I watch every video you release,I’ve been watching your older videos as well and just wanted to say thanks mate. I hope you have a great new year.
Combining the looseness of the front suspension with the toe out it comes with out of the box is a recipe for difficult handling. Awful for new users to the brand, but especially the hobby. An exerience like that can put people off for good. Thanks for being honest and open in your review.
I saw this release and nearly pulled the trigger and purchased. So glad I saw your review first, you saved me some certain misery. Thank you and keep up the extraordinary work.
It's certainly a looker.! The RS4 Sport 3 chassis is best as their "Creator edition" rolling chassis version for £99.! The RTRs are overpriced for what they are. The chassis also needs aluminum front suspension & steering components, also rear hubs to get rid of the flex & play to help the handling.. The suspension isn't the best out the box but it can be adjusted. I've actually had two of them, I've used & abused them a lot, always on 3S brushless too, the running gear is pretty tough.! Also also.. THE SERVO SAVER IS TERRIBLE.!! They won't return to centre properly because there's too much play, I either super glue them or even better, just replace with a solid aluminium one.! I run DS Pro 25kg metal servos, they're fast enough, very tough & only cost £12.! Cheers Phil, all the best mate.!!
@TomleyRC It's more than a shame Phil, it's a bit of a piss take.!! Shame because the RS4 is a really solid RC at its core.! Hey, maybe you could do a video where you build "the ultimate" RS4.? You felt how good it was with just a gyro installed. Btw, don't break the motor mount, the stock ones are never available & Yeah racing/GPM are over £20 & aren't that great.!
With having to do that much to fix their issues, plus your later comment of replacement parts being an issue, I'm inclined to stay away from this platform. Surely there are better platforms out there for the money. (I assume, my only experience is with crawlers and just now looking to branch out.)
@@mkuhnactual I don't disagree, but just like any other RC it depends on what you see as being reasonable to get the desired result.!. At £99 plus around £40 for the steering upgrades you do end up with a decent, durable, good handling, tunable & versatile street bashing chassis that will take all the power you throw at it. The alternatives would be RCs like the Tamiya TT-01 or TT-02 (which also need upgrades like bearings(£15), oil diffs(£40) & an alloy driveshaft(£7) the FTX Banzai (which doesn't have the option of oil filled diffs so it doesn't drive as nicely) the Carten T410 (I'm not familiar with it, but looks good & is very tunable) & the Kyosho Fazer MK2 rolling chassis.. They all end up costing around the £150 mark, without bodies & electonics.
From what I can see, almost all the play is coming from the top link arms as they are just straight links and not triangulated allowing for back and forth movement.
@@thqpwell, I think it's a bit of the point. I think their point is that an upper link with two ball joints cannot prevent the knuckle from moving back and forth. This is the job of the lower control arm and its precise fitment, as shown here with the shimming done.
@YensR Y got it. The C-hub should have a precise fit to the A-arm even with the camber link removed entirely. Building a hinge-jointed camber link to reduce play elsewhere in the suspension adds unnecessary weight and complexity, and in the end it’s just masking the problem. A simple ball stud is easy to move up, down, in and out to tune the geometry. It’s possible with a hinge pin as well, but a bit more involved.
My tt-02 had this exact issue aswell as they have play in almost every part out the box, i fitted the genuine tamiya steering set but still did it, switched the gyro on on my receiver and BLAM drove fine😂 i run it on 3s with a 3300kv max10 combo and its really fun now! Oh, also had to upgrade the entire drivetrain to metal though as it spat many many parts out on 3s😂

HAPPY NEW YEAR you & your family PHIL! Never miss your videos. Always a lot of fun. I typed my comment before I watched all of this one! I hope you don’t ruin that beautiful BMW body!
I am glad to see HPI getting back in the game. That is such a beautiful body. I cant wait to get my hands on their new 18th crawler! Great video my dude!
Beautiful looking car. This is great problem solving on your part and a simple fix. HPI must have heard from its customers over the years about this problem. Decades ago HPI had some quality control issues in some of its products. You did an excellent review and test.
Taking out the servo saver and putting in a different servo made the etron version I've got usable. This platform isn't the best but when it works it can make you smile.
