This is good advice, much more Biblical and measured than your last video about modesty. Especially the bit about beauty & charm being fleeting. I would have liked to hear more justification, however, for how the Bible teaches modesty - it's usually just assumed. The scriptures people trot out for it are more directly pointed at modesty in terms of wealth. That being said, I think it is wise for people to dress in the way that will communicate who they want others to see them as. For women who aren't looking for a quick hookup, this often means they should dress in a modest way (same goes for men). But I don't know if the Bible gives us very specific instructions on how we ought to dress, and when.

A glaring omission is Ruth. We are not told if Ruth was beautiful. The story of Ruth is an ethical lesson: how to marry in a selfless manner. However, the author does mention something of esthetics when Boaz thanks Ruth for considering him and not chasing after younger men. Another interesting observation is that Isaac would not have known for himself whether Rebekah was beautiful before he married her, for she veiled herself.

As a guy here I’d guess that at least part of that (even maybe a small part) is because God made men (and women) different even as individuals. There’s also different cultures. So what is physically attractive becomes an area of Christian liberty. In some societies plump and chubby women were seen as the standard of beauty. At other times small, slender and flat was. And everything in between. The same goes for the men and their physical appearance. And thats only body types, to say nothing of facial shapes, styles and features, or hair colors.

  • @josephbrandenburg4373
    @josephbrandenburg4373 2 года назад +2

This is my second comment, and I am writing it because this is a subject I think about often and I'd like feedback from other Christians. It's not really about the video but about the subject of modesty in general, from a male perspective. I want to know if I'm far off the mark in my thoughts, so that I can improve myself and guard my walk more closely.
Personally I am of the opinion that there's nothing inherently wrong with the body or the skin. The person who has the eyes is the one who must be responsible about lust. I wonder if we were to see each other's skin in more natural, healthy contexts, would we have healthier attitudes toward the body? I wonder if pornography would be so widely used if people didn't associate nudity and sex the way they do. I think "Christian modesty" in places like beaches is misguided-- making the girls wear one-piece suits reinforces to all the impressionable young minds that there is something inherently sexual about showing skin. I fear that this attitude is a tacit admission that men can't win the fight against lust, so women should be the ones to cover our failures. This is also one of the root causes of people's insecurity about their bodies. So it hurts men and women - because men are doing most of the lust (not all) and women are suffering most of the insecurity (not all). So in a sense, I think that kind of modesty may have some harmful effects, too.
And that's the craziest thing. I don't often feel tempted to lust when I'm with a woman that I know in person. It has nothing to do with what she is or isn't wearing - I have respect for her personhood and I am afraid of the social consequences of being caught staring. When I was in art school, it would never occur to me that the model in the middle of the room could be an object of lust; that would be unprofessional and crude. But take away the other person, turn her into a picture, and all that goes away. I don't have anything holding me back when there's no social consequence for my bad behavior. So it isn't an issue of modesty at all, at least in the way it's normally described. In fact, it was possible for me to look intently at the model in the drawing classroom without lust, but a mere glance at an "immodest" woman in a grocery store can be a sin, though she is wearing much more clothing. And it's my fault entirely. I should always require that level of self-control from myself. I should always respect the other person, even if she is a passing stranger.
And this is where it comes back to the idea of modesty. Why is it that I sometimes fall to the temptation to lust? It's because I tell myself that she is inviting it on herself by how she dresses. I associate her clothing with a lack of self-respect and then lose respect for her. When I don't respect her, I don't respect myself, I don't respect God. Why should that have anything to do with what she is wearing? If she doesn't respect herself, I should still respect her. If she wants the attention, there is a better way to give it to her. Ultimately, I am the one who is to blame for any sin that occurs, who am I to say that she led me into it? I was led away by own desire. She was only guilty of being desirable. What if, instead of making a woman responsible for controlling her desirability, what if we expected more from our men and built them up? If only, when I was a teenager, I had been given affirmation that I was normal to want to look, and then given leadership to teach me how to respect the girls in my life. But I was given a smattering of Matthew 5:28 and a misrepresentation of 1 Timothy 2:9. The body itself is off-limits, and my curiosity must have been a sin. That didn't teach me self-control. It taught me to be ashamed, which made everything worse! Maybe there's a middle way, one that encourages decency and propriety based on the context and setting. Maybe there's a way we can teach our young ones about the body at home, instead of letting them burn with curiosity and discover the horrors of unrestricted pornography? They're finding it at 11 these days.. I was 14 or so. Had there been a healthier way to learn, would I have been drawn into the vacuum of sexual temptation and sin? I learned far, far more than my curiosity had longed to know. I wish I never had. I think I was more lonely in those days than I have ever been in my life.
Someone, I think it was actually Doug Wilson in another video, said: "The problem with pornography isn't that it shows too much; in fact, it shows too little" -- meaning that the subject of the films is deceitful because it strips out the personhood of the performers. It removes the cost of their misbehavior. It covers over the fact that they are not nearly as happy as they make themselves appear to be. And more than anything, it eliminates relationship from the equation. Would I look if it were a woman I know, even if it were a beautiful woman I would love to be with? No, I would be ashamed to treat her that way and I would feel ashamed on her behalf to see her in such a state. If I were in the same room, would I stay? Or would I cover my face and vacate the premises?
How can we protect people from this? Is it possible to create something that shows the whole picture, instead of the deceitful, edited lie? Maybe then we would be able to have holiness in the way we look at each other, and modesty wouldn't be such an important issue. I don't want to be so enslaved to my sin that I am only a free man when the women around me are forced to enshroud themselves in burqa. Surely that is the most hellish state for either sex.

