Daemon's silent and angry reaction to the letter causing the Velaryon soldiers to think that they weren't getting help was hilarious to me
Daemon’s reaction tricked me too!🤣 I was like “Didn’t viserys decide to give him aid? Isn’t this a good thing? Why is he beating up a poor soldier all of a sudden?”. Little did I know Daemon would rather have himself killed than give Viserys the credit for the war😭
@@kryyl I feel like Daemons pride was hurt that his big brother was trying to bail him out so he get super pissed about it. The whole point of the war was to remove the crab feeder and prove themselves. You can’t prove yourself if your get helped out by big bro.
@@Augustus0802 That’s true! This only occurred to me after watching the episode. If daemon didn’t win the war in his terms (with no help from anybody in order to prove himself to viserys), then there’s no point to him winning.
I didn’t realize daemon was Valyrian for big baby

I liked the imagery that paralleled Rhaenyra coming back with the dead boar and Daemon coming back with the dead Crabfeeder.

Paddy Considine was outstanding in this episode, you could just feel the pressure and pain he was going through, what an incredible actor. fantastic performance.
yup if i was the director id be like "no notes: keep doing what youre doing cos its fire"
I was saying the same thing! He’s really done a fantastic job!
He really stole every scene
He's been doing great work on UK TV and film for years. Glad he's getting international recognition now.
Viserys?
The fact that during this episode (EDIT: scene) Daemon did not utter a single world is a great testament to Matt Smith's artistic abilities. He nailed it.
He spoke at the very beginning of the episode. He called for the Crabfeeder to come out of his hole, remember? 😉 But it was a brief line, so it's easy to see why people forgot about it. Nevertheless, his scene at the end was speechless. Literally & figuratively. It took my breath away, I was sitting on the edge of my couch freaking out. I'm a hitter when I get excited, and I was literally smacking my husband's leg & shouting "COME ON DAEMON COME ON, YOU CAN DO IT, KILL THAT POXY BASTARD" 😤🤣 lmaooo
He did at the beginning, but not at the end.
He had 2 lines at the start but the point holds. I love when he walked in whilst being insulted and he just straight up ignored Corlys Velaryon's brother and stared down all the soldiers, not a word was mentioned but you could see the visible weariness in them and how fed up they were. His stare solidified their loyalty out of fear through facial and body expression alone.
Daemon makes Ramsay Bolton look so polite and kind in comparison. Daemon truly is one of the most evil characters I have seen!!! 😱
@@costco_pizza How is Daemon comparable with Ramsay Bolton. Ramsay Bolton is cruel for the sake of cruelty and because of his enjoyment of torturing people. Daemon is just a very ambitious man who is pragmatic in his choices. Sometimes his emotions just take over which makes him unpredictable and dangerous, but not necessarily a bad person.
I can't believe you didn't add the legendary line when talking about Viserys
'' That man's pride has pride ''
Especially considering he's a Lannister/Lion.
That line just felt sooo much GOT in it
That was hilarious 😂😂
To me, the battle in this episode just felt like a warmup, and I have a feeling they’re saving their budget for bigger battles down the road. I did however, love the fact that we only got to see Daemon dragging the crab feeder’s corpse out of the cave, I thought it was very powerful.
Yep, they could've done the GoT trick of not showing the battle and I would've been satisfied with Daemon dragging the crab feeder
Off topic but love ur pfp
I'm expecting them to be saving budget on the final battles as like the dance of dragons as we will see so many dragons at once
@@TheBNCyo People would complain a lot if they did that...
That moment when all the crab people went outside is GOT season 8 bullshit, no logic there.
Imo that opening of episode 3 was the most hilarious opening of all GoT series: the soldier was so excited about Daemon’s arrival, tried to scrape every second he could take before being eaten alive by the crabs, all of it just to get smacked by a giant leg of someone who didn’t even know about your existence. That’s allegory to life and how your excitement might be crushed by reality.
This kind of scenes we need, deep af.
no its about how the elites that run everything dont give a shit about the people beneath them.
It illustrated that nearly all combatants in war are cannon fodder, no matter how much they believe in the cause. I liked it. I'd be honoured to be squashed by a dragon honestly. Kind of like the trex in Jurassic Park.
For me it was kinda morbid and scary, to think how humans are literally ants to dragons. He probably didn't intend on stepping on him since he didn't see him but he probably didn't even feel that man beneath his foot after crushing him. Who knows how many ants we kill the same way while they are just living their life. And for sure dragons burn to a crisp dozens of the Kingdom's soldiers every time they attack enemies with fire
i dont understand why everyone is expecting all archers in fiction to be like hawkeye or green arrow even in medieval times of all. its a hard shot ; trying to hit a stable target across a field is hard enough not to talk of one moving at a bloodthirsty pace
I dont know, I think its more that they are shooting in volleys like you do in war rather than actually aiming. Cause if you aim that, at least a few archers are hitting per volley. Still, he was zig zagging and taking some cover at times so it makes sense he avoided them.
For real lmao. I dont think people understand how hard it is for archers to hit a moving target.
Yeah man, and if you look closely the archers are not that many.. so the chances of hitting a fast moving target suddenly stopping to attack some soldiers or to take cover was very slim..
People are expecting all archers are like the archers of the Persian Empire in 300.. too vast and many they can blot out the sun...haha
@Glirion I shot bows 3 years ago, you wont outrun a volley of well put 30 arrows at once and in sequence lol, why is wearing armor if the arrows penetrate it? Is just dumb
@@AuroraBoost actually, skilled archers back the could very easily hit moving targets. People complaining about daemons plot armour have a very valid point. The only way it’s even conceivable for a man to run through a field of arrows like that is if the archers literally picked up archery the day before.
Think of the mongols, Comanche, samurais, nubians in ancient history. Men so deadly with the bow and arrow they could hit a target dead on while riding a horse in the midst of battle.
