This video was a plea for the rights of Aboriginal Australians. The red shoes represent the Western way of life that the girl wears for a while, then rejects and returns to her own culture. Great music video, amazing song with Stevie Ray Vaughan on lead guitar. ❤
Ty for that info.. I assumed David had a motive ! That's why I have utmost respect and love the genius! I'm Big Beatle fan too. They always made love n freedom the theme in their writings. As w David also. Under Pressure n Heroes great signs of the times. Ppl in US don't realize what it means to be able to walk and talk freely on our streets. It is a memory of the US festival when the sun was setting and friendly fires were lit all around the crater. David Bowie began performing this song and people including myself began dancing. I heard somewhere he had arrived from being in Australia, probably true.
David Bowie was one of the biggest Humanitarian people you’d ever known, the reason he featured the Aboriginal people in this video was to shine light on them because their Lives Mattered too. David Bowie was against unfair racist mistreatment of fellow human beings. I remember him making MTV to show more black entertainers, and if they didn’t he’d boycott himself. As a black American man I love and respected what David Bowie stood for, may he rest in heaven.
Not much has changed for Aboriginal Australians. There are more in the workforce but they still have less opportunities than most Australians. Still, small steps I suppose. These days it's not just Aboriginal people, there is a lot of ageism and sexism. More male CEOS than female, more male representation than female in politics, that sort of thing. Australia is like a smaller version of America in some ways. This video was made only 16 years after they were granted citizenship by the way. Good old David, 6 years gone next Monday, R.I.P. great man.
Man I understand where you're coming from, just think how savage some still are in the world my daughter told me she was lesbian I still love her just because she's different peace out.
As an Aboriginal man, I really appreciate the fact that David Bowie loved everyone. I've always loved his music, this just makes me love his heart. Rest In Love & Peace David Bowie.
Let's hope there is someone to not replace Bowie, but follow in his foot steps for we need talent to regenerate itself, or we will end up with nothing but shit
Took my daughter to see him in Vancouver in 1984, she was 5, had red shoes and thought this song had been written for her. She danced in the aisle with her red shoes on.
Love this story 😁. I was only born in 88 but i have to say most of the music i like was produced before then. I do love 90s stuff. Most of todays is trash. Bowie is a legend..and im proud to say english 😎
In 1983 I was working in Saudi Arabia and every Friday we would receive Betamax tapes of MTV and The Tube. I can still remember watching this for the first time and thinking WTF!! Rewind, repeat, rewind, repeat. Still love it 40 years later....
I love this song.. but it's a commentary on racism.. the red shoes are a symbol of wealth..apparently this was filmed in Australia and the local dancing at the beginning was making fun of the aboriginals in the video.. although it was edited is was a true depiction of racism... I love this song.. the seriousness of the words
David Bowie's voice is like heaven. I appreciate that this video was made in Australia covering the issues of racism and oppression against the aboriginal people's. David Bowie is a true legend in his own right!
And when I watched this video in 1983, I thought that this video was recorded in the USA and was about American indian tribes, and a few years later discovered, that was recorded in Australia and was about the poor aboriginals... really the bad guys were Australians and not the Americans, poor aboriginals oppressed like the American Indians!🤔🤔
Peter Raja Morgan exactly what have the government done in the last 10 years to help indigenous people? Oh that's right, we had a prime minister that called their lives a 'lifestyle choice' and have reduced or taken away funding to help aboriginals. You can be both proud of your country and acknowledge that it needs to do better.
@Peter Raja Morgannot really. What's reported in the MSM outlets especially ones owned by Fox News and in the history books does not reflect accurately how badly our government has and still continues to treat the Aboriginal people. The standard response by the government and general public is to "get over it".
It's funny that when this album came out critics accused Bowie of selling out. The man knew good music and was never afraid to experiment. A true musical icon. All of his songs are timeless!
RIP David Bowie (January 8, 1947 - January 10, 2016), aged 69 And RIP Stevie Ray Vaughan (October 3, 1954 - August 27, 1990), aged 35 You both will be remembered as legends
@Melissa Bonenge Yes I was a young girl like 6 or so and I faintly remember he died in a helicopter crash. My brother has just been born, and my mom made a big deal about how SRV was her age.