    • @TheRevolutionaryMan4614
      @TheRevolutionaryMan4614 2 года назад +3

Good point. No, excellent point. Modesty is good, but women should be urged to embrace modesty not for the men's sake, but for Christ's sake.
Men should own up their faults, just as James describes that temptation is born when a man is "dragged away by his own evil desire and enticed", not because He looked at this woman or that woman who supposedly was immodest, and so making the woman the source of his temptation when the source is his very own heart.
Rather men should spend more time crying out to God as the psalmist did in chapter 19 "How can I know the sins lurking in my heart? Cleanse me oh Lord from all my hidden faults, and keep from willful sins" and the Lord will have mercy and grant the freedom and the blessing of a pure heart.

Christian women have a responsibility to dress appropriately not because they are responsible for keeping Christian men from lusting after them (an impossible task at any rate), but because they are responsible (just as men are) for honoring God with their body. 1 Thess. 4:4 speaks of each of us using our body (or "possessing our vessel") in holiness and honor. Due to asymmetrical expressions of human sexuality, looks and dress carry much more weight for women than they do for men, and words and behavior carry more weight for men than they do for women. That is to say that we each have greater responsibility in certain areas when it comes to Christlike virtue and honoring God with our bodies-women in how they present themselves in appearance/demeanor (primarily) and men in how they talk and act (primarily).
Of course a big part of men's responsibility in this is properly loving and respecting our sisters in Christ like you mentioned, and I 100% agree that it's better to teach a holistic view of the body and of human sexuality with an emphasis on properly ordered desire than to tell young men simply "body = sinful."

26 Likewise the Spirit also helps in our weaknesses. For we do not know what we should pray for as we ought, but the Spirit Himself makes intercession [a]for us with groanings which cannot be uttered.
    And CHRIST as well=Romans 8:34
34 Who is he who condemns? It is Christ who died, and furthermore is also risen, who is even at the right hand of God, who also makes intercession for us.
    Hebrews 7:25
25 Therefore He is also able to save [a]to the uttermost those who come to God through Him, since He always lives to make intercession for them.
It's Christ and Holy Spirit who intercedes for us not apostles
There is only one Mediator between God and men LORD Jesus Christ= 1 Timothy 2:5
For there is one God and one Mediator between God and men, the Man Christ Jesus.

