for horror movie villains.
Anyways, my point really is that I don't like when truth/reality is buried by presenting 'alternative contexts'. It's like, two things can be true and not contradict each other, but to present one to discredit the other, it just doesn't sit well with me at all.

@@Miss98Bumble Saw that scene yesterday I am traumatized for life. Couldn't sleep yesterday either.
It’s just like dbd bubbas put a person on a hook and wait until they die
@@Joeyk354 That was my First thought too, the first time I saw this I thought: "Hey this just like dbd, a Leatherface get's a first hook and than just proxycamps..."
One of the reasons I love this channel is because of moments like at 5:59. James is such a diehard horror fan but so often takes the time to step back and acknowledge times when the genre splits from real life in ways that might be problematic or reinforce harmful conventions.
Yeah it takes a real fan of some thing to acknowledge the problems within it
I think I was about 4 or 5 when I saw this movie as my teenage brothers were babysitting me while watching this with some friends. I have never forgotten that “Hit her, Grandpa!” scene ever since lol.
I love how well written the movie is, especially for an early group! Pretty inspiring
Is none gonna talk about how pretty sallies eyes are? They are like a turquoise seafoam green!
seafoam is white
@@darkmoor8076 Google seafoam green. It is like a shade of mint
Darkmoor that’s why she said turquoise seafoam
You cute too, do you have insta?
@@Dubadubadu123 thats sick dude
God, James voicing Leatherface as just being real tired of these kids breaking into his house kills me, I love scary horror people acting like normal people. It's the same energy as Pennywise from the newer IT adaption being out of character but in full costume
So true: this was a home invasion movie, and Leatherface was trying to defend his home!
@@ravigahlla "These darn kids, trompin' around on my property - How am I supposed to run a family business like this? I'm gettin' too old for it!"
Sally is THE og final girl. She was smart too, she reminded me of the girl from you're next.
@@strangeandinteresting just hope that in They Talk, Chelsea voices Bubba because she loves him and she would be perfect
I love where James is now but man is great to come back and enjoy these classic counts from time to time
That truck driver is one of the greatest heroes in the history of horror.
And we know so little...
(Also its possible the truck stalled while parked, older ones did that really easy.)
James: “Unless you’re a big fan of taxidermy-”
Me: “in that case show off more of the inside”
I really want him to do 28 days later
Storyline aside, the cinematography in this movie is just eyegasmic.
Ugh yes!! The lighting and color-play is amazing
True, it’s amazing
I will say the cinematography in this film is outstanding. I can feel the heat of the hot summer Texas sun pulsating through every frame
So I got to meet Edwin Neal at Pensacon in 2021 and he was the coolest dude there!! I listened to him tell me everything they did with awe, and I'm glad he's still always excited to tell people what they did. He said "I'd rather be back in Nam than ever film that again" due to the final table scene. All that black paper in the room, I couldn't imagine how hot it was.
And also one of the scariest movies I'd ever seen when I was 17. I'm not easily phased, but that first kill and then the other chic trying to escape put the fear of God in me.
Imagine a guy walking up to you and being like "Can I look for animal bones in your yard? I need props for a movie about cannibals."
Youd be surprised how chill people are about stuff like that
You get rid of the bones and they make cool stuff out of it, I would accept too
Ed Gein was still alive when this came out, guys.....
😬😳
Surely he’s dead to this day
Oh shit ur right

Me
I will never get bored of you finding a way to sneak Billy Madison quotes into these kill counts. Never.
Leatherface: lets Pam get away
Entity: Am I a joke to you?
PolySypher dead by daylight reference, wow
10/10 great job.
PolySypher nice meme
Entity Displeased
"I think we did pretty good job so far"
I’d argue leather face is actually just a super nice guy who just so happens to be not all there mentally and is scared to disobey his elders
Agreed. It is hard not to see him as a dude bullied by his family
Yeah I mean he did spare his "girlfriend" in the 3D movie so its his family who's making him do this if you think about it
In a normal family he might have turned out OK. The 2 biggest monsters in the Sawyer family are Grandpa and Drayton.
@@Piper331 the second one too, but the second one is a good movie
Yeah that's just canon. His Dead by Daylight bio is all about how his main motivation is fear of disappointing his abusive family
17:44 Hitchhiker Nubbins is easily the most eerie character in the film.
Although the lighting help made that Pam scene a success, I also think technocolor might of been the final touch that the other Texas Chainsaw Massacre movies lack when they tried to recreate it. Because in one they had the right lighting but it still didn't come close to the Pam shot.
