Quite honestly, I have more fun with the Redcat Danchee than I did with my Axial Bomber knowing that it's a 1/4 of the cost of my Axial Bomber.
Out the box with steering at full lock the tyres foul on the lower suspension arms, this is easily cured by adding 15mm extension wheel hexes (about £12) Moving the wiring from lower arms to the triangulated pivot bar tidies the wiring out the way so it does not snag. I made my own upgraded lower link arms using stainless steel drinking straws (£5) cut to length, flattened the ends in bench vice and drilled holes for fixing with the original screws. This gives it better clearance than the original straight arms. Changing the rear servo saver for the fixed servo horn provided in the box improves the rear steering performance and reduces the centering slop when straightening up after tight turns. I got the Ravine brand new for £95 so with my upgrades it is a very capable rig for £112 ! - This easily out performs rigs that are 4 or 5 times the cost. I will upgrade the servos and fit better tyres at some point to further improve performance but I am having great fun with it on very rough terrain in S.W.Scotland. With sensible driving and careful line choice it is quite amazing the obstacles the Ravine can crawl over with just a few very cheap upgrades and some simple adjustments. Worth every penny.

I've only just noticed that the Axial has wheel/axle weights. LoL! My Ravine does now. I took the tires off and wrapped 100g of plumber's solder around each wheel well, then wrapped that with electrical tape. And a few weeks later, I 3D printed some thin "sleeves" that were then glued to the back of the wheel centre and extend a little bit over the axle hub, then wrapped another 60g plumber's solder over that bit as well. Hehe, I realize that half of the weights are always above the axle centre, but what the heck! Hmm, I guess I'll have to upload some images of what I've mentioned onto the MSUK forum
Interesting test. I think that when comparing the two, you might only consider performance upgrades that you have made to the Capra, rather than including the appearance modifications when considering the price difference. Thanks for sharing!
Danchee makes them, they crawl NICE... a pain to work on if similar to Redcat/Danchee "Trail Hunter". gears and pins and ball sockets galore to try to keep in place as you close it back up!
hey Phil... way away from the RC thing, ya got blackberries there! pick about a 5 gallon bucket worth to juice them through woman's knee high stockings (picking happens fast if you tell some children you'll bake them a couple pies btw). put the juice in a 2 gallon jug with some yeast and a small pile of sugar on the floor of the jug, a cork with a hole to put a bubbler into or make yourself a bubbler with some aquarium tubing also works (a "crazy straw" is good too, just keep water in the lower halves of the loops). keep in a dark warm place, check if it needs water in the bubbler, or a little sugar added, about once a week. if you do it now you'll have some great blackberry "champagne" (it'll self carbonate) that'll be 10-12% alcohol for Christmas / New Years season. its really good special stuff! for the pies, use about 1/2 whole berries and 1/2 juiced berry meat, they're getting boiled with some sugar, corn starch or gelatin anyway, pie crust is easy to make costs about nothing too. they look great with a lattice on top is also an "easy nothing". the Ravine same as Redcat/Danchee RidgeRock, its lowlier little brother is the 40 dollar "Trail Hunter". with the Trail Hunter, peel the front tires there's just enough room between the tire beads for 4 turns of 2 mm solder (just did it). not bothering with the rears because a little up front is probably enough to help steering+traction climbing. I know too much weight will bog the little axle motors.. 4 turns is about 20" worth, times two is a substantial bit of weight added up front really. same act to the Ravine might help it a bunch, cheap+easy, easy to undo if it hurts more than helps. start with a spot of CA, last wrap press the steps tight with flat screwdriver, wrap electric tape stretched (cut 1/2 width) 2 layers, end with spot of CA to lock the tape keeping the solder compressed to the rim. put the tires back on.. easy 5 minute job.
I have the danchee which is the same moa I believe....I have changed the servos to full metal high torque and hyrax tires with 1.9 beadlocks and it's a monster.....it hasn't seen a line that it can't take that has been taken.
