@Anderson Cooper I did not know that. I read now that he had sex with underage groupies, but this was consensual sex, not rape. Of course, I realize that consensual sex with minors does not exist - for a good reason! Nevertheless, the case is different for me when a 40 year old man has sex with a child. Brilliant recording and such a seductive, hot and enigmatic video (and of course perfectly paced to the various turns of the song. This is a massively enticing piece of film, both to the mind and to our desires. Also, a genuine feeling of foreboding and danger that's always worked on me with this song (for example in the basslines, and in his voice in the third verse, from two minutes flat onwards).
The intro is played by Nile Rogers the end guitar solo is played by Stevie Ray Vaughan. Produced by Nile, co-writer Iggy Pop. After 35 (or so) years this song still gives me goose bumps.
The Beach scene: Hard to imagine now that back in 83 this was considered pushing the boundaries of what is and what is not TV-friendly. Still one of my fave videos of all time.
The original beach scene was much hotter - it also featured shots of their butts and hints of their private parts and a full view of her breasts. That version was regularly aired in my country in 1983, so I still remember it. This is the toned down version - the edit was a result of public criticism in some countries, especially the USA, where Bowie lived at the time.
This song is the reason I am called “China”, as my dad is such a fan. On the 1st May, I celebrate my 21st birthday, and David has turned out to be my hero. Bowie was his own Genre🤷🏼♀️He got such clear visions that just came out of the cosmos catapulting him into such diverse tunes like this one. Each of his projects were so unique and musically/lyrically rhythmically perfect, so suited to the times they were written for. I love how unique his voice was. He had a haunting quality to it and I think he was a master lyricist. He was also a great dresser he wore very cool and sometimes traditional; suit skinny tie and wool overcoat for example. He definitely marched to the beat of his own drum.

I hear you, girl, and I'm 80 years old and still dancing to this.
@@ronquan5382 You go girl ! ( rely thank you )
Mr Bowie, You will always be a legend. RIP my friend.
I grew up with you China girl Bowie was one of the best ❤❤❤
The level of romance in this song is immense.
Unlike Please Mr Gravedigger
The intro is played by Nile Rogers the end guitar solo is played by Stevie Ray Vaughan. Produced by Nile, co-writer Iggy Pop. After 35 (or so) years this song still gives me goose bumps.
All of David Bowie's songs are gems, it's impossible to turn some down. And i have to give a huge credit to Stevie Vaugh as well😉
Masterpiece. Brilliant voice. Just stunning.
The Beach scene: Hard to imagine now that back in 83 this was considered pushing the boundaries of what is and what is not TV-friendly. Still one of my fave videos of all time.
It's not TV.
A week today I will be getting a tattoo as a heartfelt tribute. The world will never be the same again. I wish I could of told you my story while you were here. I belonged in a different era. Love you, Starman.
China white =heroine white girl = Cocaine....Iggy Pop wrote this about mixing the2 thus speedballs
@@PC-jq2hn To be fair, that's only what Nile Rodgers *_imagined_* the song was about, David Bowie and Iggy Pop didn't say that.
Un estilo de vida
This song brings back memories of a fun time in my life and it makes me sad that those days are over.

