I was 20 when this song was released and I liked it a lot. Boy George's look was shocking and I remember spending one or two minutes thinking about the topic. I arrived to the conclusion that I didn't liked it. Then I accepted it was his style and kept listening his songs regulary. After 42 years I have been thinking about those days and the reason for all that amazing 80's music. In my opinion one possible reason is people at that time were much more open-minded and tolerant than today. Music industry let groups be theirselves, arrange songs their way, create and develop his own identity. They knew people will love that music. Talking Heads, The Cure, Spandau Ballet, Simple Minds, and so many more: each group different, each group having his own sound. I remember one day I was listening a new group called Bob Marley & The Wailers and his new and amazing sound. My mother came to my room and said she liked that music. She was just an open-minded 60 years old woman.
Culture Club was one of the groups that defined the 80's, as a kid I don't remember ever questioning Boy George's sexuality, I don't think I even cared cause it didn't matter because his singing voice was impeccable.

I dont think kids today understand that. The 80s were a very expressive decade but gays were still ridiculed openly and often the recipients of a lot of hatred. Even liking boy George opened you to torture so for every album he sold theres probably 10 he didn't sell because fans were afraid to paint targets on themselves
You got that right there is to much hipperqutes in the world we live in today in the 1980s we had none of that and I'm here in New Zealand but TODAY'S WORLD where ever you go there is ALLWAYS someone running someone down no matter where you go all what you look like
well initially he claimed to 'be a man and only a man' not a cross-dresser or gay, this make-up stuff was just for show....only later did he 'come out'
Believe it or not, he has said he was uncomfortable then with putting this song out as a single. He thought it would be too personal for pop radio in 1982.
@Toxic Sheeple lol no hes not! Products are changed once they become famous. But George has always been dressing up even before CC started. That's the difference
My dad passed away yesterday march 16, this was his favorite song and it reminded him of a friend that also passed away This song is helping me to deal with the sadness, but i still feel like theres now a void in my life, as if a lot was lost
My dad didn’t care for much of the music I listened to, but he actually liked Boy George’s voice immensely. He said, “I don’t much like how he dresses but he’s got a damn good voice!” How right my Old Man was!!!
Bet he could fetch a pretty penny for this particular ensemble if he wanted to bolster his retirement income. Hell, he could probably even start his own pajama / karategi fashion brand. I haven't googled the idea, so for all I know he already has...Oh, and the music was pretty cool too
I absolutely love it that Boy George is not afraid to be who he is. He's totally awesome and I love him so much. Ty Boy George for all the great music and memories.
He’s definitely special and has paved a way for others who’ve felt different their entire lives, to be true to themselves. It was brave of him to do so back in the day.

Nothing but admiration for Boy George. I am old enough to know what it was like living in 80s UK. He represented himself and all that he was in a time when not only being gay was unaccepted but being different from mainstream. He pioneered and took the abuse paving the way for people now in this day to not fear being who they are. I am straight but can fully appreciate hiw him being him in the 80s allowed me to be me. Basically he is not just a gay icon but a human icon, oh and his music was some of the best in what is the greatest era of music
Same. I'm just glad they played this stuff on Top of the Pops so we could at least get exposure. Other favs. of mine are Erasure and the Pet Shop Boys. Looking back I realize why I had so few friends, but I don't care.
Culture Club, Boy Georges beautiful voice and personality, no fake, no shitty twitter, no cell, just music and people. No way to explain my kids what the feeling in the 80ies was...
You’re trying to say it was genuine back then - for the most part. Celebrities these days don’t get off-screen time and have to constantly preserve a plastic image. There is no longer organic This or That.
@@CarlosLopez-ob8rk Yep! Just like how authentic the original Degrassi High was....no professional makeup or hair, no models, no 20 year olds cast as high schoolers. What you saw is who they really were. The cast did their own hair, dressed in their own style etc. Much more relatable and authentic than the newer Degrassi High shows where things went exactly the way of models, fakery etc. 80s Degrassi was definitely more relatable than Saved By The Bell.
hard to believe u grew up watching this out of the other great songs that were out there....If i am going through the verge of a break up i would hear this song....lol
I agree. I may not agree with Boy George's lifestyle and I don't. Somehow, it was accepted because said lifestyle was not at the forefront of what this band was attempting to get across. Great musicianship was. That's what seems to not be understood by the left. Don't shove it in my face or to children.
The 80's was one of the greatest times in the history of music. Especially because of the wave of artists that the English scene gave us, artists like Boy George himself and his band, David Bowie, Duran Duran, Queen, and many more. Without a doubt, the British wave has given us and continues to give excellent music.
Reminds me so much of my past when I was a young lad grown up in Birmingham this song reminds me of so much of the abuse that I had at home and then living on the streets of London and Birmingham this song is so special to me now 53 all I think about is the past. Thank you George for giving me the courage to go through life

