I feel like Scott is the kind of guy that can never run out of video ideas. Even though he's done most of the Nintendo consoles and more general topics like controllers and multiple games in franchise, he always manages to keep things interesting no matter how dull or obscure the topic is.
It's like when Jontron made a video on bootleg Disney Games and Plug and Play consoles. Nobody would actually want to see that on paper, but everyone did. That's the power Jon and Scott have
On the other hand, he thinks the Master System was more powerful than the Game Gear, when it was the other way around, due only to the increased color palette. And he's genuinely too stupid, or too lazy, to tell the difference between Streets of Rage on Master System and Game Gear. This episode was a bit of a disappointment, really. Especially since he didn't cover Tearaway, which makes a great case for the Vita vs. the home edition.
@@juststatedtheobvious9633 bro you are losing your mind over a simple mistake, clearly the sega segment was rushed because most of the video was spent discussing nintendo and sony. Still a good video tho
@@little_finger Mistakes, plural. And when this video is number 11 for all gaming videos? His mistakes become accepted wisdom. It's like when the AVGN used a Nintendo ad to claim the SNES ran in higher resolution than the Genesis, when only RPM Racing used that high resolution mode....and looks horrible, due to all the sacrifices necessary. Among many other issues and omissions.
Scott took the time to grab a new monitor, plug in all the cords, connect the system to the tv, and start the game up, all for a 1 second clip of him punching the tv, effectively breaking it. Great effort as always, Scott!
That's Scott! I read a comment on a previous video that said Scott would burn his house down for a 2-second gag, and I believe it. He's a legend in effort to content ratio

I'm surprised Metal Gear Solid: Peace Walker HD wasn't brought up! It might have been the best example of a handheld-to-console conversion thanks to factors like the ability to transfer saves between the PSP and PS3 versions and the fact that this was a from the ground up remake made for console rather than them just trying to slap the PSP version onto the system.

I agree with ya, but one correction, it’s a “Remaster”, not a full on remake. The Shadow of The Colossus remake is a remake. The MGS collection with Peace Walker is a remaster. They’re still using PSP assets, just upscaled to look better on an HD tv.
There's actually a particularly weird version of this process. There was a long period of time where Square-Enix would port the mobile versions of their older games to Steam. Which makes little sense when you consider the conversion being from NES/SNES to cell phone to PC.
I think with the Chrono Trigger version that's on steam there's a few more console between the conversion to SNES and PC. Think it also has PS1 and the DS ports in between.
nope. they badically just always ported from their most recent ports. for final fantasy games, it usually went something like nes/snes -> ps1 -> wonderswan color -> gba -> psp/mobile -> pc. Wasn't a bad way to go about it either, since they kept all of the added features and enhancements from the previous ports, the lack of which is the reason I still refuse to touch the much praised pixel remasters.
I gotta say, I appreciate Sony keeping games coming out on the PS2. Some kids that weren't well off enough to get a PS3, could use the family's DVD player (the PS2) to play new games that were still being put out, at a price that they might be able to save up and buy.
My favorite handheld to console series is Ace Attorney. Just pretty cool seeing games with such great stories staying relevant through present-day systems. It feels better to play on DS/3D, but not much is sacrificed with console (it's a visual novel, what would you expect lol). In fact, Great Ace Attorney's 3DS entries were only available in Japan for some time. Other regions only got it last year (2021) on PC, PS4, and Switch. Hope Capcom releases the other DS/3DS entries some day soon.
The only thing about ace attorney at least in regards to the original trilogy remaster, I kinda like the og ds sprites better. Other than that it's the shit. I haven't played great ace attorney yet but have heard good things
@@KeybladeMasterAndy Yea. Have had quite a bit of fun playing around with “Everyone Objects” in the original mobile release of HD Trilogy. Also, the mobile ports give an official accessible way to play Investigations 1 :D
The only unreleased Ace Attorney game in the USA is now Edgeworth 2, but there is a full translated rom for it. It is the only game i ever played via rom and it was awesome.
If I had a favorite it's have to o be MGS Peace Walker on the Metal Gear Solid HD Collection. Metal Gear Solid was already a console series, and Peace Walker was a great substitute for portable. But it's just a MGS game. It's meant to be played on console.
It’s kind of humorous yet sad to think that back in 2009 while the Ratchet and Clank series was getting its most ambitious entry yet on ps3 with A crack in time, the Jak series was getting a final nail slammed in its coffin with a subpar follow up for ps2 and psp.
@@nchldmn Alas, both the original Ratchet trilogy and the Jak trilogy got hella rough ports on PS3, the former of which being enough to convince a friend of mine that the Ratchet & Clank series as a whole is awful.

