As a guy that is currently playing Super Metroid for the first time, I don't think it's just about the nostalgia. It's one of the best games ever made!

@iMAg!N8R Maridia is beautiful. I also love the epicness of Norfair, then finding an exit at the corner right of the map ending up on Crateria. From hell to heavens
This was my favorite Metroid game and one of my favorite SNES games of all time. It had platforming like a Mario game. It had dungeon/equipment/ability unlocks like a Zelda game. It had battle mechanics like a Mega Man game. It had a dark and ominous vibe like a Castlevania game. It had badass music/sound like a Final Fantasy game. And it had the nostalgia of the original Metroid. It was like all of my favorite games combined into one. What more could a 9 year old ask for?
oh, my goodness. My 5 year old nephew watched his dad play one of the metroid games and developed this absolute fascination with Samus. We found this video searching for walkthroughs, which he loves watching and reenacting or drawing scenes from.. such a random, yet cool thing for a 5 year old to be obsessed with
I remember when I was little and for the longest time I didn’t know how to get space jump then when I finally did and went to lower norfair the music played and I was like oh shit it’s serious down here lol
This game is so bittersweet for me because I know in my heart that it will never be surpassed; this is the pinnacle of the Metroid series and my personal all time favorite game.
I have to agree with you, J W, because this game at it's time really was Metroid in it's prime and in many ways, still is. I say the same thing about Link to the Past, Super Contra, even Super Mario World and many more games where the Super Nintendo and it's time are concerned. It really was a unique time to be alive in and sadly, I don't think we'll ever have that experience again. In my opinion, Super Metroid completely perfected the isolation and "the unexplained" or "mysteriousness feeling" you're supposed to experience with the Metroid games.
It doesn't surpass it necessarily, but check out Hyper Metroid if you've never played it, it's a fantastic Super ROM hack that is a completely different game. Some of the best pure exploration in any Metroid imo
Hard to believe it was almost 30 years ago I first played this game & beat it. Harder still to believe that I still fire up an emulator & do it all over again every couple of years because the game is _still_ that good, but the soundtrack is a part of that. It's a rare, perfect creation where game objective, imagery, art style, music, & gameplay conspire to create an experience that will literally last a lifetime.
Same. I first played it at age 10 and return to it from time to time as it’s just one of the best games ever made. The soundtrack, the gameplay, the atmosphere. All the nostalgia.
Greatest Nintendo master piece, i carry many memories of this, when i was a kid, back then in the 90s, the music, the effects, enemies, makes me fell in love, i was obsessed, i used to read the manual which has pictures of everything in the game and remeber looking at the power ups "i want that!" haha and the very first time i faced a real dangerous boss (Kraid) damn, i was so scared, my heart pumping like crazy, i still playing this and i will always do.
fun fact: my dad challenged my mom to beat Super Metroid... An she did. It's funny because she isn't that much into "hardcore" gaming as she prefers more strategy games
In my eyes, Super Metroid, Metroid Prime and Metroid Prime 2 are the holy trinity of the best music in the franchise, and perhaps one of the most atmospheric music in video games.
Super Metroid is one of the greatest games of all time in a series that has not been treated very kindly by it's own creators. Many series have gone through the same. Super Metroid is one of the few 2D games that really makes you feel emotion. From just the title screen, you already feel the tone of this game. This is not your run of the mill SNES game, no. This is not your average Super Mario game, or your Zelda. This is Metroid! Back then, very few would go to the lengths that Nintendo went through to make this masterpiece of game design, sound, and gameplay all combined. The game is very alien (pun entirely intended) to the norm of the 1990's SNES games, and I think it stands out much more than other games of the era. The title screen starts with ominous music, over text appearing as if it were typed in a computer. The screen moves about on the unit containing the last Metroid. There seem to be (presumably unconscious) bodies on the ground, and the screen then shows the Super Metroid logo. I saw this a long time ago, and I was hooked. Play this game more people, and maybe the series can get more love from the creators.
