Watching your boat surfing down the waves was unbelievable . Nobody has dared to put out a drone in conditions like that . The footage is so humbling .

If you haven't surfed down large waves you don't know how exhilarating it is, although, to be honest, I did it in my early 20's in an unsinkable boat. (a Tempest) with no children on board,) However, the DASHEW line of luxury yachts were designed to be both super safe and AND to surf. That is the best way to avoid or escape from heavy weather.. This is a highly valuable and instructional episode.

A similar sea achor saved us in a Cat 1 hurricane. I can't imagine having to go through something like that with little kids on board. Impressive how you both kept your serenity through the challenge. You offered your viewers great advice.
The mental toll of sailing with children has to be enormous. Being constantly vigilant about keeping them safe from going overboard as their motor skills increase would keep me awake.
I have to say your drone footage is without a doubt the best video depicting a small catamaran in big waves I've seen. Knowing first-hand what it's like, it's tough to describe and pictures never do it justice, this comes as close as you could ask for without wearing 3D glasses. Bravo, and keep up the good work!

Hello Ed, Kids like Willa and Bodhi are small humans so they look to see if their parents are acting scared. If the Parents are not worried or are acting like they aren't worried, the kids think it's normal. They are also very good at adapting to whatever conditions their Parents are in. If Ben and Ashley were yelling at each other, both kids would be crying. :) Cheers from BC.

@@dansbrown1313 lol I get it. Toddlers always amaze me how adaptive there are despite how some parents love their kids so much they get bubble wrapped then learn not to be adaptive later in life and have a lot of irrational fears. Gives you an idea how much being a good parent makes a difference.
Personally I think it's a great achievement for anybody to do what they've done,but my own belief is NOT with 2 small children. I think it's irresponsible,these children don't have a say.
Yes they are well cared for and looked after but that's just my opinion. But well done either way.

The confidence that you have in your sailing is remarkable. Looking at those waves gives me chills and to even think to have my children on the boat. I can't even imagine. No judgment.
It dawned on me how many broken hearts there would be if something were to happen to you guys! Not something I wanted to think about in this moment. Please be so very careful, as I know you already are and don't need me to tell you. I just can't help myself. This was some scary stuff! The kids handled it like pro's and I'm so impressed! You not only made beautiful babies but you made sea worthy babies and this is no joke! Good job! Whew! I don't know about the rest of you but I'm exhausted!
It's rare to see video of yachts in big seas. Great photography. We can really understand what the ocean is like. Your children will make great sailors as they are at home on the oceans of the world.

Your respect for the power of the sea, continuing learning how to live on it and the lessons you teach makes you my favourite sailing channel along with Nandji 2. Both couples hard working together. We can see the love of what you do and why so profoundly in your videos. Thankyou.
Here in Chile, we have strong south winds all summer, and it is normal for it to exceed thirty knots, which adds to the wave of the Humboldt Current, because we are used to sailing in severe weather.
What we have learned is that when sailing downwind, speed is your ally, the faster you go, the less chance of a wave breaking on your stern. To keep the speed high, the worst course is to sail at 180º of the wind, my favorite is to sail at 135º or 140º of the wind, which helps to go fast and safe, and always with enough sail to maintain a good speed. Of course, sometimes "enough sail" means carrying three reefs in the main and a small storm jib in the bow.
Sorry but I really disagree with what you're suggesting.
I've sailed through Bass Straight quite a few times with major storms of 60-70knot winds and huge seas.
If we were travelling at speed and a rouge wave hit us, no doubt we'd be spun around then fall off the top of a wave sideways.
It's not nice when your mast hits the water before your hull.
In strong winds control and time to react is the key, speed is not your friend in high seas.
@@user-hv8ir2ef6r I admit that I have never sailed downwind in winds of more than fifty knots, so surely you are right when it comes to winds of 60 or 70 knots. In winds of that power, I think I would take the boat without sails (In Spanish we say "a palo seco"). However, I have been surfing breaking waves over ten meters (thirty-three feet) between Valdivia and Juan Fernandez Island, but they were only blowing thirty-five to forty knots. It has never happened to me that my mast hits the water before the hull, I like to have the mast pointing somewhere in the sky.
Maybe a few point off either side of dead down wind might improve the ride.
Awesome conditions there Ben, Ashley looks like she could use a holiday on land, and the kids I fear they may have grown gills!

