Played this on the beach with my mates in Cornwall in 1969, one of the guys had brought a portable battery driven record deck. Utterly amazing, still the best intro to any song ever in the history of intro's.
Merry Clayton's voice crack on the word "murder" at 3:00 might be the best "happy accident" ever recorded. You can hear someone else in the studio react to it with a "Whoo." They knew it was a magical music moment.
That was Mick yelling in approval as Merrys voice cracked. Afterwards said she would do it again and hit the note, Mick was like.. NO!.. THAT IS PURE GOLD!!!!!!.. It was at night and a pregnant Mary was literally in her hair curlers in the bed when the stones rep contacted her at home to do the song. Mary originally said no she wasn't getting out of her comfy bed. It was Mary's husband that convinced her to go, as it was paying good money. It being late at night and her being tired helped to contribute to one of the best voice cracks ever recorded. It's here on you tube. 20ft from stardom
Cheers Mike - great comment!. I think when she cracks the top note, there's an ultra high pitch note which pierces through exactly in tune - but way up to the ceiling. Mick hears it the moment. Diamond stuff. I love the way she reminisces in this clip. ruclips.net/video/ChONufP0FEs/видео.html
The song would be a really good song without her voice. Her voice MADE this song great and cemented it in history. Especially when she gets tired during the all night recording session and her voice is breaking. It gives the song more depth and feeling. Classic! Unfortunately Merry soon lost her baby, as she was pregnant at the time of this recording.

When I first heard Gimme Shelter, back in the day, it was the best song I ever heard, years later nothing has changed, it stands alone. Absolutely brilliant
agrer with you 💯👏 it reinterpreted what i felt about the Stones brilliance, i didn't think they could elevate their status any more until i heard this at 17yrs old. Decades later it's still my favourite.
Im a major Stones fan, seen them 60 times. There is no other song ever written, by them or by others, that can touch Gimme Shelter. The impending doom of the time, the impending doom of today, forever relevant, this song
I can never get enough of that dark multi-layered guitar riff intro by Keith Richards echoing around Merry Clayton’s soaring vocal. It never grows old, I’ve loved it since I heard it as child in the early 70s. It’s the greatest intro I’ve ever heard in a rock song, it will never be bettered 🙏🏽
@@roadrunnerproductionshavas1591 I heard about that, Merry is an unusually resilient woman with a formidable reputation for working relentlessly. She put tremendous effort into recording sessions with the Stones for Gimme Shelter, during her pregnancy. The Stones were reeling from Brian Jones death in summer 1969 and not in a great financial situation at the time, and the deadly Altamont concert disaster nearly destroyed them as a band later that year. But I would like to think that they gave Merry their support in some way after she suffered that huge baby miscarriage trauma. She made Gimme Shelter a huge hit for the Stones, and it came with a great sacrifice on her part. She survived a serious car accident in her mid 60s which left her a double leg amputee, but she’s still busy in the music industry as if the accident (2014) was just a blip, at 75 years of age! This is a woman of great character who deserves so much more.
This was my husbands favourite song of all time. We played it at his funeral. His little 11 year old granddaughter sang it out loud and proud. They sang it together all the time. Beautiful memories 😢😢😢 The last concert he was at was the stones in Dublin with his daughters and eldest grandson. This was the song he wanted all night. Thank you for playing it. ❤❤
Adding Merry Clapton to this song really put the cherry on top! The Rolling Stones knew how to push people to perform onto the next level! Check out Kaz Bielinski’s single “Love Never Dies” where he pushes his music to a whole new next level! ruclips.net/video/2vosjfyBXJM/видео.html