Tires are taller and the center ground clearance is higher which makes a tall vertical ledge easier to climb over. Bothe those cars are built with different crawling styles in mind In other words where one exceeds the other will struggle so on an so forth
I´m very interested in the FTX Ravine now. Very capable but the tires do not seem very soft though, I didn´t see them squeezed even once in the video. Perhaps it needs more weight in the wheels? Did amazingly as stock though. But yeah that Capra is a superb rock crawler for sure! Very interesting and fun video mate, cheers!
yes, few minutes ago added 4 turns 2 mm solder to the front rims of my Redcat/Danchee "Trail Hunter". Redcat sells this Ravine as the "RidgeRock", "Trail Hunter" is its lowlier front steering only (with motor braking tho) 40 dollar unit. its about same size, can lift any wheel 5" off the floor with other 3 still down is pretty impressive flex
Very late to this vid. While I would not pay $1200 for a crawler, I also would not buy that cheap one. It kinda sucks, 'cause it seems to struggle with slow, technical crawling. There are crawler kits for around $300-$380 USD that will perform very close to that Axial and that's the route I am going. Helpful to see none the less and I love direct comparisons. TY
the ravine which is called the pirate swinger in switzerland has one problem: its a bit too light and thus gets stuck on little trees or thorns. i wonder if its possible to upgrade to heavier rims and tyres, but that would probably kill the motors
EDIT: 300g per wheel is managable for the vehicle, no damage after quite a lot of use so far. after over half of a year owing 3 of them so far my favorite tyres are from ali express the Austar Hobby Bully Comp tyre 2.2, extremely skinny so the low weight of the vehicle presses a bit better on the tires, also very soft tires in general. combine with rim weights on the front only and its scary how far it can go and how much more expensive vehicles it leaves behind.
Interesting review, the ravine did well against the capra, but i think if we are honest the ravine may only last 12 months at least it would need a few new parts, i have the ECX Temper gen 2 as a second crawler and i do rather like it
Hello. I love the content. I would like to see a part 2. The content? Now modify the $120 one, compare the price point to the modifications and performance. At the end we can see which one has the bigger fun factor.
im surprised for the cost, i reckon makes some custom metal parts, try and find a way to give it a dig function and give it some high end tyres and it would competitive, i think beyond that, give it some heavier servos it would even be a winner, things like shocks and motors seem to be an after thought with improvements, though i would like the see some metal parts for it, tho thats just me
Not for nothing but the cheap crawler here in the states is called the Danchee Ridge Rock its from Redcat Racing and its unstoppable but its Achille's heel is its front suspension I wrecked two of em running on pillows for crying out loud and on one the ESC kept conking out so though it articulates like a Cobra and can climb like a monkey the front is as fragile as an egg. I ended up with Redcat's Everest 10 doesn't have rear articulation but its built like a tank and so far can do pretty much whatever the RR can do just not as pretty too watch. Over a thousand bux for an RC that, well not for nothing didn't seem like it was worth it to me but I'm a cheapskate so there it is, cheers Tomley.
The ravine is a great rig, some of these prices are starting to get out of hand , the whole world is still struggling yet people are paying these rediculous prices , the performance margins are not as big as people think so why skint yourself out and put your family at risk, plenty of mid range rigs can compete with the silly money rigs, a few well chosen upgrades and your in the mix for a fraction of the cost
Awsum vid bud. I have 2 ftx ravines for my boys. There unbeatable for the price. Did you know they also float? My son drove it In to a pond and it just motored over to the other side! Alot of people want to know what upgrade options there are. The majority of people who buy them imo want to know if it works befor shelling out. Could you let us know what good upgrade options there are. 👍 I also hear axe body's fit on it too. :-)
When you buy these expensive crawlers it’s because you know how to drive your rc and want more out like when he couldn’t get through sum of those difficult passes with the ravine and the Capra did. That’s what you’re paying a thousand for
Where did you get those beautiful body panels? I love the goat on the hood! It's almost ironic because the scientific term for goat is caprine. If I ever get a capra, I would absolutely need to source these panels.
I always get amazed how some cheaper rcs perform just as good as the high end ones. My Capo JK was about $1500 without electronics (took forever of buying/selling rcs to get it). While it's a great kit, imo I had cheaper rcs that did perform better.