I follow three channels of couples sailing with their small children, (four if I count the one with grown children. Yes, I love this type of channel! they're very healing to the mind.) ... Wouldn't it be sweet if at some point the three of you (Nahoa, Vagabond and Delos) in the near future met for a "children's palooza" in some nice island somewhere, and these kids grew up thinking of each other as peers, staying in touch and meeting every so often ? - A Huge Hug from Italy! and THANKS for all the work you guys share with us!

You gain experience when you make mistakes......Experience stops you from making mistakes! I loved the video, brought back memories of sailing across the Atlantic, Thank You, take care.
Having done thousands and thousands of miles of offshore sailing and racing, one thing I can tell you is you have to learn to surf the boat. Cats don't surf like mono hulls do, they tend to carve off to one side and then get slapped by the next wave, rinse and repeat ad nauseum. Mono hulls will surf, accelerate like a sports car, then plow into the wave in front, you get a huge wall of water blasted at you from what feels like a fire hose, then they'll punch out of the wave, pick up the next one, and do the same thing. The problem it looked like you had was that you were out of sync with the wave train, you said it yourself, and in order to do that, the best way is to take the boat off autopilot and hand steer for a while. It's tiring, but it'll smooth the ride out and help the boat through the wave train.

When things get dicey, I never find myself worrying about myself, but rather my wife Kim and our furry crew members, charlie and TiKi. I can’t imagine having small children and the associated stress. Great segment.

Well done during that tremendous period of waves. If you have a similar occasion that you need to deploy a drogue- rather than the large knot of warp ,use the whole warp in a loop-the drag is immense as all of the warp is working against the pressure rather than just that knot and single line drag. Increasing the loop will automatically increase the drag.
You'll have a very seasoned crew by the time you complete the circumnavigation

A loop is apparently a good idea, with a single line, putting in knots every so often would help.
Of course if you really wish to slow down safely you need a Jordan drogue, surprised they do to seem to have one.
Of course it was not all that windy, certainly no Storm, otherwise you would be running under bare poles.

It’s awesome to see this because everyone loves to show the good times and not what can really happen like this. I have really been wanting to start sailing but this is what scares me the most. I think the reality of knowing that if something happens no one is there to save you, that’s what really scares me.

Boy, this brings back memories. When we with our small kids were sailing off the North Shore of Oahu and we ran into 15 foot breaking waves. We had to turn back , the video never shows how huge these waves really are. I’m sure happy you guys are OK. God bless.

Wow. Wish I could say I hadn’t dealt with seas like that but I have. Had my first boat sink story when I was 8. Not my fault lol.
If you've not already ready it , I recommend Lin and Larry Pardey's Storm Tactics Handbook. It's mainly for mono hulls but there is also advice for multi hull sailors. It's all about heaving-to with a para anchor and using the slick created by the anchor and the hull to encourage dangerous waves to break before they hit the boat. Essential reading IMHO.

This is the first time I ever saw your video of your travels across the sea. It’s amazing to see how a family lives on the unpredictable seas and their emotions with the changes of weather and how you managed your way through rough waters. I probably would have been sea sick more times then you can count 😂…. Your calmness as parents of being calm cool and collected is what makes your experience that much easier…once panic sets in you my as well call it the day. It's a Sail Fish not a Marlin and even though it's a smaller one they don't grow as big as Marlin and have a slimmer body. Really a great looking fish