Super Metroid is considered to be one of the top snes games of all time. Thats like saying A Link to the Past...or Chrono Trigger is underrated. Not even close bro.
If I recalled correctly from a handful of videos I've watched...the presumed unconscious bodies were actually dead. Please correct me if I am wrong of this fact.
I know pretty much everyone won’t read this comment (because it’s new & not popular), but despite all the turmoil that’s been in my life & the incessant change, super Metroid is the exact same masterpiece it was 20+ years ago. Everyone here on this video is a real OG for recognizing a masterpiece like this, and I hope y’all have the same affection and nostalgia for these tracks that I do. Peace and love, -Ryan
I love this game's OST. It sounds dark, creepy, mysterious, atmospheric, and supernatural. This is the kind of music that feels ideal for a horror setting.
That’s my 5th favorite, lower norfair is my favorite, green brinstar is my 2nd favorite, crateria main theme is my third favorite Ridley’s theme is my fourth favorite and that one is number 5
I love Hostile Incoming, Brinstar (Jungle) and Maridia was definitely the most difficult and mysterious area for me first play through, love the song for it. 💙
Love this game!!! Came out when I was 15, would spend hours playing it. When I finally got to tourian the music creeped me the fuck out lmfao 🤣. I to this day still play this master piece. Great game and hell a bad ass soundtrack 👍👍
For my 7th birthday I got this game shortly after release. core memory: The late nights with the lights off playing.. Nothing will ever compare to the anxiety this game's music could give me. I still play it now and again with such nostalgia.
This game/franchise/music aged well, a videogame icon so big that inspired tons of creators to make their own games when big companies (Aside from Nintendo) decided that making these type of games wasn't profitable and risky.
The greatest soundtrack for a video game ever. EPIC I listen to this day. I dunno which track is my fav.. I love them all but crateria theme & the haunting maridia melody stand out along with Lower Norfair is awesome!!! I wish we could get another metroid of this caliber....But to this day nothing comes close to that game from 94, 23 years ago....
@@francisthompson3772 what did you think about Metroid Dread? I thought that the game had ok music, ok environmental worldbuilding, but amazing combat and monster designs
@@waaagh3203 Yeah, it's still extremely good. A lot of old games I go back to and they have weak aspects, like they're too simplistic, the controls are clunky, weird bugs, whatever. This game was flawless. It could be made today as a "retro" game and it would be number one on Steam.
@@waaagh3203 I agree. If anyone ever asks me what I think is the best game of all time, I'm gonna say this. Remember this was made in 1994! That's just mind-blowing and the fact that it's completely playable almost 30 years later just goes to show how fantastic it is. The soundtrack is unbelievably good as well. To me this game is just perfect.
Fun fact: nobody at Nintendo wanted to touch the Metroid series after Super Metroid, because it was so pixel perfect that any sequel would have been viewed as a major let-down. It took another company to make Metroid Prime before another Metroid game was made.
I would like to point out both those replying to you and yourself are both partially correct. No game was released between Prime and Super Metroid, however, Fusion was released alongside Prime, and they had both been in development simultaneously. Additionally, Metroid Zero Mission had started development I believe before the release of either game, however it wasn't so much code as it was figuring out how to do the remake. However what's most important is that Nintendo tried to make Metroid Prime and was looking around for studios to take a shot at it, both internally and externally, and it was at this point that a large amount interest from our hometown heroes in Austin, Texas: Retro Studios, came out of the woodworks with a large portion of their developers being major Metroid Fans, who created a demo and showed it off to Nintendo. They were so impressed, they moved the (barely started) development that had occurred internally, and given it to Retro. So, Nintendo was not afraid of making a sequel, they had their internal developers working on it, both for Prime as well as Fusion. However, Retro won the bid. I'm sure they were hesitant at first, but after 5 years they basically went forth and tried their best, and it went well in hindsight. For the longest time, Prime was considered the 3rd best video game of all time on Meta Critic and many other sites, and Fusion was no pushover. ;)
@@brainypepper1621well Zero Mission hit in 2004 and Fusion hit the same day as Prime(in the US at least) in November 2002 so technically what he said was right and it's most definitely a plausible explanation for why it took 8 years to get another Metroid game and damn was Fusion and Prime worth the wait making 2002 probably still Metroid's strongest year so far(and I'm writing this in mid October 2024) damn now I'm back to obsessing over getting another 2D Metroid...if we ever do I hope it's long cuz pretty much my only real issue with Fusion is the length
Tourian is the freakiest song in the game. The lack of music and just pure horrifying ambience. Even when the musical notes start, it sounds otherworldly and just gives me the creeps. I love it!