“Two dollars! I-it’s a good picher!”
I sympathize to easily, because that was the cutest thing I’ve ever heard
No that's not cute...
I love Sally Hardesty I legitimately just said I sympathize too easily and I said “I’ve” ever heard. Also how the hell do you like this channel with that name and profile pic. And another thing! You’re just wrong!
AAAAAW, yea i agree ❤️❤️❤️💖💖♥️💕💕💞💞🌋🌋🔥🔥😭😍😍
I would buy that picture tbh
@Christopher Marlowe oh yeeeeeeaaaaaaaaah
Idk why but I just hope the truck driver survived just because he seemed so innocent and didn’t need to get involved with that madness
In one of the conventions James went to recently, he met the semi truck actor himself and he said that his character ran to the sheriff who was working with the Sawyers and as he said "They told me to either join the club or get in the pot and I chose to join the club". He even played 1 of the chili judges in TCM2, the one holding the triangle the lady rings before announcing Drayton as the winner, so he was a ringer for them to win the contest lmao.
Crazy to know all that 40+ years after the fact
Infinity Hand I did not know that, I don’t know a lot about tcm
@@hecdawg3844 Which was why I told ya :D
To tell the truth, I adore this black guy. Smart solution, and very effective.
If that's the case, he could be a black dude who actually SURVIVES a horror movie.
I watched this movie for the first time in 2021 and it still holds up so well. I think one of the reasons it's still so scary without the gore comes from the acting especially. In particular the way Pam cries and whimpers while on the meat hook is legitimately chilling and still kinda haunts me.
The greatest horror film! It will continue to be immensely influential!
Kirk's (the first) death is so memorable for me, because it just feels so real. There's no flourish to it or extra gore, just the thud of the hammer that sounds so realistic.
It was the death rattle that got me. Had a short phase where I'd venture to liveleak or read morbid stuff on the internet and the things bodies still do after death is horrifying. Especially if it is sudden.
Fun Fact: That's actually a brutality in Mortal Kombat X.
18:41
Through-out this entire scene I was just saying "Firmly grasp it"
@Daddy Thanos
*Squidward mumbles in pain*
"Better!"
You just made my day XD thank you
@@marcoramirez2005 your welcome, but honestly I would say the same for the people liked my comment. (because it's never this fast)
I have binged through so many kill counts, that I've found myself thinking "huh, I wonder how James would recount this or what interesting trivia he could give" while watching a random (non-horror) movie.
Huge respect to what you're doing. It 100% shows how passionate you are about it
A little over 3 years after this gem came out, still love rewatching it.
I've always found it hilarious that three people walk into a random house for no good reason and Leatherface is just kinda defending his home... Although the chasing out the door and brutalisation probably doesn't count towards the defending...
When I watch this movie I take it as a “don’t ever trust ppl and don’t ever intrude” 😂 you might get lucky and find what you’re looking for but you might piss off a leatherface as well lmao 🤷🏽
texans that take those "don't mess with texas" ads to a whole nother level
Yeah.
i probably think he got angry and decided to lock her in the freezer
From Leatherface's point of view killing Kirk and Jerry was probably self defence but impaling Pam on the meat hook, forcing her to watch him chop up Kirk's body, sticking her in the freezer and killing Franklin when he heard him and Sally shouting for Jerry obviously wasn't. Earlier in the film Drayton tried to warn them because he knew his house was near Sally and Franklin's granddad's house. "You don't wanna go messing around no old house. You don't wanna go messing around other folks property. If some folks don't like it they don't mind showing ya." Basically "Don't go near my house or my little brother Bubba will make you wish you hadn't."
I understand the lore behind the dead by daylight perk: "Franklins Demise" now
Also the hooking in general
Man I hate that perk. I'd prefer if instead of making you drop it, it just makes you lose charges.
@@yourdailydoseofomid3026 its not even especially op or anything lmfao its just so infuriating
I mean, he holds on to the damn thing long enough for it to be in the next movie on his corpse.
Honesty I feel like dbd was suppose to be a Texas chainsaw game(cause the hooks and generator in the first movie). Meh probably a coincidence.
I bought this comic from a convention in my town. It's a non canon comic called loose ends written by and unknown write, it follows what happens to the semi truck driver at the end of the movie. It's not very long but it's pretty cool and the writer also illustrated it and he signed and free handed the cover picture on the blank back cover for me. It's pretty cool even if it's only like 10 pages
