Aleppo is Syria's largest metropolitan area and a millennia-old commercial capital. Today, however, it is a relative ghost town, threatened by regime bombing from the air and a militant offensive on the ground. For two weeks over the summer, VICE News embedded with the Islamic Front, a coalition of Islamist rebels fighting the forces of President Bashar al-Assad on one hand, and Islamic State militants on the other. From their secret tunnels beneath the ancient city to their threatened frontline outposts in Aleppo's ruined medieval centre, VICE NEWS followed the Islamic Front as, against overwhelming odds, they battled to retain control of the capital of the Syrian revolution.

The Syrian war is just about the weirdest conflict I've ever seen. There's a hundred factions and splinter groups all fighting for either slightly different or completely opposite causes and none of them are innocent, not these guys in the video either.

2020 Update: The Syrian Arab Army has complete control of the western region of Aleppo, and the city is completely safe.

But do you know the difference? Since the city of Aleppo was recaptured by Syrian government forces in 2016, reconstruction has begun. Today, Aleppo city centre has been repaired and Aleppo International Airport has been restored. Raqqa has never undergone large-scale reconstruction.The so-called "Syrian democratic forces" that have occupied Raqqa so far are actually terrorists who surrendered to Kurd. This is why they will not rebuild and will not allow government forces to enter the city.

Libya is fucked up. Its in a worse state then it was before the destabilization of Libya.
Same with Iraq. Saddam was a hard leader but he kept people in line. Same with Assad.
One of the reasons Syria is now being taken out of the oil game is because Assad proposed to Iran and Iraq to create a pipeline through their countries. This would allow Iran to sell oil to Europe.
These plans made Saudi-Arabia, Turkey and Qatar really pissed off. It was like saying FUCK YOU to the US oil dollar and their monopoly. One of the reasons there why US is supporting FSA in Syria to topple their government.

Pickleman small chance that will happen anytime soon. Germany was already used to democracy prior to Hitler so they could easily accept it. And East Germany just got another dictator. If Assad falls, I expect the strongest rebel faction(ISIS) to take control over all of Syria. Without Assad ISIS will just steam on to Damascus and these rebels won't stop them. The only thing that can stop them is a stable military with recourses and heavy weapons. Not to mention the genocide that will take place among alawites.
I would say you have 3 types of dictatorship. Type 1(Mubarak, Ben Ali, etc), type 2(Assad, Saddam, Pinochet, etc) and type 3(Hitler, Stalin, Pol Pot, Mao, etc). The fall of Assad means you swap a type 2 dictatorship with a type 3 dictatorship, or even worse you get a failed state with all these factions waging a prolonged war against each other like in Somalia, what in fact is a set of several local dictatorships fighting each other.

These guys are no braver than the average depressed teenage girl who throws herself in front of a train or the average bullied school kid who takes revenge on his school mates in a murder-suicide shootout, or for that matter the average street thug who purposely gets into lethal fights and brawls every night putting his life at risk for his gang in turf wars. So, these bearded fellows want to die or get blown up in the name of a schizophrenic 7th century Arab warlord? Good for them, but that does not make them brave, only stupid and misguided...
Bottom line, people surrender to fate or to death all the time for the most silly reasons or for no reason whatsoever. Don't confuse this lack of life purpose or lack of common sense with "bravery". If anything requires balls and bravery, it's choosing life and choosing to live when all the odds in life are stacked against you and when you confront head on the darkness and despair buried deep inside in your own soul...

i just googled pics of aleppo before and after this was such a spectacular country with beauty as far as the eye could see its absouloutly a tragedy what war has done to this country and we should all learn something from this if it can happen there why cant it happen here so sad nobody will even help from the outside i mean what is humanity for sad just heartbreaking!!