Hitting a moving target is nothing to a decent archer.
Fans when rudimentary wooden arrows from half a mile away don't head-shot Daemon instantly while he's running through rubble, wind, and cover: 😡😡😡
Well it still was a bit convenient for him that the arrows always missed him by some meters while he was running. I mean when 20 people shoot arrows on a person multiple times the probability to hit him is still high. Especially as they have the high ground.
I dont understand the obsession with the arrow shit. Like you are watching a fantasy show with Gods, destiny, sorcery, dragons, etc. So you have a problem with battle of the bastards because a bunch of arrows missed a dude with a destiny written ages ago. lol Getting hung up on hyper realism in a fantasy tv show is beyond the stupidest thing ever. You in the wrong genre if these are your issues.
@@CulperCast - Exaaactly 🤷🏻♀️🙄💯
@@CulperCast the appeal of got and hotd for me ( and what a lot of people are looking for in these series ) is realism set in a fantasy world. This isnt lord of the rings or something like that, characters die or survive in logical or at least plausible ways. This was a bad way of making Damon survive in my opinion, plot armor to its fullest extent .
They are probably just over analysing because of the bitter taste that the battle of the bastards left in their mouths.
I dont think Daemon running through the barage of arrows is that unbelievable to be honest. They're bows and arrows, not snipers with laserpointers, and they're carried by pirates and outlaws who you imagine don't get the highest quality training. Plus, he's running at full sprint while theres other pirates on the field they probably don't want to hit as well, on an small island where theres likely to be a fair bit of oceanic wind. In the end he got hit three times in what, a 50 meter sprint or so? Seems like a fair hit-ratio to me, certainly not plot armour.
finally, someone who understands statistics rather than just screaming plot armor about everything
Not to mention something they visually set up for anyone watching, there are broken ships everywhere he's using for cover.
Exactly! Arrows are not bullets, bows are not rifles with scopes.
The reason we use guns today is because they're far more effective than a bow and arrow. If all were equal, no one would be buying guns and everyone would save money by making their own bow and arrow.
You're right. Archery is not easy, and they are a long way away from a small, moving target. Now, if that were Euron and Ramsey up on the cliff side, then of course every single arrow they fired would have hit Daemon in the neck.
@First Name Last Name what? 💀
One thing we should take into consideration,, daemon removed all of his armour and his valeryan steel helmet, so that he can zig zag quickly through the field, while rest of his army is in full armor with helmets, he at least had some kinda of plan
Literally the biggest flaw of this action scene - he somehow forgot to wear any armor, knowing dozens of archers will try to kill him. Good plan
@@Averageenjoyer-br1zm He didn't forget. He deliberately did it to give him more speed. Daemon's not exactly the smartest guy anyway
@@hunterhorsehelmsley7315 Proper armor barely slows you down yet provides great protection against regular bows. Not wearing it was stupid.
@@Averageenjoyer-br1zm When you are going on a suicide run you rarely consider bringing protection
@@hunterhorsehelmsley7315 yeah, sacrificing your ability to tank arrows for +5% speed boost is smart asf. If you go to a shoot out, do not wear bullet proof west, try dodging bullets instead
2:29 Fantastic point there. I've seen a lot of people criticizing Daemon being overpowered in that scene but the fact is he does indeed make an effort to keep himself protected and he literally ends up shot and surrounded anyway. Another thing to keep in mind is that Daemon walked into the crabfeeder's territory for the sole purpose of drawing him and his men out to end the war. I believe that after he read that letter, he stopped caring about the outcome for him personally, and he put his life on the line without a second thought, all so that Viserys doesn't get to claim any part in the victory he strived to achieve.
Most people claiming he has plotarmor there think that these soldiers are fucking Hawkeye
It's gotten pretty normalized for people wielding bows in TV shows to shoot it with the precision of a modern Elite Sniper, but in reality it was just spray and pray.
Modern Soldiers with actual Assault Rifles aren't able to hit a running target at that distance.
I agree I feel when he read the letter he wanted to end the war as quickly as possible without his brothers help. Kinda like his pride was on the line and that was what lead to a reckless but worth while tactic.
Hitting an army with a volley is easy but one man running full tilt from that distance is pretty difficult.
I only wished they had faked out the Crab feeder by sending a small group to save Daemon and pull him back. Crab feeders sends his army to counter after checking again for dragons. Then the full Valeryon arm cuts down the now exposed men.
There was no reason to send a whole army to get an injured Daemon and a small change would make sense even if they made the plan on the fly after Daemons mad rush.
@@Goetterkomplex_ dozens of soldiers with modern life assault rifles would hit a moving target at that distance in a matter of seconds…. I have no idea where you’re getting this idea that either the weapons, or the men trained to fire them are this inaccurate.
@@pedroaldrete2994 Nope. They absolutely wouldn't.
US Army Soldiers, who are among the best trained in the world reach a 30% accuracy rate on stationary targets at 300m. And that is when you're calmly aiming with zero pressure.
Practically speaking, in range-unknown shooting and especially in combat, actual accuracy gets absolutely terrible beyond about 100 meters. Shooting on a range and shooting on fleeting targets that are moving quickly are different.
On a fast moving target easily 500m away like Daemon here, there is not a single Soldier in the world that can hit that with accuracy. Not only because of human error but because our weapons straight up *can't*.
Upper range for most Assault Rifles is ~300-400m since that's when when the bullet slows down enough to go from supersonic to transonic; When that happens, it begins to tumble through the air and becomes completely inaccurate.
Tl;dr: No modern soldiers with the exception of Snipers would be able to hit Daemon except through dumb luck
In only 3 episode, Daemon Targaryen has done more badass stuff than any of the other characters in the last two seasons of Game of Thrones.
Jon snow beating the piss out of ramsay whole covered in blood was pretty bad ass

