But if we do consider small rules changes to be okay, and it's just that the core rules of the game it builds on has to be the same. Then what about chess games? I guess those haven't sold good enough. Okay, but add together every single release of EA's FIFA, Konami's PES and every other football game released ever, which follows the same core ruleset of football. How many copies is that? Funny enough, the only form of hardware since 1989 that doesn't have a version of Tetris is the one and only *Wii U.* Maybe if there was a Tetris in that failure it may help sell more units. Edit: By hardware I mean any VIDEO GAME system!
Brandon Matarrita I think it does. I didn't know it had a Wii U version! I'm content with it being on my Switch, while I have Tetris Party on my Wii U.
Nah, Minecraft is great. It deserves those sales figures. The fan base isn’t always brilliant, but that’s normally just the kids. Look at the subreddit, it’s all people who really care about the game, enjoy it, and are not cancer. Even some children play the game normally, like I did years ago.
Yeah, I never really played on survival mode, I just really like building stuff. It reminds me of a less complicated version of the program Sketch-Up, which is also really fun to play with, I actually made a model of a gingerbread house on it and it looked fairly similar, I didn't know how to add more details.
Minecraft will always be a part of my childhood and, although I shouldn't be, I'm nostalgic for it. And while the fanbase has some (quite a lot) of bad people, that ignores most of the amazing community that I was with when I played the game. That said, if some people could just leave the game forever, it would be appreciated.
I remember it like it was yesterday: me playing Wii Sports and MK Wii with my grandma, and me going to my cousin's house to play Wii Play and Super Mario Bros. Wii with all my cousins together, it was awesome! Wii for sure has a special place in my heart.
5:40 That was the case with every TES game starting from Morrowind. I knew so many people waiting for "the new Morrowind game". I've even seen a German game magazine that refered to Oblivion (just announced at the moment) as "Morrowind 2".
❗️My Timestamps: Games I bought New in this Video (so my purchase counts to this Game's total in this Video): 6:13 New Super Mario Bros. Wii I got this with my Limited Edition Black Wii but it wasn't a Pack-in Bundle. 6:54 New Super Mario Bros. [DS] Again, I got this with my Black 'Lite but it wasn't a Pack-in Bundle. 8:33 Wii Sports Resort I got this with my Limited Edition Black Wii but it WAS part of a Pack-in Bundle. 9:17 Mario Kart Wii I bought this as the Steering Wheel Pack. 10:10 Super Mario Bros. This came with the NES Dad bought for us so was a Pack-in Bundle. 11:05 Wii Sports I got this with my Limited Edition Black Wii so it was a Pack-in Bundle. I also had 'GTA:SA' (on PS2), GTA5 (on PS3 & XB:One) but they were secondhand.
About a year ago I went on vacation and rented a house, the place had a wii but no new super mario bros, wii sports, wii play, smash bros brawl, or mario kart What the crap?!
I think what also helped Skyrim sell was how the game had plenty of memable moments and in 2011 memes really hit the mainstream audience and also let's plays where huge that year.

Pokémon's role is sometimes understated even today. Before it came out Nintendo was actually in quite a bit of trouble. The project to create a successor for the Gameboy had completely failed and their next gen console the N64 had run into serious delays. The PS1 was on the horizon and Gameboy sales because of it's dated technology were at an all time low. Also though Pokémon is not the most selling Nintendo game I do think it's Nintendo's most profitable franchise. It's far more marketable than Mario or Zelda is and far easier to make a lot of merchandise from. The profit values on games are fairly low because competition is fierce but on merchandise the profit margins can be much higher.
@@Parodox306 not really. Niantic gets the lion's share of profits for go. Nintendo gets about 19%. In 2017 Go made $890 million. Red and Blue would have had a total revenue of about $900 million, and Nintendo surely takes a larger cut of those sales. That also isn't counting inflation. In today's dollars, that would be around $1.375 billion. The main series makes Nintendo much more money. Plus Nintendo has some of their first party developers make side games (gamefreak makes the main series and is not a first party developer).
10:30 Mario Bros was ultra successful without pack-in syndrome. Originally the NES was available as either alone, with ROB and Gyrobot or with Duckhunt. However after it became clear that Super Mario Bros was by far the best selling game on the system Nintendo created a fourth bundle with it as well.
He's surprised that red and blue are the best selling pokemon games? He referred to pokemania as the 'the great pokemon boom'? Even if you were one of the like 2% of kids who hated or otherwise didn't play pokemon back then if you had been around you'd be shocked if somehow red and blue *weren't* the bestselling games in the series. It was like the fortnite craze but on steroids, if that helps you understand.
You say it was fortnite on steroids. Considering that Fortnite has more monthly players than red and blue have lifetime sales I think Fortnite is pokemania on steroids.
@@tobyhall8048 that's because of online play.... back then 20 years ago you didn't have online play, all you had was a gameboy and hopefully lots of batteries.
@@tobyhall8048 But the Pokemon craze transcended the games. From TV shows, cards, toys.. There was a solid two years where you couldn't turn your head without seeing something Pokemon related.
Minecraft versions and the platforms they run on: Bedrock edition- - iOS - Android - Windows 10/11 - PS4 - XBOX One - Nintendo Switch Java Edition- - Windows (Any Windows version with Java support) - macOS (ARM, x86, PowerPC, any OS version with Java support) - Linux/Unix (some distributions) - Raspberry Pi (with special optimised version) Legacy Console Edition (7th-gen consoles and Wii U, XBOX One, Nintendo Switch and PS4 pre-better together update)- - XBOX 360 - PS3 - Wii U - PS4 - XBOX One - Nintendo Switch - New 3DS (with a specially optimised version) Yeah, that's a lot of platforms to account for. Definitely see where those sales come from.
Mario Kart wii was not popular cuz of the wheel, but because it was good competitively. Good tracks, skills over luck, loads of shortcuts, glitches and strats. It’s still going today, even the wii online shut down, but the community made their own online mode, added more tracks, more gamemodes, more items etc.
The competitive community you speak of probably doesn't even make up 1% of its overall playerbase. MKWii was popular because it was insanely accessible, it came out during the height of the Wii's popularity, and the wheel was just a lot of fun for casuals to play around with and it actually worked. It was also the first online console Mario Kart, but I think its accessibility and the fact it was basically everywhere was the main reason why it sold so well.