This video got me thinking on mine but I'm sure it's a platform issue. Servo and saver need changing but the slack on mine appears to be from the curved steering piece that goes under the prop shaft. I've swapped it to an alloy one but there's less play already. Hopefully this helps anyone who also struggles getting this to go straight at speed.
HPI should address this. They're trying to rise from the ashes of their previous success, and they have my full support in this - but they need to get their priorities right. Cars that sell on their looks but which later turn out to be problematic will end up disappointing customers. If this chassis won't respond to a setup which brings some front toe-in to the party, they should just accept that it's intrinsically unstable and fit a gyro as a stock component.
I’m really shocked it’s been an issue for so long without anyone really looking into fixing it 🤷🏼♂️. I’ve fed back to HPI, let’s see if they can sort it out
New HPI, same ole front wheel slop. I have one of these and I used a nitro exhaust manifold spring stretched across the center and hooked around the inner most steering balls. This pulls it tight together and eliminates most of the sloppiness.
After shims, a better servo and and a giro, mine is handeling much better. I use it mainly for bashing and made a Subaru rally car out of it with better shocks and more suspension travel and rally tires. I also put metal steering rods on, one of the play problems are the balls and plastic rods. Almost no play in the steering now, I will try this spring as suggested. Thanks !
I've had my sport 3 flux for around 8-10 years now, and it really is my favorite rc car to date. Over a decade i have only had very minor issues, the spur-gear tends to get worn down every now and then and my servo and servo saver went bad, but thats about it. I dont have issues with the steering, but i think that is because i have owned it for a decade. Whenever i let my friends have a go with it they would always spin it, i always just thought they had a skill issue until today lol
Man, all these cars are the same independent suspension. They’re all identical with little different features. They just sell them with different tires and a body. When is a company gonna make something new like a solid rear axle and a strut system just to be different
Sometimes it's the the servo saver which sticks a bit and won't allow return to centre. Had this problem with my Monster Beetle, replaced it with the Tamiya high torque hop up. Now it's absolutely fine.
True. I had an RS4 Mini with the VW Polo body, I think I got it in -98 or -99. It required professional setup skills to be driveable at all. I never got it to work right but a mate of mine did, their whole family was into RC racing.
I have an HPI Sprint 1 GTI, its like 30 yo an it handles like a KING! Easily my best driving car, and it has slop in suspension an steering... I think these lighter cars has to wobble a little bit to go really good, my tt02r has this sloppy stearing as well an it does handle great (but not like the hpi)
You can try adding some extra camber links to the tops of the hubs and attach to the chassis. I've done this on Tamiya and red cat chassis of similar design that had the same hub wobble issues and it works very well!
Excellent video!! Great fixes, the shim and the gyro!! Been tinkering on a drift project for a while now, and there's a lot of gyros out there, what would you recommend? I'm sure you've tried a bunch!! Looked into your video history, and saw a SkyRC gyro you talked about 6 years ago, but, obviously theres been a lot of new additions!! Keep up the great work!
30 years ago a friend of mine had a Tamiya 4WD car he could not get to go in a straight line. It was set up with toe-out in the front. Switcing it to toe-in fixed the issue.
I always liked HPI, I do wish them more success and I think we "need" them (some brands are just too "comfortable" in the hobby). That being said, the steering issue is totally unacceptable. Especially if it's been around for so long. HPI should do something about it asap, that steering looks like pasta! Having such a product on their catalogue is terrible marketing.
When you said you had found a fix, I thought you were going to say it was the wheels/tyres that was the issue. The Rlaarlo 917 and 787 metal chassis cars have a similar issue out the box with feeling like you are driving on ice when trying to go fast in a straight line. Changing the wheels/tyres on them cures it.
