I'm a long time fan. When Riley is traveling with his mates, take whatever risks you want. But, when you're with two beautiful women and your lovely children, stay out of red zones. This was a close call and a warning to not tempt fate again. I hope you take this seriously. I want to continue watching your RUclips channel and NOT see you on the news because of an incident. I was hesitant to post this, but I really care about what happens to you all. Enjoy the adventures and be safe.

You probably shouldn’t be so quick to judge!

I am left not knowing how I feel about this episode and the “risk” of the red zone. In one scene Elayna is supposedly crying and scared and flat said she didn’t want to go there and Riley was filming to show reality. Then Elayne shows the options and says they are taking the red zone. Was it all just acting and dramatic effect? Was it not actually dangerous? Would Riley REALLY put his family in danger? Would Riley REALLY risk being boarded and the horrors that could have taken place, especially to Elayne? I’m struggling to believe he would. But all the comments say the danger was real. If the dangers and risks were real, then shame on them all for choosing the red zone. I am all for getting off the couch and living a full adventurous life but there is a line with just plain stupid on the wrong side of it.

All the comments saying the danger is real are talking out their arse. Several years ago the area was problematic because of piracy and terrorism from the Abu Sayyaf Group, this threat has been seriously downgraded each year since the 2020 as there was a crackdown on the Sulu and Celebes seas.
Nothing in these waters is ever "safe" but they definately played it up a bit and all the people in the comments took the bait..."oooo RED ZONE!". No.

This was extremely risky behaviour and hugely negligent. The story reminds me of Richard Philips, the captain who ignored piracy warnings and was a well seasoned captain on dangerous routes and he's ship was hijacked and he was taken hostage by the pirates.
Some serious indications of reckless endangerment of children and you can get prosecuted for that.
Failure to Heed Warnings: By disregarding maritime warnings indicating the presence of piracy threats in the area and choosing to sail into the red no-go zone, you are knowingly putting the safety and well-being of your family, including your young children, at risk.
Lack of Communication Preparation: The failure to ensure proper communication equipment and procedures before embarking on the journey demonstrates a lack of due diligence and responsibility in ensuring the safety of all onboard, particularly the children who are dependent on you for protection.
Neglect of Duty of Care: As the captain of the vessel and the responsible adult for the safety of your family and crew, you have a duty of care to take reasonable precautions to avoid foreseeable risks and hazards. Your decision to sail into a known dangerous area without adequate preparation or consideration for the safety implications constitutes a failure to fulfill your duty of care.
Potential Consequences: Sailing into a red no-go area with piracy threats increases the likelihood of encountering dangerous situations, including potential piracy attacks or other maritime emergencies. The presence of children onboard further exacerbates the risks, as they may be more vulnerable and less able to respond to or escape from dangerous situations.

Given the “mayday boat” sailed towards you and then just broke off when it saw you, that is still my best guess. Clearly the Mayday makes no sense coming from a boat that was not in distress. I did a bit of digging based on all the comments here, and the anti-piracy monitoring group in the Phillipines has recommended they reduce the alert-level from Moderate to Moderate-Low because there hasn't been an incident of kidnapping in those waters in 1.5+ years due to the combined efforts of Malaysia and the Phillipines watch-groups. Given that information, it was likely an undercover watch-group wondering why their AIS has been turned off and making sure Vagabone wasn't the pirate. A bit of reading up on the situation shows that it's less dangerous than likely thought. Which is fortunate for them!

As someone who lived in this area for a year, I can confirm that you took a real risk sailing through the red zone. This part of the Philippines is classified as a red zone for good reason. There’s a fine line between calculated risks and recklessness. As a foreigner, the only reason I could stay there was due to the protection provided by a very wealthy and powerful family who ensured my security. Even with such protection, it was still risky, and I had to take extra precautions. Without that type of local support, you truly put yourself and your family in danger. I am in agreement with the many, many that I read about the danger you seemed to have embraced on this voyage through the red zone. So many circumstances seemed to have been (in my mind) warning you not to go:
    1) Red Zone = Do not enter
    2) ALL communication avenues were broken - no chance to signal for help
    3) Forest would have been unable to help protect in any hostile encounter
    4) Elayna's intuition should have been taken very seriously
    5) False MAYDAY calls should have raised the hair on the back of your neck

I'll offer up the flip side...
      1) They were making a stop next to a CG station on the fringe of the "red zone," which is not clearly defined anyway.
2)EPIRB, no? And even if they had comm, VHS isn't going to do much good, and who are you going to call anyhow?
      3) No one would have been able to protect them in a hostile (i.e., guns) situation.
      4) I think the point of what Reilly said was that he WAS taking Elayna seriously and valuing her input.
      5) I think they did just that, no?
Not saying you're wrong, but I interpreted things differently. BTW, I'm surprised they don't carry a Garmin InReach as does Wind Hippie does (and I do while grouse hunting out of cell coverage).

You could have chosen option 1, up the coast of Malaysia in safety, and gotten your sick friend to medical attention much sooner. Instead you chose to put your family in danger (absolute insanity) and prolong your friend's suffering. The arrogance and foolishness is unreal. It's all good, until it isn't, and in this case that could have been catastrophic.

