Fun Fact: When you left the Wii U idle on the home menu, the music’s tempo would slow/quiet down as well as the floating icons in the background, until you picked up the Gamepad and everything sped back up.

I worked retail when Wii U came and so many angry parents brought back Wii U games that were “broken” and didn’t play on their Wii…… We literally had to hang a sign up on the case as a notice that Wii U was a completely different system than their Wii.

At college, I only had my Wii U and no tv. I set it up under my bed and played Zelda solely on the controller lol. Good times
I was largely out of gaming from ~2009-2015. But in 2017, after the Switch was released, I looked for a used WiiU and bought the system and a good number of games from a guy for a good deal. I cannot tell you how much fun I had for like a year. I knew the system was technically a "bust", and I can't comment on what it was like in the years that the WiiU was "the" Nintendo, but after the fact, I can tell you that it's great. Donkey Kong, New Super Mario Bros., Zelda, Mario Maker, Pikmin, Mario Kart, Mario 3D World, and some others I'm forgetting. Anyway, yeah, I know it's a long-gone console and a dark stain in Nintendo history, but...I partially credit it with getting me back into gaming.

If you get one for a good deal, there's plenty of good to be had with a concentrated burst of the best of Wii U. The pain came when you had to wait 18 months between good releases while you watched your friends with Playstation 4s get solid gold every other week.

1:12:00 I'm honestly so happy that, starting with 3D World, they switched to every OTHER year, and diversified the types of games so it wasn't just constant "same-y" mainline Mario. From 2013 to 2023 we got a 2D-ish 3D Mario, a 3D-ish 3D Mario, a very short 3D Mario inside of a re-release, two Mario Makers, and a completely new 2D Mario with a brand-new style. That's SO much better than TWO Galaxies, FOUR New Soups, and a "3D" game that felt like New Soup and Galaxy got married in the most mediocre way possible.
You keep those 2 galaxies out of it.

@ilururiru I was a PS1 kid who skipped a console generation during high school (the PS3/Wii era). One of my friends in college had a WiiU. We'd play Smash 4, Wonderful 101, 3D World and Rayman Legends in between classes.
I'll say that the Switch era has made me miss the 3DS/WiiU era, since both consoles had a lot of great legacy content via the Virtual Console, especially compared to what we have now.

@@rollingcameraproductions7103He also did a GameCube retrospective before 2022, but the first one was his peach fuzz era of GameCube talk; I figure the reason he did this before a Wii redo was due to alluding to this first.
Scott is one of the very few RUclipsrs who has remained pretty much the same in terms of the kind of content he makes and is making. The fact he’s been able to make the same content but always make it more entertaining than the last, is incredible. This is why he’s one of the best RUclipsrs on this site imo.
I think SomecallmeJohnny and Todd in the Shadows are the only other youtubers that i follow that i still get excited when they release new videos and that's after following them for basically a decade. And they, like Scott, really haven't changed their styles, at least not a drastic way, but their videos are so conforting and replayable.
John specifically is the most comfortable listen, kind of like catching up with an old friend.

I always find it kinda funny that the B.A.T. system in Arkham City Armored Edition just became the electric gloves in Batman Arkham Origins.
Scott has to be, by far, the most consistent RUclipsr in terms of quality. His video style has remained relatively the same throughout his RUclips career, yet he still somehow manages to keep this same style fresh with every new video. Hats off to you, Scott!

Yeah I ended up selling the game pad and haven’t played the Wii u since as it was easily one of the noisiest consoles I have owned and I’m just not a fan of motion controls and having to keep an eye on the battery levels - much prefer a wired controller

My family was going through financial problems at the time, so I only received a 3ds during that time as opposed to the 'big' console that was currently out. I think I ended up getting the better deal overall.

Personally me being rather young, I grew up with the Wii U so i always thought it was the best console ever, until I realized what the the internet thought of it.
I really take issue with the collective wisdom of the internet when it comes to failed video game consoles. It turns into an echo chamber of "OMG, it was crap, LOL!" In the early 90s, I bought what would become one of the most infamous failed consoles ever... The Atari Jaguar. I'm sure you've seen it on RUclips described as "Everything about the Jaguar totally SUCKED without exception!" I won't lie, it was a disappointment and didn't live up to Atari's "64-bits of power" hype. But it wasn't all bad. There were a bunch of games on that console I genuinely enjoyed. And for a brief moment (93-94, before PS1 and Saturn), some of the games had impressive graphics. But the internet likes to focus on the most embarrassing games, ignores the better ones, and everyone has a good laugh, even though a lot of them have no firsthand knowledge of what they're laughing at.

I'm glad you liked the idea of taking your eyes off the screen to do inventory management in ZombiU, I thought I was the only one. Everyone else seemed to think it was a bad idea because zombies could attack you while you were vulnerable, which was the whole point.
So glad you gave Nintendo Land the praise it deserves. What a fantastic game. My siblings and I had such a blast with this game. Every time I would have friends over, we'd play Nintendo Land. My siblings and I still play it to this day. Underrated and definitely one of the best party games of all time.

@@AVI-lh6rm my siblings and i loved the Metroid minigame. My brother isn't great at games, so we always let him be the ship since it was kinda OP. My sister was pretty little and I gamed the most so we'd be the ground team. Each game was always so close. Such a blast.
All the multiplayer games were great though. Played all of them a bunch haha

The Wii U is still one of my favorite consoles, not only does it play the entire Wii library, but it also had some great exclusives.
Main reason I don’t play mine anymore is I’m not a fan of motion controls and would just rather use a wired controller instead of being forced in a lot of the games to waggle the controllers around and of course have to constantly watch the battery level - must admit though the game pad was pretty comfortable to hold

@@urface640 or Smash Ultimate, that is basically Smash 4 but more and better. Or Hyrule Warriors, that combined both Wii U and 3ds versions.. The only games i can think of that the Wii U has that Switch doesn't are the Zelda remasters and Xenoblade X

1:23:00 Red steel 2 though is a masterpiece though, my favorite Wii game, my favorite childhood game, and the only Ubisoft game I can recall liking. I absolutely adore that game.

The Wii U didn’t make sense for all the reasons that it made sense. The Wii U was essentially what the Wii was. It was backwards compatible and supported the use of its prior systems controller. It was underpowered yet had great games that people could get behind. The online got the job done and was never really anything better than good enough. The Wii succeeded but the problem was, it didn’t finish strong. Since the Wii didn’t finish strong and the Wii U was everything the Wii was but better*, that means that it would perform the same way that the Wii did at the end of its lifespan causing it to fail hard
I personally loved ZombiU, the concept of picking a lock, physically looking down leaving you vulnerable just immersed me so much, then the multiplayer, it was the standard Wii U multiplayer, but the multiple gamemodes added in made it more fun as well as just being able to spawn zombies in to me was great execution, I feel that game utilized the gamepad to the perfect degree, it felt like how Nintendo intended the gamepad to be used for singleplayer games.
