Small error: Yo-Kai Watch 3 in North America and Europe is not actually a localization of Tsukiyaki (the third version from Japan) but instead a unique all in one edition featuring content from all three versions made specifically for NA and EU, making it the definitive edition of the game, and ironically not playable in Japanese at all
Though the only downgrade is that they removed the summoning app but that's just a minor thing.

The localization of YO-KAI WATCH 3 is actually a fourth version! They put all the content from the three japanese versions into one game! (minus some stuff that required going to arcades or scanning medals that were only sold in Japan)
Are you sure? My japanese 3DS reads YW3 as yokai watch 3 sukiyaki-- wasnt that just the 3rd version?
@@abaque24 The localization is mainly based on the third version but one can still get the content exclusive to the other two versions (like yokai and quests), branching path notwhistanding. Even if you have the third japanese version you still have to either trade or link to the other two to 100%.
I'm not sure about specifics right now but something similar happened with 2: You couldn't get regular Venoct, Kyubi, Toadal Dude and Archnus in Psychic Specters, only in Bony Spirits or Fleshy Souls (though they made up for it by adding Illuminoct and Darkyubi).
By that logic you could consider the North American release of Pokemon Blue as a 4th version, meaning that the gen 1 games got 5 separate versions in all.

I am so happy you talked about yo Kai watch. People nearly remember it and it’s still one of my favorites to this day
The idea behind the Nier release being two seperate games gets stranger and a little more interesting the more you look into it. I'm pretty sure (mostly) that the original story of Nier was always supposed to be an older brother saving his younger sister, this would suit the japanese market quite well. However, considering the landscape of Action adventure RPGs at the time somebody stepped in and suggested making an Older Nier that was a father instead, which would end up more suitable for an American audience with games like God of War (supposedly). That also would explain why they released on the consoles they did, PS3 was a japanese console so most people would play the one more suited to their market, and the Xbox was an American consoles so it would fit in with that game library. But when it came to the western release they just stuck with the model that would be more suited to them on both consoles. Except for the fact that Dad Nier acts the exact same as the niave and growing Older Brother Nier, but whatever.
When it comes to the re-release they just stuck with the Older Brother Nier since Japanese narrative and character designs have grown much more popular in the west, and it was called Nier Replicant in Japan so it's Nier Replicant. Don't worry about the numbers on the end, I'm almost sure they have no meaning other than it being another way to say Remastered.
The numbers on the end are there just because Yoko Taro likes trolling people, no other reason. Probably.

Fun Fact: The other two Austin Powers games were meant to be themed after Fat Bastard (Also played by Mike Myers,) and Felicity Shagwell (They were made to coincide with the second movie, The Spy Who Shagged Me.)
Ultimately, it’s obvious why the other two were cancelled, but I enjoyed them for what they were as a kid, especially because my dad and I loved Austin Powers. I still do. Those cartridges, underwhelming and empty as they were, are still rather nostalgic to me.

Fun fact for anyone who cares, Nier wasn’t supposed to be a dual release. Replicant was originally going to be the only version before Square decided that Americans wouldn’t want to play as a Teenager and made the devs make another version with an older character, which is why only Gestalt released outside Japan originally. Replicant was the only one that was remastered later since it was supposed to be closer to the creator’s original vision and included scenes cut from the original game.

The reason for the Nier release wasnt them trying to grab for a dual release. The original release was with Old Man "Papa" Nier as the protag but it wiffed sales wise in Japan bc the target demographic didn't relate to the protag so the sales were shit. So they made Replicant replacing him with a younger more "shounen" protag (Brother Nier) to get the Japanese audience interested and to buy it. Thats why its the same game with only a few minor plot changes and vastly different characters. In all future games of the series it treats Brother Nier as the protag and pretty much never talk about Papa Nier.

One important fact you didn't mention about the 2 Zelda Oracle games is that they were originally meant to be a TRIO. Capcom was commissioned to do 3 games, but bridging a story across 3 games that could be completed in any order proved to be way to complicated.
So they cut it down to 2, and the 3rd game Capcom was contracted to still make for Ninty resulted in Minish Cap.
Side note, if anyone tells you the oracle games are being remade with the third game made as well, they are lying. The third game's ideas were split up between the two
I have been telling people that Pokemon isn't gonna drop the Dual Releases. But what it can do is do what the Oracle games did and use the same engine to produce two different games. With a story interlocking with one another.