@@notimportant1006 Yes, in a helicopter crash after a gig. Like Buddy Holly, he took the last seat on a flight he wasn't supposed to be on. Eric Clapton should've been on that flight. He had a dream the night before that he saw himself at his funeral. There will never be another like him.
@@Steelers2116 such a strange coincidence...not even just about the vision but about the fact Eric clapton was supposed to be on the flight! Kinda similar to buddy Holly's situation 🤔...after a gig too. Crazy how many older artists died of air malfunctions
Sadly, it "doesnt sound like it was recorded yesterday" because nowadays they would put way less Delay and reverb on his voice, and everything would be stuck "to the grid" ... Without mentioning pop songs have less riffs and solos 😳 (Let's remember Let's Dance was DB take on mainstream music)
I'm Australian and I can tell you this film clip is very powerful and represents the psychic connection the aboriginal people have towards the land and how they understand the message of love and peace over feature comforts and materialism. They really are incredible people. Very spiritual and very talented!
Thanks for the comment about the music video. As a teen, I often played this album and danced carefree, so long as no one was around. Today might have been the first time of seeing the video and I wonder about it (where it was made, how the people involved were recruited and what they were prepared or directed to do, as well as the possible meanings of all the scenes taken together).
This clip was filmed during the Serious Moonlight tour. The pub scene is at the Carinda Hotel, which is a long way from Sydney. A very long way. Almost the outback and it was up for sale last year for $220,000. Fun fact.
I am glad this song came around in my lifetime. The day i herd that David Bowie had passed, i cried like a baby. All his songs are unforgettable. To the legendary David Bowie. Thank you for the music. And forever rest in peace.💐💐💐💐💐💐
Did you know Stevie ray Vaughn actually sued Bowie for pretending to play the solo in the song. As he couldn’t be in the video because he was on tour and didn’t appreciate Bowie acting like he was the actual guitarist on the track. Even so both legends dearly missed
This song right here is my childhood! Born in the 70s, raised in the 80s and I remember just starting secondary school when this came out. What a TIME! Take me back! ❤❤❤. I definitely had a crush on David Bowie
Yes it's 2024 but how easy it is to go back many years and get down to Bowie and his brilliant music. Bowie is gone but he will never be forgotten. I'm a Bowie fan for the rest of my life . How about all of you out there *
Is he gone? Good riddance with the asshole, but love the music. Cutting SRV out? "Unnnn fooor givable---in every wayyyyy." Where's Bowie's grave? I have a pot of piss for it.
My son(30) and his friends are amazed at the music I grew up with. So I pop in A Reality Tour DVD, they can't stop watching and are saying, we barely heard of the Bowie guy, yet he is much better than anyone today.
Luckily I was alive when David Bowie was around I was in my twenties when he was at his prime and to this day I still listen to his music One of my favorites He is timeless
Oh I was alive for sure. This song would come on in the club (decades ago) and we would jump up and dance our way to the dance floor. Every Thursday, Friday and Saturday night. Sundays were for recuperating. 😂
My late step father was a muso, and proclaimed in the early eighties that D B was way....way...ahead of his times. I agreed then, and I can now see why, ...so much of his music was esoteric, meaningful...etcetra..many levels
I accidentally saw SRV in Louisville literally just before he was killed (late '89 or '90). I had zero interest in either him or "The Blues" as a snotty 19 yr old skater punk kid from SoCal, but fortunately I had an older & much wiser friend who had a friend with xtra tix, so I said "whatever", because of course I did 😂, & went. I don't use the phrase "I was humbled" lightly or as hyperbole. We were RIDICULOUSLY front & center (maybe 3 rows back? No more than 5), & just **seeing** him play was every bit (if not more, to my uninitiated ears) as mesmerizing as hearing him play. He was 1 of a kind, fersure. I don't think I said 3 words after the show, I just looked like ----> 😳 lol...& then I didn't shut up about it until, well ever, apparently. 😁 RIP King
I'm unfortunately too young to have ever seen Bowie live, but I was fortunate to see Nile Rogers and Chic perform this and Modern Love live this summer. Best concert I've been to.
I went to see Nile Rogers at the 02, with the specific aim of hearing this song live. I was not disappointed. Seeing 12,000 people dance to this was a sight to behold.
My father and I had an emotionally stifled relationship but connected in depth through music, my dad took me to see Bowie in 1987, I was way to little not only to have remembered it but also to appreciate it, we saw him again on the reality tour in Singapore 2003. Both Bowie and my dad are deceased now so those are memories seared into the embers of my mind’s eye 🤗
Stevie nailed this solo. He only plays when needed. He gives plenty of room for the groove on f this song but he adds enough to make you want more. And then he adds it in and starts playing over the stops. Genius. This is easily one of my favourite SRVA solos.