That's super fast for crawling... I drive my crawler 5-10 times slower than that. It has a 50T brushed motor and I use air filled tires, to be able to be soft as possible. I recommend those both for awesome crawling experience, it grips like crazy and You can drive it ridicilously slow. It wil climb almost anything, with no "wheel speed" whatsoever needed.
Great fun mate! And, be honest, the Capra definitely has better ground clearance with those drop axles, (or whatever they're called), but isn't ten times better that the good ol' Ravine. Maybe 25% to 30% better. But with better tires, the Ravine comes much closer. Hmm, ok, I have modded my Ravine a bit, with approx 10mm more wheelbase and angled ally link bars, made by me. A friend at work has a Gmade R1, which is 3 times the Ravine price, but with pretty high spec. Though I haven't seen it in action yet.
I do like your Capra bro it is a thing of beauty, I really carnt wait to see what you do to improve your Ravine, Get some pointers of you 😉 so glad you got a Ravine though 👍 really a fantastic comparison video, Ftx done well though 😀 great vid Phil 👍😎👍😁👍
The ravine is a beast i have the redcat danche ridge rock same crawler i upgraded the tires and servos it out crawls my 7 and 800$ crawlers blew my mind was so impressed i bought my dad one lol👍😀💯
It did pretty good considering. I do think the motors mounted on the axles helped it have a low center of gravity (cog). Which would have helped, a lot of crawlers ‘fall over’ because the cog is too high up, that’s why people add weights low down. Overall for a cheap crawler for kids and people on a budget, it looked like good value to me.
I'm new to your channel I live the US Silverton Oregon on the west coast, for the price the Ravine is impressive with proper upgrades around $400 still only a $600 rig, your capra is a beast I have a Bomber with all vanquish links, rclions aluminum beadlocks, proline hyrax tires, Holmes Hobbies TMS 3300kv mamba x esc runs on Spectrum 3s 5000mhp it's a beast too great video I'm not a comp crawler either I just have lots of fun 😎👍
You can tell the clear difference in quality between the two. The ravine is a rickety old cheap sounding piece of crap. I’ve got about 12-1300$ into my axe edition gen8 and it’s a performer it’s all about where the money is placed.
The brushless crawler systems are the best I have a mamba x crawler combo. I didnt care much for the v1 axe due to the limitation of the esc. Either way brushless is the way to go lol. I have a hand build caged crawler a trx4 bronco with the mamba x crawler a highly modded gen7 pro and a danchee and it out crawls all of them lol great video thanks
To be fair put the same tires on both and see the results...I think it would be a draw..or maybe even the FTX would have edged out ahead...it is already light years ahead in the dollar for dollar or "pound for pound" category.....
I'm a bit underwhelmed for the money though, the axe is lots more than a 1060 or 1080, and doesn't seem to be proportionally better. I have one, and for the £180 it cost, it isn't that much better than a good 550 brushed with a 1080. If I was on a budget, no way would I buy it again. Yes it's top shelf, but no, it's not worth the cash when you are it on the trails.
The ravine has a bigger wheel size and way more flex then the average crawler they also tend 2 have a faulty ESC at least that's the problem I've had with it
The cheaper vehicle did better in some places because it's taller, That's why it went over the large Rock much easier but in other places where it's wider it was having a hard time going between rocks that were pinching it and keeping it from advancing.
To be fair, if you had £40 tyres on the cheap rc, had helped it by removing small twigs and chose better lines, like you did for the expensive one... They wouldn’t have been too far apart. I don’t mind comparisons, but that was far from a fair comparison.
Far from fair? lol... the Ravine had more help than the Capra, and couldn't take the same lines a lot of the time. After this video I swapped the wheels/tyres over.... spoiler alert... it wasn't really much better!
Thanks for sharing! I'm really impressed by the capability of the Ravine, it is a solid contender for it's price! This means that we don't have to spend alot of money to have some real fun! I understand that the Capra tops it but it also has more features to it that the Ravine does not have like it's weight, tires, brushless motor, locked rear wheels (digging function). I'm looking for a cheap crawler and the Ravine is certainly one I look forward to getting. What else would you suggest? (I don't mind the scale)
7:20 food!!