Yep that’s a problem! when there’s play like that it causes major toe in under power then major toe out when your off power and braking. I deal with it on both my slashes🙄
I just want to add that gyros are a lifesaver! I have one slash with and one slash without a gyro and it’s a huge difference. The one without a gyro will instantly spin out as soon as you get off the throttle from wide open
I’ve had my rs4 for a decade. U need softer springs, the yeah racing aluminum steering cranks, and to get rid of the servo saver to get them to handle right
The steering reminds me of the Kyosho Fazer MK2. I have the brushless L version and the Charger body, I stuffed every steering joint with o-rings to get rid of a lot of the play. They just arent made to take 3s power
Tweaking is why I love this hobby ,to get a perfect car would be nice but Impossible to please everyone to make it perfect. Therefore I love finding a good car and working out what will make it better, for me anyways.😁🍻♥️👍
Cracking video Phil. Could it be down to the radio gear being used? Also now the other issues are dialled in. I think running it on a different receiver and radio, my help. Be good to know if this can also solve the problem
Idk if anyone said yet but you said somewhere about toe out in the front. Maybe RC is different that reg car cause the toe out on a car makes the steering wheel all over the place, it can't find a "line". Toe it in a little past straight (not straight on, same prob) and check that. Cheers!
I genuinely love hpi stuff. Fond memories. But they need to put this chassis out to pasture. I spent ages fannying around trying to sort all it's issues but i gave up in the end. I also had the sprint 2 model, a porsche 911 gt3, which was belt driven, and it was miles better. It's a shame they can't sort it. Cos that beemer looks mint. 👌🏻
dam look's so cool , they should of put led's in the indicator spot's but not have a option to turn them on ;) lol or every time you stop it puts the hazards on lol, I gotta stop ragging on the BMW inditator thing lol and HPI kinda sucks, always look ok/good never work like the competition .... Hope you have a Merry New Year Buddy 💯❤🔥
Glad I watched this one as it’s been on my wish list for a while, but I think the money is going to build my rally car. Based on ….wait for it a Hobao sc10 st.
Great stuff as always mate.deffo a great looking car.you should get hold of the maverick quantum rally and compare to some of your other rally cars.i got one 2weeks ago and it's wkd fun.and amazing value for money I think.£224 ATM.be good to see and hear your thoughts
I bought a HPI WR8 Flux in November and it was nearly undriveable out of the box on 2S. Th ecar wouldn't go straight and never returned to the same "center" point after giving steering input. In my car's case, it did end up just being the steering servo, and replacing with another I had around did the trick. I love the car now, but man, that first run with the bad servo was disappointing after so many good reviews.
I definitely agree a 10 year old problem should not be . I thought the same on the gyro fix. So let's see if they listen an do a v2 as the price tag should come with already.
Exotek makes an aluminum steering rack for the sport 3 that helps a lil bit. Mainly, prevents rocks from jamming the rack. I actually like the sprint 2 better for the optional one-way diff in the front, for an e-brake feel. I would rather deal with the belt drive issues over the sport 3 steering issues.
On that 2nd speed run attempt could some of that left and right pulling be the curvature of the road vertically I mean. How it’s highest in the center and dips to the sides. I have that problem on my road. Just a thought.
I wonder if the chassis is felxing at speed. It looks thin and maybe the road vibrations are cause deflection. Might be why the problem is still being chased.
I've run this chassis as my primary rig for a couple years now and a little toe-in on the front wheels goes a long way for high speed straight line stability.
What's up. Absolute love your content and channel you help a lot of us get through hard times especially help me kill time at work 🙏 Happy holidays and have an amazing new years. May you find success in all your endeavors in the new year ahead. 🎉
Im generally right handed (writing, using tools, Table Tennis , cricket, Pistol shooting) but left handed with others (eating, playing pool, rifle shooting) and cant do any with both hands. Im left handed with an RC and had to get a Noble NB4-wish other manufacturers could have come up with that controller-awesome idea.
Phil love your work channel is unreal have you seen the new hnr foxhound h9804 rally car any chance you could review one to see if its as good as the panther and werewolf
I have a RS4 3 Heritage editio also. Does the same thing. HPI never improve or update any of their cars. I love HPI. Just wish they would get back in the game.
I’m looking for something solid rear axle 1/10-1/8 scale with IFS either rwd or 4wd but all I can find is the Baja Rey and element crawlers, can you think of any others? Any suggestions would be appreciated and we’d love to see your guitar collection as well
I have a rs4 sport 3 ken block edition 1965 mustang body one chassis still the same and it goes where it wants also no matter what. And if u get a rock in it won't turn at all. And that happens a lot. I've also changed to many servos and metal servo horns still goes everyway but straight.