I like how Persona 4 went from PS2 to having an enhanced version on the PS Vita, and then that enhanced version got released on Steam and now it's going to be on modern consoles as well
Not sure if it's been done already but I hope Scott does a console to Portable because there are some ports that make me go "Damn how they manage that?". Test drive unlimited being a good example.
Xenoblade Chronicles 3D honestly wasn't really impressive at all. The New 3DS was way more powerful than people think. Far more powerful than the original 3DS and in several aspects even the Wii. Hyrule Warriors Legend was a far more impressive port. A Wii U game with tons of enemies on screen nearly at all times ported to not just the New 3DS but also the original 3DS with extra content on top of that.
I've been playing the Xbox 360 version of Metal Gear Solid: Peace Walker recently and that's a PSP conversion that's extremely welcome. The bump in resolution and going from 20 fps to 60 is a godsend, and having a second analog stick to aim instead of using the face buttons makes the game control so much better. The downside is nearly everything about the game screams handheld game from it's visuals to it's mission design, enemy ai behavior, and Snake's moveset. I'd say it's still a good game, but stealthing around isn't nearly as satisfying as the other main entries in the series.
@@Netsirk96 Peace walker's problem is how repetitive it is. For something you play for 30 minutes on the go, it's not bad, but the missions and everything don't work quite as well as it should. I do wish they remastered Dissidia final fantasy, though.
Kingdom Hearts has a really interesting history of handheld to console games. Chain of Memories remake, then Birth by Sleep in the collections. Having JUST the cutscenes of 358/2 in the collection instead of the game.
John Smith It definitely is. For one, the green lines are visible around his right arm. Secondly, he has said he uses green screen and photoshop for these sorts of less than 2 seconds gags (it waa in a Scott Stash's video dedicated to how he edits them).
15:40 the flashing red lights on the 3ds imply that either Scott added this bit to the script last minute and didn't care to charge it or it took him almost the 3ds' entire battery life to get a take he was happy with