Daemon is really becoming my favourite character and Matt Smith portrays him more than perfectly.
I really like the show. It doesn't feel as intimate as the first few seasons of game of thrones because how fast things are moving and also how quickly things have escalated. My favourite part of the show is the conflict between Daemon and Otto. In my opinion Matt Smith and Rhys Ifans are by far the best part of the show.
It will slow down once we get to season 2, it just has to go at this pace initially because that's how the source material is.

It's just something that I've noticed.
@@AVerySillySausage honestly Paddy stepped up this episode as well.
Well the first 3 episodes of season 1 of game of thrones happened in the span of around 3-6 months and by the time the season finale happened it had already been a year or two
It doesn't feel as dense either. I loved rewatching GoT early seasons over and over. Each time catching bits I had missed. Ive rewatched a few HotD but there isnt too much rewatch value. Its very spare and easy to take in all in one go. Fewer characters, and just doesnt feel as immersive.

Daemon Targaryen is an absolute legend. Slay me dragon rider. Matt Smith is nailing his performance. Give this man all the love and appreciation in the world.
My guy literally went beast mode out of pure SPITE. Legend behavior
I think the arrows scene is rectified simply by him eventually being hit, I can believe that he might outrun them for a while, but not entirely, so the fact that they eventually hit him makes the scene perfectly fine imo, although on a first watch I was very worried about the fact that he seems to have "End of GoT" level plot armour

And he got hit when he stayed stationary...
I loved the fact that the Crabfeeder's death was off-screen. Everything this show is doing to show us just what a fascinating character Daemon is is fantastic. We didn't need to see some fancy fight between the two of them. Its Daemon we're talking about. A legendary fighter, arguably the best of his era, wielding an equally legendary sword. The fight probably ended in one swing of Darksister, and the fact that its portrayed as though it weren't even worth watching really played into just how dangerous Daemon truly is.

@@mourdinethesaharabian4298 it was not even much of a clean kill.
I really like Rhaenyra and Daemon. Not characters to mess with.
That stag kill was fairly gruesome as he left it in pain as after the first hit. The white stag appeared to Rhaenyra.
I’d always assumed that the lord of light was protecting Jon. It would’ve been a cool idea if he had any purpose in s8.
Same 🤷🏻♀️😕 We were led to believe he was special. "The Prince That Was Promised, Who Would Bring the Dawn", and all that. I guess D&D his 19yr old little sister could do better...

At this time in the story, Daemon has to be twenty-five or so. His attitude and actions during the Stepstones conflict are in line for his character.
I think he's in his early thirties at this point. He's about sixteen years older than Rhaenyra
@@delightfulmochas Well, he's forty-five during the Battle above the God's Eye. Aemon, who is currently in his mother's womb, is twenty during the same duel. I know the show may change it, but I thinks it helps in showing Daemon's growth over time.