Paul Dud 6 minutes ago (edited) I always, thought this was one of Mick Jagger's sarcastic pro-drug addict's songs. I never could hear the lyric clearly, like in many Rolling Stones songs. Instead it is a slam song to the 19 year olds that were drafted into Vietnam war and the ones that survived and alive today must hate this song. I think our U.S.A. should have let Germany kick England's ass during WW ll , then helped them afterward. Had the Jagger's survived , then Mick Jagger might have had more respect for Veterans. I always heard ''Whoa children it's just a shot away'' and not ''War children'' !
Merry Clayton. Was awaken at midnight by friend and great producer, Jack Nitzsche, to come down to the studio and sing. She was pregnant, did it anyway, and had a miscarriage on her return home. This song has a lot of weird stories attached to it.
Merry Clayton supposedly lost her child shortly after laying down this absolutely heart-wrenching performance... her voice crack is the human equivalent to a pinch harmonic on a guitar and it covers me in goosebumps and sends shivers down my spine Every. Single. Time.
Musically I think this is one of their best songs. Richards knew how to hold down! Lyrics are truthful. RIP Charlie Watts. Brilliant underestimated drummer.
Nothing ‘underestimated’ about Charlie aka the fabulous time keeper Watts. Is this ‘term’ new lingo for the way~over~used ‘underrated’, tell me it ain’t so…
@@KittyGrizGriz you've got a point... but I still say under estimated cos he never sought out the glory.... a different type of rock and roller! He came across as humble. And I loved the fact he had a jazz band
Never knew the name of the singer with the soprano voice... She does have an awesome range. I always envied that. I am a female but have a guy like tenor voice.
Lol my mom and me tell people all the time that this bands way better than the Beatles. This band put it on ! These guys forever have became a defining roll in rock culture and music. This is where is set the bar. If they ain’t the stones they ain’t worth it. Lol I really like the stones CCR , gotta get ya some Marshall Tucker band in there , some Jim Croce in there and gotta have my Led Zeppelin and of corse the greatful dead. I throw on some Sly and the family Stone once in awhile , I also like Al Green , way before he became a Christian enthusiast- I do enjoy some love making music man… you know what I mean , gotta love the music my mom grew up to. The music of the greatest generation that ever lived.
Whenever Martin Scorsese passes away, I guarantee you that this song’s popularity will re-emerge in memory of his films Goodfellas, Casino and The Departed.
No joke, that voice crack at "Rape, Murder" is one of the most important things in music. You can even hear someone saying "Woah" in the background because they knew they were making rock history. Not that I blame them, I would've done the same. Like if you would've done that too. Also have a great day!
Well, that might be the case, but I will take every opportunity to transfer my consciousness into something a little more permanent. If I manage that I will be certain to come and lay flowers on your grave, worm fodder. Any preference of flower type or color?
This tune was released in 1969 and considered by many to be a commentary on the state of the world at that time. To me it is still as relevant, haunting and beautiful as ever.
Merry Clayton, backing vocals for The Stones', Gimme Shelter", and Clare Torry, backing vocals for Pink Floyds', "Great Gig In The Sky".....two of the greatest of all time...we just don't hear music like that anymore. That time...that era...that aura....will never be topped...
The phrase underrated gets handed out like dinner mints But those that know will tell you Charlie Watts is the most underrated drummer ever. He's the glue. Make no mistake Charlie is perfection
I’m 50 years old and still get good bumps while listening to this song. It brings up so many memories of me growing up in west-Berlin hearing my parents play the stones day in day out. Under my thumb, paint it black, street fighting man, she’s a rainbow and so many more classics that will never loose their magic. The Rolling Stones at their very best. Time flies
Reminds me of Germany too... at a Kaserne north east of Frankfurt on Fulda Gap flying choppers after reunification and into Balkan missions and then 9/11/2001 and spearheading Iraq War in 2003 while having just left Germany after years and getting into 101st Airborne Division. I was in Kentucky/Tennessee at ft Campbell for two weeks and flew back to Germany that I had just left, refueled and ended up in Kuwait right on iraq border 28feb2003... by march17th of that year, every second of every day became "just a shot away"... things get finicky and strange in War, but hell, when can one have so much adrenaline legal by ones own government? We were bullet magnets in the air those first few weeks, but by may, we were victorious... whatever that means...
I'm so sorry for your loss- I hope that you'll be able to listen to The Rolling Stones, watch his favorite films and simply member all of the beautiful memories you have together with a smile. After all, grief is only so painful because we were lucky enough to have loved somebody so fantastic in the first place. Take care, I'm pouring a glass of wine and toasting to your husband as I'm listening to this song
Sending condolences from a stranger to another, I too have a deep connection to this song, my parents used to play all their music when I was younger and the stones being one of their favourite bands(mothers) I was always looking into my fathers record collection, it was when I was 16/17yrs if she my mother knocked upon my bedroom door to give me the sad news my grandfather (her father) had passed away, I remember closing the door pressing play on my tape deck and this is the song that came on, I hope you carry great memories into tomorrow and keep those cherished moments forever. ❤️
Melancholy and despair with powerful vocals overflowing with energy. Everything from the Guitars, Drums, Sax, Piano but especially the Vocals all make this the sound of 1969. Still echoes powerfully 55 years later with the same vigor as if it were released yesterday inspired by the issues of the day. I want this played at my Funeral.
I used to sit in my car in my high school parking lot and listen to this song full blast before starting school every morning. I'm now 68 years old and I still listen to it for motivation. It's one of the most moving songs of all time.