Megaman doing the split release on the GBA is probably the best example ive ever seen of it happening.
Each version has a completely different set of playable characters and a slightly different story for each character to justify the difference and each character has a unique moveset leading to more of a justified reason to actually PLAY both if you want to.
That’s the case for all the battle networks aside from 3, where blue is basically a better version, very slightly, cause the original battle network 3 in Japan had a blue version, then an updated black version featuring bug fixes, some new content and other adjustments. While the adjustments and bus fixes were added in both white and blue, blue is based on black and contains that versions unique content, that content is oddly missing from the white version so ever so slightly blue is just a better game.

@@kariminyt U definitely should try it. Need to warn you tho, there's a lot of story, it's almost a visual novel sometime, and the story also contain some puzzle in the open world but jammed in a lot of action during battles-
In short, it's a great series with unique battle mechanics that everyone should try
@@kariminyt my only gripes with the Battle network series is that sometimes stuff just isn't told to you so you have to look up a walkthrough to figure it out and the devs never realized this throughout the entire series.
That's a black spot on a series that I consider one of my all time faves, other than that pretty good games
@@frds_skce Theres also noticeable padding in these games. lots of unnecessary backtracking and fetch quests.
The story is also varied - sometimes there is terrible moments - walking into traps, or not doing realistic things to solve a problem... yet at other times its super well done and theres some poignant moments

The first two bayformer tie-ins had no business being as good as they were, especially the DS versions. I actually still have my original copy of ROTF- Autobots, although I haven't played it in God knows how many years
Sonic rush and the autobots version were the first games I had on my DS. I was kinda mad my parents got me a licensed game because even back then I knew their reputation.
But damn, it was a fully 3D open world transformers game on the DS. The coolest part was how you could scan vehicles to make them playable in your collection. To this day I never got them all.
I played the Autobots game on an R4 card. A couple of years later, I learned of the existence of the Decepticons version from an old friend. I played that game via an actual cartridge.

I haven't watched Scott on RUclips in awhile, but I noticed that even though this was playing across the room while I was on my phone, I was keying into everything he said. He does a great job of not just becoming background noise and keeping your interest the whole time you're watching

Red and Blue was a stroke of genius. Imagine if Pokemon was just released on the Gameboy as "Pokemon". You ask your parents for a copy of Pokemon and they tell you "we already own that game, just share with your brother". You all know parents everywhere would do this.
I can't help but wonder if storage space was also an issue. I'd love to see someone hack the two games into one and see if it would fit on a single cart. After all, they could've just called them Pokemon 1, 2, 3, etc...
@@anon_y_mousse There are several hacks where they've combined both Pokemon Red and Blue (actually, I think there's at least one hack like that for every generation up to the DS). It easily fits on a single cartridge.
Although I completely understand you wondering if it would, since Pokemon Red and Blue are notorious for barely fitting on the cartridge due to how unoptimized they were.
But since the differences are literally just a few lines of code (the exclusive Pokemon themselves are clearly already on the cartridge, otherwise you wouldn't be able to trade them), it turns out that they could've been combined easily.
That being said, I'm glad it was a dual release though.

@@DanVzare this issue was made even worse in GSC lol, they had to fit TWO regions (including Kanto), 532 Pokémon sprites (including shinies and Unown), time correlating events, and more for the original Game Boy (for GS at least) I believe Masuda said that if it wasn’t for Satoru Iwata coming in to help come up with a compression system, the games wouldn’t have even come out
They just did it to encourage trading. When Pokémon released the idea of someone buying both and having two systems was basically unthinkable

5:45 Seeing Scott go Hulkamania on a Nintendo handheld is a staple of every Scott the Woz video.
In defense of Black 2 and White 2, those games not only had different Pokémon, but the actual layouts of the games were a bit different, the most notable example being Route 4. In the first games it was just a desert with some construction work going on. In the sequels, Black 2 saw the fully completed street with buildings, while White 2 had the project abandoned due to the discovery of ruins at the site. The games had legitimate different layouts in many places that made it more than just “oh a few colors and Pokémon are different!”
With Brilliant Diamond and Shining Pearl there’s an actual flag in the code you can switch to change the version of the game. One dinky little bit of code is the difference between two $60 games that are way too faithful remasters instead of the tried and true adaptation combo of the third game and the original releases.