I was waiting for your review in particular, I'm glad you adressed Daemon's plot armor in the Stepstones battle, which is something that bothered me and I didn't see any other channel bring it up. Also, how come none of the triarchy men spotted their army approaching the island? I guess I might be demanding too much, but thats what the late seasons of GOT did to me. Btw, really enjoy your channel.
Thanks! That was one other thing that bothered me that I didn't bring up, but surely all the archers who have a high vantage point would have spotted an approaching fleet.
thing is, you have basically the leader of the opposite faction, that has been killig your buds by dozens on top of his dragon, that comes alone, without a full armor, and with a white flag to "apparently" surrender (low key Daemon did a war crime).
If I was fighting in this faction I would keep my eyes on him. One because it would give me satisfaction to see the bastard nailed on the beach and given to crabs, two because I know he's dangerous and I don't want him to do anything that would lead to further death in my friends.
Daemon was the perfect bait, especially since they established there was a personnal conflict between him and the crab feeder in the begenning of the episode.

What the hell man, i'm so invested in HOTD. It's so good. The actors are doing an incredible job accross the board, unbelieveble stuff. Wasn't expecting for it to be so goddamn good. It's almost giving me anxiety that it could go bad as GOT did. Viserys character is fantastic, and i'm still shocked about the scene of the dragon stepping on the poor soldier lol!
I was more impressed with the Kings hunt portion of this episode.
Viserys’ scenes were killer. He really demonstrates that while maybe he’s a “weak” king, he’s not a weak man. I loved him testing Lannister.
We have to give special credit to the writters for writing strong ORIGINAL dialogue, unlike D&D who copied dialogues from the books in the first four seasons of GOT. It might not yet be as strong as George RR Martin's dialogue, but it is strong enough to point that the writters are inspired by his writing, and as the shows progresses, so does the quality of the dialogue. Ryan Condal said George's writing style was a huge inspiration for him, and boy it is.
At first I was pleasantly surprised at the writing, pacing and acting in HOTD...but now I'm amazed at how good this show is so far. My expectations were below sea level after the last season of GoT but goddamn was it nice to be wrong about this series.
same.
Paddy Considine is really doing a great job playing Viserys. He's the ideal king for peaceful times who doesn't like conflict and just wishes everyone could live happily without always needing to fight for power. But, unfortunately, the real world has other plans.
The action this episode itself was cool, but they should've thought of a better way to have Daemon avoid all the arrows instead of avoiding like 97/100 arrows that come his way in the open. They could've had him dive into a nearby structure to avoid the first volley (like the one they had him take cover in after he got hit), then the remainder of the army shows up and turns the archers' attention away, at which point Daemon emerges and cuts his way to the Crabfeeder like he does in the show.
Also it seems weird that the entirety of the Crabfeeder's army would show up to accept Daemon's surrender when they're clearly exposing themselves to dragon fire. Would've been nice if there was more back-and-forth for strategic plays between Daemon and the Crabfeeder. It ended up feeling very rushed.
Would you really have preferred 3 episodes of fighting the crab feeder? How it went was well executed they fought for 3 years and Daemon ended the fighting to avoid insult by being helped by the crown.
Or he could have just carried a shield
I think maybe the issue was that they wanted to put this at the end of this episode so there wasn't much more time to carefully develope the battle scene, at least to me it felt a bit rushed. Foreshadowing the battle and showing it in the next episode would have given them more time to set it up and make it less confusing to watch. First time watching the scene I was really wondering what was going on but after rewatching it and reading some comments on the episode it made much more sense to me. I think, if the show had established this understanding by itself, a lot of confusion about the scene could have been avoided...

He most definitely is, although he had some Jon Snow Battle of the Bastards-level plot armor in the last episodes. Dude was taking arrows like they were nothing.
I think it’s a little different because Daemon was wearing armour (or at least it looked like he was wearing amour at the beginning with Caraxes) but in the battle of the bastards Jon Snow wasn’t really wearing any

Loved this! Always waiting for your video.
Daemons ancestor had the same problem in dorne. They would run back in the caves and wait for the dragons to leave goes to show how creative of a military tactician daemon is.
The thing is, the easiest ways to get people hiding in caves out of the cave is with smoke and fire. When they go inside there caves, all they in reality need to do is build fires in around the entrance and fill the caves with smoke, the people inside will lose oxygen fast and the smoke will have draw them out, but the dragon has a long neck it should be able to poke its head in and unleash fire pretty deep into those caves. They had the best things to deal with an enemie that would hide in a cave, yet the show made it seem like they had no options and it wasnt like that. In reality and back then, thats how they would get people hiding inside caves out they would smoke it out. Indians did this, it was done to indians, but its been used by many cultures throughout most of history.
The way I read that scene was that the cave system was so large that it wouldn't matter if a dragon literally blew fire directly into the cave, the pirates could just move deeper, not to mention that you can see multiple entrances just in the battle scene alone.
@@OsaculnenolajO Yep
For real, I almost cried at Viserys' monologue in the bonfire. It makes you think how the throne is actually a curse, no one in this show or GOT has had a good life while being on the throne. It feels like if Aegon cursed it when he made it from the swords of his enemies because no one should be comfortable in it. Viserys is one of the most complex characters in this universe.
I had the exact same though process up until he got hit, and did think he was at least making any sort of effort to take cover from the arrows. Brilliant episode tho