    Apostles are allowed to marry,
    1 Corinthians 9:1-5
1 Am I not an apostle? Am I not free? Have I not seen Jesus Christ our Lord? Are you not my work in the Lord? 2 If I am not an apostle to others, yet doubtless I am to you. For you are the seal of my apostleship in the Lord.
3 My defense to those who examine me is this: 4 Do we have no right to eat and drink? 5 Do we have no right to take along a believing wife, as do also the other apostles, the brothers of the Lord, and Cephas?
If Peter (peter is cephas read John 1:42) the so called "first pope" was married, why does the catholic church doesn't allow "pope" to marry?
    _________________________
The so called vicar of christ/ pope/holy father Peter called himself a fellow elder in 1 Peter 5:1, and as per the qualifications of elder in Titus 1:5-9 the elder is allowed to get married; then why does the "pope" is required to be celibate and catholic? ( when Peter was neither celibate nor catholic).
1)Peter was not perfect human nor was he a perfect disciple
2)He sank down while walking on water
3)Our Lord said to peter get behind me satan
4)Peter reject our Lord 3 times
5)Our Lord rebuked Peter for calling fire from heaven
6)Our Lord rebuked Peter when he cut of the soilders ear
7)Paul rebuked Peter for being hypocrite because he was acting different in front of Jews and different in front of gentiles.
    8) Moses messed up, and he was a important part of Bible ( that's why he never entered the promised land),
9)David messed up ( and he has the Holy Spirit),
    10)King Soloman messed up,
    11) Saul messed up and God regretted the decision (1 Samuel 15:10-11).
Hatrick (Saul then David then Soloman back to back messed up)
12)The apostles run away a day before Lord Jesus got locked up.
13)The early church messed up Rev 2:18-20
If these great people could mess up, why do you think the catholic church wouldn't mess up.

    Galatians 4:21-26
21 Tell me, you who desire to be under the law, do you not hear the law? 22 For it is written that Abraham had two sons: the one by a bondwoman, the other by a freewoman. 23 But he who was of the bondwoman was born according to the flesh, and he of the freewoman through promise, 24 which things are symbolic. For these are the two covenants: the one from Mount Sinai which gives birth to bondage, which is Hagar- 25 for this Hagar is Mount Sinai in Arabia, and corresponds to Jerusalem which now is, and is in bondage with her children- 26 but the Jerusalem above is free, which is the mother of us all.

Notice he also said, don't be afraid to say no to a person. This tells us that the person looking for a spouse should have standards that are to be met first. These standards are best based upon the biblical, God fearing/following standards as God is the one who made humans, male and female, to begin with.

Make up is not for a godly woman as much as yoga clothes and short and tight clothing. There is a reason God made tunics, not short or tight things for Adam and Eve in Genesis chapter 3.

I have a different interpretation of God making clothing for them, if you're interested.
God made them, and they were nude when they were created. When they sinned, their eyes were opened, and they realized they were naked. God had told them "The day you eat of it, you will surely die". They were ashamed of themselves, and afraid, so they hid. Then when God found them, he didn't take their lives, as he had said. (Some interpret it as a spiritual death, which may be true, but IMO that's a secondary interpretation if not a bit forced) Instead, God gave them skin made from an animal. He took an animal's life and used it to cover their nakedness.
Thus, I think that Adam and Eve's nakedness is a symbol of their guilt and shame. It represents the state of vulnerability they have when they stand before God. God's gift of animal-skin clothing is a prefiguration of Christ's substitutionary death, and the clothing itself represents his righteousness, which covers our sin.
So I have also come to the opinion that the Adam and Eve story is not useful for discussions of modesty, one way or the other. It isn't talking about clothing at all, rather, clothing is a symbol for the real meaning- God's love, substitutionary atonement, and covering of grace.

The reason we know God intended it that way is because he has revealed things about Himself in Scripture. The Bible tells both older men and older woman to teach young woman. Our authority isn't Doug Wilson, or any person for that matter. It's God's word. The Bible is the standard. Doug is just expounding on what the Bible teaches.