After 4 decades of having seen this on MTV, I still love it. Bowie was one of the best during that great era of music.
🙋✨
Anyone know the reasoning behind Bowie's "spit" noise in the line _"and I could pretend"_ at 1:33 it's just before the word "pretend".
I explained exactly this to a friend the other day 😄
Definitely a genre of his own.
He co writed it with Iggy Pop, when they were living together in West-Berlin. This song is based on Iggy's affair with a vietnamese woman.
The genius of David Bowie was his originality, there really was no one else around quite like him.
Don't think there ever will be again.
We could say that about a couple billion human primates. The rest just breed and consume.
I'm 70 now and I love this song god bless from limerick Ireland 🇮🇪 🙏 ❤❤
Bowie had such an interesting beauty to him
This song is really underrated, it deserves more views.
No, because then the cancel culture cancer will creep in and destroy poor Bowie years after he died.
There’s another version of the same video on RUclips, been posted longer.
@@DAVIDInitiative it still deserves way more views
@@DAVIDInitiative screw the liberals and their cancel culture
Underrated? On what planet? This was a huge hit back in the day.
Bowie is a fabulous musician, the bass is awsome.
He was and is a musical genius, the king of creativity, his talent will never be surpassed. R.I.P Mr Bowie
both this man and woman are exceptionally beautiful
A phantom and figment, a mist. Looks are but a "vapor" according to the Bible.
@@davidb2206 looks certainly are temporary!
When that video came out I wished that it had been me he had been kissing
Had such a terrible crush on him then. He was so sexy and good-looking.
Man and woman? I only see a woman and an androgynous space alien.
@@davidb2206 what the Bible has to say about life is basically that it's worthless in comparison with eternity. Such a message makes the creation worthless too, and the creator look like a fool. Religions who claim to speak in God's name are just a whole lot of nonsense . Men are way too small to understand god and what god made by life. I will never stop praising god but don't tell me about religions which are just an instrument of power.
"China Girl" and "This is not America" is my favourite songs!!!
This is my favorite song by David Bowie. The beat and melody is what makes it so appealing imo. The guitars are phenomenal.❤❤❤❤😊. Sorely missed 😢
It's by Iggy Pop, actually.
Courtesy of Stevie Ray Vaughan!
THIS SONG MAKES ME SO HAPPY,RIP DAVID❤
Ah, that smile at 1:18 ...!!!! so much love... SO, David Bowie...so much subtleness and sincerity in that smile and look
That smile absolutely melts me!
I can’t see anybody as good that he was, he was in a class of his own. This song by the way just a masterpiece by its own.
The song is from Iggy Pop
A great assessment
@@16ploog79 IT WAS A CO WRITE
@@stevemason7388 Exactly. Just like he co-wrote "Fame" with John Lennon
The time eith TIM MACHINE Was a waste of time
Fun fact: Stevie Ray Vaughan played guitar on this entire album. Bowie had asked him to go on tour with him to promote the album, but Stevie said, “thanks man, but I got this little band out of Texas, and we’re going to try this record thing out.”
1983
That's not how it went... Bowie didn't want to pay or credit him his worth so he said "no thanks"
IS that Stevie with the intro guitar? Love the way this song begins
@@captinbeyond I believe that's Nile Rogers but you'd have to check

This little china girl's name is Geeling Ng. She was a 23-year-old cook, in the salad section, at The Bayswater Brasserie in Sidney, with no acting experience when she auditioned for the role.Following her appearance in the video, the two had a brief affair. She has appeared in Mad Max (1985), Illustrious Energy (1988) and Desperate Enemies (1993). She was a host of the music television show Kulture Shock.

I Have my high school China Girl for 15 years~ (Yes she's Chinese American)
She LOVES David Bowie thanks to me introducing her from Labyrinth by Jim Henson and she fell in love with this song after I showed this to her lol,
She didn't even say at 1:15 is racist, she found it cute and playful~ X3
X3 haha so true Babe lol and yup me and him are a couple since we shared common interests in stuff and when he shown labyrinth i became a fan of David bowies songs
I envy you 😢
I really like the Intro... Asian musical notes that introduces you to whole song! Long life for David Bowie
Nile Rogers produced the album and put those notes in there. The original 1977 version by Iggy Pop (which was produced by David Bowie) doesn't have them.
did you know it's a cover of Iggy Pop's song?
@@cheeseandonions9558 Not really. David Bowie wrote the song and had Iggy Pop record. "China Girl" is a song that Bowie wrote and then gave to Iggy. Since he and Iggy were financially broke after their Berlin period Bowie made a pop album that was sure to be a hit and included his song that Iggy recorded so they could share the royalties of "Let's Dance".
He’s such a talented and handsome music artist 🥰
Agreed I’m in love with him
