When John Lennon died, I was too young to understand, when Freddie Mercury left us I was devastated. Then David Bowie went and I was in shock, in disbelief... I'm now 51 years old and I'm afraid of the day when the next of my HEROES will leave me alone.
I am here and I'm looking at her, and she is so beautiful. I can see it. This one moment where you know you are not a sad story. And you are alive, and you stand up and see all the lights on the buildings, everything that makes you wonder. And you're listening to that song on that drive with the people you love most in this world. And in this moment I swear, We are infinite.
the story behind this song is fantastic…this song was recorded in Berlin, right next to the Berlin Wall, & he wrote it about a man involved in the production of the album. this man was in love with a woman who lived on the other side of the Wall, the Soviet side, & David would watch them kiss and love one another through the fence every single day. David waited a long time until he revealed the story behind the song, as he didn’t want it to affect the lives of people he knew. anyways, to me, it’s all there in the lyrics. it’s about an impossible love, carried out with bold defiance. many of us have experienced that kind of love before, and that’s the reason why it connects with so many people. it’s a beautiful work, and it is THE favorite, among my many favorite Bowie songs.
This is one of those songs you play whenever you feel alone, whenever you're on a road trip and everyone is asleep in the back except for you, when you realize things are ending, things are going to be ok, things may not be ok, when you're in a calm mood, when your in an energetic mood when it's late at night and you're still awake, when you're at a sleep over and you're the first to wake up and can't go back to sleep, when you did something good in life, something that you feel proud of, that your relieved you did, when you're scared, when you're sad, when you're happy. I like the fact that when he says "Oh we can be Heroes" he looks at us and then when he says "just for one day" he tilts his head slightly to make us aware that despite everything, the Good things come to an end, Bowie truly sang with his soul.
The song is meant to be tragic (hence the quotation marks around the title). Meaning we will all eventually lose but we can still act bravely in the face of adversity.
"I, I can remember, standing by the wall. And the guns, shot above our heads, and we kissed as though nothing could fall. And the shame was on on the other side. Oh we can beat them, forever and ever" The greatest statement of people power that I have ever heard. Don't give up. Love will always win.
I, I wish you could swim Like the dolphins, like dolphins can swim Though nothing, nothing will keep us together We can beat them, for ever and ever Oh, we can be heroes just for one day I, I will be King And you, you will be Queen Though nothing will drive us away We can be heroes, just for one day We can be us, just for one day I, I can remember (I remember) Standing, by the wall (by the wall) And the guns, shot above our heads (over our heads) And we kissed, as though nothing could fall (nothing could fall) And the shame, was on the other side Oh, we can beat them, for ever and ever Then we could be heroes, just for one day … We can be heroes We can be heroes We can be heroes Just for one day
We are all same on the Other Side, always have been, always shall be. We're only different for each of the short times we're here. But even then, we each are a hero in our own way. We just need to find that way and who we can be that hero to. Leave the hero worship to the everyday heroes on Earth, friends....
My wife and I found an abandoned dog at the river last summer. He’s a mut of some sort with two different colored eyes. He would not leave our side and was so skittish, ragged and hungry looking. This song was playing when we decided to take him home. His name is Bowie. He’s my best friend.
I will be forever grateful for this song that literally saved my life. Depression is no joke and just imagining that we can be heroes, at least for a day, helped me move forward. I love you Bowie
For real though man. Music has a way to get out the parts of you you didn't know you had to express at times. Just to feel whole. Rip Bowie much love forever
Interesting, I'm currently listening to this while I'm "comfortably depressed" as I like to call it. I'm depressed, but I'm oddly ok with that. There's a beauty in depression that I'm ok with
@@mikegopperth5446almost 100% accurate … but more correctly, as he sang louder, the nearest microphone shut off and the next one further activated. So the point of this is that Bowie controlled microphones, not microphones - Bowie. A modified version of a noise gate.

How lucky were we to have lived on the same planet at the same time as David Bowie? Doesn't matter how young or old we are, to have missed out on his music would have been gut wrenching...
What's even more gut wrenching is the lies he and Mick Jagger perpetuated on all of you in the name of art. David Bowie and Mick Jaggers friends were ruthless junkies, underage prostitute slamming speed bangers. They scraped up lyrics from every starving artist they could get their filthy hands on... And then discredited anyone who confronted them with the consequences of their actions.. While their supermodels and friends wined and dined in luxury apartments and limousines.
I mean no, it wouldn't be gut wrenching. Only way to miss his music is to live and die before him. If that happened, you would have no idea what you're missing. It's the same as idk what artist I'll be missing when 2177 hits because I can't even fathom what music will be like then.
@@DrownInLysergic I guess if your the type of person that doesn't care what you fking getting into then maybe a junkies lying plagiarized LSD hooker marked up look is what suits you best... The rest of us are really happy he is dead....

And the best part: The line "And the shame, was on the other side" what a great bridge between the hype of "standing by the wall and guns" and decline & doubt about "you better not stay" And also at the end: "Or maybe we're lying, then you better not stay" this line is that shame he was talking about. Such a great lyrics.
In my youth I watched the Live Aid performance with Thomas Dolby playing the opening on synth, and thought "OK sure, that makes sense". Then watching the Freddie Mercury concert with Mick Ronson gave me a whole different perspective on it. Both were great in their own unique ways.
This song, Regular Show taught me a lot. I was a troubled teen and my grandma saw the good in me and gave me chance. Her not giving up on me made me want to change my life. She passed away a month before the last episode of the Regular Show aired, so when I saw it and heard this song, all the emotions I held in came flowing out. She will forever be my hero. Thank you for not giving up on me. 😢❤
My grandfather passed away March 17th 2021. I never truly grieved over his passing despite us being extremely close until his memorial service in July because life just keeps moving. This was the first song played and in that moment I felt such a release of emotion. Everything I’d been holding back for months. And to you whoever’s reading this. I’m here for you.
Do not give up my friend, remember that even if your grandfather is in heaven, he will be resting in peace without pain and will always protect you from any evil.
Lost my mother last April and I have held my grief inside for over a year. Waiting for that pivotal moment of release.....Maybe this will become that moment. She was my hero.