@@chainswordcs Oh yeah BW2 are full on sequels both in gameplay & story. Part of the conflict is what each faction of Team Plasma (the ones loyal to N & the ones who were just using it as an excuse to fuck up everyone's day) is doing a year or two after Ghetsis was defeated.
Man they dropped the ball hard on the Diamond and Pearl remakes after how incredible HGSS and ORAS were.
not to mention that black 2 and white 2 include 5 new cities and towns that weren't in the original games plus an entirely new story! they can't really be lumped in with traditional 3rd games.

The DS versions of the Transformers tie in games were also dual release but the unique thing is the Decepticons version had its own story and characters while Autobots version followed the movie loosely, with the decepticons story being arguably better. Pretty cool tbh
I played it too. The console version had the game split between autobot and decepticon while the ds versions were separate. They did the same with all the others ds version of transformers games in the 2000, though the original is easily the best one. The DS Decepticon games gives them more character than arguably all of the Micheal Bay movies combined

I do think there is one aspect about why Pokemon worked and others didn't that was only touched upon here: the social aspect. Pokemon got big at a time the Game Boy was THE mobile gaming device, and on top of that it especially exploded in Japan, which is smaller. People walking around and deciding to trade or battle was pretty common. Similarly, kids on the playground or in college deciding to trade around and battle was a big reason for all that childhood popularity. In Pokemon's case, the version differences give a reason to interact that doesn't normally exist, since you NEED to trade in order to finish the Pokedex. Most games with version differences just split them for no reason or for a reason too focused on single player experiences, totally missing on this.
While not social I'd say Oracle of Seasons / Ages did this the best since you get story differences, new final bosses and them being different games in the same engine, and at a time where just shoving it all into one cartridge would have been difficult.
The diamond and pearl remakes are in fact literally the same exact game with a very very short code difference that states its either one or the other to the console, if you buy both digitally you have the exact same game with no differences installed twice.
Making you pick a version at the start would immediately solve the social aspect, you just need a friend who picks the alternate "world" when they start their game, its that simple, the fact that the tradition continues is just to hook up whales that will totally buy both, because pokemon fans get a bit too insane, God the fact that both pokemon sword and shield have different versions of the same DLC which is THE EXACT SAME CONTENT its outrageous, if you want the DLC for both versions you have to buy it twice.
@@necrowondo SwSh dlc is.. technically different, at least for the first one, since you get a different "rival" character in each game, with some slightly different dialogue and a different team, much like how a couple of the gym leaders are different between games. But yup, for the rest of it, practically identical

I'd personally say that likely has little to with why it's accepted in Pokemon, but not in other series. I believe it's because, for Pokemon, it was released while we were children and the gaming landscape was entirely predicted on children as customers. Now those same children are adults that have to earn their money and won't pay for the same game twice, and we've learned that's all a dual release is. It's still accepted in Pokemon because nostalgia is strong and dual release is part of Pokemon's identity, even originally.

Another dual-ish release was Metroid Prime and Metroid Fusion releasing the same day. If you used the GameCube's GBA link cable you could connect them to unlock the Fusion suit in Prime and the original Metroid in Fusion.
I guess it was tough to decide which to play first, in Europe we didn't get Prime until February 2003 though so that wasn't a decision I had to make.
So fun story I have about the Pokémon versions -
My parents didn't like getting my brother and I a copy of a game each. They considered it a waste of money and encouraged us to share on different save files. However, with Pokémon, having 2 versions meant that was justified as different games and we only had to fight over which version we would each get 😅
So my brother got Ruby, Diamond, and Y, and I got Sapphire, Pearl, and X
Now we DID get Emerald each. But after explaining to our parents that there was only one save file and the story was different to the last games, they gave in