Long time fan here and am really glad you made it safely! What's an extra week of travel when the risk is the safety of your family and crew? There is nothing on this earth that should take precedent over the well-being of those in your charge, Riley. The risk is certainly not worth a few days shaved off on your passage.
If you'd gone with option one, poor Forest might have been able to get medical care quicker. If that wasn't warning sign enough, perhaps losing communication in one of the more hostile and dangerous parts of the world was?
You were incredibly lucky this time.
Keep trusting your gut, Elayna and Riley, listen to her! Even if you think it's being overly cautious or ridiculous, there is nothing like peace of mind.

Like many others have a few problems with the last vlog,
    1. In all family safety situations Husband and or Father outrank the Captain.
    2. Luck or chance are not Risk Elimination or Mitigation processes.
More luck does not equal less risk.
    3. A Riley Risk Assessment process is straight out of The Little Book of Riley Shortcuts.
    4. You are not a Captain, at best you are a competent Skipper and at worst sometimes a Gilligan.
A Captain has studied and trained for many years and follows Rules and Procedures not whims.
So Little Buddy, go get Mary Ann and the other castaways and spend some time apologising, then sit in the corner, take a big breath and repeat over and over, "l am not a Captain, l am not a Captain, l am not a Capt...." until you pass out. I fear one day reading a headline about your family meeting an unfortunate end because sailing is risky. My grandparents were sailers and lost friends that had been sailing for decades. But it’s the life you choose and that’s great but to knowingly ADD to that danger in such a horrible potentially violent way I cannot fathom.

  • @teresatucker3446
    @teresatucker3446 12 дней назад +33

I’m confused. At the start of the video, you put together a montage of news videos reporting on the numerous attacks in and around the area. Then a clip of Elayna apparently so anxious about the area she’s in tears. Then fast forward to Elayna casually stating that of the 3 possible options, you decide to go through the red zone.
Now either, you were just hyping up the danger so that we’d think - wow isn’t Riley such a brave, macho muscle man. OR - you really were just being incredibly stupid?
If neither of these is true, I’d love you hear your side of this, as it’s generating such a huge number of pretty strong comments (which I guess was the intention) Cheap tactics and unnecessary given the number of subscribers you have.
Think maybe it’s all going to your heads a bit?

Females begin to understand at some point that there are predatory men out there that sends us into high alert and we learn to listen to our instincts, stop being nice and brushing off our senses with self doubt and self judgements like, "oh you're just being prejudice" or whatever. We learn discernment and discretion to keep ourselves and our children safe from harm. Having these conversations with the men in our lives who love us and haven't seen or noticed the predatory looks or stalking behaviors is vital.

That distress message is bogus as like as not. Probably pirates. I would keep sailing and have someone watch the bow for obstructions--I carry a large spotlight for the purpose. You got lucky--I think the the fishing boat that approached stopped only because they were too close to the coast guard and likely intervention in the event of your distress signal as they tried to board you.

Loved this video. All of the scenery and drone footage is stunning. Love watching the kids grow and learn and experience amazing things. The interactions between you and your children are beautiful.
Not going say too much about where you guys were, except we have land Pirates here that are really bad and plentiful. No matter where you go and what you do, there are risks. I trust that you love your family and friends. Enough said.
Thank you so much for this journey!

i know right , i mean i can take less episodes but the quality is so high that its not funny anymore. like and i mean not quality for a sailing channel but quality for a Vlog documentary travel family channel or just youtube in general. RUclips should pay you to make these things and not just advertisement :D this week it has been really impressive. 40 minutes went by so fast

When opposed to NEVER arriving, 7 days SAFELY would have seemed so easy. These careless decisions really bother me. I'm happy you're secure now.

Throughly enjoy these extended videos, however it definitely raised this old man’s blood pressure. Obvious to me was the fact that it was an experience with a positive outcome, otherwise…. I too share concerns for your safety and the risks you face. In this instance you had one very strong willed, physically fit male, one ailing male and two capable females who no doubt will defend themselves and the children until the end. But….Not likely to be successful against armed pirates. I’ve said enough, I’m glad you all are safe, this time. ✌️❤️

If you are gambling and find yourself at a pokier table, and you haven't identified who is the fish, guess what? It's you. 8 Signs you are the fish out of water. 1) you have damaged your own hull. 2) You are without comms 3)Your crew is sick 4)The military tells you "you're an idiot" 5) You are voluntarily sailing into the middle of a pirate red zone 7)You can't identify your kill 8)You're complaining about bad luck.

That’s a super sketchy area. Palawan and Sulu. My brother escaped a boarding in the 90’s by firing a flare into an approaching boat setting it on fire. I was also with some locals in 2019 from cebu bohol area who do surf adventures and they don’t go near the sulu area. That mayday call was almost certainly an excuse to board. Feels like you came close to disaster. Take care there’s only so many lucky tickets out there there.

Yo, you’re a legend. The amount of planning and work that goes into your trips is incredible. I think if you’ve skippered around the world for 8 years it definitely gives you a level of decision making at sea that us at home can’t always understand. Be safe, get that horizon

You guys have a very different lifestyle than the rest of us for the most part and I always try not to say anything if I can’t say anything nice but you should’ve taken the other option where you were sailing upwind at the end where you would not have had to stop your two children. You also have two other individuals on board and without any weapons, which I am assuming, you are putting them in a very hazardous situation which I don’t believe they signed up for or would they tell you about your boat and you guys will get it all figured out good luck and be safe