I agree. The other thing that I like about his playing (I'm not a dedicated fan or anything, just an ordinary Joe) is the volume he can get from a single note and the range this gives him. I don't know what SRV's rig was barring the elderly Strat but that tone really is mighty.
This song was the biggest hit of David's comeback career in 1983 !I couldn't get enough of the melody or the lyrics David's voice really suited this rhythm!
David Bowie worked with Nile Rodgers who helped provide a guitar solo during the recording of the song. Including having songwriting credits with him. An inseparable duo!
A nearly 40-year-old classic and still sounds as great as it did in the early-to-mid 80s. Bowie was one cool dude, a true original. Well done, Mr Bowie. You really made the grade.
My mom would play this album when I was little starting around 5yrs old.... and of course older. We would dance all over the living room, those are some of my happiest moments!
RIP MR. BOWIE. THANK YOU FOR BRINGING JOY TO THE WORLD. "I sometimes forget that I was created for Joy. My mind is too busy. My Heart is too heavy for me to remember that I have been called to dance the Sacred dance of life. I was created to smile To Love To be lifted up And to lift others up. O’ Sacred One Untangle my feet from all that ensnares. Free my soul. That we might Dance and that our dancing might be contagious." ~Hafiz, Persian 14th Century poet
In 1997, I was in the middle of Costa Rica far from any tourist traveled paths & and while we were having lunch in a teeny little diner in a jungle clearing, this song was playing. It's hard to paint the picture of the situation, but at the time it was amazing ~
awesome! around what city/jungle? I studied in heredia and samara in 2011. I picture the scenery of volcano arenal as I read your post. I miss it. pura vida
Is the only good song the guy released that he didnt ruin with his "singing" style, the other few a good because somebody with actual talent covered them, like Tears for Fears o even Jakob Dylan, that is how low his standard was, great writers to a terrible singer with atrocious style, he should have remain an actor
What a legend is David Bowie. Realised this in my early teens. The first album I wanted to buy was David Bowie, but didn’t have the pocket money. What a music prodigy he became. Sadly missed ❤️🇦🇺
@@guverzolaI think Stevie and Bowie were at odds at this point. SRV opted not to do the Serious Moonlight tour as Bowie’s restrictions were too outrageous.
I’m ashamed to admit that I never listened to David Bowie until this song played on the 80s playlist at work just recently. What an amazing song! Quickly added it to my playlist.
No need to be ashamed, better late than never. I'm discovering artists all the time, many before I was born that are excellent, Django Reinhardt one such artist. A mate of mine got me onto Jimmy Reed back in the 90s'. I finally caught on to the 'Band' in the late 90's after seeing and being floored watching the 'Last Waltz' concert DVD. It goes on like that. One good thing about music being so crappy today is that you can seek out great music from decades long gone.
How have I NEVER heard of this banger until yesterday when I heard it on the radio? I didn’t even know Bowie had it in him 🪩 I’m glad that this song exists! RIP David Bowie
OMG - it's 2023 and I'm a 1969 born lady who still LOVES Bowie so very much. It still shocks me that such an amazing talent and spirit has left us. Thank you Mr Bowie for ALL the INCREDIBLE music and love you have given to (me & ) the world. xxxxx ❤
I loved every Bowie song growing up. In a 1999 BBC interview, he said he didn't see himself as part of the global music industry. That's a very humble statement. He changed it for the better in so many ways. He'll be remembered for years to come.
@Juan Perez Yeah, all those drug killer, look at cartels that kill and torture you. Even the killers who act against the indigenous peoples. How many will be that hundreds or thousands?
This was a pretty big stylistic shift for Bowie who had been doing eclectic art rock for the last several years. To suddenly come out with a deliberately commercial album like Let's Dance made a lot of old Bowie fans unhappy.
Maybe he just went back to his home planet..? The guy never seemed to age , had a style no one on earth had ever heard or seen, and Literally outed himself to be a spaceman .. just saying
One of the Greatest Videos Ever. The 80's were a special time, not duplicated. When MTV was MTV, before the Corporate Conglomerates took it over for Global Social Programming.
A true testament to David Bowies exceptional compositions and musical arrangements that span decades! A truly gifted musician and a great humanitarian❤RIP SIR
this song represents every crazy bohemian night , drinking, partying and dancing to the dawn from back in the 90's til NOW!!!, that's right. I know there is this human who needs to pretend is a grown up and be responsible, however, there is always some nights every now and then were I open a bottle of vodka, light a cigar and jam this song with every feel I have. Thanks David Bowie for telling me to put on my dance shoes and dance the blues . RIP legend

