One thing that's actually amazing about the game, is its soundtrack. Its OST was so good that its composer Jun Senoue, was even like, "This music is too good to be wasted on Sonic 3D Blast" and then re-used some of the songs for the first Sonic Adventure game.
To be fair, it was less "this music is too good to be wasted on 3D Blast" and more "Japan has never heard this music before so they won't notice if I just reuse them". Japan wouldn't get 3D Blast until a year after Adventure came out and even then it was only the Saturn version with its completely different soundtrack. Mega Collection was their first exposure the Genesis version.

Fun fact: The opening cut scene takes up the majority of the game cart's memory. I think it's like... 4 times bigger than the whole game? It's crazy. Furthermore, to circumvent debuging testing, if you ever encounter an error in the game, it's programmed to take you to a stage select menu, making it appear as if you had accidentally found a secret! You can trigger that menu by just jostling the cart in the Genesis itself. And if you want an earlier exemple of Isometric 3D-like games, I highly recommend Rare's 'Snake Rattle & Roll' on the NES!
There is a legit code for the level select: B, A, Right, A, C, Up, Down, A on the title screen, then start a new game. It's certainly better for the long-term health of your cartridge and console than applying physical force.

23:49 "Are you really playing Sonic 3D Blast for a good time, or to look back at history...and chuckle?" That is the best description possible of why people come back to this game lmao
The developers at Traveler's Tales in the 90s are an interesting bunch. They made some very impressive software with amazingly creative use of each platforms' hardware to pull off things that shouldn't have been possible for games that no one cared about. They knew how to program games really well, but actually designing fun and interesting gameplay seemed to be a challenge. As a programmer myself I know the struggle, it takes a very different mindset to design games rather than just coding them. It probably didn't help that they almost never had much time or budget to polish their games as they were just cranking them out within a matter of months most of the time.
@@thomasstone3480 This game is a good example of how, even if the final product isn't technically GOOD, the audience can tell, if I might say, when you put your whole ass into a work. Sonic 3D Blast, especially on Genesis, sure as shit didn't slack on anything. It was a genuine technical achievement that, yeah, kinda sucks, but the audience, in time, catches on to the heart that went into a given work. @@spacebassist what a pun. :) Very blasting people's processing speeds though. :) Sonic Blast might also be the victim of this. Nah, more like the cause for victims.
I played this game on genesis as a kid and honestly loved it. If you would have asked me back then I would have said its 10/10. Looking back now, I tend to agree with Scott's analysis. But when I revisit it, part of me is still that little kid just happy to be exploring a sonic world. Helps that the OST is filled to the brim with bangers.
Ever since I clicked on this video, I've wanted to see Scott talk about Sonic "3D" "Blast", I'm glad that my 5-second long dream is finally coming true.

