be careful with crocs and alligators they are known to snatch people/kids off of boats, canoes, dingies etc very quickly.
In florida alligators can climb 8 ft fences. Just giving a warning to those sailors that will no doubt be follow your foot prints on this trip.

Do you have a video that shows what chores are done daily, weekly, monthly, and yearly? It would be really nice to see all the things you guys do on a daily basis.
WOUND: you need in German it’s called a wunddistanzgitter. Translated it means Wound Spacer Grids. So you can put it inbetween the salve and the gaze. Here is an example Mepilex Mepitel Wunddistanzgitter Steril 5x7,5cm Stück 1. Or AeroPad Low Adherent Pad - 5 x 5cm. These are with a puffer but less flexible for this area I would say. Both are Veery good and important to have with you.

Yes, I'm amazed at the tonal quality you are able to record aboard with that Taylor Guitar. I remember how even the tones are across the strings. I've never heard a guitar as even as a Taylor. I never financially graduated beyond my 1970 Lyle dreadnaught. Love hearing Elayna sing with the simple wonder of her voice and that guitar. Love the video. Always do! All the first aid suggestions were good (except the toilet paper which may have been intended as a joke. I hope)

When I was up that river about 13 years ago, the palm oil plantations were everywhere along the river. Just a little strand of jungle either side of the river for nature to hold onto. I’m sure the clearing of the natural force is the reason why the river is so muddy

@@geoq1905 Same, in 2012 flying in the amount of palm plantations is astounding. Nearly all the natural habitat is gone. So sad.
@@Aviciidoesstuff Palm oil is pretty unavoidable to some extent. It’s in EVERYTHING. However, it’s important that people learn about it and more attention is brought to the issue.
Just what I expected from an episode of SLV: new exotic destination, great food, wildlife, Rileys blood all over the place, and an existential threat to life.

Longtime ER nurse and now nursing professor here. Putting a "salve" (preferably just petroleum jelly) on the wound is great but on a wound that is that fresh and... gooey, it's also a good idea to use a non-adherent gauze pad as your first layer. I recommend the following order: wound -> petroleum jelly -> non-adherent gauze -> regular gauze -> tape or coban.

Telfa pad is non-adherent.
Super glue is fantastic. Cant count how many times super glue has let me keep working to get the job done. I actually cut myself with a broadhead for hunting the other day. Super sharp. Super glue kept the cut sealed for the past 4 or 5 days and the glue finally came off today... all healed up. Works a charm. I heard they use it in hospitals too, so that would be interesting to hear if thats true.
@@Muskiehunter92 Yup. We use cyanoacrylate to close wounds in the hospital (and other medical settings).
@@Muskiehunter92 Super glue won’t work on an avulsion type injury, only a laceration -two nice clean edges glued together.
I’ve been watching you guys from the start, bought 2 boats, sustained massive financial losses ( Covid) cruised the QLD coast for two years, come home for family reasons for 18 months, overcome PTSD from working in construction my whole life and now back to work ( construction) motivated only with the knowledge that we’re going cruising again this year. Finger; no amount of salve or cream will protect the wound from the gauze, you need to have a "Low Adherent Dressing Pads for Wounds" between the wound. So it would be in layers; wound, salve/skinbond & sterile-strips, then pad and then last is gauze. Think of the gauze as a bit fabric to wrap around and hold a dressing pad onto the wound to protect it together. You can use gauze or just medical tape, it's up to you, but what you really need is a bunch of "Low Adherent Dressing Pads for Wounds" in different sizes in your first aid box, some steri-strips & skin bond. 🙂
Agree. Also I use Streri-Strip for wound closures. I also use LiquiBond and Skin Bond for wound closures and Liquid Skin especially where you want to reduce scaring. As a rock climber I just used to use super glue, where I say split or burst a finger tip, and just generally used it for cuts even deep ones. The scars are hair thin and you really have to look hard, under strong light to see them. With proper medical glues now available for the same price use the proper stuff. Do a search for "how-do-i-care-for-a-wound-treated-with-skin-glue"

Long time subscriber, and emergency nurse here. The cream does not matter when it comes to the gauze “sticking, “ change the gauze twice a day to keep it from sticking! If you have a non-adherent gaze, you can use it until it scabs over. Non-adherent gauze is something I would recommend adding to your kit if you don’t already have it! It will allow the salve to sit without being absorbed by the gauze and prevent adherence to your skin! So happy you were able to experience the wildlife, good luck with the cut! Keep it clean, and change that bandage often, especially with the wild adventure y’all end up on!