I had to fight the Wasps for it.....

hey Phil... way away from the RC thing, ya got blackberries there! pick about a 5 gallon bucket worth to juice them through woman's knee high stockings (picking happens fast if you tell some children you'll bake them a couple pies btw). put the juice in a 2 gallon jug with some yeast and a small pile of sugar on the floor of the jug, a cork with a hole to put a bubbler into or make yourself a bubbler with some aquarium tubing also works (a "crazy straw" is good too, just keep water in the lower halves of the loops). keep in a dark warm place, check if it needs water in the bubbler, or a little sugar added, about once a week. if you do it now you'll have some great blackberry "champagne" (it'll self carbonate) that'll be 10-12% alcohol for Christmas / New Years season. its really good special stuff!
for the pies, use about 1/2 whole berries and 1/2 juiced berry meat, they're getting boiled with some sugar, corn starch or gelatin anyway, pie crust is easy to make costs about nothing too. they look great with a lattice on top is also an "easy nothing".
the Ravine same as Redcat/Danchee RidgeRock, its lowlier little brother is the 40 dollar "Trail Hunter". with the Trail Hunter, peel the front tires there's just enough room between the tire beads for 4 turns of 2 mm solder (just did it). not bothering with the rears because a little up front is probably enough to help steering+traction climbing.
Nice recipe dude lol... There are hundreds of blackberry bushes at this place.... enough Alcohol for everyone at Christmas!
@@TomleyRC you'll be amazed how tasty the stuff is, for literal pennies!
I love rc channels. Im so glad i found this
I have the danchee which is the same moa I believe....I have changed the servos to full metal high torque and hyrax tires with 1.9 beadlocks and it's a monster.....it hasn't seen a line that it can't take that has been taken.
Two motors on the ravine. So could create some kind of dig, maybe using esc for twin motor setups if mixing. Just an idea.
I like the Capra ..It kind of has a front end like the new ryft
Why didn't u pick those blackberries😊
Well i was thinking about getting in to crawling until this video, $1200 and struggled with that first rock and the $120 didn't even breath hard lol.
Tires are taller and the center ground clearance is higher which makes a tall vertical ledge easier to climb over. Bothe those cars are built with different crawling styles in mind
In other words where one exceeds the other will struggle so on an so forth
But is it a fair test with different tires....i think it would be a better test to use the same wheels.
Since redcat released metal gears for the ridgerock/ravine. You should do a little bit of upgrades if you still have it, and do the challenge again.
Yes, tyres are a limiting factor. I have a video coming soon with the Hyrax on the Ravine... so stay tuned :)
1200??? JESUS CHRIST! I DONT WANNA DONATE A TESTICLE FOR A RC
Sometimes the sacrifice is worth it 😅
@@TomleyRC that costs more than a traxxas x maxx
Ayy no testicle jokes on RUclips, testicle jokes are mainly for top gear
For $1200 the donation does not include the "painless yank" option.
@@TomleyRC why yes,yes it is 😄. Sometimes you just gotta do it to have fun,lol
Looks neat, kind of looks like that $99.00 redcat one they have out.
Yes, the chassis is shared across a few brands
@@TomleyRC yup RidgeRock is the same, little different color scheme.
Both are cool,great crawling
Put good quality tyres on the ravine and rerun the test. The expensive one had an unfair advantage.
Interesting review, the ravine did well against the capra, but i think if we are honest the ravine may only last 12 months at least it would need a few new parts, i have the ECX Temper gen 2 as a second crawler and i do rather like it
Yes, you never know how long the cheap ones are going to last... but you never know!
Ravine on posh tyres... Mmm might have to be my next big savings project
As someone who has owned a few Redcat RS10s and currently owns a Danshee Ridgerock I have to say I love the Ravine.
Hello. I love the content. I would like to see a part 2. The content? Now modify the $120 one, compare the price point to the modifications and performance. At the end we can see which one has the bigger fun factor.
