I notice in the comments there’s always someone who laments that we don’t have comedians like Carson and Newhart any more. It’s the time of that era. We had rules in television about the way you can talk and act. Once cable came along it didn’t have the same moral code that Hollywood enforced for television and making films. Cable developed channels that allowed rated R programming. Things progressed further with channels that showed rated X programming. In big cities late night programs on cable and later the internet encouraged people to put shock value into their shows. Your could catch this in night clubs across the country. Old Friar Club Roasts were funny or barely risqué. Today Friar Club Roasts are rated X all the way through. It’s discouraging that people think they have to be that offensive to be funny. I miss the comedians of the past. You could watch them over and over. Whether your the straight man like Andy Griffith or the funny one like Don Notts. Don Rickles could do his offensive humor with out swearing. He made fun of human weakness and obvious mistakes. Remember Larry, Darryl, and Darryl. They represented a rural segment of the population. Bob Newhart was a straight man to their dead pan humor. They took life literally. How can we restore the atmosphere of television. Remember Jeff Foxworthy. He made jokes about his family and country life. He made being a redneck famous. He wrote books about it. It was an attempt for the public to try to understand the rural hillbilly lifestyle. He was always calm and straight forward about how he suffered his relatives on his wife’s side after he became successful. He had a gift. It is possible to get great rated PG 13 comedians again. I’m sure they are out there. Comedy club owners need to encourage them. Rodney Dangerfield was another one. He complained about his personal life and how badly others like his wife, his doctor, and his bookie treated him. He couldn’t get respect. Tim Conway made his clumsiness very funny, Richard Pryor did use bad language but he stayed on the night club circuit. Joan rivers was another one who spoke badly of others. I felt she went beyond Don Rickles. She would say rude, belittling things about other famous people. Some wouldn’t speak to her any more. Can we talk about the bad way others treated her. She did enough night clubs that she kept her rough edges.a
