Less than 3 months ago I was in the hospital for emergency, life saving surgery. I'm in my mid 40s and a PC gamer since the days when a PC was a vic 20. While I was in recovery my mom bought me a Switch Lite to help kill the time. As cute as that is, the cutest part is that she calls it a gameboy. "Are you still having fun with your gameboy?" "Did your friend ever end up lending you more games for your gameboy?" "Did you ever buy more games for your game boy or are you still playing that wild breath (zelda) game I got for you with it?" "Do you want me to buy you another gameboy game before you go for the folow up surgery to recover with?"
Love my mom so much, and this is kinda a folow up to when I was 12. You see back then I had to do some hospital time, and my mom bought me a gameboy. The origional. Grey brick with a green screen. 2 Games. Tetris. Link's Awakening. I love how shit can repeat it self, over 30 years later.
Your mom is amazing dude
This is so wholesome 🥹 best mom ever
And what is the switch if not a Gameboy that ate his veggies and became a strong Gameman
The Gameboy advance SP was more my generation and it was the first game device i ever asked for and received at my birthday. Definitely was and still is my favorite retro game console
i know this comment is months old at this point, but i hope your surgeries went well and you recovered okay 🙏 your mom sounds awesome

I was wondering when he’d mention it. Man it’s a shame thats all that was said because how they fit that game on an og gameboy was pretty amazing.
@@rancidrubysoho lmao what? No one is asking for an essay. The tricks and shortcuts needed to get a game of that size in an OG GB cart is significant to GB history and deserves mention.

Fun Fact: The name "Game Boy" was inspired by the most popular portable device of the 1980s: The Walkman!
the name "game boy" doesn't really describe me, THE WALKMAN HOWEVER
I can't believe I never connected those dots.
100th like lol
Itoi is such a chad
The name actually comes from Satoru Iwata's vision of the future, where he saw a Scott The Woz video. After seeing it, his only description were the words "Game Boy", and that just so happened to be when the team at Nintendo were trying to come up with a name for a console, with the best contender being "Interactive Visual Media Child".

I’ve noticed how Scott started talking more about Pokemon as time went on. Dual Releases and in his Stash where his friends had him play “Who’s that Pokemon?”
Probably never gonna be the RPG guy people want, but it’s nice for him to appreciate it little by little.
For someone who doesn’t like Pokemon he uses music from the games kinda often.

I don't think you know what "Writing" is.
23:32 if you didn't know, the nintendo character Kirby was named after John Kirby, a man that aided nintendo in a lawsuit where they had to defend against if DK was too much like King Kong or whatever. It's scott sneaking in a gutbustingly hilarious reference.