Doesn't even feel like I'm watching a tv show at this point. Just a really freaking long continuous movie saga. It's insane. I do miss the charm of the early GoT seasons where they didn't have the budget so instead leaned on the dialogue and politicking admittedly, but this has been a great watch so far.
This is the first review that I have seen that got Daemon motivation in my eyes right in this episode

Matt Smith lost his father while he was on set for HOTD. He was devastated. But he pulled himself together and got back on set to give us this amazing performance that we are witnessing every week. I always loved Matt as an actor but now i love and respect him more.
How tf can daemon be this charismatic

That completely made me started to love daemon. Wonderful high quality episode. AGAIN.
To be honest, Otto Hightower advice was not that stupid, if Aegon marry Rhaenyra it will "kill" any questioning about Aegon being the king because he basically marry the heir queen to the Throne, and kinda a union to keep Rhaenyra and Aegon in the sucession without a war or conflict.
(but some people doubts are that Aegon will just be consort if he marry Rhaenyra)
But it just a way that Otto to prevent Civil War, (some Hightower tradition to like with trading and diplomacy rather than war maybe involve), but it seems like Otto will not like a civil war that could treathen the future of his house if a questioning of succesion happen.
Basically Otto want a soft road to the future even if was kinda limited his house power.
Daemon lashed out when he got the news from his Brother's aid because he was frustrated for 2 years that his brother paid no mind to it. He just wanted a little attention and finally got it.
I generally agree with you but my main thing was that: Crab Feeder is a smart dude who cannot fight. Why send your whole army to capture a dude who has been shot by 3 arrows while knowing that there can be dragon nearby. That mistake felt forced to me.

