As a drummer myself I don't think Mitch Mitchell get the recognition he deserves as one of the greatest of all time. To keep the beat and freelance with Jimi was incredible.
Bonham and Moon were the kings of their era, and Mitch was in a band named after the lead guitarist/singer. If they were simply named "The Experience", he and Redding would be involved in the GOAT conversation, in my opinion. Everyone focuses on Jimi, its kind of a shame, all due respect to guitar God Jimi.

Damn, what an exciting time it was in those days to be alive. I wasn't a radical, and I loved my country. I played in a rock and roll band, with some recognition, and knew some of the serious rockers of the time that are now considered the pros of that time. I married in 69 and had 4 daughters, and have lots of grandchildren, Sometimes they asked me "How was it grandpa ?" Not sure about that. There are also other covers that were better than the originals. Examples were: Hurt by Johnny Cash (originally by Nine Inch Nails) Come Together by Michael Jackson (originally by The Beatles) I Will Always Love You by Whitney Houston (originally by Dolly Parton)
People don't realize how much of an innovative leap this was in music history. Consider the type of music that existed just 10 years before in the 50s, the change is mind blowing
I meet jimi in 1968 and he was so Good and Gentle , But when he started to play , He's Change , if Conversation is about guitar... for Sure jimi is the Best! The G.O.A.T!
The melody and flow of this song is just beautiful. It literally transports you to another time and place. It's like Dylan was meant to write this song just so Hendrix could cover it.
R.I.P. to the late great James Marshall Hendrix. The greatest guitar player planet earth has ever seen! Gone but never forgotten! Rest easy Jimi! We love you!
Rip brother Indeed. When he was in Greece he heard a bouzouki player named manolis hiotis also rip . He was astonished the way his fingers were moving fast and correct. He did not say hey iam Jimmy Hendrix and i am the best ,he said wowwww he is better than me. That was another reason that Jimmy was the greatest of all time....
Yes this is a fact he is the greatest in the world. I'm sorry but I just cannot stand listening to people telling me that Eddie Van halen, or Jimmy page, or whomever is the greatest I mean don't get me wrong they're all good in their own rights but like let's be real Jimi Hendrix set the bar . And he really brought experimenting with the guitar to a whole new level, like stuff people really didn't think of or even they're doing before him. Yes there were some who definitely did but not on his level. Yeah Jimi Hendrix I was f****** amazing
"All Along the Watchtower" was first written and recorded by Bob Dylan. The song initially appeared on his 1967 album, John Wesley Harding. Then came Jimmy with the same song with a hard rock class by it self. I was 14 years old when I first heard Jimmy's song on a cheap plastic Phillips radio with hidden cigarettes in my pocket at my parents home. The best ride ever. The rest is history and I will never forget.
That’s awesome, thank you for sharing your experience! Stories like that never get old and speak volumes about how strong a feeling can be regardless of how much time has passed.
Yes! The Hendrix performance of this song is the absolute best. There are only a few examples when a cover is better than the original and this is definitely on of them. No one has done this song as well as Jimi Hendrix and the only close version is Lenny Kravits and Eric Clapton. All others are somewhere on the spectrum below.
I was in my teens when this was released. I'm now 67 years old and it's still one of my favourite songs, most definitely eclipsed the era. Bob Dylan wrote the song but later said it wasn't his anymore - it belonged to Jimi. It is a fitting tribute to Hendrix's genius and inspiration that he took this simple 3 chord song and transformed it into a musical masterpiece - beautiful, ethereal and unforgettable.
Most people focus in on him as the greatest guitarist of all times, of which he was. But what many miss is his voice. He had an exceptional voice. Just listen to him.
the reason people focus on his playing and not singing is because singing good isn’t original or captivating, but holy shit the way he played the guitar was the most captivating thing on the planet, and quite literally the most original style, he expanded guitar vocabulary 1000x as much as he did lyrically
Wait... What??? His voice was WHAT???? He was ONE of the greatest... His voice, not so much but was perfect for Jimi. Unique, I must say... Another great one was of course Stevie Ray Vaughan who is with Jimi as we speak... No doubt having guitar contests in the sky!!!

