The Central African Republic's capital of Bangui has seen its Muslim population drop from 130,000 to under 1000 over the past few months. Over the past year, thousands across CAR have been killed and nearly a million have been displaced. The United Nations recently stated that the entire Western half of the country has now been cleansed of Muslims.
CAR has never fully recovered from France's colonial rule, and it has only known ten years of a civilian government - from 1993 to 2003 - since achieving independence in 1960. Coup after coup, often with French military involvement, has led many to refer to the country as a phantom state. The current conflict has now completely erased the rule of law and order, and left the UN and international community looking confused and impotent.
In March 2013, the Séléka, a mostly Muslim rebel alliance, rose up and overthrew the corrupt government of François Bozizé, while bringing terror and chaos across the country - pillaging, killing and raping with impunity. In response, mostly Christian self-defense forces, called the anti-balaka, formed to defend CAR against Séléka attacks.
Clashes grew more frequent throughout 2013 as the Séléka grew more ruthless. In December 2013, French and African troops went in to disarm the Séléka and staunch the bloodshed. The anti-balaka, seizing on a weakened Séléka, then went on the offensive.
CAR had no real history of religious violence, and the current conflict is not based on any religious ideology. The fighting, however, turned increasingly sectarian in the fall of 2013, with revenge killings becoming the norm. And as the Séléka's power waned, the anti-balaka fed their need for revenge by brutalizing Muslim civilians.
"Too few peacekeepers were deployed too late; the challenge of disarming the Séléka, containing the anti-balaka, and protecting the Muslim minority was underestimated," Human Rights Watch said in a recent statement.
The bloodshed has not stopped. The UN is still debating whether or not to send peacekeepers. Even if a peacekeeping operation is approved, it will take six months for troops to be assembled.

"Christians and Muslims were one family. Then the devil came across and devided us."
This is the most intelligent thing i ever heard from a religious man.
That devil is European colonialism. They did the same with India. In India, Muslims and Hindus used to live peacefully as family. Then the British came in and carved Pakistan out of it and started an internal conflict that still is going on.
Jay Sekhon They weren't living peacefully. Many local hindu rulers resented Mughal rule prior to Britain colonizing india, and aided the british in kicking them out. And It was originally planned to have india as one nation, but religious violence BETWEEN indians THEMSELVES put an end to that idea. in fact the concept of india as one single nation was far fetched prior to Britain's rule. especially seeing as how it was a collection of very diverse and often warring kingdoms and ethnic groups.
Jay Sekhon You obviously didn't pay attention during history class.
Doctor Witten Rarely do I see a comment on youtube that is so spot on. The Muslims came to India by conquering, not by missionaries. In the process, completely eradicating the Jain religion through nefarious means. Jainism, was even more nonviolent then fucking Buddhism.
Unfortunately "was". But considering what's happening all over the world because of the two most dominant religions (Christianity and Islam), there's actually no hope for religions ever to be seen as something "good" anymore.
Even Jainism :/

This reporter is quite good. Very genuine and compassionate he talks to the natives as equals not as if he was a superior westerner.
It’s 2019 and this conflict is still ongoing. Who would have thought this will continue into it’s 6th year. Very sad development.
Indeed. Its crazy.
Interested parties and those making money of the old divide and conquer tactics are to blame-the greed of a man or a group of men knows no boundaries- and all for wealth..thats the real tragedy, hundreds of thousands of people dead so a very select few can keep their stomachs well fed, love in luxury and send their kids to exclusive schools in England and in the United States.
What good is the Hague? What good is Nato? What good is Christianity and Islam in that country?
Their all in sore need of education, in sore need of compassion and in sore need of a real leader and international intervention , sadly that wont happen.
We’ve all walked away from the light , we live in perpetual darkness and need to get back to the light , Jesus is the light , at a basic level his teachings if read , understood and practiced by the common man in this country would make a drastic change- even if the person doesn’t believe in Jesus but practiced his teachings the country would be in an absolutely different state, and that goes for any nation on earth , any group on earth , any home on earth.
Nothing to do with the Old Testaments teachings, rather the New Testament.
but that’s wishful thinking , and open to ridicule by atheists, nevertheless , if they did understand and practices the teachings of Jesus now that this country is a predominantly Christian country(what a joke) , peace would begin to flower , but something would come to disrupt this , after all , its hard for a crooked person or corporation or government to make money if there is peace and quiet, it would make its citizens take notice of what’s happening in their abundantly naturally rich country.
There is a comment by an ex sniper on this comment section who talks about being on a peace keeping mission whilst looting their natural resources in Cameroon , it isn’t a conspiracy theory or anything of the sort but just the sad simple truth 😒😔🙁

Somebody, _while this is going on,_ is shipping a constant supply stream of ammunition into the country. Think about that. Bullets don't grow on trees, and they're not reusable. Some outside source/s sending ammo.
to quote Quark from deep space nine "no one ever went broke selling weapons". if some group of people want to kill another they will get weapons from anywhere. and besides, thanks to the cold war being somewhat hotter in Africa the whole sub Saharan area is neck deep in ak47s and other tools of war.
And ain't no one just donating ammunition away for free. These people have a demand for weapons and guaranteed they'll always be able to find someone willing to sell. If guns were confiscated then they'd be using machetes to hack each other up. Weapons don't make people act violent. They've got massive internal civil struggles going on. It's so stupid to act like guns are somehow mind controlling these people into civil war.
@@smokedsalmon3907 What does the Central African Republic export, in order to make the money they need in order to import the trucks, gasoline, guns, ammunition? They don't _make_ any of it. They don't make much of anything else; they don't even grow enough food to feed themselves; Western charities ship in food, which the armies commandeer. So even though I never claimed anyone was shipping the ammo in for free, somebody probably is, because they can't afford it. Islamic countries probably ship ammo and guns to the Islamic factions, Communist countries probably ship them to any communist factions as they did in South Africa, and I wouldn't be surprised of the CIA ships them in if they can identify any factions that seem useful to U.S. or CIA interests. As for bullets mind controlling people... idk where you come up with that.