Ah, I remember the summer of 2013 when my brother randomly got a 2ds with Pokemon X at Target, my mother said it was for us to share, when really I played it once on the car ride home, then watched my brother play until Christmas when I got a limited edition 3ds xl with Pokemon Y, I played that game to death. I remember visiting more family that evening, showing everyone that funny stop motion animation dinosaur video that came preinstalled. Than next Christmas my brother opened a copy of Omega Ruby at my parents house, and I was sorta jealous since watching the trailers for that game made it look so good, but then when we went over to my grandparents house later on in the day, I opened a copy of Alpha Sapphire and immediately fell in love with that game. Still vividly remember going to a family reunion in the evening of Christmas day, just playing Alpha Sapphire on my great aunts house steps, completely sucked in to the game.

To be fair, the creators never thought Pokemon was going to be a hit. They just wanted to make a game that kids could socialize with... and they actually wanted more versions so that each play through could be even more unique.
It started out as pure artistic endeavor...

The Oracle games are such a brilliant take on the dual release. I played through them on the 3DS and it was definitely a neat experience. I think it'd be cool if they did a rerelease of these like the did Awakening. Even if it was both games on one cartridge, the unique elements could still shine through.

I gotta give props for Scott having a whole animation dedicated to mystery dungeon. Never thought it would happen, let alone talking about the different consoles, but I'll absolutely take it
One that I also remember are Digimon Dawn & Dusk on the DS. When I tried them both, I was surprised that not just the digimon you can recruit, but even the characters, locations, and story were different. I didn't play very far in them, so they might have become more similar later on, but it was a surprise for sure.

I have to say I freaking loved that Red Rescue Team and Blue Rescue Team released on both systems! I only had a GBA at the time so to kid me it felt like I had a DS-level game, and when I got a DS and Blue Rescue Team it was so awesome seeing the differences! It's definitely just nostalgia here, but I don't even care, I love those games

Regarding fire emblem, I love how they fixed the choice problem In three houses by letting you know a bit about the characters before choosing (thank god the game isn’t in 4 versions), but somehow they still managed to fuck it up by having 10 identical chapters after choosing your route
As one who played and loved Three Houses, looking back on it yeah this was a bit of a bad move. Very happy Three Hopes put the kibosh on that with only the first two levels as being the same across the board.
Here's to hoping IS doesn't try this again with Engage.
I think it did the different paths thing infinitely better than FE Fates. That one did it awfully with the narrative suffering as a result
Fates’ route split thing is kinda fixed if you have all 3 versions as it actually comes in at a reasonable time to make the route split, which I know most people won’t have but it is mitigated when experienced this way. Additionally it’s only 6 chapters in that you make the choice to split which gives you enough time to view both kingdoms(and while the stories dip in quality when you play each route, the first set up chapters are pretty good in my opinion).
Three Houses fixes the route split from a marketing perspective as now they’re included in 1 package instead of 2 with DLC. The problem here is that the route split stuff is a chore to get through. While you technically make the choice in chapter 1, you don’t actually see the fruits of that choice until chapter 13 and depending on the route, you only have 6, 9, or 10 chapters of actually different gameplay. Not to mention Three Houses’ recruitment feature which makes it so that effectively speaking you can use the same units in each run which at least fates had the decency to not have all the same units in its paths.
Then Hopes tries to course correct even further by making the choices actually matter at the start, but you don’t have any of those set up chapters that Fates and Three Houses have so it feels like 3 games rolled into 1 but it doesn’t feel like you did anything important.
Strangely enough, the fire emblem game that I think approaches the 2 routes thing the best(which isn’t a high bar and doesn’t shoot very high in of itself) is sacred stones. For 3-4 chapters you can either continue with Erika or Ephiram, but it doesn’t feel like a chore. It doesn’t bog you down as you’ve played a quarter of the game so far and it’s not a huge gimmick that tries to trip you up.

This is why I prefer FE Awakening, since it's just one singular, straightforward narrative with no multiple paths to complicate things.
