I have watched this tutorial several times & I am very excited to try to make this quilt. It's one of the most Beautiful Quilts I have ever seen Thank you so much for all your tutorials but especially this one.
Appliqué is one of my favourite techniques. I have completed 6 that are wildlife themed (1 for each of my 3 kids, 1 for each of 2 brothers, and lastly 1 for myself). My nephew got a beautiful golden Labrador dog whose name is Daisy. I did an appliqué of her surrounded by white daisies he was thrilled. I found that a small blanket stitch gave me the best results because many of my pieces were very small. The whole process was exciting.😊 love your tutorials, Rob!
Wow the kryptonite quilt should be finished. Already made a superhero cape before with the help of Rob's superhero cape tutorial. Should have the quilt match it! Thank you Rob for being such an inspiration.
Just want to say, I just found you and thank you for the free pattern. I love it when teachers give out their ideas and patterns. That is why we love sewing. Keep those ideas coming.:)
Wow great idea! Love how you used the darker color fabric as shading. Can't wait to see the new video on the next quilt. Got another great tip from you thank you!!!
Great ideas!! Using the ombré fabric that way and making that stencil for what looks like crystals in your Kryptonite quilt!!! I think I might baste the flower petals down and then satin stitch from the outside in, to get my skills up before doing the center petals.
COFFEE!!! COFFEE!!! COFFEE!!! COFFEE!!! COFFEE!!! Oops, did I say COFFEE!!! Well, Rob, you are great for having as much coffee as you say. Your cadence remains good to follow. That is an extremely professional feat to achieve. Thanks for your manner and this demonstration.
This is so awesome! I'm still a little hesitant on the cutting part, even after watching you work with Jenny, but I'm tempted to try, because I love this Mandala quilt with the ombre fabric!! The blue and green "Cryptonite" one is very cool, and I'd definitely try that one!! Please, Rob? Do a tutorial for us!
Hi Cheryl! You can definitely do this! And I did create the blue and green one! Here is the link to that tutorial: ruclips.net/video/3Ocz5Eu2Xg4/видео.html.
Thanks for another helpful tutorial. Here is just something to consider, Rob: A pair of quilting gloves would make holding and feeding the fabric when doing the satin stitching and quilting much easier. The gloves also help relieve the strain on arthritic bones and joints.
Very nice work, and some good tips. Thank you. I am a relatively new quilter so I am learning a lot. You explain things very well, and I love to see guys sewing. This is a very pretty design!
OMG, this is EPIC!! What a genius way to showcase those ombre fabrics! I just dug through my stash and I have 1.5 yds of 2 different shades, so this has jumped to the top of my "to-do" list. Thanks so much for sharing this awesome idea!! :-)
you are on very awesome guy...totally inspiring some one to do what they feel is very impossible.... Rob I am totally in awe of what you... especially right now with me battling cancer... its the kind that travels from one place to another side of my brain and lungs to another... its been since February since I have been able to try and do anything .... Just please keep up the awesome work and maybe I will be able to try some of your work... your faithful friends in NW FL in the Panhandle
wow what great idea's. Please show us how you did the blue and green one too. I want to make both! Thank you for such great tutorials, I love them. I start every Monday morning with a cup of coffee and You! LOL
I love, love, love this Mandala! I also love the Moda Ombre fabric! I also noticed you had your hat on top of your little old man. Lol. I, myself have a fun little helper in my sewing room. His name is Bubba. :)
Ohhhhh Rob!!!....Please please... PaLeeeeeeeze make us a a tutorial for the Burst template Mandala applique. Have my burst template waiting!!!!! Love the Ombre flower and your color choices are fantabulous!!!!! Thanks sew much for sharing!!