Danny Gold & Robert King, thank you for your bravery in making this documentary a reality for the viewer. What incredible insight from different perspectives of a country in conflict with itself. A powerful lesson for all of us.
Good documentation, the world needs to see this!
8:14 my only wish is that the rest of the world could see things the way this man does, much respect.
How wisdom lives in such a devastation is one of the world's greatest gifts
This 40-minute piece makes *Lord of War* seem like a Disney movie !!
***** Indeed, Disney movies are really good.
Brilliant piece of work guys. Well done
Just saw this. I was in Bangui during this time. Your story is profound. Too bad the country is still undergoing such hardship.
So sad.. heartbreaking! Babies crying 😢 sons, fathers, brothers, daughters, mothers.... all around so damn sad
RPGS go off "Definitely really tense" understatement of the year.
I'm so impressed with what VICE has been doing, especially in filling some major gaps in international reporting. This was excellent work; well researched, balanced and brave reporting.
I have that exact same bedcover at 17:56 that I bought while on deployment in Iraq in 2003. Random but odd.
You were apart of the invasion of Iraq. Your an idiot no hero.
Thank you vice
This - especially when the men were injured on the truck, and the guy was crying for his brother - broke my heart. I was in tears. This documentary did a good job of showing just how tragic and terrifying this is for normal people. Part of what was so awful was that the regular Christians and Muslims in Bangui were quite willing to live together, but instead have to suffer this kind of violence. Even those in the Seleka and the Anti-Balaka really want the same thing - peace and good governance. But how does a country come back from this? Excellent reporting.
Why are these comment sections always filled with the scum of the earth? People's true colors come out from behind the mask of anonymity.
***** I'm only half gay though.
***** Same difference
You can actually understand who is white supremacist, racist, or just halfwit dickheads by looking at their profile pictures and nicknames. You don't necessarily need them to speak. They all use the same concept of pictures and symbols.
Not often, but often enougn. When i see a black face for exmaple on a profile pic, its to 50% chance a guy blaming the white people for everything on earth, therefore a racist. I dont know, quite oftne white guys are leftists that are more racist in this way as well, but not "anti negro" racists though. I dont know if thats enough.
+Tyler Morgenstern, you are correct but this is a direct counter-reaction to a fascist like PC culture that criminalizes unpleasant forms of free speech, if you express a non-PC opinion even if it is backed up by proper research & numbers you will still undergo the risk of being shamed, losing your job etc for having a legitimate but different opinion. In order to maintain free speech in a free society, one needs to be capable of holding up when feeling insulted instead of deforming laws that criminalize unpleasant speech.
Wow. You can never really understand how lucky you are until you see what other people go through.
Being in quarantine watching dozens of vice videos , this was the most intese one
Incredibly moving, balanced, and hard hitting journalism. Well done.
For the one who don't know, this has *nothing to do with religion*, it's not religion driven 'war'.
It's actually the *overthrowing of the corrupted government*, an outcry of which caused revolutions and a number of these revolutions, ultimately formed Seleka (who happens to be mostly Muslims) to finally overthrow the government. But due to lawlessness, this had caused various of lawless acts. And Anti-Beleka (who happens to be Christians) then formed to fight against Seleka.
Using the *term religious war is wrong*, similarly if someone were to say tribal war. For the news outlets to use these term is nothing but an opportunistic misusing of the term, used by the media to identify or create sides easier. (or maybe propagandizing to old enemies.) *This is a revolution*.
_"Let me be clear, whatever you've heard about the so-called conflict between Muslims and Christians is false, is nonsense, is _*_opportunistic_*_. There hasn't been a religious struggle in this country for years."_ - Br. Yeelen Wolongo, Communaute Des Beatitudes, Bangui
But recently, *they've stopped, announced ceasefire and signed a peace agreement.*
yes it
@@Antipodean33 Same what Catholicism has done too. Its like these false religions have been torturing people for centuries. Chrisindom and Islam.
@@truthspeaks1265 i have zero respect or time for most religions, the only one i can stomach is Japanese Shinto, worship the earth, the plants the water etc, the only things that really matter. The things that all humans need
@@Antipodean33 Sounds calming.
@@Antipodean33 who created those? Sometimes you got ask yourself questions stop running awau
These journalists are true heroes, allowing to do documentaries even in war torn areas
props to vice these guys really in deep
Thank you for producing this documentary. It was really eye-opening. Please never stop what you guys are doing!
How come I haven't heard of this until now? Why is the world not doing anything? There is so much talk about the Middle East (even when there's nothing done about it), but why haven't nations focused more heavily on this as well? I swear humans are becoming more and more disinterested with how others are suffering.
Joella Berkovis Because 'Murica doesn't get involved
+Nicolas Dassonval and murica is not involved because there is no oil to control
+Jody Wilson very sad
Because muslims are the victims, christians are the oppressers and that goes against the narrative.
Mandela Isalive hahahahahahahahahahahahahahahagahagahahaga
Vice bring back these news I miss them plzz
Absolute chaos 🤦♂️