Yes, I will make some changes and go back for a second run
Thank you. I'm probably one of the fans that watch your content more than a couple of times. Lol
im surprised for the cost, i reckon makes some custom metal parts, try and find a way to give it a dig function and give it some high end tyres and it would competitive, i think beyond that, give it some heavier servos it would even be a winner, things like shocks and motors seem to be an after thought with improvements, though i would like the see some metal parts for it, tho thats just me
Of course lets compare a 1.9 shaft crawler to a 2.2 MOA. That is a fair comparison... Also there is durability to consider too.
Been looking at the ravine for a few weeks now this video this video just made be order one
I reckon the bigger wheels and more suspension night helped the cheap one.
I also hear axe body's fit on it too. :-)
I had this is the pool yes haha... goes really well in water actually!
Oilydiffs... (Facebook)... I think he imports them from some where. Yes, I call this the 'Golden Goat' lol
Nice. How much was just down to tyres though. The only real way of testing the actual car is to have the same tyres.
Put sticky tires on the cheap one and it beats the high dollar one
For the price that ravine was pretty impressive
I always get amazed how some cheaper rcs perform just as good as the high end ones. My Capo JK was about $1500 without electronics (took forever of buying/selling rcs to get it). While it's a great kit, imo I had cheaper rcs that did perform better.
oooo... a Capo JK! Yes please!
@@TomleyRC 😄😄 yes it's def a great truck but a very complex one,lol.
Really impressed with the Ravine for the price. Have you review the 9125? Looking for a nice basher new to the hobby not looking to spend alot.
Ive not reviewed the 1/10 Xinlehong, but they do look good yes. There 1/16 ones are very good
@@TomleyRC thanks alot
Are they waterproof?
If so could you do a video with music driving in the water???
Yes, the Ravine actually floats!
Nice!
Mabye a video on that?
Didn't expect that. Still love my Wraith Spawn.
I would love 1 of these crawlers if I had a place like that to take it to.
Great video mate. What would be a good comparison is the ravine with the Capra tyres?
my friend bought the ftx outback not long ago 200 rtr shipped its ok.......
Good price
I do like your Capra bro it is a thing of beauty, I really carnt wait to see what you do to improve your Ravine, Get some pointers of you 😉 so glad you got a Ravine though 👍 really a fantastic comparison video, Ftx done well though 😀 great vid Phil 👍😎👍😁👍
Thanks Tony. The Capra is lovely..... but cost a fortune haha. The FTX was also a beast for £99!
1:54 ("I hope my wife is not watching this video") it's the same everywhere, my friend, like here in Argentina...
😅
Good and fair test! Proline hyrax is great tire, also portal axles are simply superior.
Yes, Tyres can make or brake a Crawler!
ProLines vs stock tires... I wouldn't exactly call that fair. Not trying to be negative, but that is a big gap there.
The ravine is a beast i have the redcat danche ridge rock same crawler i upgraded the tires and servos it out crawls my 7 and 800$ crawlers blew my mind was so impressed i bought my dad one lol👍😀💯
Yes, Servos really do need upgrading!
Oh yeah, it's too bad that the cheaper one can't get portal axles. It would be a different story.
That capra is soooo nice
Agree!
4:30 LOL there you go! ;D
it matches the Danchee Rodgerock.
You can tell the clear difference in quality between the two. The ravine is a rickety old cheap sounding piece of crap. I’ve got about 12-1300$ into my axe edition gen8 and it’s a performer it’s all about where the money is placed.
The Ravine is very good for the money.. but it’s not compatible with some of the more scale stuff
Bigger wheels = Bigger ledges/rocks. Pretty simple.
The hobbywing axe is a beautiful system I run it in my trx4 it’s sooo smooth.
Yes, agree.... beautiful
I would only spend very little money on a crawler because I don't know if I will like crawling.
Get an element enduro trailwalker and put some wranglers on good heavy 1.9 beadlocks and you have an absolute beast for very cheap.
Better tyres & wheel weights the Ravine would seriously kick ass for the $. Awesome video 👍
Thanks Matt
i got the ridgerock and upgraded up the wazoo' and only cost me around 250 bucks.