Until you realize that the "franchise" is a puzzle game that takes 30 seconds to learn from 1984. Imagine having your open world, sandbox, single and multiplayer game released on every conceivable console ever barely sell more copies than a franchise about stacking shapes.

I believe I heard it sold something like 70M copies just from the Game Boy pack-in.
Yeah the game boy sold like hot cakes back then, too. Honestly, I don't even count Tetris on this list since they counted every Tetris game.

From the making of this video, the list has changed quite a bit. As of October 2020, the list is thus (following Scott's "no mobile games rule," according to Wikipedia):
15: Skyrim - 30,000,000
14: Call of Duty 16 - 30,000,000
13: New Super Mario Bros. Wii - 30,300,000
12: Terraria - 30,300,000 (that was out of fuckin nowhere)
11: New Super Mario Bros (DS) - 30,800,000
10: Red Dead Redemption 2 - 32,000,000
9: Wii Sports Resort - 33,130,000
8: Mario Kart Wii - 37,320,000
7: Tetris (Nintendo Original Version) - 43,000,000
6: Pokemon Red and Green and Blue and Yellow - 47,520,000 (I know it's 3 games but c'mon they're the same game let's be real)

If Tetris counts it’s entire series, shouldn’t New Super Mario bros do the same?
Every game is the same. Might as well count every version as a port or update of the original.
@@returnedtomonkey8886 If you count every Tetris game as the same, then ... there are still differences as Scott pointed out. Even the NES version of Tetris couldn't follow the base rules.
If you say New Super Mario is the same ... then no. But I don't think you meant that.

Funny enough, the only form of hardware since 1989 that doesn't have a version of Tetris is the one and only *Wii U.* Maybe if there was a Tetris in that failure it may help sell more units.
Edit: By hardware I mean any VIDEO GAME system!

Nah, Minecraft is great. It deserves those sales figures. The fan base isn’t always brilliant, but that’s normally just the kids. Look at the subreddit, it’s all people who really care about the game, enjoy it, and are not cancer. Even some children play the game normally, like I did years ago.
I miss the Minecraft boom of the early 2010s. I wonder if we'll ever get another game like that?
Yeah, I never really played on survival mode, I just really like building stuff. It reminds me of a less complicated version of the program Sketch-Up, which is also really fun to play with, I actually made a model of a gingerbread house on it and it looked fairly similar, I didn't know how to add more details.
Minecraft gets bad rep because some of the fanbase can be really cancerous. But if you look past that it's a really good game.

Pokemon was solidly the single most profitable franchise in Nintendo's arsenal and THEN Pokemon Go came out.
If you search up the highest grossing media franchises of all time, Pokémon tops the list by horselengths
So easy to make merchandise because there are so many Pokemon with all different looks and personality
pokemon is the single most profitable franchise of all time so yeah

Mario Bros was ultra successful without pack-in syndrome.
Humes Knife Glad I grew up with the Red Blue era 😎👊🏻
Fukn love pokemon blue version ❤❤...8 years old playing pokémon on my silver gameboy pocket, forever changed my life!!

Same, first I ever played, will always be my favourite
Mario Kart wii was not popular cuz of the wheel, but because it was good competitively. Good tracks, skills over luck, loads of shortcuts, glitches and strats. It’s still going today, even the wii online shut down, but the community made their own online mode, added more tracks, more gamemodes, more items etc.
Funny that Scott mentioned the balance then.
And because of the wheel.
6:55 this game was my childhood
