I love this song, I love the solo, but I think that saying that anything is the best is over-reaching a little. I mean, Rod Argent's solo on Hold Your head High is pretty good, Jon lord of Deep Purple said it was his favorite. Steve Winwoods solos on The Low Spark of High-heeled boys is pretty good. Rick Wakeman's Roundabout Hammond organ solo is great. Greg Allman has some great solos on Live at Fillmore East. Even the Oberheim Four Voice synthesizer solo on Styx's Angry Young Man (Fooling Yourself) is pretty kick-ass. Or how about Keith Emerson's Karnevil 9 solos ? i could go on, but I won't. You get the picture.

Don't want to take away credit from Jim Morrison, he was a genius of his time, but the Doors just wouldn't be the Doors without Manzarek's masterful key playing. His playing makes this and the rest of their music instantly recognizable.
Edit: also keep in mind, Ray plays the keys section, but he ALSO plays the bass line in every doors song. The doors didn't have a bassist, it was all Ray.

That must have been a magical feeling! I met John Densmore in the mid 90s when he played a solo drum show at my college campus, University of South Dakota of all places! I wrote for the college newspaper at the time and was invited to the after-show mixer where only about 20 people were there. I walked right up to John, shook his hand and proceeded to tell him about a play I was writing in my creative writing class inspired by the Doors music. John smiled and then said, "If you make it to Broadway, call me up!" Still to this day I am amazed at my luck that day meeting him. Years later I was also able to see the Doors play in concert with Ian Astbury, which was phenomenal. The Doors played for about 2 1/2 hours and the band let people get up on the stage and dance. Very fun memorable experience.

I'm about a third of the way through Jimi's biography written by his brother, I recommend it highly. Music used to be sooo good, didn't it ? The great thing is, it's all still there to discover. I'm from L.A., and I was a teenager in the 1980's, but even at that time there, the Doors were held in high-esteem by the local rock stations - KLOS, KMET, KWEST, and they played them all the time. It was the first band that I acquired all of their records at swap-meets and such. They were true artists. be well my brother.