8:34 I genuinely nearly cried that theme is so nostalgic to me because my dad used to emulate sonic games on his Mac and I loved this but also never beat the level and just that theme brought back so many fond memories even though all I would do was run around
I decided to complete Sonic 3D Blast earlier this year. I actually ended up enjoying it way more than I thought I would. Some of it was frustrating but once learning how things worked the gameplay became way more enjoyable. I also really do love the music in this game.
The whole concept of collecting Flickies and losing them when you get hit and taking them to the goal in each level is the same as the original arcade/Genesis game "Flicky" made by Sega back in the 80s. That's also why they appear in Sonic games when you destroy enemies. They're even in Sonic Adventure.
I remember one winter, I got sick. My mom asked me what I want to make me better, and I said "A new Sonic Game". She brought me 3D blast, which for some reason kept crashing on my Genesis. But you know what did not crash? The sound test. I love this game's OST, and I love that Sega still honor it, as we've seen this music get rearranged many times over the years. I finally played 3D Blast on the Mega Collection, and I really liked it. Sure, it's no S3&K, but as far as Sonic spin-offs go, it's a solid one.
Hey Scott, not sure if you’re going to see this or not but I’d really like to thank you for the pure joy and positive energy you bring with your videos. This past year has been very tough for me and your videos are one of the few things that put me can make me momentarily forget all of the hardships and be truly, truly happy. Thank you for everything you do Scott.
The 6:08 joke caught me so off guard, I spilled cereal on my laptop. I'd be pissed if wasn't laughing so hard. And if my roommate wasn't facing me from across the room,
Putting this out there super late, but Scott, huge thanks for getting around to adding the music used in this video. I tried desperately to track down the Rusty Ruins Zone (Act 1) theme by ear, but I had no luck until you added it to the description. Appreciate it so much man, it did not go unnoticed!
I remember having my pre teen mind blown when I first played this game. I mean the novelty definitely wore off by like the second zone but having not played any true 3D games at that time it was genuinely impressive. I also remember it being a two and a half trawl to complete with no save function which was kindof weird considering sonic 3 had a save system and this was in my mind at least the next evolution of Sonic games.
If anything needs to be said about this game, it's that you've done yourself a disservice if you've even remotely touched the Genesis version. The Saturn version is the way to go, but even then you could do much better.
I actually really like this game, admittedly, and somehow that’s grown for me over the years. It feels like a sort of intermingling of a ‘Sonic game’ and a isometric platformer rather than one being the other, and since both appeal to me independently, I think that’s why I enjoy it. But I definitely think it’s influenced by nostalgia too! Those soundtracks for both the Genesis and Saturn respectively are very much favorites. Great video, Scott :)
I just wanted to say that 2:54 unlocked a core memory of myself playing BUG! when I was very, very young. I had literally forgotten about it COMPLETELY until seeing this footage. Very surreal!
this man should be given an award. I mean 20-30 minute videos with great comedy every week or two. and if he's gone for a month he's either taking a well-deserved break or making a movie-length piece of content. he is one of the greatest RUclipsrs ever. (In my opinion)
We're so lucky to get so much Scott the Woz at the end of this year. All though I am happy that his content is on other platforms, it was quite sparse in the beginning of the year. Have a great 2023 Scott the Woz.
7:28 When I attempted to play Sonic 3D Blast on this collection as a kid, the "SEGA!" shout always scared me out of my bedroom because i wasn't cognitive enough to remember those versions of the ads that used that shout for the marketing 😰
11:25 even better examples are the arcade games Qbert and Crystal Castles, released in 1982 and 1983 respectfully. Sure, they didn't have eight-directional movement, but the isometric top down view was already being utilized over a decade before 3D Blast.
Scott the Woz is the channel I come to to watch a video longer than the actual time I spent playing these games that lived as random distorted memories in the back of my head
Scott’s content really does somehow bring my mood up, especially with the high anxiety I deal with in my life. Always enjoy the things you do Scott! You’re awesome!
Being a Sonic fan who likes this game and this being the first thing you watch of Scott is something else, lemme tell ya. Watching this was like watching a kid get punched in the mouth but then the person who punched them bought Ice cream for them later. Good video lol
how do you know it increased that much? Did you measure the before and after? If so, why did you measure your heart rate before he uploaded? Did you predict he was going to upload or do you measure your heart rate every so often just in case it happens? (or maybe you just missed a "to" and meant "goes up to 102.3", in which case my reply is stupid and dumb)
The developer Jon Burton has a channel (shown at 20:06) where he shows the making of the games he worked on. For example, he explained how it's possible for that intro cutscene to work so well on a 4 MB Sega Genesis cartridge. Also, he follows me on Twitter for some reason.
I was so excited to see this video pop up in my notifications. I never owned a Sega console, but I experienced games like BUG and 3D Blast through the Jack in the Box promo CDs on PC (late 90s/early 00s). Not owning any consoles meant I played the absolute hell out of these games and enjoyed every minute of it. Granted I always went back to Sonic 3, but many childhood hours were spent exploring the "3D" worlds as Sonic.
It’d be great if there was a sort of directors cut of the Saturn version. I think it’s a neat enough game that if it had the strengths of both the Saturn and Director’s cut versions then it’d be something that I could recommend more people check out. I mean the special stages on Saturn are some of the best in the series, and that counts for something. Also Jon Burton’s work on his RUclips channel GameHut is really cool, he did a video talking about how the intro for the Genesis version works. Great watch if you’re interested in that.
You nailed it right on the head. It's a game I had growing up, I loved and hated it. I never beat level 2. Honestly, I spent most of my time on the Sound Test menu (Genesis Version). The best thing that came from this game is absolutely it's Soundtrack, I still listen to it today.

One thing that's actually amazing about the game, is its soundtrack. Its OST was so good that its composer Jun Senoue, was even like, "This music is too good to be wasted on Sonic 3D Blast" and then re-used some of the songs for the first Sonic Adventure game.

It probably didn't help that they almost never had much time or budget to polish their games as they were just cranking them out within a matter of months most of the time.

yeah, they made me feel a lot of affection towards the game, like say what you want about it but it's not halfassed
This made me go check out the GameHut video and, yeah, that IS cool! Love seeing technical tricks like that from the 16-bit era.
That's why games like Sonic 3D Blast are fondly remembered and the latest installments of Call of Medal of Duty and Honor XXXI aren't.

For all its flaws, Sonic 3D Blast was mindblowing to play in the 90's on the Genesis. And the music still slaps.

Now we know that the reason Scott got a PC is for Sonic 3D Blast: Director’s Cut. Glad to know he’s spending money responsibly, like always!
At least you didn't lose any progress when the game crashed. Turning the crash handler into a level select was genius.

Scott, I've been very sick this past week and your videos are absolutely saving me. Thank you
I actually really like this game, admittedly, and somehow that’s grown for me over the years.

I’m happy Scott went back to his sonic series. It’s nice to hear about a sonic game from the perspective of a gamer rather than a sonic fan.