Another great tutorial. If I was sewing those petals, I would have stopped where the 2 petals meet (21.39) cut the thread and started the next one from the centre, then when reaching the end of the last sewing, your new stitches would sew over and encase them - I would do that for each petal. Thinking about it, I think I would start sewing from the outer petals first and work my way inwards, encasing the end of each sewn line as I go. Hope you understand what I mean. We all have our own way of doing things and you did a good job anyway :)
Hi Rob thanks for demonstrating this I was wondering if there is another part to this and with the satin stitch around the applique were your feed dogs down I want to try this quilt
WOW! I loved this tutorial! This quilt is so beautiful and would be great on my bedroom wall! I would love to see the tutorial on the Burst quilt wall hanging! Please show us when you get the chance as I'm always looking for quilts that my sons and other men in the family would like. By chance Rob do you have a tutorial on the flag one of Red,White and Blue? Thanks for such Great tutorials!
I have the coming home quilt that you might be interested Deborah! You can view the tutorial for this fun quilt by clicking on this link below. ruclips.net/video/KAT9W6J1KAo/видео.html
I would love to do this in red with two green leaves on a cream background. I would make it like a poinsettia maybe with a little gold satin stitching and a few extra details to make it more poinsettia like. it would make a great table topper, place mats, or mug rug/coasters. If you rounded the backing fabric and added a slit back it could even be a tree skirt.
I haven't seen a turntable that can handle that big of a piece of fabric. I have my mat on a table where I can just move the mat around and this works well. As for the scraps, I'm thinking that there are a lot of shapes that are the same, and I bet there would be some designs that can be made by arranging those shapes.
Here's a tip I heard years ago. The logic is solid. To accomplish a wide satin stitch the first thing is to go around the areas with a thin satin stitch. Then go over the thin with a wide satin stitch. The thin stitch stabilizes the area so there is no puckering with the wide stitch. The thin stitch on the bottom makes the wide stitch on the top look like a solid color with less fabric speckles peeking thru. 🪡 🧵
Quick Question ! I live in Paducah, Kentucky and wondered if you or Jenny Doan will be at our yearly quilt event this year in 2018? I would be so proud to introduce you and Jenny to some of my friends here in Paducah and will lead them to your channel. Thank you
Hi Rob - absolutely beautiful quilt!! Not sure which template to use between the medium and small ones. You mention initially that you used the large and "medium" peel templates in the tutorial. The pdf refers also to the medium template. However, further on, when cutting the smaller petals, you speak of using the "small" template and the camera shot also indicates that the small peel template was used. Does it matter? Is the small template too small?? I think you a fabulous and watch all your tutorials! Sharon Williams
Love the concept but would like to attempt on pillow. The gradation on the Moda Ombre extends over such a large area of the yardage. Any comparable fabrics which would work on smaller scale to provide the same impact?
Hi Rob, I am new to you and to quilting. I purchased some fabric and the templets to complete this stunning piece. Did you say the pattern was posted below? I can't find it - help please.
Here's a link to it for you, Maria. Sorry about that! www.missouriquiltco.com/shop/detail/33483/therm-o-web/-/heat-n-bond-feather-lite-fusible-web-17-wide
First - I L-O-V-E all of your videos!!! I've watched most of them several times while I sew, you keep me company! I do have one question on the Heat & Bond on the supply list- I can see that it is in two rows and a smidge in the video...all it says is 17" wide, is there enough in one pack to do this project? I didn't find a length listed on the product description. Thanks!
What did u use for your backing material? There is no mention of backing other than u laid down some batting and put the 45" square of blue before the flower.
Hi Rob. Beautiful quilt and I did enjoy your tutorial! Thank you. However, I'm wondering why you would start on the left side of your work vs the right side when appliquéing? are you left handed? Just wondering. As a right handed, I find it easier to start right handed. And as you say, you're just learning how to do camera worthy satin stitch, this might help you. Secondly, when I was taught to appliqué, we were taught to start from the piece that you would normally put down first. IE one of the large petals and transition from there. Love the colours you used. That's a wow quilt!
That's just the side that feels most comfortable to me, Taylor. There are some guidelines we try to follow as quilters, but really it's best to find what works for you personally and go with that. ;)
I have both these templates and now have a new way to use them! Thank you!!! Is the pointy template the one used for Dresdens? Thank you for your fun projects! You are so fun to watch.