I’ve got the truck version. So good for the money!
I know it could remove some of the fun, but could you weight it down a bit? That could force traction which could improve the steering maybe
Niiiice, a car from my youth, god, I'm old
Yeah, they are awesome 🤘
I definitely agree a 10 year old problem should not be . I thought the same on the gyro fix. So let's see if they listen an do a v2 as the price tag should come with already.
“Slight tintin” got me hahaha
😅
Exotek makes an aluminum steering rack for the sport 3 that helps a lil bit. Mainly, prevents rocks from jamming the rack. I actually like the sprint 2 better for the optional one-way diff in the front, for an e-brake feel. I would rather deal with the belt drive issues over the sport 3 steering issues.
On that 2nd speed run attempt could some of that left and right pulling be the curvature of the road vertically I mean. How it’s highest in the center and dips to the sides. I have that problem on my road. Just a thought.
That being said clearly that has some struggling to go straight no matter what. Wow.
Wish they would put a better offset on the rear wheels
I wonder if the chassis is felxing at speed. It looks thin and maybe the road vibrations are cause deflection. Might be why the problem is still being chased.
hope HPI sends you something for finding that's been a long time problem a fix (gyro)
Plz do a review on the ldrc 1297
Please re run after getting some better ball joints/turnbuckles. Bring front toe to zero or positive 1 degree
My first car was a mint 1974 2002 Tii, this is cool
I've run this chassis as my primary rig for a couple years now and a little toe-in on the front wheels goes a long way for high speed straight line stability.
What's up. Absolute love your content and channel you help a lot of us get through hard times especially help me kill time at work 🙏 Happy holidays and have an amazing new years. May you find success in all your endeavors in the new year ahead. 🎉
Appreciate it dude. Happy Holidays to you too 🤘
New version just released!! Now comes with shims included in the box 😜
RS5 Sport +
14:03 Nope , it pretty sure that's exactly what you get out stock of the box.
Came here to say the exact same thing 😂
Hey your mirrors never fell off😊
Loving that one, looks great fun!
I'm not sure if it's a replica, but there's an Orange one tucked away in a garage on my estate. I'll have to do some more invest :)
Would like hpi to resell the bodies they use to sell. Charger, surpa, etc
I know a few right handed people that do some strange left handed stuff 😅
@@TomleyRC I tried, for quite a while, just couldnt get my head round it.
Phil love your work channel is unreal have you seen the new hnr foxhound h9804 rally car any chance you could review one to see if its as good as the panther and werewolf
Got one on order ;)
Hi tomley, can you compare the wl124017 and typhon grom in terms of handling and durability
Grom is better Quality… but for the money the WLToys is awesome
@TomleyRC thanks for the answer, i really appreciate it👍👍
I have a RS4 3 Heritage editio also. Does the same thing. HPI never improve or update any of their cars. I love HPI. Just wish they would get back in the game.
I wanna see you running this RTR’s on a On road track🔥
Me too!
See of you can get the builders to take the curb stones out while there there
Front lifts at high speed? Loosen up that front diff - maybe good for drifting / rallying, but not high speed tracking.
Cool rc car Video 🤩🤣😍👑♥️🌞👏👏👍🔥🌲
Cheers dude
Why u got free on the v3 big rock is it a competition merry Christmas love your content got a couple of truck's myself
Link in description and pinned comment 😇🤘
Shims! I want to see that part.
Nice van, got me a Metris
Even tho you said it’s been a long going issue.
Have you tried swapping the tyres around?. Could possibly be an issue in the compound?.
I’m looking for something solid rear axle 1/10-1/8 scale with IFS either rwd or 4wd but all I can find is the Baja Rey and element crawlers, can you think of any others? Any suggestions would be appreciated and we’d love to see your guitar collection as well
NOT a Beemer fan but DAM this look's AMAZING I actually want this!!!
I have a rs4 sport 3 ken block edition 1965 mustang body one chassis still the same and it goes where it wants also no matter what. And if u get a rock in it won't turn at all. And that happens a lot. I've also changed to many servos and metal servo horns still goes everyway but straight.
Hello from Arkansas USA.! I am also a lefty. And I also drive righthand. You know, they say lefties are in their right mind!
