Two masters of the art of comedy just having a natural conversation. I could listen to this type of exchange for hours. Notice how neither one get down in the gutter with sexual innuendo or foul language? They have true talent. Bob Newhart is one of the best comedians in history. His delivery is unparalleled. Truly the best of the best.
This was when comedy was classic -- no swearing and just pure intelligence. Mr. Newhart was an incredible gift to us as was Mr. Carson. I am grateful that we have RUclips so I can watch the old shows as Hollywood is not putting out much good anymore.
If you get Over The Air channels on your TV, they rerun Carson's shows every night, generally ones from the late 1970s to the end of his show in the early '90s. There's another channel that reruns the Dick Cavett show as well. But you can't beat Johnny, especially when he's got a rapport with the people he came up with, like Newhart or Rickles, Buddy Hackett, Joan Rivers. It's not just celebrities pushing their latest series, it's like watching two old friends goofing around with each other, like here.
guys are intelligent. doesnt mean you know stuff. regurgitating Tropical nonsense. but an educated person would know from listening to nonsense, his wife's sweet gabriel essence, Bob is fire, michael. but pointless to tell anyone. the whole world is uneducated.
I worked on the Newhart Show and he was wonderful to me even though I was only a voice. He invited me to sit at the table with the "big kids" and even gave me a dressing room. Apparently it was because he had enjoyed his days in radio.
Excellent examples as to how subtle intelligence and comradeship can be expressed affectionately, even when tearing the other apart. The result? Laughter, not disdain.
Watching great conversation, even from 37 years ago is "gold", I ponder why so many of us spend so much time here at you tube,,,,,,, is it because no one talks anymore, we just chat, and text on computers.
I loved Carson, and still see him as the king of talk shows. In large part, this is because it wasn't forced, and he seemed truly interested in people and not just buttering them up. It is unfortunate that this seems hard to do on TV today, where every guest is there to plug his/her book or movie or album, and the hosts are desperate to show how clever THEY are. I think most of them are very clever and talented, but they should leave that for the monologue and bits, and then be more natural when interviewing. Some do that better than others, and those are the only ones I can watch from time to time.
Excuse me, but on this very show in 1984, Carson plugs Freddie DeCordova's book with that diary routine. Then Bob Newhart comes out and plugs the season premier of his show, and his upcoming Seattle appearance. Yeah, right, people didn't plug their stuff on talks show back then! And, Yes Johnny Carson is gifted on the air; I give him full credit for that. But what makes you think he wasn't out to show how clever he was when he was doing interviews? Carson was egotistical, overbearing and so hard to work for, he often put chills down the spine of his staff. And as of this 1984 show, he had just gone through his THIRD divorce. Two of those wives said he beat them while drunk.
When Bob had his show, he and Dean Martin were doing a skit and they started throwing one-liners at each other ad lib. It cracked up the crew so bad they let it go for about 20 minutes and then the episode ended. It is now TV gold newhart, Martin, and Bob Hope were 3 actors that could do that they didnt follow the script. They played off of the other person in the scene
What he said about Astrology is so true I dont run my life by it I've just seen so many instances in which it works out that I cant help but pay attention to it
While it was pretty hilarious their conversation over Carson being a Scorpio and Scorpios being secretive, Carson was in fact a very private man off camera and when he retired he practically disappeared from public. I can only remember one appearance he made after retiring and he did not speak a single word - his appearance on The Letterman Show.
I would like to remind some of you who think that Johnny only had comedians on his show who were "clean" and wholesome, Johnny was the first to feature Richard Pryor, George Carlin, Eddie Murphy and Robin Williams on the Tonight Show. All four were known for using colorful language in their stage shows and recordings but were just as funny on the tonight show when the language was more suited for network television. Mr Newhart was also known for using some profanity on stage. You can't measure overall comedy over the decades by what you see on The Tonight Show.
Someone in the Tonight show fact-checking department was asleep at the wheel cause the show Bob was doing at that time was called "Newhart" and not "The Bob Newhart Show".
@@suefoss3396 So it was wrong. What about that don't you understand? Johnny was usually up on things like that. I didn't say it wasn't funny. Just like my facts, ok?
Of course he is. Bob had a number one comedy album before he was on stage. He had never done stand up he was the funniest guy in the accounting office.
There are plenty of good enough comedians now too, but the art of hosting a show like that, with the subtle finesse of playing up your guests, knowing when to edge them on and when to reel it back in, unfortunately died with Carson and its heirs got completely lost after Letterman.
Johnny was gracious. Each of his wives were fools to let the man go. Men with great responsibility women will never know the temptations and burdens they face. It's always the me-myself-and-I gospel.
Introduction: is Johnny drinking at bit? Just wondering. No condemnation or anything. I have the utmost respect for Johnny Carson. Always will. Thanks.
They are so funny. I never went to bed until after his show. Now, I'm reduced (or elevated) to watching old shows because everything on TV is filthy garbage.
It's so weird seeing them talk about the animation industry as kind of being a "nothing" medium. It was only a few years after this episode that Disney would surge back with "The Little Mermaid".