I'd have to agree. It's so different than all the others and, it leaves a brooding feeling as your playing. Because up next, is the Mother Brain battle
30 years ago wow how time flies man this is one of my top 10 games of all time i am so lucky to have played this back when it first came out , one of my most memorable gaming experiences of my life
The baby Metroid rescue at the end of this game remains the only visceral classic game moment I can still feel to this day. Super Metroid was and always will be a masterpiece of the industry, and the standard all Metroid games should be held to.
Was always a fan of metroid but never played. Im pleased to inform all of you that I beat Super Metroid yesterday for the first time. Time to play Fusion, Zero mission, Samus returns! Haven't had a gaming bug like this in a LONG TIME
Super Metroid hands down has the best soundtrack over any game for the Super Nintendo console. I would even say, it's the best game I've played on Super Nintendo. No game out there takes me to my childhood like Super Metroid. Summer 1994, golden memories.
This level of storytelling with very very minimal words was unheard of for video games in 1994. I remember being blown away at the entire game, with the climax being the Mother Brain fight and escape. Nowadays, it seems like an awesome 2D video game, but don’t get it twisted: it made a massive impact. This is and remains one of the greatest games of all time.
I first heard about Super Metroid after watching a fan made video of an anti piracy screen. They used "Wrecked Ship" as the theme in the background and once I heard it, it was instantly creepy and I wanted to know what it was from. I searched up the game. I learned it was one if the greatest games of all time, so I bought a cartridge of it. As soon as the theme of Samus Aran came on, I knew I was about to embrace on an epic journey... Fast forward to a few years later, I'm 19 years old and this is my favorite soundtrack and game of all time. Its insane how a game of this era is so breathtaking, jaw dropping and chilling all at the same time. I listen to the soundtrack at work almost every day. I remember the battle against Mother Brain, the way I was shocked when the Metroid restored Samus' health. That was incredible. At the end of the game, the end credits, I teared up a bit listening to the music. What a fucking incredible game. Thank you Nintendo
I love Hostile Incoming, Brinstar (Jungle) and Maridia was definitely the most difficult and mysterious area for me first play through, love the song for it. 💙
How to know you're playing a horror game without knowing you're playing a horror game. "Why does this SNES game have a hard rading, why is this statue made of creepy monsters ... why are friendly aliens collapsing into dust-- oh, Ohh nooo."
I don't have a name yet. It's mostly fantasy but I just love listening to soundtracks from fantasy movies and also video games, mostly this one, when I write. It helps. If any writers are out there and don't listen to music while writing, try it. Symphonic/orchestral soundtracks are the best.
Super metroid have some of the sweetest soundtracks of all time in video games history ...the soundtracks fit every stages in the game...Brinstar underground depths is my favorite in the game...I wrote a song for Samus because of it.... it's so sweet that i used to spent lots of time in that area listen to it.... this is something that even Michael Jackson himself would've sing to...or wrote a song off it.... like i did. I wander if he ever heard when he was alive?....I love super metroid....can you believe that i have beaten this game over 100 times.
Can anyone believe that this was meant to be the last Metroid game? It set the standard for not only the series, but arguably the genre. I almost think Nintendo hasn't remade or remastered this game because they don't think they need to. I would like to see a remake on Dread's engine though. I'd call it Metroid: Return to Zebes.
