I'm preparing to perform this song for a dying friend. It was one of the very first songs I learned to sing and play guitar with. He introduced the song to me a little over fifty years ago, and I could never get it out of my head after that. I'm giving it back to him for the trip home. May this simple gift carry you there. Travel well, my dear friend, George Martinez.

In 1972 I dropped out of college, parked my Mach 1 Mustang and hitchhiked across the US. I was hoping to get to Oregon, but it was February - March and the weather stopped me. @Niki K98 what dude? where did he say it?
@Niki K98 that's not the answer to my question.
@Niki K98 You shouldn't claim any information that you can't defend/back up with any reference. That's funny, sad and stupid at the same time. Take care.
@Niki K98 It's a figure of speech man, he could have said 100 years or 2000 years but he chose 1000. There is no monopoly on words, just because Hitler said the word "1000" once doesn't mean other people can't use it.

The sky was blue aaaand the water was wet and the horse was brown . Brilliant
Don't forget the heat was hot😅
Lyrics
On the first part of the journey
I was looking at all the life
There were plants and birds and rocks and things
There was sand and hills and rings
The first thing I met was a fly with a buzz
And the sky with no clouds
The heat was hot, and the ground was dry
But the air was full of sound
I've been through the desert
On a horse with no name
It felt good to be out of the rain
In the desert, you can remember your name
'Cause there ain't no one for to give you no pain
La, la, la, la, la, la
La, la, la, la, la, la
La, la, la, la, la, la
La, la, la, la, la, la
After two days in the desert sun
My skin began to turn red
After three days in the desert fun
I was looking at a river bed
And the story it told of a river that flowed
Made me sad to think it was dead
You see I've been through the desert
On a horse with no name
It felt good to be out of the rain
In the desert, you can remember your name
'Cause there ain't no one for to give you no pain
La, la, la, la, la, la
La, la, la, la, la, la
La, la, la, la, la, la
La, la, la, la, la, la
After nine days, I let the horse run free
'Cause the desert had turned to sea
There were plants and birds and rocks and things
There was sand and hills and rings
The ocean is a desert with it's life underground
And a perfect disguise above
Under the cities lies a heart made of ground
But the humans will give no love
You see I've been through the desert
On a horse with no name
It felt good to be out of the rain
In the desert, you can remember your name
'Cause there ain't no one for to give you no pain
La, la, la, la, la, la
La, la, la, la, la, la
This needs more likes
Thank you very much!

This song marked my life in college. I went to California in 1976 and the song was enjoying a revival on the radio. I associated it with travel, growth , and transition.
This song is a great NLP chucking down to immerse the conscious and make one ready for good vibes.....

❤❤❤ almost every day, i have a record of their songs, love all 60's and 70's band ,being born in the 50 's ❤❤❤❤
Totally love this song, it's haunting. Brings back many memories of long ago, those amazing friends, the music, the clothes! Wish we'd stayed in touch, miss them even today. Great band, mountains of talent. Wow, such times you can never imagine, or perhaps you do.
For me, Kwajalein.
For me this song was playing in the arena while I was taking my first riding lessons on a horse . Well, it stuck for sure 30 years later 💜
@garyhastings, hi! Yes, those were the days , the sing and dance we thought it’ll never end!!!! Best beautiful memories of an era that is unrepeatable. At least for us who lived through it. Great emotional times! I miss the seventies, I’m still stuck in it and will forever be!!!!!!!!
@@carmenkamberos1156 Hi Carmen, totally agree with your comment and thanks. I guess I just didn't think I would grow older and how these times are now mere history. At least we survived it.😎
GTA and Breaking Bad. Nostalgia baby. That solo though!!
This song was created a long, long time before breaking bad.
@@alexanderbanman9288 But we were introduced to this classic through GTA SA and BB.
And, bojack horseman
@@sakshyamghimire6435 hell yeah

I’m 67 and this is one of my most favorite songs. I finally got to see America in concert 2 years ago. Best music and best stage presence. I cried during this song. I was so happy to see them in person Singing it.
❤❤❤❤ Thank you All The Saints in Heaven.Glory to Our Kingdom Heaven ❤❤
This is one of those songs that bring my childhood back to life.
A great song !
Singing this in the countryside of San Andreas.
Total classic. If this song can't relax you then maybe you should re-examine what you're doing in your life!
My dad died and the voice of the lead singer brought back so much memories we would sit and play these on reel to reel i would be ready fast to thread it back when it spooled off thanks for introducing me to nice music dad ...
Imagine making a beautiful song about a biome and it becomes a masterpiece brilliant 👏 💯💯
My new born apparently loves this song. He sleeps peacefully listening to it! 💓
That song is as soothing as they come. The whole spirit of America is peace and miles away from the rat race.
Then the ancestors watch over him as well the land, this song finds true Americans
Oh my gosh those amazing memories this song brings! Takes deep breath~~~if only could go back in time~
If only one could go back in time and just freeze ..... Everybody would be free to pick his own favorite time. Personally I would choose year 1978, I was 14 back then.
@@christophedallaporta8836 1975 I was 18. I agree with you Christophe:)
@@DCA66 - You must have been born in "57" !!!
@Dca, yes, yes I do want to go back in time and stay there forever, best years of my life. I was 26 then…. Lots of rain since then, but I still love this song, it’s melancholic, touches the heart so deeply ! Love was on the air everywhere. Days were dreamy and easy, what a time to be alive!
This song has been in my head for 52 years. It never gets old.
DA BRIVIDI....ANNI STUPENDI, NESSUN GIOVANE DI OGGI POTRA' MAI CAPIRE, NE IMMAGINARE....
The music is simple, the poetic is high level, and the message transcends generations.
First time I listened to it: MAGICAL
Listening to it now: STILL MAGICAL
I was like 5 when I first heard this song and it’s been stuck in my head for almost 20 years lol
I literally just hiked out of death valley from a broken down Uhaul truck...unreal. My Dad had this album and besides praying I sang this song to keep focused on getting the BLEEP out of that hell hole...Go America!
Tell us the story
Videos, or it didn't happen.

I'm sorry bro... I lost my dad when I was just 30. It is hard. Very hard. Stay strong man.
I was in high school when this song came out in the 70's......still one of the classics of that time era.
I played this song all throughout my stay in Greece. I know it isn't exactly a desert but it sure as hell is hot
Ahh yes the song that sounds like driving through rural Arizona feels.