The part where merry’s voice cracks is beautiful. So happy they kept that, as well as mick’s “whoooo”. That’s heart. Something you don’t see in new music.
The last time I ever saw my dad before he passed away he told me that this was his favorite song and that he had always taken every chance to see the Stones in concert. Everytime I listen to it now I remember my dad and think about how he spent his young rebellious days listening to this long before I was born. Somehow this song is like a time machine to a place I never witnessed myself. Still, I can feel it so deeply.
Hands down, my favorite Rolling Stones song. Mick Jagger’s best effort in the studio. Keith and the Stones are all on point as well and Merry Clayton makes this song epic.
almost nobody in the comments is mentioning Brian Jones. He was the head and arranger of the songs in the recording studio. After he died the Rolling Stones songs took a dive.
Iconic track from the 60's Vietnam era with Merry Clayton adding a nice twist to the vocals that make this song one of the most memorable in music history
I'm a 19 year old listening to this for the first time, and I just can't believe how absolutely amazing it is. I'm so glad about the fact that although people don't make this kind of music anymore, we can still listen to it!
Many music critics and fans consider "Gimme Shelter" the greatest song ever produced by the Stones. Include me in that group. I always thought it was amazing that they kept Merry Clayton as the background singer since her powerful vocals dominate the song. It didn't seem like something that Jagger's ego could handle. But she contributed her parts in a few takes, which Jagger remarked was "pretty amazing."
This would have been a great song even with another backing vocalist, but Merry Clayton takes it to the epic level. She was only 21 when the Stones recorded this masterpiece.
She was actually called from her home late in the evening to come to the session. She showed up in her pajamas, a bathrobe, and curlers in her hair! True story...

La base ritmica, evidente all' inizio e che perdura durante tutto il pezzo, mi pare un 2 + 3 caraibico, tipo guaguancò cubano : decisamente originale per un brano rock.

You bet! It's been my favorite too!

Im a major Stones fan, seen them 60 times. There is no other song ever written, by them or by others, that can touch Gimme Shelter. The impending doom of the time, the impending doom of today, forever relevant, this song
It has been my ringtone & heard daily 😊
I can never get enough of that dark multi-layered guitar riff intro by Keith Richards echoing around Merry Clayton’s soaring vocal. It never grows old, I’ve loved it since I heard it as child in the early 70s. It’s the greatest intro I’ve ever heard in a rock song, it will never be bettered 🙏🏽
I'm with you 100%. Best song intro of all time
Its sad that the back up singer merry clayton went home after singing this song and lost her baby because of it.
The vocal at the beginning is actually Mick Jagger singing in falsetto.
@roadrunnerproductionshavas1591 how did she lose her baby?
Two thumbs up for this woman's powerful voice!!!
This was my husbands favourite song of all time. We played it at his funeral. His little 11 year old granddaughter sang it out loud and proud. They sang it together all the time. I always, thought this was one of Mick Jagger's sarcastic pro-drug addict's songs.