yup, i agree
I’m from 1985 and my Game Boy era was epic. I had upgraded the hell out of it. Magnifying glass with build in lights nd external speakers on it nd a special Game Boy suitcase.
I still remember when I got my first.. it was the day before my summer vacation. 1 for me and for my little brother. This was for our 23hour bus trip (from the Netherlands to Spain) This was by far the best childhood trips I ever had! Snacks,Game Boy nd looking out of the window of the bus!
And know I’m going to replicate this journey again. In september I’m going with my wifey nd our kids to Spain with the bus for the first time. I bought a Miyoo Mini Plus (look a like game boy but with all the game boy games on it (also Nintendo etc)
Can’t wait until it’s 22september….. it’s +30years ago that I made the last trip with the bus.
Every time I hear the name Game Boy, it gives me instantly all the memories of my long trips Spain each year.
Playing Donkey Kong Land and Link's Awakening on the Game Boy when they were new was absolutely incredible. You can criticise them now because you have modern gaming to compare them to, but Nintendo (and Rare) were trailblazing with these.
Until relatively recently I had no clue that the slowdown in Super Mario Land 2 were FPS drops due to hardware limitations. As a kid I just have no context for it.
The concept of optimization or that games can run poorly at all. I either didn't notice or thought it was intentional whenever the game felt sluggish; I just loved having a unique Mario game on the go.
And now I get annoyed if a game only runs at 30fps, and I'm even considering upgrading to 120hz monitors bc even 60 doesn't feel fast enough for me sometimes.
Times really do change.
"I don't like it when my hands in the back touch. Keep these things away from each other."
- Consider this officially nominated as the next contextless snippet.
I like how Scott reviewed these in reverse order. Dude, your opening joke is one of your best so far :).
Like many here I was there at the end of the line in 2005, but I got into the GB timeline around 1997 when I got a Game Boy Pocket and Donkey Kong Land 2 as my first game. Good times.
Relatable. The GBA was definitely my most nostalgic handheld, but my first portable/game was a Gameboy Color with a copy of Kirbys Dreamland.
I play video games with my nephews, they love the new Nintendo stuff but are also quite happy to sit there and play Game N Watch and the original Gameboy! Timeless classics.
I remember enjoying Donkey Kong Land as a kid. Blew me away being able to play a black and white _Super_ Famicom game at the funeral.
i had gameboy in 1991, it was awesome, i connected it to car battery and me and my friends played infinitely...tetris, super mario, castlevania....playing remakes, remasters of these games today is a blast
Sega Nomad was what I imagined the really rich kids played. In reality, nobody had one.
The first 2 Super Mario Land games might well be the games I've beaten the most times in my life. Those, Pokémon, and Zelda were basically my childhood haha
Although it was amazingly difficult to use due to the size and yeah backwards compatibility be damned....the Micro is still my favorite. I think the look was just too damn cute to deny.
My personal favorite is the Light, it's the ultimate OG GB. It's basically just the original with a better display, 2 AA batteries used and a backlit display that looks to be using whatever Timex used to light their watches. Over all, it's the way to play the original games. It's just a shame it came out nearly a decade after the original.
If you don't remember the blurring/ghosting being that bad on the game boy screen, you're not imagining it. Its the screens age of these old systems.
I loved the Gameboy Micro! My brother and I grew up with them.
As somebody who lived through the original Gameboy (until my mom pawned it while I was at school) you HATED when you couldn't see that red light anymore. It was the beginning of the end. Lol
Man.. I got the brick game boy when I was 7 and I loved it so much
8:26 Super Mario Land’s music is so damn good! It just has so much charm and is very catchy, even tho it doesn’t have many songs they are all really good
It has one of the best soundtracks. They didn’t need to turn it that hard but they did
@@MaxOakland agreed!
I loved this summary. Nice humor and nostalgia.
00:56 Kirby pinball!!! Classic! That was one off if not the first game I played/owned for the ol game boy! The grey block 4 battery destroyer!!!
I remember when the Gameboy color first came out. I knew I had zero chance of getting one cause I knew my family was broke so all 7 of us kids knew better than to ask for anything from tv or at Walmart but the bags of assorted broken toys from the 80s from the thrift store were fair game lol. I thought all kids were living like that so I didn't expect to ever see one outside of a store. That was until I saw at least two kids come to school with one I was fucking furious lol that was The first time I seriously considered stealing from someone to be honest lol. I didn't do it but boy the thought was there especially when one kid let me borrow his for the whole school day I was playing super Mario land on it which I thought was some new shit cause to this point I had never even played an original Gameboy. I thought to myself "when school let's out I'll just run home" since I lived on the next street over from my elementary school and the kid that loaned it to me was in the other teachers class so all i needed to do was avoid him seeing me and just book it through the alley and get into my backyard through the back fence and it's mine lol but what stopped me was thinking about how the kid probably didn't have shit either and he was nice enough to let me borrow it so maybe he'll let me borrow it again some time. Pointless story but it's a memory I almost forgot about until I watched this. I didn't consider how I'd explain to my mom how I have it or having to see the kid the next day at school or the possibility of him going to the principal who was actually good friends with my mom cause she's had all of my siblings in that school from when she was a teacher up to her becoming principal lol. But yeah, thanks for the memory pal.
In all fairness, the GBC was by far the worst one Nintendo ever released. The screen was just so hard to see, so you effectively had to always use a light.
The gba was first consoles I owned as a kid, so it definitely gives me many cherish memories out there .
When I got the little mermaid 2 pinball game around 41 minutes in, and remembered his foreshadowing earlier in the video, is when I realized this kid is really, truly good and making yt videos. Well done dude
4 colours of gorgeous green on a matrix screen. Love it until this day.
Scott's hair has a life of its own and it's ready to mate.
Here are a few impressive games that I don’t recall being mentioned for the GBA but figured I would give a shout out.
many of Square’s RPG rereleases
Golden Sun 1&2
Advance Wars 1&2
Grand Theft Auto Advance
Tony Hawk Pro Skater games
Doom 1&2
The Doom games obviously don’t hold up well today but were impressive for the time. The Tony Hawk games were isometric 3D but still a blast for a handheld experience. GTA Advance was based on its original top-down design like GTA 1/2. Golden Sun and Advance Wars were original GBA titles that still hold up well today, which were RPGs and turn-based strategies respectfully. Square’s rereleases were good ports worth checking out if one is looking at the platform.