That is because the industry sunk in the 70s and this was the tip of the boat right before it sinks to the bottom, the opposite of what you mean, I feel you though, when standars do go down we tend to cling to the lesser bad things, sad.
No ! ?The music industry in the 70s did not sink as it generated greater than life songs you don't see in the 80s such as: Me & Bobby McGee by Janis Joplin; Don't Pull Your Love by Hamilton, Joe Frank, & Reynolds; Nights are Forever by England Dan and John Ford Coley; American Woman by The Guess Who; Don't Leave Me This Way by Thelma Hopkins; When I Need You by Leo Sayer; Hotel California by The Eagles; Me & Mrs Jones by Billy Paul; Seasons in the Sun by Terry Jacks; Kung Fu Fighting by Carl Douglas, and we don't forget amazing music by The Bee Gees, The Carpenters, Chicago, Elton John, and more ... Therefore, how can you say the 70s music sunk ??!! You gotta be kidding !
Thanks for the list, I''ll check it out! I invite you to read again what I wrote, you'll find yourself agreeing. I will say that by sunk I mean the past tense of sinking, as in the last remnant of the good stuff, therefore, the tip of the boat in the 80s means it never came back after that, so, fully sunk in the 80s. See? Nuance and moderation, not like saying it died, also the 70s ended in 79, december, and what you're mentioning is for sure before 12/79. But don't take my word for it, some people say it really died with the 60s and I agree with that, because, you see, for me commercial music is too tampered with, I only respect street and never published performers, the rest has too much pose and politics involved and you never know who's who and who wrote that, which is a shame, too many ghost writers, producers and purchase of rights and name signature of the works in the hand of a famous artist who created nothing. I can only go as far as to take their work as free entertainment. Anything else is a diservice to myself, and the human race, a petty division between me and everybody else. For what? A shitty song? A political statement made by a millionaire about poverty? Pff, not my thing. Serioulsy, read what I wrote and get the right inflexion. Although I'm glad you got so agravated since your list might have great stuff I dont know or cant find by name, thanks for that 😉, didn't mean anything but to state a subjective fact based on objective factual stuff. Black people made the basis for all the music I love and inspired me, but the industry gave them reach through anybody else, I hold no grudge, just the facts and appreciation where is truly due@@omarko9708
Actually, I find it insulting that he played it like it was him doing the solo instead of Stevie Ray. He treated Stevie like shit and Bowie was the one who insisted Stevie play on the song. I wish in retrospect, Stevie would have told Bowie to stick it!!!