I was surprised about Laenor Velaryon, he show some leadership skills and determination, never imagined he will be like this.
Yeah, it was his idea.
@@awesimo4684 Yeah, while I was reading books I got impression that he is more emotional and insecure.
The show is getting better and better
Obsesssssed with this series so far. Daemon is an absolute beast. Love your videos dude... thank you!! Loved the scene of Rhaenyra walking back into camp. Did you notice the dipsh*t Lanister twin giving her the "eww.. nevernind.." face when he saw her covered in blood?.. vs the other hot guy in camp looking at her like "...oh yeah that's a hot warrior queen rt there". Loved that moment too. Did you get to see the oops of the green screen fingers when Vicerys was receiving a message? Can't wait for the next episode & videos!!!!
First off, absolutely love your channel and the way you breakdown content.
Secondly, I'm surprised you didn't mention the scene with the White Hart presenting itself to Rhaenyra. The symbolism was very well delivered by the writers for those keen to the story. She is the true heir, which makes what happens later in the story all the more tragic.
I think the thing that is the worst part about Daemon's suicide charge is that just a few relatively minor changes would've eliminated any criticisms of plot armor because, unlike the Battle of the Bastards, the setup for Daemon surviving the fight is not completely implausible like it was for Jon.
1. Give a POV shot of the archers while Daemon is running in order to demonstrate how small of a target he is and how hard it is to hit him while he's running horizontally to the archers. Also, don't show so many arrows whizzing right past Daemon, which will further demonstrate the inaccuracy of the archers.
2. Have Daemon hide behind cover each time a volley of arrows comes his way and only then fight the Crabfeeder's men and/or have him pick up a shield from one of the Crabfeeder's men to help protect himself from the arrows. Also, don't have the Crabfeeder's men come at him one at a time.
3. Establish how the Velaryons are able to sneak up on the Crabfeeder's forces and why the Crabfeeder would send out his entire forces to kill Daemon (and don't have the Crabfeeder's men just surround Daemon but not attack him).
Yyyyyes! I can already see if they had done all three of what you suggested, the battle would be much more grounded, especially with a POV shot of the archers!
Fr people don’t understand arrows aren’t guns and are not at all accurate especially from distance
That would help, but there are many more issues with that battle sequence. Maybe If you extended that list to 10 points.
@@milanhvozdik3379 What other issues do you think there are?
@@wayothefro3249 I overreacted a bit, those 3 pretty much cover most of it
Making this comment to address all the stupid plot armor talk about Daemon so here goes:
He sent his troops out in waves, as to not have them totally obliterated by dragons. Each time he sent them, it was a test to see if the dragons would come. After many waves he thought Daemon truly was alone and sent the bulk of his forces. Even that makes sense, since each dragon only has one rider, taking out Daemon equates to taking out a dragon. Daemon's dragon caraxes is the greatest weapon on the opposing side, far bigger and more powerful than the other one. If they kill him they likely win the war before Viserys' forces ever arrive. It was a necessary risk. The the arrow part also makes perfect sense. No matter the skill of the archers, it's impossibly hard to have everyone, or even ONE, accurately hit a fast moving target, hundreds of feet away who is in full armor, and using cover. Archer volleys are only really effective when used against massive forces, because there's simply more targets to hit. When there's only a single target, that is moving, they're lucky to hit any. And they managed to hit him three times at least and boxed him into a corner. This is a more accurate archery display in medieval media than is common.
Cheers
It was necessary risk to send all infantry into the open to surround and not attack one wounded dude that you need killed? One more small group that would actually do something would be enough. Also, agree that hitting him with arrows would be hard, but he dodged 9 volleys and arrows were shown to be landing quite tightly packed all around him. That was just too much. And when they finally hit him, they penetrated his chest plate for some reason and he just brushed it off like nothing. They could show how that plate deflects some arrows during running scenes, on at leas one hit him during that time to the shoulder or something or actually display how hard it is to hit him from archer perspective and everything would be fine. And how did the army teleport there without anyone noticing when trebuchetting passing boats is literally the whole purpose of crabfeeders? They sure had to have some people that can see ships coming towards them. And how is the one archer focusing on Daemon the only one noticing a dragon just when it is too late? Was it in stealth the whole time? No scouts whatsoever. How was that band of incompetents able to survive years of war if they were this dim. This battle was all kinds of stupid. It reminded me of last few seasons of GoT. Which is understandable, since the guy that mishandled battles there is of the show runners now.
@@milanhvozdik3379 The only real issue to me is like you said, how did no one notice the approaching army. Albeit that's a pretty big issue. The archery, again, makes sense. We don't need a view showing how hard it is for the archers, people should already know that. And clearly the previous wave strategy wasn't working so crab feeder is like fuck it, get em boys. The battle scene isn't perfect, but it's getting bashed way more than is deserved for a 3 minute battle scene that was really more a Daemon character building moment than anything.
@@nnatz-6810 well it's a stark contrast with the rest of the show and the rest of the episode as well, that went pretty consistently without many wtf moments. If I wasn't invested I wouldn't care that much.