Bob Newhart can really hold his own. I love Johnny Carson’s quick wit and comedic timing, and I feel Bob Newhart is just as talented.
Two consummate professionals! Even when they're bad, they're great!
he's a total pro. dry, likable, and hilarious.
A great episode tonight in heaven with Carson, Rickles and Bob. rip.
They work so well together it's a very good blast from the past!

Two of those hands clapping in the audience belong to me. I was in the audience of this show. Row 6, right where Stump the Band is often done.
That’s cool! 👏🏼
I thought I recognized you
@@brucevonah511 Yep, I'm the one saying, "Ha, ha, ha!" after each joke.
I grew up with this. And even a little earlier. I will take this over any modern talk show or sitcom any day. Everything is all dumbed down now.
This is the America I grew up with.
Pure class , we will never see this time again .
That is absolutely true: you will never see dead people again because they are dead.
God bless the avatars of the golden age of television. Carson and Newhart = Giants of their Time
No political comment. Clean fun banter. This is why I loved watching Carson. Todays late show hosts should take some cues.
Both Johnny and Bob were at the top of their game. The nostalgia brings back good memories.
I was thinking the same thing. Bob you will be missed but you're with Ginny and so many friends. God speed.
Watching great conversation, even from 37 years ago is "gold", I ponder why so many of us spend so much time here at you tube,,,,,,, is it because no one talks anymore, we just chat, and text on computers.
Mr Newhart. Comedy genius.
Carson made banter into an art form. He was masculine but classy. Now we get giggly and prissy.
The Bob Newhart Show was so funny. And Susan Plushette is so beautiful and funny with him.
Years later and it’s still really funny
Newhart and Carson. What a wonderful team.
A time of great late night entertainment
Bob Newhart always killed it on The Tonight Show. Just as funny as Rickles.
The way Johnny sets everyone up just cracks me up! What a pro!

Bob is awesome.
What fun to see Newhart and Carson jibing one another...
In real life away from show biz they were best of friends and had been for years
This is classic comedy !!!
Back then you didn't have to look perfect, Bob probably tied his own tie.
I enjoyed hearing about Bob doing the voice on the Rescuers! I'd love to see that segment Johnny was talking about where they had June Foray on!
Great comedic timing
Would of been good if Carson had Newhart and Rickles together Daymm that would be a gem!
Unfortunately that only happened on Phil Donahue, the most boring man in the history of talk television.
But that is a great video...just watched it!!@@1AstralKing

This show is a classic.Always liked Bob Newhart. He is very knowledgeable in astrology. He is very funny, and his two main sitcoms are classics.
He actually is like the character he plays in the Bob newhart show.
As David Hyde Pierce so aptly put it, "the only difference between Bob on stage and Bob off stage is that there is no stage."

Carson had more class in the dirt under his fingernails than that sorry excuse for an entertainer who hosts The Tonight Show now.
No dirt under his nails!