Hi Ellie! That's actually my new Burst Block Template that I recently came out with. It's a bit different than the Dresden Template. You can find it here: www.missouriquiltco.com/shop/detail/66371/msqc/rob-appell/man-sewing-burst-block-template-for-10-squares
I paid very close attention to this one. Love it! Question: Did you quilt over the flower? I like how you quilted the background fabric, but as hard as I tried, I couldn't see if you quilted the flower to the batting and backing? (Does that question make sense?)
Trude Jackson Yes I have made it with 4 fabric shades of pink. Definitely not as nice as ombre but passable if you haven't seen Rob's gorgeous one . I could not get that fabulous fabric.
I think that would look fantastic snwy471! It depends on what color you'd like to pair with the orange mandala? Do you have any ideas on what color you'd like to use?
Whaaaatttt? Can you read minds? While you were laying down your petal shapes, I thought hmmmmmm what if you did this with a more angular template? You know like a kite shape, or wait...........what about that burst shape you made???? AND BOOOOOM, Rob pulls out Kryptonite.
I have an older sewing machine, which allows me to set stitch *length* but NOT stitch *width*. How do I set the machine so a zigzag stitch becomes a satin stitch?
what is the color of the kryptonite ombre and how much do you need. if i'm going to order the magenta i may as well order the fabric for this one as well
That tutorial I use a green, but you can use whatever colors you like. You'll need about 1 1/2 yards. You can find all of the ombre fabric here: www.missouriquiltco.com/shop/browse/5095
It's nice to know that you have the talent, and know-how to explain every detail to beginners like myself,
This flower is so delicate. Love your fabric colour choices and the different tones. thank you
You gave a ton of good tips and spoke clearly about each step, I love your videos! Plus the editing was on point. Thanks for the tutorial!
Glad you liked it, thanks a bunch!

Love your enthusiasm and easy clear to follow instructions. Thanks
That looked so daunting that I almost did not click on the video. You made that exquisite quilt so easy.
This is so beautiful. You have definitely banished boring from quilting🤗
Thanks, Joanne! It's more fun that way! :)
Rob, you are amazing!
Super idea with the variation fabrics...👍😎love the effect😍
COFFEE!!! COFFEE!!! COFFEE!!! COFFEE!!! COFFEE!!! Oops, did I say COFFEE!!! Well, Rob, you are great for having as much coffee as you say. Your cadence remains good to follow. That is an extremely professional feat to achieve. Thanks for your manner and this demonstration.
Hey thanks BATFAERY!
Hi Rob. I have the pink ombray fabric! Still need to get the fusible web and background fabric. Will be fun to do when I get time!
Thanks, Rob this is a beautiful work of art.I love the color combination.
This is so awesome! I'm still a little hesitant on the cutting part, even after watching you work with Jenny, but I'm tempted to try, because I love this Mandala quilt with the ombre fabric!! Thanks for the great support Amy! I'll have to look into that!
oh definitely we need to see the blue and green finished.
Love the Kryptonite name
Reminds me of the ice crystals when Superman (Christopher Reeves) goes to where he through his crystal in the snow.
What a beautiful quilt!!! I look forward to trying this. Here's an idea- use both templates to make a garden of flowers?
That could be super cool! If you choose to try this, please share on instagram using the hashtag #mansewing so we can see it too.
That is the most Beautiful Quilt Ever! Thank you. Have to do this!
Thanks Joy! I hope you enjoy making this quilt!
I'm waiting for the Kryptonite Quilt tutorial please! LOL

Hi Rob thanks for demonstrating this I was wondering if there is another part to this and with the satin stitch around the applique were your feed dogs down I want to try this quilt
Great work. I'm hoping I can pull this off. I guess I'll have to find more templates. Any ideas where?

Thank you cornishbabe9! I sure will! :)
Awesome tutorial!! Thank you so much for your attention to detail😘
I would love to do this in red with two green leaves on a cream background. Valerie you have some great tips there. Thanks for sharing.
