      And television, even though it was very expensive to broadcast over the air, it was free for us viewers to watch before cable came along, and perhaps one or two 15 second commercials to endure during a show, now during the news, we have more annoying commercials than news stories! Such a brilliant show. Michael Harris is a wonderful character. I meet many people like him (and like Stephanie). The existence of this show demonstrates I'm not alone in my viewpoints. the "Try Smiling" episode where the townsfolk swallow up Michael's simple-minded message (in which he totally believes for a while himself, not because it makes sense, but because it sells for a while), wonderfully demonstrates a Kool-aid swallowing tendency in much of the history of the US. And other countries too. And it is easy to identify with Bob's frustration at his inability to demonstrate the fatuousness of the whole phenomenon to the townsfolk. And then the entire town and Michael turn on a dime and don't believe it anymore and that's that! No reasoning, just another snap emotional reaction of a group.

      Bob Newhart basically repackaged 'Green Acres' in Vermont. It is a complete reversal of reality where the one sane, normal person lives amongst idiots but that one sane, normal person is in fact so out of touch with the community that the community seems likes idiots in the telling of stories from his point of view.
      Imagine if the stories were given to us from the community point of view; I'm sure Bob (and Mr. Douglas) would look like the fatuous kool aid swallowing, self absorbed person he really is... and the people who, outside the story, that can relate to Bob are too.
      Marshal McLuhan would be very proud to know that you missed the message of the medium. hubris at it's finest

      A fine actor. You have to know his gritty, New York upbringing, suffering from bipolar disorder with a rage-filled father and alcoholic mother ( they loved each other, but were totally mismatched) to see what a creation the Michael Harris character is - a surface-obsessed well-off wasp who seems never to have had a real problem in his life.
      But Peter knew life, knew his job, and was an ok guy. Newhart knew talent when he saw it.

    Michael's persona has much in common with the Alastair character in the Britcom "As Time Goes By" but Alastair is a much better and more moral and decent person. However, the shallowness and deft manipulativeness exist in both. Michael is hands down more shallow.

    Same thing as we can see on youtube to day when lecturers advertise their books and seriously talking about aliens, telepathic communication with spirits, conspiracy theories, russia, persecution (CIA wants to kill me)
    Only missing prehistoric dinosaurs.

    A classic show; real humour rarely changes! FYI, when you write ‘it's’, you are saying ‘it is‘, which I imagine was not your intention, Andrew…

      It certainly wasn't Dave thanks for pointing it out. You are the only person to have spotted this stupid mistake,
      well done! ( I don't know what got into me!) Now corrected I'm pleased that you did enjoy the clip.

      No, different actor. The guest star here is Guy Boyd. Gary Seven was played by Robert Lansing.

    Can anyone name the actor who played the 'director' in this, and what else he did? I'm guessing that the 'Michael Harris' (named in another comment ) played the writer. Both rising to Newhart's level here, and worth knowing, please..

    • @Sistergirl787
      @Sistergirl787 Год назад +2

      Peter Scolari. Before Newhart, he played on sitcom called Bossom Buddies, with Tom Hanks. He was a fantastic actor. He died of Colon cancer in 2021.

      @@Sistergirl787 Thanks for saying more on Scolari. The word 'star' is a fitting word for some actors, shining even after they pass. And I see that he married an actress, did some difficult acting jobs, and had children, so no surprise that he had good friends. Thanks for pushing me to look. John