@Peter Raja Morgan Very well!!!😊😊😊😊
Peter Raja Morgan exactly what have the government done in the last 10 years to help indigenous people? Oh that's right, we had a prime minister that called their lives a 'lifestyle choice' and have reduced or taken away funding to help aboriginals. You can be both proud of your country and acknowledge that it needs to do better.
@Peter Raja Morgannot really. What's reported in the MSM outlets especially ones owned by Fox News and in the history books does not reflect accurately how badly our government has and still continues to treat the Aboriginal people. The standard response by the government and general public is to "get over it".

Bullshit! It doesn’t

It's funny that when this album came out critics accused Bowie of selling out. The man knew good music and was never afraid to experiment. A true musical icon. All of his songs are timeless!
If the critics accuse you of selling out, you know you've done good.

You know this song is 37 years old and it sounds like it was just recorded yesterday. Now that is what music is supposed to sound like.
Still slaps
Steevie Ray Vaughan jump's out in final solo...
I couldn't agree more timeless.
Don't sound like it was recorded yesterday, but still a masterpiece.
I'm Australian and I can tell you this film clip is very powerful and represents the psychic connection the aboriginal people have towards the land and how they understand the message of love and peace over feature comforts and materialism. They really are incredible people. Very spiritual and very talented!
I am not Australian but I am a native of my country, I feel Bowie truly has connectivity and soul, I feel his soul.
Yes I believe the Aboriginal people are like that and I think they know how to use a boomerang
Did you get something to come back to you if you throw something like that to come back to you like that. Just like music. You're doing all right😂

One of the greatest music clips off all time on many levels, primarily giving aboriginal Australians a deserved spotlight, and secondly - it's Bowie.
My late step father was a muso, and proclaimed in the early eighties that D B was way....way...ahead of his times. I agreed then, and I can now see why, ...so much of his music was esoteric, meaningful...etcetra..many levels
You can thank Nile Rogers for this one too

😁 RIP King
Interesting that both srv and nile rodgers were playing on this track
apparently when SRV first saw this clip, he was incredibly pissed, because it looks like bowie is playing his solo

My three reasons for guitar Hendrix, Page and SRV
I think Nile Rogers played bits too
I agree. The other thing that I like about his playing (I'm not a dedicated fan or anything, just an ordinary Joe) is the volume he can get from a single note and the range this gives him.

A 40-year-old song still shines as one of the top 100 songs of its decade

Carsdaman D Stevie ray died in 1990 in a helicopter crash and David died in 2016 from liver cancer.
And Alan Rickman, born and gone almost at the same time as Bowie
@Golden Cube I was TODAY years old when I found out SRV played that solo. I should have known, immediately recognized the tone and sound afterwards...I always heard it, always knew somewhere in my heart...I just got fooled...
LOL - it also happens to be my birthday, so I am actually 41 years old today. :D
1:43 my goodness, David Bowie had so much charisma, tons of in his appearance, his voice, and in his songs. for sure he was the greatest and most perfect pop and rock star who has ever lived. he also was a self-made billionaire - I forgot. he was also an incredible musician and actor. what an artist.
Super Fan ... totally agree ... I hope my YT Bowie songs as a one man band makes him smile ... Im lucky to be able to make the connection with his spirit.
I adore him, and have a lot of respect for him and for other outstanding artists who deserve it. Because I am a music person. I am not a David Bowie fanatic though, but I love his music from time to time.
Yeah check them out and that video or he's singing Modern Love he sings and he says I never say bye-bye and he waves bye bye that's another good one too
I loved how the video showed that even thought they could afford all the things that the wealthy had, the truest joy was just being who they were and having simplicity. That's what I got from the video the first time it aired. LOVE THIS!
Totally Agree ... Bowie Fans are ace .. Fantastic ... I love doing his covers on YT ... such a great artist ... its great to connect with his genius
David Bowie. Whatever he did, he did it perfect.
This took me back to the days of watching MTV videos as a kid. One of my favorite from David Bowie