Super Metroid is still one of the most immersive and atmospheric games and game soundtracks to have ever been crafted. Even the Silent Hill games aren't quite on the same level because you're spending so much time in those games of that series perpetually terrified and thus in an instinctive fight-or-flight mode that prevents you from really soaking in the full sense of being alone on an isolated alien world.
I'm so glad that this version of metroid was created back on the SNES.... and i got to play it ...if it didn't, just look at all the sweet gameplay and sweet soundtracks the world would've missed out on..... thanks creators....you all did a wonderful, great and magnificent job here....I looking forward to playing all the Metroid games that i didn't got to play.... and now the up and coming metroid dread.
Imagine being a brain in a jar with one eye, and just having someone smash it open and start shooting missiles into your eye. I'd wake up drooling acid too.
I love Hostile Incoming, Brinstar (Jungle) and Maridia was definitely the most difficult and mysterious area for me first play through, love the song for it. 💙
When I was young, I didn't care for all the ambient/atmospheric music and only really liked Brinstar (Jungle), but now I have more sophisticated tastes and love the whole score!
Been playing and replaying this masterpiece since its release…all these years later, it remains my favorite game. Thanks for uploading the soundtrack!!
Such great memories. This game helped me get through some hard times as a young teen going through depression. I always looked forward to playing it after school. Maridia (the caverns) and both Norfair tracks are my favorites.
this is one of the best games of all time IMO. def a classic and a true favorite of mne. i cherish the days i first played this game way back when i was about 7. now im 33, wow.... how the time flies!!!!!!!
I know I'm far from the only one that literally gets chills listening to this masterpiece of a soundtrack, this shit would give me chills in a volcano ...and u can't take the smile off my face with a sandblaster..even back when i first played this game in 95 when i was just 9 i was able to grasp just how amazing this soundtrack was and still is... without a doubt it's in my top 5 videogame soundtracks ever and it's probably number 1 ..its also in my top 10 or 20 soundtracks in any genre ever and the game itself is without a doubt in my all time top 20 games of all time...damn i miss the days when the Japanese ruled video games, now the Japanese don't even make their own consoles anymore or at least most of the time with them commissioning China to do it and I got absolutely nothing against the Chinese but when even Japan isn't making their own electronics anymore, something is amiss..but in the 80s and 90s especially Japan wasn't even a rank they were just the Best..don't get me wrong i love that since the turn of the millennium amazing videogames have been produced by countries on pretty much every continent but there's just something about Japan that always exudes quality..no bs when i was just 7 i use to look at my new,SNES and Genesis cartridges and if it said made in any country other than Japan I use to sigh and think that I got a second rate game(funny thinking about that line from Doc in Back to the future 3 when he says "No wonder this part failed it says made in Japan" that's how Americans viewed Japan in 1955(somewhat understandable after Pearl Harbor and World War II)then fast forward to 85 and they were probably the most advanced country on the planet..Japanese people and their culture is so damn cool i hope i get to visit one day before i die..my younger brother(a big anime fan who loves Japanese culture and skill as much as me probably more) did and he said it didn't disappoint so it's most definitely on my bucket list now...and as amazing as this game will always be, if I had to pick my favorite aspect of it The Soundtrack would win on most days, it's so amazing I still turn it off when playing it sometimes cuz I cant focus on anything else while its on
This game is an absolute masterpiece in every category. My love for Metroid came from this game and the series continues to be in my top 3 of all time. Love the Soundtrack too, beautiful!

Ahah ye me too :D
Same here. Amazing game
A game that every hardcore gamer should beat at least once. One of the greatest works of art ever created.
fun fact: my dad challenged my mom to beat Super Metroid... An she did.
It's funny because she isn't that much into "hardcore" gaming as she prefers more strategy games

can't even describe it in words. since 94 when i was a kid this track is stuck in my head and will never leave
Salute to you
In my eyes, Super Metroid, Metroid Prime and Metroid Prime 2 are the holy trinity of the best music in the franchise, and perhaps one of the most atmospheric music in video games.