Not the 1st, there was The Police, Boomtown Rats and Blondie in the 70's..... And The Beatles had reggae tracks back in the 60's. Great song none the less.. ;)
I remember when it first came out, I was fascinated by the music and his voice, it hit my soul more than most people can at that time and now can understand why.
It's now August 2022. I fell in love with Boy George and Culture Club back when I was in high school. I went to see them in concert my senior year in 1985. I still ❤️ Boy George just as much now as I did on the 80's. "Do you really want to hurt me" is still a true CLASSIC in my book!!!🥰❤💯 Who agrees with me in 2022?
August 3, 2022 and I’m watching! I’m quite a bit older than you, my senior year was 1972, but I love all types of music. ‘Do you really want to hurt me’ is definitely one of those songs that brings back memories of the 80’s. Good memories! ❤️
When the band discovered they had some spare studio time during a recording session for the PETER POWELL show on BBC Radio One, they came up with the mellow reggae beat and put the song together. MIKEY CRAIG, the group's bassist, added a Caribbean flavour to the music. They wrote the songs for their first album together, with lyrics written by vocalist BOY GEORGE. He later claimed that he wrote the lyrics for this song about his relationship with their drummer, JON MOSS. They had an affair for about six years that was kept secret from the public, and George was frequently hurt and anxious as a result.
I really overlooked this song when it came out. I didn’t dislike it, just never thought it was anything special. I regret that. This is beautiful and Boy George is so incredibly talented. Such great style and such an easy going sound. He really deserved his stardom.
I’m a 90s baby and I would’ve loved to have grown up with CC. It’s ok if you weren’t Big on this at first. I first heard this on Shrek (I know cheesy) as the gingerbread man sang it) then i found it years later online. I thought it was just ok at first but then it grew on me and I love it now.
What a coincidence…. Without a clue I sat at Al Hirschfeld Broadway musical „moulin rouge“ and boy George performed as an actor. And on top of that he performed this song at the end… what a magic moment! Goosebumps
Still sends shivers down my spine. I first heard this on nighttime radio one before the masses. I feel that it's a pity they couldn't continue along these lines, but music became very commercialised at the end of 82 with the introduction of commercial radio stations across the UK.
It is, isn't it? The more I've listened to this lately, the more I'm captivated by how hauntingly beautiful his voice is in this song. Yes, many of his songs showcase the beauty of his voice, but this song in particular really makes me appreciate how much talent and skill he has as a singer.
I remember being a young teen when this song and it's video were released on MTV. I'm 51 years old now. And when I see this video, at the 00.34 second mark, I still have that same "What in the entirety of FUCK?!" moment.
I am so happy I was in high school in the 80's this was by far the best time to be that age. The music and women were awesome. The Great ole days. The world needs to go back to the 80's !!!!
I remembered U2, Culture Club, Cindy Lauper, Madonna, as a French we had the rita mitsouko ruclips.net/video/fGZRVGlGZ6A/видео.html or Indochine ruclips.net/video/265xQjS8Q9M/видео.html ... those were wonderful years ...
My Mom loved this song. I remember, as a _very_ little boy, born in 1987, her listening to it and singing it to me in the early nineties when things weren't so great... I miss her a lot, but I hope she's at peace now.

35 years later Boy Geotge still shows us the future ... a real artist's soul, one of the really great men of the 1980's.
I remember in83was 17 Im52now still love this song and group ❤️💙
Boy George took a lot of sh** in the 80s and was ahead of his time...the whole group was. Give Culture Club the recognition they deserve, folks. 🙌🏾❤️

Bruh there’s white people with blackface in this video. How ahead of their time we’re they really?
I dont think kids today understand that. The 80s were a very expressive decade but gays were still ridiculed openly and often the recipients of a lot of hatred. Even liking boy George opened you to torture so for every album he sold theres probably 10 he didn't sell because fans were afraid to paint targets on themselves
he & his band were one of the best
Boy George and Culture Club completely kicks ass. And his stroll, makeup, voice and bass line are incredible. I love you. God bless you always.

You got that right there is to much hipperqutes in the world we live in today in the 1980s we had none of that and I'm here in New Zealand but TODAY'S WORLD where ever you go there is ALLWAYS someone running someone down no matter where you go all what you look like
well initially he claimed to 'be a man and only a man'
not a cross-dresser or gay, this make-up stuff was
just for show....only later did he 'come out'
Believe it or not, he has said he was uncomfortable then with putting this song out as a single. He thought it would be too personal for pop radio in 1982.

This Man with he's own artistic still he's performed very artistic..we all are society..this is an icon with hes own caracters..good music.
My dad didn’t care for much of the music I listened to, but he actually liked Boy George’s voice immensely. He said, “I don’t much like how he dresses but he’s got a damn good voice!” How right my Old Man was!!!
Mine too. He was confused when he first saw Boy George on MTV. He loved country music so he really liked Karma Chameleon 😊
His voice is magical and he never had to rely on special effects to "help" it like so many others.
I fucking love how he dresses
Bet he could fetch a pretty penny for this particular ensemble if he wanted to bolster his retirement income. Hell, he could probably even start his own pajama / karategi fashion brand. I haven't googled the idea, so for all I know he already has...Oh, and the music was pretty cool too

And his voice was unrivaled.

He was the first artist that blew my mind when I was little! Used to love watch him perform - that reggae was in me already!
i don't remember this, you have some unique taste, you must of grew up in a interesting neighborhood, had interesting friends, you have youths ?

Great vocals and perfect song. Why there must be acceptance in society.

I'd judge him more cos he chained up a guy, whipped n sexually abused him but that's just me
Ugh he's the most wonderful person ever

It’s ok if you weren’t
Big on this at first. I first heard this on

The smooth voice of reason during an insane youth
Still sends shivers down my spine. I first heard this on nighttime radio one before the masses. I feel that it's a pity they couldn't continue along these lines, but music became very commercialised at the end of 82 with the introduction of commercial radio stations across the UK.