@@FindingsOfAnArmouredMind what makes you think its a green screen? That doesn't even make sense. If you said special effects that would be one thing. You'd still be wrong but just saying green screen makes no sense.
It's green screen. Scott himself said it in a Scott Stash's video where he explained how he makes these gags. He uses both photoshop (to create the broken object) and green screen to make it appear that he broke it. For the record, the green lines are noticeable around his right arm.
I noticed in modern days the only "handheld" getting the handheld treatment vs the console treatment is the smartphone. Both the Switch and the Steam Deck can just play the normal games. I feel like Curse of the Moon is the handheld Bloodstained and Ritual of the Night is the console version.
And even then, we don't exactly see mobile companions to games like God of War or Spider-Man. And not just because they're on the Steam Deck, but because they don't want to try to do that kind of thing for big games anymore.
You know Scott is doing something right if I can go to any video of Scott's old or new and it'll keep me entertained throughout the whole thing even if I already watched it, I'll give it a rewatch, That's how amazing his videos are.
I never really thought much before about how the limitations of a handheld can actually contribute to the charm of a game. Not only does it make the experience more novel, it also forces the developer to break their traditional mold.
"These games are meant to be played in an environment where you're not expecting as much from them." Spot-on! I bought R&C Size Matters on PS2 back in the day and was mortified at how empty and lifeless the world was after the earlier 4 games. As well as the controls being somewhat vague and totally unlike what i'd come to expect from the series. Years later I bought the PSP version and was happy with it as a portable R&C.
One of the more interesting ones that should have been covered is Kingdom Hearts: Chain of Memories. A GBA game that was from the ground up remade for the PS2 with full voice acting added. And the PS2 remake is the one ported to the PS3 in the HD collection and later to the PS4 too.
@@NotJpTem 358/2 days and recoded would (supposedly) require alot of resources to be rebuilt. I mean, chain of memories uses only copy-paste rooms for gameplay, and reuses environments from kh1 and 2 for cutscenes.
Despite being a character creator disguised as a fan fiction generator disguised as a video game, miitopia is genuinely amazing, especially with the enhancements the switch port brought. Of course, there’s makeup and wigs, which revolutionize mii making and are a must-have for any mii centered game from now on, as well as the horse, which adds a new overpowered move that relies on the main character’s class, but there’s also so much more, with the tower of despair, which tops of the already quite lengthy postgame with the most annoying enemy configurations the devs could think of, and outings, which are just pure mii humor.
"Take that!" Ace attorney is an awesome game. I never would have tried it if BF2042 was successful. My favorite franchise failing has opened me up to trying so many new games. I'm actually really happy about it.
The reverse is also pretty interesting as well. Like games designed for PS2 that made the jump to PSP. Test Drive Unlimited comes to mind. It made sure the huge open world and core gameplay made its way over intact. It's insanely impressive.
21:42 BRAZIL MENTIONED For real, SEGA and Tectoy did an wonderful job over here with all those conversions, not to mention the Genesis accessory which allowed to play Master System games on it, meaning it had access to an even bigger library, years before Nintendo considered the Super Game Boy idea.
Wow, someone blew their budget by using the Wilhelm and Howie scream in the end. Well done. The few content creators that care about their audience. We would have been understanding and content with just the Wilhelm, but you spoiled us.
I kinda wish Scott covered the Steam Deck. I know PC Gaming isn't his thing (even though he has a prebuilt) But I can see the Deck being an interesting topic for Scott to cover.