18:43 Green Brinstar - may this go down in history as one of the best and most memorable tracks in gaming history!
Super Metroid is considered by many to be the greatest video game of all time
Ok I changed it
If I recalled correctly from a handful of videos I've watched...the presumed unconscious bodies were actually dead. Please correct me if I am wrong of this fact.
I'm so impressed by how they made the thunder sound in the crateria theme.
Peace and love,
-Ryan
I read it and I agree this is something else
Same here bro. Take care
No matter how deep I slip into depression and alcoholism this game makes me so happy and hopeful for the future. We are all gonna make it.
As a super Metroid loving brother, I stand by you man
I know this video is 6 years old, but I'm surprised that the item acquisition fanfare was not included, because it is part of the soundtrack
I have five top all-time video games that are all tied and this is one of em.
What are the rest
@@MARCULATION We will never know lol
@@backroomgentleman indeed
what are the rest
The title music alone already gave me goosebumps. The memories....
Just realized in the title screen there are bloody corpses on the floor :|
Soundtrack is pure excellence. This game is a diamond
I love this game's OST. It sounds dark, creepy, mysterious, atmospheric, and supernatural. This is the kind of music that feels ideal for a horror setting.
Best song: #15, brinstar underground depths
I still play it now and again with such nostalgia.
love this comment.
Super Metroid's soundtrack is a gigantic gold nugget
It's frankly amazing how much atmosphere they were able to squeeze out of this sound hardware.
Sony PCM
Um dos melhores jogos que pude desfrutar, Super Metroid, voltei no tempo ao ouvir esses temas
One of the best game soundtrack of all time. So mysterious.
This game/franchise/music aged well, a videogame icon so big that inspired tons of creators to make their own games when big companies (Aside from Nintendo) decided that making these type of games wasn't profitable and risky.
18:50 Good gravy samus is getting funky in the jungle
The greatest soundtrack for a video game ever. EPIC I listen to this day. I dunno which track is my fav.. I love them all but crateria theme & the haunting maridia melody stand out along with Lower Norfair is awesome!!! I wish we could get another metroid of this caliber....But to this day nothing comes close to that game from 94, 23 years ago....
peter c Not even Zero mission or fusion? Or the prime games?
@@francisthompson3772 what did you think about Metroid Dread? I thought that the game had ok music, ok environmental worldbuilding, but amazing combat and monster designs
Item Room Ambiance 17:43 : Best. Ringtone. Ever.
Best game ever
By far, this game way way ahead of its time.Music is spot on !!
My personal opinion is that it is INDEED the best game ever. Only game I've ever been able to play over and over and over.
@@waaagh3203 Same. Only game I was able to replay without getting bored.
Fun fact: nobody at Nintendo wanted to touch the Metroid series after Super Metroid, because it was so pixel perfect that any sequel would have been viewed as a major let-down. It took another company to make Metroid Prime before another Metroid game was made.
I read it didn't sell that well was being the reason
Are you forgetting about Metroid zero mission and Metroid Fusion or am I missing something?
What about Zero Mission and the literal Metroid 4 AKA Metroid Fusion?
Because up next, is the Mother Brain battle

wow
how time flies man
this is one of my top 10 games of all time
i am so lucky to have played this back when it first came out , one of my most memorable gaming experiences of my life
The baby Metroid rescue at the end of this game remains the only visceral classic game moment I can still feel to this day. Super Metroid was and always will be a masterpiece of the industry, and the standard all Metroid games should be held to.
That Brinstar theme I still can hear in my head. I played this when it first came out.
Brinstar Jungle and Underground are the best themes of this game for me.
Was always a fan of metroid but never played. Im pleased to inform all of you that I beat Super Metroid yesterday for the first time. Time to play Fusion, Zero mission, Samus returns! Haven't had a gaming bug like this in a LONG TIME
The Soundtrack of Lower Norfair - going down the Evelator in to the Heat while The Soundtrack is coming up, goosebumps.