You and I...together...we can be heroes. So...stay with me. Stay by my side, my beloved beautiful one...for I shall never leave thee. I will remain by thy side, my beloved beautiful one, and we can be heroes...yes, we can be heroes, my darling. Thou are the joy of my heart, and I shall love thee forever, my beloved, beautiful one...for all eternity. Yes, my beloved, I shall love thee forever, and my love for thee shall never cease. I shall love thee you forever, and ever...and long after the stars burn out, my love for thee shall never cease, and it shall keep burning brightly, long after the fabric of time becomes weary and worn and wasted in the dark eternal night.
Had my first mushroom trip with my girlfriend. We got hungry, and went to the kitchen to make some sandwiches, and I put this song on. We danced, and cried, and it was such a beautiful moment. The German version of this song, also sung by Bowie, is even more emotional if you can believe it. I don’t even speak German but that version is something else. Supposedly he recorded this song with himself and the mic on opposite ends of the studio, so he sort of had to “scream” the song a bit to reach the mic. However he did it, the result can’t be argued with.
I wanna do this so bad in a convertible from 1979 wearing 70s clothes and a fashionable mullet with my friends. We're in cali and are going back to our hotel room from the beach at Malibu while the sun is setting

At the end of Regular Show, it’s revealed that Pops was reliving his memories in heaven - meaning every episode we watched, we were watching them with him. David Bowie is probably doing the same thing right now and we’re watching/listening his music alongside him. 🙏
It’s been 8 years and I cannot express what this song means to me. I guess the best way I can describe it is it makes me feel melancholic, eternal… and infinite. And nor can I express how much I miss David Bowie. It feels unreal that he's no longer here.
I miss David's presence in this world, and I ache in knowing there will be no new music from him , ever. But, dear G-d, what a legacy he has left us with!!
I’ve been struggling, have been for awhile. Feel like I will never make a difference, will never be good enough. This popped up in my mix and has helped lift the cloud. Maybe it’s time for therapy again. I hope you guys remember to be heroes today and everyday.
Nicole, you do make a difference and you are already good enough. You have great taste in music. Hope you are feeling better since you posted this. It gets better.
You make the world a better place and don’t ever forget it. One day you will look back on these days to this song and it will be nothing but a melancholy flashback to harder times, and you will remember how strong you were to make it out. Never forget you’re a hero too.

I cannot explain just how much this song means to me. From the first time I heard it as a kid at the ending of Regular Show, till today where I've heard it countless times life has changed so much. Yet whenever I hear it I always feel the same emotions. I feel accepted and as if I were in a bitter-sweet movie ending. Whenever I'm sad I listen to this song and it always brings me to tears but eventually calms me down. This is a great song and I will never stop listening to it. It almost feels as though I can't even listen to it regularly since it's special and I'll probably listen to it too much.

Well said 😃👍
I was nine when he died, but his mauic was fantastic and i‘m proud that i lived at the same time
What's even more gut wrenching is the lies he and Mick Jagger perpetuated on all of you in the name of art.

The line "And the shame, was on the other side"
what a great bridge between the hype of "standing by the wall and guns" and decline & doubt about "you better not stay"
And also at the end:
"Or maybe we're lying, then you better not stay" this line is that shame he was talking about. Such a great lyrics.

This is one of those songs that you instantly recognise just from the opening riffs. Such a timeless masterpiece, definitely one of Bowie's best work.
In my youth I watched the Live Aid performance with Thomas Dolby playing the opening on synth, and thought "OK sure, that makes sense". Then watching the Freddie Mercury concert with Mick Ronson gave me a whole different perspective on it. Both were great in their own unique ways.
The live version on “Stage” is also classic. Bowie sings it in a much smoother voice, like he knows how much of a classic it will be
The incredible guitar riff is of course to be attributed to the genius of Mr Robert Fripp!

The guitar solo by Robert Fripp is just fantastic, two geniuses together. The emotion in the singing is amazing, not usual for a studio recording.
The German version of this song, also sung by Bowie, is even more emotional if you can believe it. I don’t even speak German but that version is something else.

@@yestfmfwow. That is so weird that I just read this comment. I just saw Brit Floyd (Pink Floyd cover band) in Philly and I was blown away when they performed that song. Dark side of the moon is my favorite album ever made. My dad is in a Beatles cover band so yes I was raised well lol.

NOOO DONT MAKE ME. THE EYES... NOO
I beat em. no more tears! ive done this far too many times
bro.... that was epic
Make me cry 😢
I cannot explain just how much this song means to me. From the first time I heard it as a kid at the ending of Regular Show, till today where I've heard it countless times life has changed so much. Yet whenever I hear it I always feel the same emotions. I feel accepted and as if I were in a bitter-sweet movie ending. Whenever I'm sad I listen to this song and it always brings me to tears but eventually calms me down. This is a great song and I will never stop listening to it. It almost feels as though I can't even listen to it regularly since it's special and I'll probably listen to it too much.
“Keep on growing up, kid. Don’t let me stop you. Make mistakes, learn from ‘em, and when life hurts you, because it will, remember the hurt. The hurt is good. It means you’re out of that cave. But, please, if you don’t mind, for the sake of your poor old dad, keep the door open three inches.”