@@nnatz-6810 so crabfeeder sending the whole army instead of 10 guys to kill daemon wasnt an issue? Also crabfeeder was doing an attrition warfare and he was clearly winning as you see in the war counsel scene with velaryons.Whole battle scene was straight out of a kids show really and was extremly contrived
Daemon's gauntlet run was epic. Glad he got hit by arrows which removed whatever plot armor he had. It was a good battle and I'm looking forward for more. Paddy Considine is awesome playing a king with so much of the weight of the world on his shoulders.
That scene in front of the fire is my favorite moment hands down, amazing acting
I really liked the episode as well. Viserys and Daemon took center stage, Rhaenyra was a bit on the annoying side with her pouting, though it was understandable. I kept waiting for her to have a proper conversation with Alicent but I guess that can wait until the appropriate time.
But the episode did get a bit uneven pacing wise for me. Or maybe just a little jarring since the War in the stepstones was happening simultaneously to the slow moving hunting camp scenes
Be honest, if daemons scene where he’s running through arrows was in season 8 you would have tore it to shreds. That was the most ridiculous display of plot armour I’ve seen in ages. This series so far is miles behind game of thrones season 1-4. (Like it if you want you’re aloud to have your own opinion)
Yeah it has its bad moments here and there like this and crabfeeder sending the whole army to kill one guy but i think it is close enough in terms of quality to earlier seasons
I am so glad you noticed that Viserys has been holding back more pain this episode. What I was immediately able to tell was how different he was breathing. Compared to 1&2 his breaths are more labored and he's constantly shifting uncomfortably.
Alicent: u must take the crown
Aegon: I don’t want it
I found the battle scene very disappointing. The plot armor was so strong it must've been made of Valerian steel! The action was so boring and there was no suspense. There was disbelief for sure, but not suspense. I believe this is a really bad omen to how the series will play out, and I'm surprised most viewers are finding excuses for it. In the good GoT seasons (1-4) we never had to twist ourselves into pretzels to explain how a character didn't die or how a battle played out. We started doing that in season 5 and then exceedingly in seasons 6-8! I would rank the ridiculousness of the battle scene here to be at par with season 6. I can only hope that we'll start going down the scales back to seasons 1-4 otherwise soon enough we'll find ourselves in season 7-8 territory again.
Gotta love that armor that protects him from exhaustion and arrows.
That's a thick plot armor for sure!
Maybe grrm has finally learned killing great characters before the final battle leads to a trash ending
Well… it didn’t protect him from arrows did it?
@@pastlife960 If you can continue fighting it doesn't really seem like the arrows made a big deal or really slowed you down tho. :D
@@dvdv8197 well that's the point of wearing an armor
@@dvdv8197 he literally had to drag himself on the ground to get cover and lay there as he took out the arrows... that means he was slowed down. He's one of the best warriors in the world at this point, pretty sure he'd have great stamina
How do you get clips of the show to use in your videos? Anybody have ideas?
that masked man at 0:21 looks a LOT like Night King with that thing on his face
While I like the episode, it doesn't really make sense that Daemon lands his dragon and just sits there for the archers to hit him, instead of first taking out the archers (like the other dragon rider did later in the episode), and then continue to do sweeping runs without landing until they were all in their caves. Then he could camp on top of the caves and prevent anyone from sticking their heads out until they ran out of food and drink. Easy win.
I was confused about how Daemon can be touching the crabfeeder's corpse without contracting the greyscale the crabfeeder is infected with. Nobody specifically said the crabfeeder had greyscale, but I think that was the implication, right?
Yes, but in the lore, it is also implied that Targaryens are immune to greyscale, specifically. Not immune to ALL illness. of course. But I do wonder if that ALSO has to do w/the implications of Valarians having literally dragon blood in them. As in, they really ARE part Dragon. (ie: Mated w/them in the past somehow through sex magic, blood magic, etc.) 🤔🐉 The lore can take you deep down a rabbit hole let me tell you, lmao...
They said in one of the behind-the-scenes videos that Craghas does indeed have greyscale. You can also see that it has advanced since the time jump. And Daemon's aunt, Septa Maegelle, died of greyscale. I will have to look again, but I thought maybe Daemon was dragging Craghas by the cuff. Still, the clothing would be contaminated.
@@KabbalahSherry that's wrong.
Dragons r actually magical in nature cause a dragon is a wyvern /firewyrm hybrid. So this magic is connected with the dragonlords
This worked my nerves. I was bitching to my husband that Jorah contracted greyscale from a small, insignificant touch. Daemon fought the Crabfeeder in a tight space. In addition to dragging his half corpse, he should have been splashed in blood.
@@KabbalahSherry oh wow, i’m pretty familiar with the lore but I wasn’t aware that the Targaryens were supposed to be immune to greyscale.
It was amazing to finally see a dragon in violent dragon action. It's a shame we won't see the surgery removing all the arrow heads in the next episode, though 🏹
Awesome show.
I really loved House of Dragon episode 3, well with the steppingstones, did not really care much for the hunt part. But my main question is where was ceraxes during that fight. At the start of the episode, you see Daemon ride on ceraxes and start to burn everything. Then he gets back to the main camp and receives his brothers letter just after he got off ceraxes. Did he just vanish or something since only sea smoke came to his aid dragon wise.
its impossible for a dragon to join a fight without its rider. it will just kill everyone both his allies and enemies
1. Sea smoke is “invisible” which makes him better for a surprise attack
2. No rider+ needs rest just like humans
@@cjjk9142 exactly bro