Super Metroid hands down has the best soundtrack over any game for the Super Nintendo console. I would even say, it's the best game I've played on Super Nintendo. No game out there takes me to my childhood like Super Metroid. Summer 1994, golden memories.
Man I appreciate upper norfair more and more. Certainly an ambient piece but really sets the tension.
Best music in a video game, ever.
caralho, sensacional o que os músicos faziam com um chip de 64kb .... sons que marcaram minha vida e de muita gente...
Thank you Nintendo
this is some of the best music i have listened!!! Super Metroid is beyond the boundaries of awesome!!!! Greetings from 2021!!!!!
This is my #1 background working soundtrack. I can't tell you how many times I've listened to it and it never fails to get me hyped and on task.
12:56 was my favorite. So mysterious and chilling.... The whole soundtrack was really good.
I love Hostile Incoming, Brinstar (Jungle) and Maridia was definitely the most difficult and mysterious area for me first play through, love the song for it. 💙
I dunno why, all I kept saying was "oh shit, oh shit" under my breathe when that comes on as a kid playing this addictive freakin game lol
How to know you're playing a horror game without knowing you're playing a horror game.
"Why does this SNES game have a hard rading, why is this statue made of creepy monsters ... why are friendly aliens collapsing into dust-- oh, Ohh nooo."
I like to listen to this soundtrack while I write my sci-fi/fantasy story.
What's it called ?
I don't have a name yet. It's mostly fantasy but I just love listening to soundtracks from fantasy movies and also video games, mostly this one, when I write. It helps. If any writers are out there and don't listen to music while writing, try it. Symphonic/orchestral soundtracks are the best.
+MeanMrMustard1 That's what I do
How's that book coming?
You should share that some day
Super metroid have some of the sweetest soundtracks of all time in video games history ...the soundtracks fit every stages in the game...Brinstar underground depths is my favorite in the game...I wrote a song for Samus because of it.... it's so sweet that i used to spent lots of time in that area listen to it.... this is something that even Michael Jackson himself would've sing to...or wrote a song off it.... like i did. I wander if he ever heard when he was alive?....I love super metroid....can you believe that i have beaten this game over 100 times.
Man, I love this soundtrack! I think this is the only reason I'll go back to this game after it deleted my saves!
I totally agree, this is the best game/soundtrack of all time !I'm 33 now amd still play
As a below poor kid, this was my first snes game I owned when I was in 9th in the late 1990's. Excellent game.
Just by listening to these soundtracks, Brinstar felt like a whole world in itself.
This level of maturity in sound and set design was never reached again in any Metroid title after.
I think Prime 1 has the best soundtrack in the series, personally.
I used to be completely immersed in this game and I remember to get headaches after 5 hours of game playing.
29. Tourian-Rebuilt Headquarters is the soundtrack to when you need to shit but you're in a place where you can't for some reason

This game a special place in my heart
This game is SO badass. I've only played it for the first time recently and damn. So good.
Imagine being a brain in a jar with one eye, and just having someone smash it open and start shooting missiles into your eye. I'd wake up drooling acid too.
Lower Norfair, the perfect metronome to perform a bomb jump
Damn that maridia theme is terrifying. It does its job too well.
Still come back to this to listen to while working. Absolute masterpiece of gaming soundtracks.
I LOVE THIS!!!!! I have played Metroid all my life, so I really enjoyed hearing the soundtrack
The best game along with Warcraft 3 for me
Childhood gaming memorial number one !
Sitting on the carpet as a kid in a dark room with loud stereo and playing this the first time… awesome
My favourite game
As I listen to this again, I realise that it is one of the greatest video game OSTs.
Man. This was a life time ago in a different world. Now that I'm 37 with kids of my own and listening to this.... It's insane. Sounds like all these tracks have Trent Reznor involved with all of them... Haha
You're confusing Quake 1 with the work of Kenji Yamamoto, Minako Hamano.
Came back here after beating dread, and damn this ost is way more iconic
Sometimes you need to sacrifice something to gain something else in return