Love to see the old outro music. The new one is good, but nothing can top Breakout
i loved my original game boy, got in in 89' ,a year later i had the nuby game light magafier combo, along with the amplifier, and my game boy rocked !
cant wait for my powkiddy v90. so pretty really loooks like gba sp. Even the SF 2000 with snes controller form is amazing. Videogames were never so diverse, fun and acessible as today. i wish we had more time to play
@47:15 This reminds me of when I decided I wanted to dig out my GBA SP and started it up only to be squinting my eyes just to see every pixel in a dimly lit room. I'm so glad I was able to find a backlit ISP upgraded screen before doing a shell swap.
The Gameboy lineup would evolve into the Ds/3Ds lineup eventually all of them would do a fusion dance alongside the home consoles to form the Switch their ultimate fusion for now at course
I'm with Scott. I'm such a sucker for the DMG Game Boy
My favorite GameBoy model was the pocket. At the time, the screen was so much better, and the form factor was absolutely perfect for me. I remember “upgrading” to the Color. It wasn’t the same.
I distinctly remember the GameBoy Camera not looking that great on the Color compared to the Pocket for example.
For Advance models….I like them both. The original was the absolutely perfect form factor, but the SP had a genius design. Much more pocket friendly.
That's only because you never experienced the Game Boy Light. That thing was the greatest they ever made for the original games. Though, I think that the GBA SP is probably the best over all. It could still play all the original games, but also the ones for GBC and it's own library.
I knew I used to have one of those "play it loud" Gameboy models with the colored shell. Man, no one I talk to remembers those existing I thought my mind just kinda made them up lol.
That's the kind my parents got us when they finally decided to buy one. It was the red one. But, later on they bought us the GBC and eventually the GBA SP.
I can't believe I beat Pokémon Red before Scott was even born.....I thought Scott was nearly the same age as me.
if scott was an advertiser for video games he'd be a billionaire
Now I want to play Pokémon! Thanks Scott!
I played games on and off as a kid. My first "console" was a sega game gear. In early sobriety i got a switch and that got me back into gaming in adulthood. I still use that switch and now can play AAA titles with a 4090 graphics card on my phone. Glad i got back into gaming when i did. There are some issues with the gaming industry for sure but crazy good times none the less.