Absolutely. All of Viserys' scenes were 10/10
@@sou713 yeah and Milly and Matt were amazing too IMO
Still a great episode, but it has many questionable parts where the previous two didn't.
@@milanhvozdik3379 absolutely yeah. Let's hope the important battles don't have this many instances of plot armor
Paddy Considine’s performance is so good my mum who works in a nursing home was like that how some in tremendous pain would act him getting of the throne was so telling
I was hoping this would take more than 1 episode
Caraxes best dragon
😂
After watching Episode 3 I literally gave him the title "Daemon The Badass"
good thing they shoot those arrows like a musket line from 17th century :D
I should rewatch that scene with Viserys because everyone else is taking it differently than I did when he was talking about his dream. I thought it was the realization that his dream was just a regular dream and not a prophetic one at all, but everyone I see still talks about it like he had a prophetic dream, despite no parts of it coming true other than him finally having a son.
I was yelling at Alicent through that whole episode last night because she just sat there watching her husband get sloppy drunk.. Everyone seen it happening, it was like a car accident that you couldn't look away from. I would've gone to him immediately but I understand they had to have it go a certain way but I just felt for him.
That’s why men would choose you over her
Perhaps she knows his (physical) pain
Arrows aren’t that accurate, arrows were used as suppressing fire in battles. A lot are needed to do damage.
That is maybe true, but he dodged 9 volleys and he wasn't in any kind of cover for most of them. That is just too much. They could have filmed the scene so that it doesn't look so stupid, but it really did.
@@milanhvozdik3379 He had a lot of cover... There were a dozen of wrecked ships in the beach, arrows aren't bullets, hitting a fast moving target from that distance isn't an easy task...
@@guruxara7994 Except to a half experienced archer, it is. Medieval sources describe common archers shooting birds out of the sky during foraging sessions in war, and you obviously have the entire Asian history of horse riding archers decimate armies, from the Mongols to the Mamluks.
I have to say that the battle of this episode felt like it needed to happen for plot. Daemon could have had the dragons circle around the caves driving all of the crab feeders forces into the caves. While the dragons are overhead they bring all their forces over to the caves and set a siege line therefore making the caves irrelevant. I felt that the way the crab feeder was shooting the trebuchets at the ships was so unrealistic. There's no way the crabfeeder could've moved those into caves at a fast enough pace to not get demolished by the dragons instantaneously. The battle tactics felt unrealistic and it ruined the battle for "plot purposes"
I found Daemon's angry reaction to the letter kinda funny. It's like when you try to help your little brother with a hard level on a video game and he cusses you out because he wants to win it by himself.
I feel like I’m supposed to despise him but I can’t, he’s my favorite character
I think your commentary is always on point. I agree with most things you say. I loved the episode and this is meant to set up further conflict down the line and make Daemon seem badass and fearless which it accomplishes greatly. I think this episode was yeah a bit showy but overall great.
I loved that this battle strategy made somewhat sense not like season 8
That battle was short but remember this was a 3 year war
Watching this scene again, the fog is very dense. It just can't be that dense to us viewers or we can't seeing anything. So those missing arrows are logical when you factor in wind and fog.
And how far away they are
For real, they were firing medevil bows, at a moving target from meters away! And the legendary swordsman they were shooting at, was doing somersaults cutting through their men & occasionally taking cover too. 🤦🏻♀️🙄 lmao So of course most of them missed.
Plus, nobody takes into account that most of them were just mercenaries - nobody said anything about them being EXPERT level bowmen ffs. And we saw that Daemon did in fact get hit, soooo... it's not like he wasn't in ANY danger. He very well could have died & I felt that worry, despite already knowing the story!
People are just nitpicking this show to death, in ways they NEVER did the earlier seasons of GoT. 🙄 And I mean I get it... trust was broken. But these are new showrunners, who at least care about the lore & have involved George in everything, every step of the way.
I really wish people could just RELAX, and give the show a chance, instead of literally looking for things to b*tch about. They're all such small mistakes or gripes... why even bother bringing them up?? They've done a brilliant job so far. Let Us f*cking celebrate it.
@@KabbalahSherry Why do you think Mercenaries are inexperienced? You realise being a mercenary meant you were competent in the art of war? Why would a king hire a very expensive mercenary company if they're no better then the farm hands of his own land? The lack of education is baffling.
Some thick plot armor there. Also, the whole strategy don't make any sense and Craghas Drahar suddenly deploying his army to capture one man it's just dumb. The episode was really good, but the battle was flawed by those choices.
one man? How about the prince of the 7 kingdoms LOL if i was fighting this war for 3 years i might have taken that chance too idk.
He didnt deploy his entire army, it was like 10 soldiers and 20 archers
"one man", i don't think you understood why Daemon was the bait, he isn't a random dude, he is a Westeros' Targaryen Prince, his value alive or even dead was immense, Dahar went with an all-in for the high price...
Matt smith full tilt sprinting through sand in a blonde wig had me laughing WAY too hard and I cannot explain way
what do you think about the big time jumps? I kinda wish they would take it slower so we could have more scenes falling in love with the characters like little drama and politcing like varys and petyr in got
Viserys wants to be a Good King, a Good Father, and a Good Man... hard to juggle all 3 when in charge of the most powerful Dynasty Wesreros has ever known.
He’s not a bad guy but he his awareness level to a lot of shit is poor
I think this was my favorite episode so far! I really love Daemon, he is my favorite character. Honestly I do love Viserys and Rhaenyra a lot also so it's hard to choose. I didn't mind the ending when he just destroys crabfeeder, I mean the guy was riddled with disease and sickness, what kind of fight was he going to put up one on one? I agree about Daemon avoiding the arrows, he was running/zigzagging/hiding, it was completely different than battle of the bastards. I feel like every episode will just get better and better since these first 3 are kinda like set up/prologue.
One of the best show, not tell battles I've seen in a LONGGGGGGG time.
In regards to the arrow barrage, some weapons expert I saw did an analysis on it, and what he said was that given the accuracy of arrows in the time period that the a song of ice and fire series is set in, the amount of training it would take to get people to be super proficient with bows was longer than the step stones were under seige, and then even considering the type of bow you couldn't expect them to be as accurate as say Ramsey's men were in the battle of the bastards. So as you said, barely plot armour, if any at all.