I can fully understand your quest for blue sea sailing, but I think there's huge and unnecessary risk to children which I think is poor and in my view selfish.
Here we go again. When we were kids there were no airbags my first car didn’t have seat belts. We rode in the back of truck everywhere we went. Kids of my generation grew up tough as nails. We even got spankings with paddles at School. Yeah my Generation is probably the last of the real Men. We were taught God Family and Community. My Grandfather once took me on a similar trip he’s gone now but I still remember and cherish these memories as a child. I have Grandchildren approximately the age of these two and they love going on it.
@@jeffmurphy9987yes, but its still unecesary risk the same way there is helmets for bikes and you arent going to take a 5 year old on the highway on the back of one...if it was choppy and you left port with a kid people would call you mad but being in the middle of the ocean with unpredictable weather is seen as ok
Plus the kids are always with their parents and not developing with other people like kids at school would its a bit unfair in that sense also and i like this channel

Inspiration plus the kiddos. Sitting here at my office desk counting the days until my boat charter in Antigua next month. Getting sea miles in little by little, trip by trip, plus local sailing in PNW. You two are a rock star couple. Wow!

Often when I'm watching y'all or other sailing channels, I think of times I've been out in rough weather where I've hit the ceiling hit the floor hit the ceiling etc and I worry about y'all and especially the kiddos. Amazing video Ben & Ashley. One of the Best. Seas catch up to you when you cannot stay with a breaker. We have an Inlet here on the Eastern Seaboard of the U. S. where many boats are buried for that reason. Ocean waters meet Bay waters. New Captains don’t know to come into the Inlet at the proper speed and get Swamped and sunk immediately.

5 of us sailed across the Gulf from New Orleans to the southern tip of the keys . We were in a bad storm -20 foot seas . We were fortunate they were following seas . We suffered a knock down but survived it.
We are in the NE of Brazil for kiteboarding and the wind is consistently 25 - 40 knots onshore! Glad you made it through another storm and at this point, I'm sure you've completed the circumnavigation. Congrats!

Don’t know where you actually are now but Grenada and the E Caribbean is some of the best sailing in the world. Very few actual thunderstorms. You will get rain squalls. Great for filling your tanks. Now the Bahamas, yes indeed can brew some nasty T-storms. Supercells with lots of lightning, hail, sheeting rain, micro-bursts to 90 kts. Yeah. Been through many. Change of season best for Bahamas. Wow very impressive video. Amazing shots, music, story, everything. Looks scary enough for adult sailors, kudos to you for doing it with little ones. It’s is undeniably admirable what you do and how you are able to keep your cool. Kudos to all four of you! And Ben’s words hold so much depth and truth in them. I wrote them down. Definitely worth quoting. We’ve been through storms too, in the Atlantic Ocean and in even worse in the Mediterranean Sea so I wish I could frame those words and put them up somewhere on our own floating home as a reminder or as some sort of comfort blanket. Actually, that would make a great blanket: the drone shot of your cat bouncing on that wild ocean with those words printed on it! I’d definitely buy it!!

I just stumbled across your storm episode. Amazing to watch and listen to your views. Huge kudos for doing this with 2 young children as well. Epic early years for them
What a great picture lesson for life. You just have to brace yourself and do what you can to make it through the storm. This too shall pass and calmer waters are ahead❤️
It's particularly challenging when a storm hits at night due to limited visibility, making it difficult to assess the surroundings and make necessary adjustments to find a safer route. I've experienced this type of weather condition before, and it can be quite stressful to deal with.
I only saw your video now, overlooking a calm sea from the terrace of my house on the coast of Brazil and could not stop in my mind being impressed by your seamanship, the choice of your boat, your advice to other sailors and your competence as a videographer.
And that acknowledgement comes from somebody, who has helped a friend to sail his newly bought St. Francis 44 Catamaran from Cape Town via St. Helena to Paraty, Brazil and who had sailed his Gemini 105 in a cruise of 7 months from Crosshaven, Ireland, to the same Paraty. However, on both trips I had not encountered the heavy weather you did.
You should have stopped there for some time, like many people, coming from South Africa, do, because, at least for me, the area between Paraty and Cabo Frio is the most beautiful of all in Brazil.
So, on your next circumnavigation, you MUST come to Brazil.