I love these good excuses to re-watch Scott content
The OG Game Boy had many great games, some that still hold up to this day. Just...do not play them on a Game Boy. Emulate, or if you wanna play with the cartridges, use the Super Game Boy.
TBH, I'd get the Game Boy Light for playing on the go, or something along the lines of the Super Gamebody or emulation. I personally have played on my Raspberry Pi and now Mister FPGA and it's just such a better experience.
I was the kid who would plug my gameboy color into the wall to play cause my parents didn’t want to keep buying batteries. LOL
I guess I was the only guy who had to play the original gameboy soley off an AC adapter. My mom didn't want me burning through batteries. I ended up breaking so many of those adapters though. Mine also came with Super Mario Land which IMO was the best game you could include in terms of long term enjoyment out of a single game. I played just that one game for almost a year and then I got Donkey Kong 1994.
lmao the my little mermaid joke that forces you to watch the video to understand is GENIUSSS
also WHERES THE GAME BOY MICRO??????
Scott's thoughts on Zelda for the gameboy are only because the kid was born with the internet. Anybody else wouldn't know playing that game would be the time of your life because there was nothing else to do.
Super Mario advance 3 is even more confusing when you remember Yoshi's island was Super Mario World 2, so the full name should be:
Yoshi's island: Super Mario World 2: Super Mario Advance 3
It's funny how Kirby was meant to be the "Simple games" yet has some of the darkest lore of any Nintendo game.
I. Need. More. GAMEBOY!!!!!!!!
34:38 "and it lacks the iconic Tetris-theme" this actually cannot be. Alexei Paschinow, the original creator of Tetris, obtained judically that "Korobeiniki" has to be included in EVERY SINGLE RELEASE of Tetris EVER. Otherwise it is a breach of contract and would lead to a conventional penalty.
I got the original gb in 1996 when I was 5. I’ve been addicted ever since. I’ve gotten every Nintendo handheld ever since. The gba is still my favorite console of all time.
I loved Mario Tennis for the Gameboy Color. I remember playing it religiously and not being able to get past a certain tennis match so I never completed it. It was so frustrating!
My favorite ways to play today are on the Epilogue GB Operator and the Retroad 5 Plus with the GB/GBC Extension Converter from Ali-Express. I love the Geek Tech Batteryless Save Flash Cartridge with the Epilogue GB Operator. They work great together. I took Legend of the River King 2 for Gameboy Color and ran it through the Gameboy ROM Analyzer on PC and changed the cartridge type to 1EH and fixed the header. This enables Rumble that was programmed into the Japanese version and just needs to be opened on the English version. The Earthquake at the beginning will let you know if you did it right. The Epilogue GB Operator has a Rumble feature so it doesn't need a motor in the cartridge. Just the code. It works for the Pow Kiddy V90 with the Pocket Go Firmware Update as well. That has a motor in it just begging to be used for Gameboy Color. 😊❤ I love Gameboy. I can't wait for my copy of Athletic World to come and D-Fuzed.
I had that Dr Evil game!!! I genuinely liked the minigames a lot.
My all time favorite handheld is the Game Boy Advance SP, it being able to play every Game Boy, Color and Advance game released, a rechargeable battery and backlight. Truly, the greatest of all time.
The library is the only reason why it beats out the Game Boy Light for me. The Light is the absolute best way to play the original GB games.
Mario on the GB was my first Mario game. It holds a special place in my heart.
7:14 I agree it looks more current than you would expect

Huh. Never dawned upon me that the DS line was just like the Gameboy line. Both had 3 consoles, the second one was an upgrade, both had a smaller lite/pocket with a smaller form factor. Anything I missed?
That depends how you count, GB classic, GB Pocket, GB Light, GBC, GBA and GBA SP are ones that arguably deserve to be separated out as there are some substantial differences between them. Although, I can also see that being just 3 handhelds.
Speaking of GBC to original compatibility, I swear I have a memory where my dad chipped out the corners of a couple GBC-only games to make them work on the brick. When you turned on the original Gameboy there was a little cut out on the corner that I guess served as a way to keep the games in? I'm not sure, but the gbc-only games didn't have the corner cut out. I'm not sure if that worked for real or not, but I definitely remember him having 1 or 2 like that.
TBH, I don't think there is a physical way of preventing it. There's an error message that pops up if the game isn't compatible. The GBA games don't have that issue at all as they aren't long enough to contact anything inside the older handhelds.
So glad he started the video with "Hey All Scott here". Gotta love tradition