My sister Jan saw Jimmy in concert, In either Hollywood or Ft. Lauderdale, Fl. Mom and I waited outside the place for 20minutes and heard a lot of Jimmy from outside the entrance at PIRATES WORLD in Fla. Around 1968
Dylan has described his reaction to hearing Hendrix's version: "It overwhelmed me, really. He had such talent, he could find things inside a song and vigorously develop them. He found things that other people wouldn't think of finding in there. He probably improved upon it by the spaces he was using. I took license with the song from his version, actually, and continue to do it to this day." In the booklet accompanying his Biograph album, Dylan said: "I liked Jimi Hendrix's record of this and ever since he died I've been doing it that way... Strange how when I sing it, I always feel it's a tribute to him in some kind of way."
I think hendrix would drop lsd and play ALOT. He was said to have his guitar in his hand 24/7 this gave him a new perspective on teh sounds a guitar was possible of making, the rest is history.
This as Bob Dylan admitted it the definitive version of the song. The amazing guitar, the brilliant singing and the sublime production is something you rarely come across across. Listen through headphones to hear the amazing cross over from right to left on the headphones, I've still not heard anything like it since.
I am 65 years old. And 4 those of u guys \gals the experience of living that generation is beyond words. Many men N women live and die, but the message was clear. As it has always been. Make Love, not War. In today's generation it is no different. Good Luck.......
+Jesse Maldonado In the 60's it was "Make Love, Not War" and "Love is all you need". Then, in the 70's it was "Do your own thing". Then in the 80's it was "Just say no". Personally, I prefer the phrases of the 60's.
mitch mitchell is one of the most underrated forgotten drummers in history... to keep up with jimmy was a feat in itself, plus his fills are phenomenal and he's not shy with the sticks...great trio, very well rounded...
Mitch was originally trained as a Jazz drummer. That's why he could keep a constant stream running, not just a tempo groove. Jimi would not have sounded as good with a different drummer.
My big brother used to inflict this on me, at max volume, from his room across the corridor, while I was trying to do my homework or listen to Abba or whatever. After a while I realised it wasn't an infliction any more, and that I wanted him to turn it up :-)
It is amazing that 224 million people viewed this clip - with no video to view - but just to listen to Hendrix's rendition of the song. He was truly an extraordinary guitarist!!.
Yes that is impressive. And yet many in younger generations will ask 'who's Jimi Hendrix?' What's far more popular to them is something musically simple, like verbally violent, musically sterile rap music A catchy pop song called 'Uptown funk' over has 5 billion views. I Googled for Taylor Swift and found one called 'Shake it off' has over 3 billion. At the other end of the spectrum, master acoustic guitar player, Al Petteway posted a lot on RUclips 7+ years ago, yet most have less than 10k views
Jimi Hendrix was So Incredibly Talented, So Great, So Pure, So Honest and So Creative... as Great as he was, he Always felt that he had to keep playing and keep trying to improve his Music and his Guitar playing... at Only 27 years old he Completely Changed The World and Rock Music Forever!
Jirapat Thaenphromrat Robert Johnson was the Jimi Hendrix of his day and laid the foundation of Blues that Hendrix, Eric Clapton and Jimmy Page would build upon... Robert Johnson was like the 1st Man to fly an Airplane and Jimi Hendrix was like the 1st man to fly to the Moon. Although the Blues was his foundation, Hendrix went way beyond the Blues...
Jimmy J Jimi hendrix is real good tho. But he can't make me feel a chill down my spine like Robert. I love blues (P.s They both died at the age of 27. COINCIDENCE?)
Seriously, I haven't seen that quote before. The more I think about it, the more I think it's as good a definition of genius as I've ever seen - and by this definition, I'd say Jimi's playing here is that of a genius.
Simply put, Jimi had supreme Imagination, and supreme playing ability.....He could play the guitar in a dark room...he knew where where his fingers on the guitar at any time....he was one with his guitar...the guitar was just an extension of his mind..
My mum met and shook hands with Jimi in a club in London in the late 60s. He was wearing a flame orange satin suit and a hat with a feather in it. She shook hands! When she told me my response was "and you WASHED IT"? She met quite a few back then as a band whose name has just fallen from my mind, had a roadie who lived in the same flats as us. I remember her (tho she wishes I didn't) going to see Ravi Shanka in Covent Garden whilst she was wearing an orange sari! Peace dudes especially the old uns from back then. Rock on; I hope to.
This is one of the greatest songs of all time. It's literally TIMELESS. Jimmi was just ooooozing with the spirit of the time like I feel like this song sounded like how ALOT of people felt back then. Amazing..
I remember listening to this when I was 16 or 17 back in 1985 - with headphones on - stoned. Man it took me to another place. Up in the stratosphere. Excellent stuff.

He found things that other people wouldn't think of finding in there. He probably improved upon it by the spaces he was using. I took license with the song from his version, actually, and continue to do it to this day."