I just spent 5 months on an island called Pom Pom in the same area! We had a 6pm - 5am* pm curfew where we couldn't be in the water or leave our property due to the increased risk of pirates. For a solid two weeks, our regular nightly turtle walks were canceled and the police were out patrolling a lot because there were reports of unidentified boats in the area! There are police or military on all the tourist islands now which has made the area safer within the last 10 years but you never know!
I thought about you guys and your journey to the Philippines since you started this Bornean journey and wondered if you had known about the "pirates"! :O. Surprised no one warned you!

Yeah, when you go north to the Philippines, you might want to follow Palawan up or stay to the middle of the Sulu Sea and not through the Sulu Islands to Zamboanga.

Be very careful about cuts in a rainforest. I nearly lost my leg from a Staph infection in Borneo about ten years ago. I made the mistake of not immediately putting an antibiotic cream on a minor gash on my leg. I had to be emergency flown back to Seattle for skin graphs.
They are clueless.

Antibiotic cream plus anti fungal, and Protozoa …betadine ointment or ventadine spray a must have on board, I’m sure you would have this tho 😊 and a good soak in saline to loosen the gauze. Paraffin gauze is the way to go, sticks better, decreases moisture loss from the wound. There is also honey gauze, hydrogel, iodine, zinc and bismuth gauze. A silicone gauze will prevent the gauze from drying into skin it comes away when you open up the dressing. All worth having while heading into the jungle. Love your show iv been watch for many years 🥰
Hi Riley, I am a surgeon (and a sailor :-). Cuts like this tend to exprime fluid all the time and a gauze was a very good idea of you guys. On top of this I recommend an antimicrobial ointment with some iodine. And regular changing of the dressing is key to avoid adherence. you can speed up healing with a little fixing support. The little - unconscious - movements hinder healing. I wish you guys all the best of health and feast recovery for Riley. Hi regarding Yr poorly finger, treating it with Betadine liquid firstly helps seal it an sterilise the cut, And steri strips or a stich depending on depth of cut, applying à non adhesive dressing eg melolin. Then the dressing you had on top of the gauze was fine. Keep it dry 7 to 10 days. Let the wound also breath when resting the finger for small periods of time after 2 days or when the wound leaves no leakage. I was in that area, on a river on the east side of Borneo, in 1984 (40 years, holy crap!). We were on a forestry department boat and we still had an escort for any night trips. We were there studying and banding migratory birds. As an FYI, we were also told not to swim (after we'd already done so) not because of crocs, but because the river was also the sewer for everyone living along it.

Some very important facts about palmoil and Borneo that almost everyone in the west is unaware about:
-The majority of forest in Borneo is not primary rainforest anymore, due to logging in the last ~200 years, it is secondary forest very poor in species and full of invasives, ecologically almost completly worthless and takes centuries to turn back into primary forest.
-The remaining primary rainforest is often far inland in remote regions and extremly important as it contains the entire biodiversity of the island and is one of the most biodiverse regions on this planet(containing about 10% of our planets species)
-At the same time palmoil is the most ressource efficient source of edible oil/fat overall and if managed correctly oil palms can be a host of many diffrent species making it ecologically much more valuable than grain farming for oil(monocultures of canola, sunflower, soybean etc.)
Now you would expect people to plant oil palm in places overgrown with invasives and worthless secondary forest, the problem is this is often not the case and instead too often primary forest and valuable ancestral food forest gets cut down and is turned into palm oil plantations due to a number of reasons.
Those are mostly bureaucratic, in a simplified explenation: it is regulation wise easier to cut down primary forests(which is often not officially recognized as someones property) insted of secondary forest, which at least after being cut is documented as some form of property and you have to buy it and meet legal regulations to make an oil palm plantation.
The second part is the wood in primary forests and ancestral food forests is very valuable, while that in secondary vegitation is usually not even worth enough to process it.
The third reason is previously logged forests usually have degraded soils and lack nutrients in the soil, which get washed out extremly quickly after logging in tropical regions like Borneo with the large amount of rainfall and heat.
If you want to protect earths biodiversity and climate the way is not to avoid palm oil, but to make sure it has been produced in a sustainable fashion in areas with secondary vegitation, also if you live in Indonesia or Malaysia, please urge your goverments to make change the laws to protect primary rainforest, while also making it easier to grow oil palm on sites with secondary vegitation.

I was fortunate to spend 6 days diving Sipadan before the kidnapping in 2000 where several people were kidnapped from Sipadan by Philippine pirates and held for ransom. Luckily the two Americans staying there at the time of the kidnapping ran into the jungle and were not kidnapped. That's just one of other incidents. While the diving at Sipadan is superb, I agree with the police that you're running the risk of being kidnapped in that area of the world.