That would look awesome, Valerie! I hope you give it a go!
Hi Rob; I just wanted to say thanks for showing us your learning skills. I have'nt
I haven't seen a turntable that can handle that big of a piece of fabric. I have my mat on a table where I can just move the mat around and this works well. I'm so late to the party, but this is a FABULOUS quilt!

Love the kryptonite! In other colors it is a bit like a snowflake

I love this quilt thank you
This is Beautiful thank you for the tutorial
Would love to see the burst block ruler flower quilt.
It will be released as a tutorial soon. Stay tuned!
Hi Rob, I am new to you and to quilting. I purchased some fabric and the templets to complete this stunning piece. Did you say the pattern was posted below? I can't find it - help please.
You are a gem!!
Beautiful project Rob! And you're a great teacher. Will you please tell me brand and name of paper you used? I liked it.
Here's a link to it for you, Maria. Sorry about that! www.missouriquiltco.com/shop/detail/33483/therm-o-web/-/heat-n-bond-feather-lite-fusible-web-17-wide
Thank you very much Rob for your answer. IT WAS REALLY USEFUL. I like MSQC !
Thanks!
You will need approximately 3.25 yards of the heat n' bond. :)
What did u use for your backing material? There is no mention of backing other than u laid down some batting and put the 45" square of blue before the flower.
I would love a template of the kryptonite shape
Thank you! I put it in my Wish List! Looks like it would be very useful! I'm even thinking of swords on little boy Knight quilts!
Thank you! I put it in my Wish List! Looks like it would be very useful! I'm even thinking of swords on little boy Knight quilts!
Kryptonite! Too cool!
You're like the quilting equivalent of Bob Ross!
Please! Please! Please! Do the kryptonite quilt!!!!! I Love that one TOO
I paid very close attention to this one. Love it! Question: Did you quilt over the flower? I like how you quilted the background fabric, but as hard as I tried, I couldn't see if you quilted the flower to the batting and backing? (Does that question make sense?)
It sure does Susan, and I did! I did a light smaller outline of the petals.
Has anyone made this yet with nonombre fabric? Would love to see how that looked!
Trude Jackson Yes I have made it with 4 fabric shades of pink. Definitely not as nice as ombre but passable if you haven't seen Rob's gorgeous one . I could not get that fabulous fabric.
Fantastic rob I like it, can you tell us how make Mickey Mouse in 3d
Going to do it in orange material, what would be a nice background material?
I think that would look fantastic snwy471! It depends on what color you'd like to pair with the orange mandala? Do you have any ideas on what color you'd like to use?
Love this quilt!
so glad you like this quilt Martha! Hope you give it a try sometime!
No stabilizer under the satin stitch?? Amazing.
Sheila Craft I did the satin stitch with tearaway stabilizer. Much improved it
Ironing? Is there something under your fabric so you can iron where it is on the table?
How would you attach stabilizer? Use tear away instead of the fusible web?
Whaaaatttt? Can you read minds? While you were laying down your petal shapes, I thought hmmmmmm what if you did this with a more angular template? You know like a kite shape, or wait...........what about that burst shape you made???? AND BOOOOOM, Rob pulls out Kryptonite.
I LOVE IT!!!!!!!!!!
I have an older sewing machine, which allows me to set stitch *length* but NOT stitch *width*. How do I set the machine so a zigzag stitch becomes a satin stitch?
beautifully done!
I want to make that!
oh please please do a tutorial on kryptonite, i love it
There's one in the works, keep an eye out for it!
I have the large orange peel now I can make this with it, great tutorial
what is the color of the kryptonite ombre and how much do you need. if i'm going to order the magenta i may as well order the fabric for this one as well
That tutorial I use a green, but you can use whatever colors you like. You'll need about 1 1/2 yards. You can find all of the ombre fabric here: www.missouriquiltco.com/shop/browse/5095
That is awesome!
I love it .. thank you so much.
Beautiful..great share...thank you