15:00 yeah I absolutely agree with that statement, I'd buy a good switch port of Kid Icarus Uprising without hesitation, especially as a left handet person.
I just remembered that Kingdom Hearts did this a couple times. Chain of Memories was put on the PS2 as Re: Chain of Memories and they added a bunch of cutscenes, a fight with Zexion, a much needed phase to the final boss, and more. I like that version a lot better. Dream Drop Distance went on consoles, too, but I don't think much changed with that one. I haven't played it yet, so I'm not sure. Also, I don't think it would be accurate to shorten the name of the console version to "Kingdom Hearts 3D".
Dream Drop Distance HD has additional Dream Eaters, different minigames without touchscreen use, and the camera is pulled back further from the characters. Also 60fps.
Thing is, Re:Chain of Memories isn't a port in the same sense as Scott is talking about. It's a remake of the GBA game. Now Dream Drop Distance is essentially a port on this sense with some fixes and probably extras to get it working on PS4.
Dream Drop Distance's gameplay and mechanics are obviously designed with the 3ds in mind. Even with the adjustments and polish on the PS4, it still felt awkward to play in there, especially with regards to the Reality Shift mechanic and the Flick Rush minigame.
For that ending, Scott understood that using sound effects to trigger our imagination and make it run wild can be a more successful horror tactic than showing something to begin with. Our own imaginations can scare us with JUST a little inspiration, without needing to censor or downplay anything and Scott's disgusted face only added to the creepy effect. Seriously It's surprising how such a bright and standard image can scare the piss out of you because the sounds make you imagine horrifying things.
I digress. The sound effects are funny af. It is his facial expression and how it slowly descends from calm to straight up katatonic/almost as if he's shocked after realizing he murdered someone. Nice acting skills tho.
18:05 But it's an amazing console version. We have a super in-depth mii customiser that lets you create so many things. And I hope Nintendo continues to expand on it
I think a series somewhat infamous for this practice was the Kingdom hearts series. First handheld game was Chain of Memories which was a card battle RPG. Had super crunchy Cutscenes on a handheld. Somehow got a whole remake/remaster on PS2 which is literally the best version to play with the only subtraction being the Multi-player battles. Birth By Sleep was on PSP and was fine for what it's worth. Later put on PS3 with the 2.5 collection and was smoother and better to play, only thing being taken away was the Multi-player for the Mirage Arena, but was compensated with buffing you up so you can handle the challenges by yourself. Dream Drop Distance on 3DS was released and was great. Later ported to PS4 with the 2.8 collection and literally nothing was taken away from the game except for the AR feature used for the dream eaters, and the special gold dream eaters you'd get for the AR cards released with the game was now put as in game recipes. Only games to not get this treatment was Re:Coded and 358/2 days which only got movies bundled in instead. Square was super weird about those sorts of ports and still kinda are.
I would love to see a video of you discussing launch titles vs end of generation titles, basically going over how much developers have improved after getting used to developing for the consoles
Whenever I think of a generational leap on the same hardware, I think of Halo 1 to Halo 2 first. Even though it didn't technically launch at the end, it was clear after the fact it was being shoved out the door before the new console would come out. The visual difference between it and 1 nowadays feels staggering especially with what we know now about its development issues. Series nowadays can be a good example of progression throughout a generation tech wise but I'll admit freely that didn't used to be the case. Even if a sequel appeared on the same hardware, there was no guarantee it was gonna look play or be notably better in some aspect. Even rarer are those that stumble after a sequel and somehow get it right before the generation passed. My example being Castlevania, a game I love, followed by Simons Quest which was pretty well disliked, but Castlevania 3 is considered a return to roots by others.
I’ve only played Vice City Stories on the PSP, and I didn’t mind. In fact, I’d argue Vice City Stories is BETTER than regular old Vice City. It took the criminal empire building on OG VC, and blew it up to such a degree that it’s arguably one of the best GTA mechanics that didn’t make it to future entries
The title "Size Matters" was also in reference to the fact that one of the main plot points in the game is shrinking down to be small for certain actions - the game still wasn't very good, but the fact that it was on a handheld wasn't the only reason for the title
omfg after getting my 3ds eshop games back, I replayed samus returns after playing dread and that had me thinking abt this topic a lot thx 4 existing Scott !
I honestly hope Nintendo port/remaster Fire Emblem Awakening and Echoes to Nintendo Switch soon. They did it for Monster Hunter Generations Ultimate some years ago, so it can be done
scott, you've made another banger. never stop doing what you love, this is why you're my favorite youtuber, you make literally everything interesting and enjoyable
You know, a lot of people want DS and 3DS games to be ported to the switch, whether through virtual console or as a straight up port. I understand and agree that the games should be preserved and it would be nice to be able to buy those older games at reasonable prices, but I feel like most games wouldn't work. And this video lays out all the resons I feel that way.
I feel like Scott is the kind of guy that can never run out of video ideas. Even though he's done most of the Nintendo consoles and more general topics like controllers and multiple games in franchise, he always manages to keep things interesting no matter how dull or obscure the topic is.

Scott, your wisdom never ceases to amaze me
On the other hand, he thinks the Master System was more powerful than the Game Gear, when it was the other way around, due only to the increased color palette.
And he's genuinely too stupid, or too lazy, to tell the difference between Streets of Rage on Master System and Game Gear.
This episode was a bit of a disappointment, really. Especially since he didn't cover Tearaway, which makes a great case for the Vita vs. the home edition.

I agree with ya, but one correction, it’s a “Remaster”, not a full on remake. The Shadow of The Colossus remake is a remake. The MGS collection with Peace Walker is a remaster. They’re still using PSP assets, just upscaled to look better on an HD tv.
Dude I don't give a crap about all that .

Smashing Drive on the GBA is unreasonably impressive.
@@ClarkKentai And also Super Monkey Ball Jr.!!!
Xenoblade 3D is still crazy to me
Midnight Club LA Remix could also be a good example
Though I suppose if you stop to think about it,
MGSV The Phantom Pain is basically an upgraded Peace Walker, although that's an extreme understatement
@@Netsirk96 Peace walker's problem is how repetitive it is. For something you play for 30 minutes on the go, it's not bad, but the missions and everything don't work quite as well as it should. I do wish they remastered Dissidia final fantasy, though.