You both should consider doing a remote area first aid course. These are really useful and the course provider will usually have access to some first aid handbooks and kit lists that are excellent to have on board. Any yacht on an ocean passage is by definition a remote area. Low adherent dressings are the start point for almost all small wounds. Duct tape works well in Hollywood but not so much in Borneo.
My mind can't comprehend how tough it must be and have been to put your lives out to the world but kudos to you. You guys are killing this game called life and I appreciate y'all. Much love❤!

Traveled to Borneo in the late '80s. Beautiful place, we traveled inland and down a river to stay with a former head hunting tribe. One head hunter was still alive and had tattoos for each head he had taken during WW2. There's a photo floating around the internet that supposedly shows the shadow of a giant anaconda swimming in a Borneo river. Glad we didn't see anything like that. Your trip brought back wonderful memories.

New can openers are knaff, we had one of my grans old ones on the boat that was basically a small blade attached to a bottle opener. Not exactly kid proof but very handy and survived my whole life (30 years!) plus however long it was knocking about before then!

For minor injuries I recommend Mepitel as a first layer. Its a breathable silicone mesh which won't let dressings stick to it. Don't believe the hype - low adherent dressings like Melolite (that are in most 1st aid kits) will still adhere to a wound, but you can just soak it off. The trouble is you will remove some of the cells that are trying to make new skin when you have to soak/rip dressing off delaying the healing process.
Manuka honey or honey packing and daily bandage changes. Boil mint oils or have minty plants for the bugs. ❤ You both are looking rested and ready for adventure. ❤

Wow - blasts from the past! In 1983 we sailed from Sandakan over to Palawan. The Sulu sea and Mindanao were well known for pirates - in fact we were warned not to travel down the East coast of Borneo past Sandakan. I was alert just watching you up the river!
We sailed across the Sulu Sea at night, turned off all radios, electronics (actually not much of that in 1983!!), no navigation lights, no engine and we whispered IF we talked. We ghosted our way across the Sea - it was eerie and a strong memory. In saying all of that we didn't ever meeta Filipino who wasn't warm and gracious. Have a wonderful time.
We parked our boat at Sandakan and on advice took a 3 day adventure package to the river. We stayed at the 'Bilit Rainforest Lodge' and did 2 tours each day from the lodge down the river and its tributaries. We had excellent guides and were lucky enough to see the big 5, namely Pygmy Elephants, Orangatangs, Proboscus Monkeys, Crocs and Hornbills. Best of all, we came back to the lodge for excellent cooked meals and the luxury of airconditioned, mosquito free rooms to sleep in for the night.
I was thinking pirates and danger the entire time you were on the river, but I choose to believe (and hope) that you are well covered in that department to protect the souls onboard. One big, beautiful flashy orange home, but also now a real flashy asset that draws all the attention. Please be careful.

You should have some non stick gauze in your first aid kit. If not , get some if you are going to keep Riley on board. :) It's great to see you all back together on the water living your dream. I have been with you for 6 years and still look forward to each release.

This was such fun to see Borneo. We lived in Indonesia for many years and always heard about adventures in Borneo. It is not often that they give warnings about dangers, so I’m glad that you listened to them. Looking forward to next week so we can see clear water again. Please stay safe.

I've said this before, and I'll say it again. I'm 69 years old and a confirmed bachelor. Never had kids, and frankly never wanted to be a father. In fact kids have always got on my nerves. But your two boys just melt my heart. You have done a wonderful job raising them. Thanks for sharing your adventures.
In 2005 and 2009 we took our children out of school (only 2 weeks early) to go to South Africa. We explored a shanty town (guided), went to Robben Island, table Mountain, Boulders beach, Stellenbosch, Addo Elephant reserve, caves and a safari. To this day they talk about those trips. So educational. What your boys are experiencing is the best education you can give them. I can't imagine either of them will end up in a office. Happy and safe travels

Sorry guys, there are no tigers on Borneo - they're extinct, like the Javan and Balinese tiger. There are a very few fragmented populations on Sumatra, but no OFFICIAL record of Borneo tigers being present for a long, long time. I spent some time on the Kinabatangan River myself (on one of my many Remote River Man expeditions), and it's very deceptive. Along the river itself, there's plenty of wildlife. But this is only because if you go two or three kilometers away from the river's edge, you'll find that the forest disappears, and there are palm plantations as far as the eye can see. The wildlife is only there because it has absolutely nowhere else to go - away from that thin ribbon of rainforest hugging the riverbank, their habitats have been largely decimated by oil palm implantations. But to tourists on a boat along the river, the illusion of wildlife-rich jungle remains. Pretty sad.

NON STICK GAUZE. Seriously, its a game changer. All deep open wounds. Once it scabs over normal gauze is fine. This is from someone that scrapped his knee cap off and for 2 weeks had to cover it.