I just noticed that Scott has never had a paid sponsorship from what Ive seen, which I can respect because I bet he has gotten a lot of offers.
He has merch and even made an episode that alludes that he’ll not get sponsored
I noticed in modern days the only "handheld" getting the handheld treatment vs the console treatment is the smartphone. Both the Switch and the Steam Deck can just play the normal games.
I feel like Curse of the Moon is the handheld Bloodstained and Ritual of the Night is the console version.
And even then, we don't exactly see mobile companions to games like God of War or Spider-Man. And not just because they're on the Steam Deck, but because they don't want to try to do that kind of thing for big games anymore.
Yeah. The switch was crazy at the time. Like, a game like Breath of the wild on a handheld 5 years ago was out of this world.
I love that Scott kept using the term "facelift" specifically when talking about Miitopia

I never really thought much before about how the limitations of a handheld can actually contribute to the charm of a game. Not only does it make the experience more novel, it also forces the developer to break their traditional mold.
Something about this episode feels really high quality, not sure how to put it. Really love it, Scott seriously is my favorite youtuber

Kingdom hearts chain of memories, birth by sleep, and dream drop distance all follow the rule.
That and Mercury Meltdown, a PSP game that got ported to PS2 as Mercury Meltdown Remix and to Wii as Mercury Meltdown Revolution.
Really? Didn't know that, I only played the GBA game briefly 🤔🤔
when they should've remade 358/2 days like that instead :(
@@NotJpTem 358/2 days and recoded would (supposedly) require alot of resources to be rebuilt. I mean, chain of memories uses only copy-paste rooms for gameplay, and reuses environments from kh1 and 2 for cutscenes.
The Miitopia segment was too short. That game was a masterpiece
The effort that went into this is apparent, it’s always amazing seeing the production value increase with every video
The reverse is also pretty interesting as well. Like games designed for PS2 that made the jump to PSP. Test Drive Unlimited comes to mind. It made sure the huge open world and core gameplay made its way over intact. It's insanely impressive.

Also don't forgot Disgaia 2 was ported to the PSP three years after the PS2 version
Don’t forget Birth by Sleep
Seriously It's surprising how such a bright and standard image can scare the piss out of you because the sounds make you imagine horrifying things.
bruh he was just thinking about being ant lmao
I digress. The sound effects are funny af. It is his facial expression and how it slowly descends from calm to straight up katatonic/almost as if he's shocked after realizing he murdered someone.
Nice acting skills tho.
the ending had two cartoon scream sound effects in it are you like good or something
FR, when Scott said: "just because something's small, doesn't mean they don't have a lot going on", I thought in a completely different direction...
I just found it funny lol
18:05 But it's an amazing console version. We have a super in-depth mii customiser that lets you create so many things. And I hope Nintendo continues to expand on it
My man Scott literally right hooked a perfectly working TV for a 2 second gag. Truly dedicated to his craft.
This is the last Scott video I'll watch before my senior year of High school. Thank you Scott for all the great videos over the years :)
I was watching scott yesterday and wanted a new video from one of my favourite RUclips. Thank you scott so much.
@@Gungho73 I almost listed halo 1 and 2 as an example 🤣 after your comment I regret not doing so

“I’d marry this game just to put it through divorce”
- Scott the G4OPOLY Woz
I’ve only played Vice City Stories on the PSP, and I didn’t mind. In fact, I’d argue Vice City Stories is BETTER than regular old Vice City. It took the criminal empire building on OG VC, and blew it up to such a degree that it’s arguably one of the best GTA mechanics that didn’t make it to future entries
not to mention VCS on PS2 is incredibly difficult to complete. there are quite a few missions that are ten times more difficult on the PS2 version.
I'd also argue the protagonist is a lot more interesting than Tommy Vercetti. How he interacts and butts heads with other characters is more dynamic.
The title "Size Matters" was also in reference to the fact that one of the main plot points in the game is shrinking down to be small for certain actions - the game still wasn't very good, but the fact that it was on a handheld wasn't the only reason for the title
Hence the name in other regions, "Ratchet & Clank: Your 🐓 Is Small"
